Press Release from Magnum's record label SPV for their forthcoming album Breath Of Life:
Breath Of Life is not only the eleventh studio album in the successful career of British art rock legend, Magnum, it also heralds the groups victorious comeback after a hiatus of over six years.
The album marks the resumption of the co-operation between the bands three masterminds, namely vocalist Bob Catley, guitarist Tony Clarkin, and keyboarder Mark Stanway.
Not to forget bassist Al Barrow, whose accentuated style suits the homogeneous interplay between the three experienced musicians perfectly.
The CD features twelve brand-new songs, compositions and lyrics courtesy of founder member Clarkin, plus six bonus tracks - Magnum classics, so to speak, recorded live or unplugged on an extra CD that will be part of the albums first edition.
Tony Clarkin produced the current album in summer 2001 at the Mad Hat Studios in Wolverhampton, where he developed that fresh sound for his band, whose characteristic recordings present themselves dressed up in a modern, contemporary outfit thanks to state-of-the-art studio technology. The tracks on Breath Of Life basically have the same feel to them as Magnum material from other eras, he explains. But you can feel the amazing potential of modern studio technology as soon as you listen to the twelve tracks.
It may be easier today to produce a good sound with a few flicks of the wrist, but at the end of the day the composition is still the basis of a perfect sound. If the structures wrong, even the most advanced studio technology can't really save the day.
Sound as well as studio technology work together flawlessly on Breath Of Life. Be it the atmospheric opener Cry, the driving This Heart, rock tracks like Holy Touch, or the atmospheric Still: the typical Magnum flair is unmistakable.
Magnum fans will have to wait and see whether they will get a chance to experience this kind of phenomenon in spring 2002, when Clarkin, Catley & Co., to the delight of their many faithful, are scheduled to tour Europe. One thing is guaranteed: at the very latest by the end of the tour, countless fans will yearn for a continuation of this talented groups activities.
Appearances at the Sweden Rock Festival and the Bang Your Head in Balingen, Germany, have already been confirmed. Roll on summer!
