I just got done re-watching the 1985 movie "Secret Admirer" in which Mr. Stephenson had a couple songs featured. I did hear of his passing several years ago and, since I have lost a brother and several other relatives to cancer (a couple others are being treated for it currently), I wish to extend my sympathy to those who knew him and were close to him. I know what it's like to lose family and friends to cancer. I liked his work with Blackhawk, too. Sorry he didn't live longer, but am glad I got to enjoy his various works while he was here. RIP

23/12/08: Jackie - Jade1869@yahoo.com
Just watching Blackhawk on TV1 andwas thinking about the band and how it has changed from when I first started listening and just thought I would say that even still day Van is missed and will always be missed My God bless all of you and Merry Christmas

First posting of 08. Just wanted to say thanks for keeping his memories alive. He was a great musician. He will always be remembered in my heart!

18/10/07: Kal - kalster72@aol.com
What a cool tribute to a great musician. I was thrilled to hear "Modern Day Delilah" just this week on XM Radio. It is a timeless classic, just like Van's work with Blackhawk. Gone but not forgotten!

06/04/07: Bootleg - thomasmorelli@yahoo.com
I played in a country band and we covered (or tried) to cover so many great BlackHawk songs. Van was an inspiration and still is. God Bless him and family.

24/01/07: Jamie Bouchie - jamiebouchie@ns.sympatico.ca
He's still very missed today. Time is not healing this loss. He was so talented. I knew him from his days in Blackhawk. Loved his music. Ships of Heaven is possibly the greatest sad song I ever heard. I guess he saved the best for last. Blackhawk will never be the same without you, Van.

We miss you more than you'll ever know. Thanks for the great music.

13/11/06: Stephen Heath - stephenheath67@hotmail.co.uk
Just came across this page and noted Van's birthdate of the 5th of this month.Maybe Andrew could celebrate it with another tribute to the legend.

This has been a great year for AOR fans in the UK with the Journey tour and even Firefest but I have no doubt that the one guy people who visit this site would have sold their collection to have seen live was Van the man.

The fact people are still covering his songs on their albums such as fistfull of heat shows the guy really had a FISTFULL OF TALENT.

28/07/06: Marcio Tex - marciotex@arrowfm.com
wow this guy rocks!!
he will always be remembered as an awesome artist!!
GOD BLESS YOU Van!! Keep rockin!!

Van and I were in the same 8th grade class at Burton School, in 1966-67 Nashville, TN. He played lead guitar in a "combo" with Gary Hill; Bill Whit, Randy Seymour, and Joe Keith. We had some wild times in grade school and fun weekend dance parties back then. I always knew that someday Van would be very successful with his music. I miss him.

Just found this page. I've been a VS fan since Righteous Anger. I've never been able to track down China Girl. That is until today. After looking at this site I went searching ebay and found 2 copies on LP. I bought one, and there is one left. I'm sure it won't last, but good luck getting it somebody:

I did not realise until today that it was 5 years ago when we lost this great talent. This man was a genius, a truly great writer and musician. I bought Suspicious Heart & Righteous Anger when they were first released on LP and then bought them when released on CD about 10 years ago. Both feature amongst my all time favourites and get regularly played. Although a bootleg, I also love the CD Fear of Falling. His music will live on forever. A LEGEND is never forgotten.

10/04/06: Mark Anderson - manderson9999@excite.com
Although it is five years later now, I was just forwarded this website today. The fact that people are still posting a half a decade after Van passed away is a testament to how loved he was. Count me as a lifelong fan - I wore the Righteous Anger cassette out in high school, loaned it to friends (who promptly lost the liner notes), and finally succeeded in tracking down the CDs a few years ago. God bless the Stephenson family...

To the living soul of the late and great earthly body of Van Stephenson. More than just the solo albums and Blackhawk and the other reams of incredible melodic tunes with thought-provoking lyrics; a man of God - a disciple who taught and led others to the truth. With thanks to Van for the gifts of music shared while here, and with thanks to God for the gift of life that Van now shares with Him. To his memory and to his family.

10/03/06: John - johna57@bellsouth.net
I was very sad to learn that Van had passed away a few years back. But, when I found a website and learned that he was a Christian, that perked me right up. I know I'll hear and see Van again someday. His music is wonderful. Praise God for his Son.

