SANTANA Spiritualizes RockNRoll On 1970 'Abraxas' Album

Artist:

Carlos Santana, Gregg Rolie, Michael Shrieve Share Story

Dallas, TX - Nov 3, 2015. North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio with Redbeard: The Stories Behind Historys Greatest Rock Bands  celebrates one of the boldest, most successful, enduring and influential American albums, 1970s Abraxas by Santana.

The original Santana was one of the last bands to emerge from the late Sixties San Francisco music scene, introduced by a lights-out performance at the 1969 Woodstock Festival documented on film for the world to see. Until then no Artist had successfully infused the sounds of Blues, Salsa and Jazz into Rock, but Santanas second album Abraxas would embody all of it, spending six consecutive weeks atop the US album charts, selling millions and being lauded as Album of the Year by several publications.

Band leader Carlos Santanas distinctive guitar sound became instantly recognizable to fans and iconic in modern music to this day. His passion for music, his belief in its power and its magic, transcends both cultural differences and musical categories.  But for Carlos Santana, making music has never been about chart position or record sales. For Carlos, music is almost a spiritual quest, an expression of feelings too profound and intense for words. Playing music, says Carlos, is like having a ministry.

Carlos Santana elaborates on that thought with InTheStudio host Redbeard.

I think about planting certain sounds, certain cries, not whining, but certain cries, certain things in their hearts (concert goers). When you leave them... they say, Man you guys left me pregnant with the sound. Even when you unplugged the amplifiers and the trucks roll away, its still in me.    - Carlos Santana

The GuitarCast - BERNIE TORME

Artist:
Legendary Irish guitarist Bernie Torme called into The GuitCast podcast to talk about his new album 'Blackheart', the current state of the music industry and just what happened to that 'Desperado' project with Twisted Sister's Dee Snider.

Torme, who's early career included stints with Ian Gillan (Deep Purple), Ozzy Osbourne and Dee Snider (Twisted Sister), is assisted on 'Blackheart' by fellow musicians Chris Powell (Shark Island) on bass, Ian Harris on drums. Recorded in his home studio, the new album embraces the digital age of recording yet Torme cautions against paying too much attention to whats on the computer screen saying: "The prob is...in the past you could only hear things...visualization on screen has been incredibly problematic because people tend to lock in on problems that really have been on every record forever and no ones noticed."

Exploring new business models, Torme utilized pledgemusic.com campaigns to finance his last two albums. Torme states: "I thought initially it was a stop-gap but doesn't seem the business is in any way shape or form sorting itself out". While some established artists like Torme have found success using this method, he urges caution to those who might think it a cure all for the struggling music industry saying: "It's a new model that's been great for me. I would think it would be hard for a completely unknown".

Speaking on the excess of his 'Desperado' project with Twisted Sister front man Dee Snider, he recalls: "So, we recorded it, everyone is thinking 'great album'. A couple of tracks were played to the [at that time] CEO of Electra who said 'yeah, this is great"...a week later later he said "drop it". He continues: "That was at the height of the 80's, at that time every album had to cost an absolutely enormous amount of dollars or it wasn't a 'proper album'..."I think that album cost $400k or $450k." As to the work going into the album he states:  "I think at the end we had about 85 songs, it was insane." 'Desperado' was ultimately released after an 8 year delay.

Concluding his record label experience he sums up with: "I've said it before & ill say it again, those people deserved Napster!"

On his leaving Megadeth to rejoin TSO 54:30 “I don’t know if he (Dave Mustaine) was really happy with me at the end, and I wasn’t really happy with the situation. And by 2000, TSO had cut itself into two touring companies because people all over America wanted shows. And I’d been watching one of my children (TSO) basically grow up now, and I was kinda getting homesick. And Paul O’Neil said ‘listen, this is your world. Whenever you want to come home, you come home’. And I was like, you know what – I’m gonna come home now it’s time. And I finished the last show with Megadeth, and we filmed a DVD. I said ‘whatever the last show is, don’t worry I’m there..’ But after that, it’s time to go boys.”

STEVE MORSE Talks New Deep Purple, News Flying Colors DVD and more...

