There are probably fewer bands more qualified to be doing such a tribute to Led Zeppelin than Great White.
These guys lay the foundations of their sound on the blues rock legacy created by Jimmy Page and Jack Russell has always had a voice that resembles the great Robert Plant.
The album was recorded live at the Galaxy Theatre in Santa Ana California, as far back as December 1996. Not sure why the delay in releasing this, or why they thought now would be a good time. Resurrect interest in the band no doubt, just as the new studio album is released. So we have 14 Led Zeppelin classics given the Great White treatment.
There is almost no way that any Great White fan will dislike this, including me.
But there is a couple of finer points that I would like to make.
Firstly the choice of songs is always going to be hard as there are just so many Zeppelin tunes that were classic.
I would however like to have seen a few more uptempo numbers included because these guys are primarily a rock band after all, not a blues band.
The whole album is fairly laid back, more so being that it is live and there is only a few good old rockers like Living Loving Maid, Immigrant Song and the mystical D'Yer Maker. For that reason the album lacks a little bit of bite in the mid section.
But you can ignore that and select this album for a mellower mood and you will find it a perfectly crafted record.
My favourite tracks are the opening number, the awesomely done In The Light, the hard rocking Living Loving Maid, the softer blues number Since I've Been Loving You (great vocals!) and the old favourite Immigrant Song. Stairway To Heaven ends the album with a license for the guys to go completely overboard, but surprisingly this is very much a by the numbers version. Certainly nothing like the Far Corporation version!
Well recorded, well produced and brilliantly executed by the guys.
If you are looking for some mid paced blues rock with some top class vocals, this is the go.