Karen and family of Van, Remember his ol Epiphone 12 string he used when we traveled with Ron in the 70's? John and Jane and Vans voice and that twelve string were all you needed to sail into the throneroom of God. I know cause I went there several times. And when I came back down and went back to Nashville I got myself one of the last Epiphone 12 strings made in America. It was the spittin image of brother Vans guitar. Il never part with it till it's time to leave. an old friend, phil

I remember very well, when "Modern Day Delilah" began it's run on our local FM stations, here in Texas. I always ran to the radio, to turn that song up... Regrettably, I never could find the album "Righteous Anger" in any store here locally. Two years later...I was stationed in the Republic of Korea, as a soldier in the Second Infantry Division. I'm walking through the Streets of Seoul, and spot a music store...and lo and behold! What do I see? Van Stephenson's Righteous Anger album, on cassette! I immediately bought the album, (Because of the Modern Day Delilah song, which I'd remembered from High School)
and took it home... I was truly amazed...and why? SIMPLE! Most albums have one or two really good tunes on them...single material. All the rest of the tunes are what are referred to as simply "filler". However, on "Righteous"....it was ALL KILLER....and no filler. I liked every single song that was on "Righteous Anger". Somehow, that album became part of the soundtrack of my life...and something I won't ever forget. I'd like to thank Van, for his melodies...and his observations about life, put to rhyme...and for helping a "Red Blooded Fun Loving All American Boy" keep his sanity, while stationed far from his home. Van...with you up there, I know good and well, that the angels will be sounding better than ever...and that Heavenly Choirs...will now sing the Rock of Ages. Now if I can just locate a copy of "Righteous Anger" on CD.....

We were your neighbors in tn. We heard about van from a source who I figured knew nothing about the industry.By accident I stumble to a memorial site. I'm absolutely stunned. Remember? Julie and Jennie were together all the time! Julie, how do you spell trouble? When I asked, you'd say, J-U-L-I-E ! Jennie works for Nordstrom in Mich. Wayne & shelley live in Ga. May God bless you all. Van & I told some stories,he loved what he did,and he loved his family. He liked that blast in the Hot rod. God bless, and I'm so sorry I did'nt know. I hadn't listened to Blackhawk in a while so I popped in their greatest hits CD. Ships of Heaven is truly one of the best songs ever recorded. I remember "Modern Day Delilah" from back when I was in Junior High, and once I was turned on to country music in the mid 90's, Blackhawk instantly became my favorite band. I know he passed away over three years ago, but I realize that his music will live with me forever. He would have been 50 this year, so Van, happy 50th and keep sailing those ships in heaven. You are sorely missed.

31/03/04: Deb Rudd - funsinger@hotmail.com
I just wrote a comment before this and I said I recorded his song "we make love" and I meant to say, "others only dream"--My apologies.

31/03/04: Deb Rudd - funsinger@hotmail.com
I have 2 comments to make. Modern day delilah was a great song that brings back so many high school memories. In 1998, I took one of Van's songs off of righteous anger called "we make love" and I recorded it onto a demo in Nashville. I "countrified it" and it's beautiful. A singer from the 70's group "firefall" was my back up singer. When I re arranged this tune by Van, I didn't even know he was a member of Blackhawk. I just new of him from high school. I always had a dream for him to listen to his song I sang. Then I found out he was ill and passed away. It would be an honor for me to get a copy sent out to his family if anyone could tell me how.Deborah

VAN has left us something of unique with his songs.
Those sounds, those melodies and those texts were perfect to the
AOR music style in the first '80 years and still today i think they sounds good.
My favourite songs were particularly "Modern day delilha","I know who you are (and i saw what you did)","Heart over mind","We could be togheter tonight","fist full of heat" and "no secrets".
Van,thank you for all the wonderful music you gave to the world.
More people needs your music and you know why.......
You gave much to me,it' s hard to explain, but i can say that your songs will burn in my mind for all eternity.
Today you are not more with us,but i hope God may give you peace.

I am not a big fan of modern country music. So I don't watch CMT or listen to alot country radio stations. I did not find out about Van's passing until Christmas 2001. I was devastated. For Van and Blackhawk in my opinion were the best band to come around in years. Hands down. I had the opportunity to meet Van, Dave and Henry abou 7 years ago after the release of Strong Enough. They were playing here in Austin, Texas one Friday night when during the day they showed up at our local mall for a charity event. I myself ran to the mall record store to buy a cd to have them sign it. As I was running out of the store, all three of them were walking in and I almost knocked right in to them. I asked them for their autographs and Henry signed first. He then proceeded to walk into the record. But Dave and Van stayed there in the doorway talking to me for about 5 minutes just shooting the breeze. Asking me about myself and if I was going to the show. To be honest, up to that point I did not even know any titles to their songs. Now I have every cd and a memory of that meeting that will last forever. You were the greatest Van. God bless you.