Artist:

Steve Morse, legendary guitarist for Deep Purple, Dixie Dregs, Steve Morse Band and now Flying Colors, took time out of his schedule to join Shawn and Corbs of The GuitCast podcast to talk about his Ernie Ball Music Man signature guitars, his signature Engl E656 amplifier, the new Flying Colors DVD and plans for a new Deep Purple album scheduled for 2016.

Assembling various parts from different guitars, Morse told the guys about his attempts at crating his own version of a signature model until Sterling Ball, owner of Ernie Ball/Music Man asked him to design a guitar for his company. After trial and error the Steve Morse signature guitar was born. "As an arranger and a writer myself, I said guitars can do so much more, lets try to give it as much breath as possible". The result was one of the most versatile guitars on the market and it's brother the Ernie Ball Music Man SM-Y2D.

Flying Colors, Morse's latest project alongside bassist Dave Larue (Dixie Dregs, Steve  Morse Band), Neal Morse (Spock's Beard) on keyboards/vocals, Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, The Winery Dogs) on drums and singer/songwriter Casey
McPherson handling vocals and rhythm guitar, will release their new DVD 'Second Flight: Live at the Z7' on Blu-ray, DVD, CD or LP formats. Available November 13 via Music Theories Recordings, it's the groups 2nd concert release celebrating
their two stellar studio albums. The idea behind Flying Colors, combining virtuoso musicians with a pop singer, has served the group well as 'Second Flight: Live at the Z7' demonstrates.

Morse states that writing has already begun for the new, as yet untitled, Deep Purple album. Currently in the writing stage, recording is scheduled to start about the middle of January. Capitalising on the commercial & critical success of 2013's "Now What?!" album, legendary producer Bob Ezrin (KISS, Pink Floyd, Alice Cooper) will once again sit in the producer's chair.

INXS Steal The Limelight On 1985's 'Listen Like Thieves'; Andrew Farriss, Kirk Pengilly Share Story Of Band Breakout

Artist:

Dallas, TX - Oct 8, 2015.  InTheStudio.Net, the web home for North American syndicated Rock radio show InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands celebrates the 30th anniversary of INXS breakout album Listen Like Thieves.

Australia might as well be Mars when it comes to locations for bands to breakout of. But in the early 80s it was the home for INXS a young Aussie band reinventing the sound of modern music while benefiting from the added exposure of the MTV video age.
Listen Like Thieves the band's fifth album would deliver a near Top 10 album and a string of fresh hit songs including the title track, 'This Time', 'Kiss the Dirt (Falling Down The Mountain)' and the Top 5 smash 'What You Need'.

Keyboard player, songwriter Andrew Farriss and sax man Kirk Pengilly share the tough and tender early days, surviving one-nighters and allying with a talented singer from Hong Kong-via-Hollywood the late Michael Hutchence.

Andrew Farriss reveals to InTheStudio host Redbeard how INXS was initially received in the US and shares insight on late singer Michael Hutchence. 'When we came to the US after we got signed we had this 'screaming' thing from little girls. 'Why are all these people screaming and throwing teddy bears when we've just been performing to adults (in Australia club circuit)?'  It was very weird.'

On Michael Hutchence: 'I recognized in Michael this bohemian thing immediately. He had an ability to be able to walk out of a room and not want to walk back into it again. Michael was always walking from one door to the other like a gypsy. '   - Andrew Farriss

Our second interview is with Matt Young of Australian metal band KING PARROT. He discusses the band's latest album, Dead Set, touring with Cattle Decapitation, would he mainstream the band's sound for greater commercial success and more.

Quote from the interview: "We're just doing what we love doing and that's the most important thing."

Geoff Tate, Chris DeGarmo Revisit Queensryche 'Empire' On 25th Anniversary

Artist:

Dallas, TX - Oct 1, 2015.  InTheStudio.Net, the web home for North American syndicated Rock radio show InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands , celebrates the 25th anniversary of Queensryhe Empire.

Coming on the heels of their breakthrough concept album Operation: Mindcrime, Queensryche delivered yet another curve ball with the release of their 1990 multi-million seller Empire.  Stretching the boundaries of Hard Rock Queensryche's timeless ballad 'Silent Lucidity' would catapult both band and song to the top of the charts, culminating with a Grammy performance in 1992 with famed orchestral arranger the late Michael Kamen.

