I believe the usual line used is “stripping it back to the roots” or “delivering the raw energy of the early days”. I prefer the terms “low budget” and “crap production.”

The production quality aside – and it really is painful to listen to this album at volume – LA Guns definitely deliver the high energy levels.

This is a lively record of uptempo, attacking rock songs with a bad attitude and an aggressive feel. There’s touches of the debut and Cocked And Loaded, the punky part of Vicious Circle and some outside 70s blues rock influences (Led Zep anyone?)

Tracii shreds like a teenager and Phil sounds….well, like classic Phil, which is always a good thing.

The songs themselves are a mixed bag. The first three are pretty much classic LA Guns and Don’t Need To Win sounds like the earliest vibe of the band, Another Season In Hell stretching things into more adventurous territory.

The rest…I could take them or leave them. Nothing really stands out and as stated, the production is so rough and raw, its hard to appreciate any song that doesn’t deliver the highest quality.

So it’s another middle of the road score here for LA Guns. Their inconsistent catalogue remains just that. I’ll stick with the debut, Hollywood Vampires, Vicious Circle, Waking The Dead and Cocked & Loaded. Those are essential LA Guns records.

L.A. GUNS are truly one of the great American hard rock bands of the last 30 years. Since the self-titled debut in 1988 to the widely praised 2017 comeback album "The Missing Peace", L.A. GUNS, led by Tracii Guns and Phil Lewis have always delivered solid rock ‘n roll to their fans.

Hot on the heels of the success of the last record, the band is ready to attack again with the new album, "The Devil You Know”. Sonically, this album covers a lot of ground and incorporates influences from Black Sabbath to Led Zeppelin to Kyuss to The Hellacaopters, all while distinctly sounding like L.A. Guns. The band is rejuvenated and are literally taking no prisoners!

This current incarnation of the band has been touring non-stop and the cohesiveness of the unit, not to mention Phil’s stunning and unique vocals and Guns’ mind-bending guitar playing, are on full display here. A must hear and listen for all fans of the band, both new and old!

LA Guns Frontman PHIL LEWIS; "Trust Us!"

LA GUNS singer Phil Lewis says fans should trust him and guitarist Tracii Guns to employ “the best players available” as the number of musicians who’ve been in various iterations of the band approaches the half-century.
Guitarist Michael Grant was sacked from the Sunset Strip outfit this year and replaced by Johnny Monaco, who only lasted 12 shows. Some estimates had Monaco as member 49.
Adam Hamilton, a former bass player with LA Guns, has now returned as guitarist.
“I think it’s pretty much accepted now that if it’s me and Tracii playing together, then that’s LA Guns,” Lewis, 61, tells the latest episode of White Line Fever (https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/white-line-fever/id494213902?mt=2).
“That’s the nucleus and ‘trust us, we’ll get the best players available’.”
Lewis has never explained the reasons behind Grant’s sacking earlier this year but admits it’s preferable not to keep chopping and changing.
He says: “Of course - but there are situations, you know, that are beyond our control. If something comes up and somebody can’t stay and they’ve got to move on, you’ve got to replace them.
“So, you know, it has to be fluid.
“I think a lot of of people are curious why we didn’t get MIck (Cripps) and Kelly (Nickels) back in the reunion, the originally bass player and guitar player. The fact is that we asked them and they either didn’t want to or they couldn’t. Mick couldn’t because he’s got family, he’s got the whole business and everything.
“And Kelly didn’t want to so we just sort of forged ahead with the players that we had.”
Monaco, formerly of Enuff z’nuff, left because he didn’t feel the band was “a good fit”.
“There are somewhere near the 50 mark of people out there that can say at one time they were a member of LA Guns,” Lewis says. “That’s pretty funny if you ask me.
“That’s what happens when there are two versions of the same band touring at the same time. It happens. It’s just one of those things. It’s disastrous. It’s terrible for fans, terrible for the two bands involved in it but it was just the reality that we were dealt. It was just something we had to deal with professionally.
“And when you’ve got two touring bands going through various players frequently, as you do in touring situations, it doesn’t take long for the numbers to go up.
“To be fair, the people that I played with, there’s been about 10 people in my life, in my experience of LA Guns. There’s been around 10 different players, which isn’t very much, certainly not much when you think I’ve been doing it since ’87.
“There was a band when I wasn’t in the band for years. You know, I left. I left the music business. They had all kinds of members. The guy Ralph (Saenz), Steel Panther, he was the singer in LA Guns. He did a pretty good job. Jizzy Pearl of course. Chuck (Garrick), the bass player from Alice Cooper’s band, was in LA Guns for a time. Unfortunately I wasn’t in the band. I’d love to have been in a band with him.
“But ... this is LA Guns. You never know, he might be in it next week.”

L.A. GUNS was formed in 1982 by guitar player Tracii Guns and, then unknown singer, Axl Rose on lead vocals.

The "classic lineup" of Guns, former Girl singer Phil Lewis, drummer Steve Riley, guitar player Mick Cripps and bassist Kelly Nickels have sold 6.5 million records, including 1988's L.A. Guns and 1990's Cocked and Loaded, both of which were certified Gold. Cocked and Loaded contained the hit single "Ballad of Jayne" that went to #33 on Billboard's Hot 100 and #25 on the Mainstream Rock charts.