This is a very sad new to the AOR world.
"Suspicious heart" is one of the greatest AOR albums i've ever heard. We will remind Van Stephenson by those great tracks he wrote like "WAke up you little fool" by Signal, "Stay" by Giant, or "Modern day Dalila", from himself. Those are my favourites songs from Van Stephenson. I hope the world would have known him better.

This is to all the wonderful people who have written such nice thoughts about my brother, Van Stephenson! I am his older sister. The Van Stephenson family just wants you all to know how touched we are at your kind words. Van loved Jesus and now he is with Him! Van, in his own words, said he was boring preacher and he gave his God given talents to music so he could try to glorify God in that way. I think he succeeded and from the nice words, I think that there are lots of people out there who also believe he succeeded. We would love to hear from you all again. All your kind messages are being added to a book my Mother is putting together on Van and his life memories.
Our prayer for all of you is this, "O God, bless them indeed, enlarge their territories. Keep Your hand upon them and keep them from evil, so that they may be free from pain and not cause pain!" God loves each one of you so very much. I'm glad he has put us together in this life. If the Van Stephenson family can pray specifically for you, please contact us via email and we ill lift up your needs and requests to God, our maker, Almight God. Thanks again, Sheila Lindsey

Just a quick word to say how saddened I was to hear the news that Van has died . His three solo albums to me represent the best sequence of albums ever. It is gratifying for me to see that so many other people from all over the world loved his music as well. I wish his family and friends well. His music is a great Legacy. Personally I wish he done more than 3 solo albums as I enjoyed his vocals so much.

Dear Family of Van,
I´m totally shocked about this message! I haven´t known about the existence of a band called Van Stephenson for a long time, since i got a sämpler called ´bavaria´s best´ that contained ´Modern Day Delilah´. By hearing this song tears began to come into my eyes. This song is so powerful and sad in one.
I didn´t knew Van personaly, but I think that he was a very kind and sensible person.
Best wishes for your life.

I am a big fan of Giant, especially their second album "Time To Burn". I must admit that I am not familiar with Van Stephenson's solo works, but he is the writer of my favorite tunes from Giant: "Stay" and "Lost In Paradise".
Today I visited melodicrock.com and was shocked that the headline of the day was that Van Stephenson had just passed away... I almost shed the tear in my eyes, but I couldn't, there is a lot of people here...
From now on, everytime I listen to "Lost In Paradise"... the only one I could think of is only you, Van Stephenson. The song is so full of emotion, and in fact, right now, it's on my mind, and I couldn't help but feeling so sad about Van... Oh, may you rest in peace Van...

"...but I've never been so high... I'm lost in paradise..."

11/04/01: Jack - zephyr102@hotmail.com

The news is shocking, and it's hard to know what to say...Van's family should take comfort in the fact that fans the world over share their sense of loss. Millions out there only wish their work could spread out through the world and be enjoyed by so many, like Van's has. Be it on his own albums, Giant, or Blackhawk, he was a class performer and songwriter all the way through - and that, at the very least, will stay with us.

I have a four hour drive to Acapulco ahead of me tomorrow morning. The most fitting tribute I can think of is to put Van's music into the car's disc changer, enjoying and singing along as I have done so many times before.

God bless, Van - wherever you may be.

Jack.
Mexico City.

Van. I was deeply saddened by the news of your illness. My thoughts are with yourself and your wife Karen. Van your album 'Suspicious Heart' is one of my all-time favourite albums, and I play it regularly. I have a list of artists/bands with their albums on which I take out with me when I go record hunting and about a year and a half ago I found a copy of 'SH' on cassette - I was really pleased and couldn't wait to play it.
After listening to it I had to get it on CD. But I thought I bet I never find it - WRONG. A mail-order AOR specialist I deal with sent me a catalogue and guess what your albums, 'Suspicious Heart' & 'Righteous Anger' were both in there. I immediatly placed an order. I was so excited. I've just got to track down 'China Girl' now.
You both take good care.

Graham.

