Harem Scarem's "other" mainman Pete Lesperance guitarist, co-writer and co-producer - has stepped outside the Harem name on many occasions, but never for his own benefit.
Finally now, his debut solo album has been created and released sadly only to a Japanese audience thus far.
Pete's solo style isn't a surprise, nor is the quality of the album. Neither Pete or Harry have ever disappointed, and this is no exception.
As expected, this is a hybrid of the more recent Harem Scarem production style and the modern pop sound of the two Rubber albums, plus the feel of Harry's own solo album.
Mix a little classic modern pop/melodic rock with the fabled nu-breed musical description and add a dozen high class songs and you get an album that is essential for fans of the style and of Harem Scarem in general.
Pete's singing was previewed on each of the two Rubber albums, but he really comes into his own here, his voice perfectly crafted to fit the tone and style of the moody, modern melodic pop/rock on offer. You won't find better examples of perfectly crafted pop as the opening track Scars and the essential title track Down In It.
The album is dominated by Pete's well known guitar sound, and the trademark Harem rhythm section of Barry Donaghy (b/vo) and Creighton Doane (ds/vo), but there are moments where the plot changes. Boy Without A Clue is a heavier, more aggressive rocker, Say You Will is perfect modern pop with a monster BBMak style hook, and Where U Want Me is as close to Harem as you could imagine.
The album closes with the obligatory instrumental, a trademark of Pete's.
The Bottom Line
Without a doubt, this is another classy, flawless addition to the Harem Scarem catalogue and yet another reason why the Lesperance/Hess duo is so highly acclaimed. They can just do no wrong.
The modern pop/rock style of this will dictate that not all Harem fans will enjoy the ride, but if you own and enjoy the Rubber albums, this is every bit as good, if not even better than those. Style aside, the production is perfect and there isn't one filler track amongst the lot.

This is one of the best modern rock albums I've heard. The first part of the album is just excellent. Pete's vocals are incredible and his playing is as sweet as any Harem's album. I love this CD. It's modern rock by experimented musicians. That's it.

First of i i would say that this is a much better album than HERRY HESSES solo album.
I love the choice in songs and realy dig the modern rock vibe.
Hess'es album is a really crap album, and it really stinked.
Harem scarem is offcourse still the best there is, but scars rule!!!

Very good album, the first 4 tracks especially. Some real strong songs here. It loses me a bit during the latter half of the album, very good overall. I like this better than Harry Hess' solo album.

Ok straight to the points, this is a great album, not award winner but great.
Harry Hess solo Album is 20 million times better, that's a fact,
you'll get tired of this CD after a while, believe me.

i don't understand what's wrong with singers this days?!

RICK SPRINGFIELD uses the word (HEALED) so many times!!

EMERALD RAIN uses the word (EVERYTHING, ANYTHING) so many times!

DARE uses the words (MyFriend , Mylove) so many times!!

i could go on forever got my points

1 - Rick Springfield (SDAA) 2004
2 - NewMan - Signs of modern times
5 - Dare - Beneath the shining water

those are for me the 2004 albums of the year , and the albums worth buying this year , so don't waste your money on anything else.

oh and end my review and all....

NEWMAN song WORLDS APART is the best song every created in this world, Harem Scarem - DISTANT MEMORY was my number 1 song ever, now after 14 years, this record has been broken....THANK YOU NEWMAN.

I have been playing this album non-stop since I got it. Pete's voice blew me away!!! As Andrew's review says there is not a filler on the album. I think the worst song which is still pretty good would have to be skeleton tree. The best songs being Scars, Where you want me and the best ballad for me is a toss up between No sign of life and Nameless, they are both great!!! overall I like this album better than Harems higher!! The only downfall of this album is that there is not enough rockers on it. I can just hope that Pete may even have greater songs for the next Harem Scarem album due later in the year!! Harry and Pete are gods!!! the most underated musicians in rock!!

i'll cut through the chase ....

this album is great, the songs quality and production is great...then why the bad score?

if people thought DARE new album was samey, well i want to let you know that this album is BORING....the songs are also samey in here ,but with the added bonus of being BORING after a while (not immediatly), i can't go past track 4, after that it's so monotonous...damn.....his voice is really catchy and i like it, but it makes me nervous, he doesn't change anything in the way of singing.....don't try to compare him to HARRY HESS , HESS is a monster....this guy is a nice guitarist with a nice voice that gets boring after a while.

Best Tracks *

NO SIGN OF LIFE (worth the price of the album alone) very best
SCARS (2nd best)
Say You Will (the only time he change his singing ways) great
Trouble With Pets (2nd Best instrumental since MANDY - HS)