Former co-founders Chris DeGarmo and Geoff Tate share their thoughts on the Empire era of Queensryche with InTheStudio host Redbeard.

'We just got into songs and not really the theme. We loved the theme, we were very proud of Mindcrime and loved what we did. But it was that shaking it up... wanting to go some place else. That's kinda where our heads were focusing on less is more. I remember us talking about less is more as we got into Empire, because I think Mindcrime was an excess of a lot of things, but the right amount probably for that given project. But when we entered the Empire writing stage. It was 'let's deconstruct this thing here'.  - Chris DeGarmo

Geoff Tate admits that not every Queensryche fan or music critic was prepared to let the band out of the heavy metal box.

'The box is their (the record labels) definition of you. They use it to advertise what it is you do and explain what it is you do. But as a musician, as an artist you tend to want to try to experiment with what you do. Therefore the definition of the box becomes different with each project at least for us.'   -  Geoff Tate

One on One with Mitch Lafon - RUDY SARZO

Artist:

Famed bassist RUDY SARZO joins Mitch on Episode 151 of One On One With Mitch Lafon. He discusses his new bands Devil City Angels & Gunzo, working with Ronnie James Dio, Ozzy Osbourne, Geoff Tate, the great lost gem (band and album) Manic Eden, Randy Rhoads, Animetal USA, Quiet Riot and why he's not currently in the band, and much more.

http://www.spreaker.com/user/talkingmetal/1on1-mitch-lafon-151-rudy-sarzo-ozzy-osb

Speaking of Frankie Banali & Quiet Riot: "I am a huge supporter of what he's doing. I'm so glad that he is carrying the legacy of the band. I'm so happy for Frankie and Quiet Riot's legacy."

Mental Health: "Throughout music history, you have some pivot points. Ours was MTV. With Cum On Feel The Noize we were on every half hour. That really really made the difference. It came out in March and by November we had hit #1 on the Billboard charts."

Geoff Tate's Queensrÿche: "Geoff really needs to have his vision realized (he's an incredible artist). He has this idea in his head - this is what the record is going to sound like. This is what the music is going to be like. I felt that I didn't have that much room myself for any creative participation (which is fine), but I felt that I had done as much as I can under the circumstances."

Quotes from the interview:
On the band's rate of releasing new albums: "When you think you think of 15 years and three records; certainly that is not a rapid pace by any standard."
On Anthrax not playing his era songs live: "I get it coming from Joey Belladonna's place. I mean, why would he? There are a couple of songs I wish they would play, but I understand why they don't. I don't think it makes me sad, but I do think that we made some really cool records."

The recent car crash: "I played Denver last week and I was definitely hurting on stage because this accident I had definitely screwed up my back."
"I was helping a friend of mine and was standing between two parked cars. Somebody crashed into one of the parked cars, right into me and I was crushed between them."

Double Stop Podcast - JOEL HOEKSTRA

Artist:

This week in the show - Joel Hoekstra is back on to talk about his new CD Dying to Live:

Joel Hoekstra (Whitesnake, Night Ranger) discusses his new project - Joel Hoekstra's 13. He discusses how the new album (Dying to Live) came to be, and the process of recording it. He also provides an update from the last time he was on the show (Episode 34), and discusses the recording the Whitesnake Purple album as well as the Purple tour.

https://soundcloud.com/thedoublestop/ep-74-joel-hoekstra-whitesnake-night-ranger-joel-hoekstras-13

On his audition for Whitesnake 1:38 "The first time I went out to meet with David, they had a pre-production of "Lady Double Dealer" for me to take a stab at playing a solo on. That was basically my audition. Pretty much what you hear on the album is what I wrote on my audition. And I also wrote the harmony solo that follows shortly thereafter."

On his new project Joel Hoekstra's 13 11:54 "It basically just sounds like a rock album. I had this weird dilemma because do I call it a solo album?  I can't really call it a band, because I did all of the writing on it - I wrote all of the words and melodies, and the whole nine yards. So I thought the most appropriate thing would be to give it a project name. So Joel Hoekstra's 13 is the project, and the album is Dying to Live".