Dear Van,

I heard about your illness through Andrew's site, Melodicrock.com. One of the things a site like this does is demonstrate how small the world really is. It brings artists and fans together like a family. There are people everywhere who's lives have been touched and inspired through your music, just as other artists and musicians will have touched yours. You mean so much to so many and I hope all these wishes will help you find the strength you need to get through this situation.
I wish you every strength for a speedy recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Dear Van,
For me your a big part of my 80's when Suspicious Heart was played at every party me and my friend had. I actually spend a lot of time looking for a follow up, but are sad to say I never found one. I've now got a band doing some AOR covers (and some orignial as well) and one of the first songs we picked up was "Together tonigh". But thats just one of the songs, that whole album is one of my absolute all time favorites. Ofcourse the Righteous anger album is also a great album...
I hope you get better soon, and maybe you'll be able to do another classic?

Best regards,

I remember the first time I put one of your records on the turntable, I believe it as All American Man which hooked
me. I remember the day I fell in love with Postmarked Birmingham, the day I bought the Blackhawk record to hear
it and low and behold Van Stephenson, wow who would have tought that as I got addicted to the new country that
that one of my favorites from my college days crosses my stereo again. And to think that you'd have to battle
cancer for me to find out there are three van records rather than just the two I so proudly own. Take care my
friend, we wish to see you back on your feet and making music very soon.

So sad to hear your unwell. Get well soon and make another record to rival 'Righteous Anger'- they simply don't come any better than that record - unless, of course, you're gonna prove me wrong!

Hi Van, just found out from reading here on melodicrock that you wrote with the guys from Giant and you have had 3 solo albums. i didn't know that, I'll have to go check out the solo cd's, I've got the giant cd's. I know you from Blackhawk, you guys gave country a nice kick in the pants. You guys were great in concert, and I love your guitar work on those albums. Get well soon, our thoughts and prayers are with you! D. Addison

Van,
I was very sad to hear of your illness. I have been a huge fan of your music ever since I heard Modern Day Delilah on the radio back in, was it 1984? We had a show on radio here in England back then that played the US Top 40 once every week. I now have the solo stuff and the Blackhawk CDs and play them regularly. Awesome stuff, man!
Get well soon!
Andy (Peterborough, United Kingdom)

Your album "Suspicious Heart" came into my life at a time when I needed hope, inspiration, and courage. It changed my life. Words cannot express the difference you have made to me. Please find the hope and courage to keep on fighting, because you mean so much to those you have touched.

I've been a fan of your music for years. I got all the BLackhawk cds as then came out and always had Modern Day Delilah on my mind as a song that I remembered from when I was younger but couldn't remember who sang it but knew I had to track it down. Imagine my surprise to find that it was from the same talented person I was listening to in Blackhawk. Thank you for great music and I wish you a speedy recovery. It'd be sad to not hear another new Van Stephenson song. I have been able to track down Righteous Anger and Suspicious Heart. Thanks again.

Speedy Recovery,

Luis Pereira, a fan.

Dear Van & Family

I was really sadden to see this story on melodicrock.com. My prayers go out to you and your family during these trying times. Put your faith in god he can do wonderous things. I have truly enjoyed listening to your music since i was able to find your albums. I discovered your music watching the film that had C. Thomas Howell in it. the name escapes me but the song is on Suspicious Heart and it has always been one of my favorite songs i have ever heard. I hope things get better for you i pray and if god sees fit to take you from this earth, thank you for the legacy of music you have left behind for all of the world and me to enjoy. May God Bless You and your family.

Dear Van,

Life has its mysterious ways...and to learn about your illness is like learning about a good friend's illness. You have given us all so much through your music,
and I bet you still have a lot of creative energy left in you!
I have the China Girl on tape, and of course the last two on CD. It was great to read your liner notes there! One of my dearest treasures is the 45" single of
"We're Doing Alright".... Your solo stuff has so much passion in it, and although they didn't sell a billion, I hope you understand that the music has meant a lot
to us fortunate enough to get to know it!
Keep fighting Van!

Geir R. /Norway

van - I had only listened to your righteuos anger album & was very impressed, then I got your other two albums & was blown away. Your music isn't as well known over here in the UK as it is in the US. But I hope you recover enough to be able to bring more of your talent to other musicians & to people like me your audience.
get well soon my friend

Dear Van,

I just read Andrew's post on melodicrock.com and was terrible sad to hear you are sick! I am a huge Giant fan and I just learned that you helped them write their songs in their first two albums. To be honest, I am not familiar with your solo work but since andrew doesn't speak so highly of every musician I am definitely going to check out your stuff. I hope you get well soon and join the music world again.

All the best to you from Istanbul, Turkey.