After a nearly 15-year break, Philip Lewis and Tracii Guns are back together for another chapter in their partnership that began in 1986, 4 years after Tracii formed L.A. GUNS in 1982.

Their writing partnership spawned classic L.A. GUNS songs such as “Sex Action”, “Never Enough”, “Electric Gypsy”, “The Ballad Of Jayne”, and countless more in an impressive catalog of fan favorites. The last time Lewis and Guns joined forces was back in 2000 with legendary producer Andy Johns for the making of what would become “Waking The Dead” – an album that went on to receive tremendous critical acclaim and proved that their musical partnership was every bit as strong as the early days with all-killer-no-filler songs including “Don’t Look At Me That Way”, “Hellraisers Ball”, and “The Ballad”.

Following their successful performance at SiriusXM's HairNation Festival in May of 2016, L.A. GUNS went into the studio to record their latest album, The Missing Peace, which is was just released in October of 2017.

The current lineup features founding member Tracii Guns, who has reunited with lead singer, Phil Lewis, along with Shane Fitzgibbon on drums, guitar player Michael Grant and bassist Johnny Martin.

LA Guns are vocalist Phil Lewis and guitarist Tracii Guns. Full stop. Both parties have trialled separate line-ups without the other, but output has never matched what these guys can do together.
I used to adore LA Guns. Vicious Circle, Cocked & Loaded, Waking The Dead, Hollywood Vampires…all genre classics!

But recent years have seen the band deliver some pretty suspect releases and you really don’t know quite what a new album might deliver these days.

With Missing Piece there are still some missing pieces. Phil sounds a fresh and vibrant as always, Tracii is shredding like a mofo, but the sound here leans towards a loose and trashy punk vibe, with a pretty ordinary production effort.
The album moves fast, the riffs come just as quickly and there’s attitude overload, but essentially, we’re talking about half an album of decent songs and half forgettable ones, plus a questionable production quality.

What I’m liking is the rapid fire All the Same to Me, Speed; the groovy Kill It Or Die (shit chorus though) and the ballads Crystal Eyes Christine and the more epic The Flood's the Fault of the Rain.

Cool attitude, great energy, but poor production and too many fillers where it doesn’t sound like too much time has been spent on the writing process. I’m still up in the air over buying a hard copy for my LA Guns collection. It’s already missing a few albums due to similar QC problems, so my OCD won’t kick in too badly.

Frontiers Music Srl is delighted to welcome the reunion of Tracii Guns And Phil Lewis as L.A. GUNS to the label for the release of a brand new album set for release in the summer of 2017.

After a nearly 15 year break, Philip Lewis and Tracii Guns are back together for another chapter in their partnership that began in 1986, four years after Tracii formed L.A. Guns in 1982.

Their writing partnership spawned classic L.A. GUNS songs such as 'Sex Action', 'Never Enough', 'Electric Gypsy', "The Ballad Of Jayne", and countless more in an impressive catalog of fan favorites. The last time Lewis and Guns joined forces was back in 2000 with legendary producer Andy Johns for the making of what would become 'Waking The Dead' - an album that went on to receive tremendous critical acclaim and proved that their musical partnership was every bit as strong as the early days with all-killer-no-filler songs including 'Don't Look At Me That Way', 'Hellraisers Ball', and 'The Ballad'.

"I think we owe it to our fans who have stuck with us during the many ups and downs of the band's long and checkered career," says Lewis. "Tracii and I have written the songs to the soundtrack of many people's lives, and I think it's definitely worth investigating to see if the magic is still there."

As for Guns, he's been compiling song ideas over the last year and promises this one will be one of the band's heaviest records, simply stating, "It's good to be home."

The band has already confirmed a bunch of UK shows in early 2017 and two shows at the legendary Whisky A Go-Go in Los Angeles, CA with more surprises to be announced soon!

The following five new Rock Candy titles are available now from www.rockcandyrecords.com for a discounted price including postage to anywhere ending on July 17.

GIRL 'SHEER GREED' CANDY307

CRASHING AWKWARDLY in to a scene that was almost exclusively primed for down and dirty hard rock, Girl were utterly out of step with the times. Hard rock bands during the very early 1980s complied with a strict in-vogue youth uniform of denim, leather and greasy long hair. The NWOBHM, as it was labelled, may have been a force for good but it certainly wasn't tolerant of aesthetic deviation' something that Girl found to be a major stumbling block.

Dressed to kill, they resembled a car-crash combination of Duran Duran, Japan and the New York Dolls. Musically, however, their riff-tastic style was more in tune with Aerosmith, Cheap Trick and Kiss. The band's somewhat androgynous look, penchant for eye makeup and cocky pouts, set them apart and there was no getting away from the fact that visually these guys were totally out of step with the scene. Sadly, therefore, they suffered some ridicule; despite the fact that they were actually trailblazing a style that was later successfully utilised by acts such as Hanoi Rocks, Motley Crue and Ratt.

Signed to Jet Records (owned and operated by the Mr Big of rock, Don Arden), this, the band's debut album, co-produced by Chris Tsangarides (Y&T, Thin Lizzy) and Nick Tauber (Def Leppard, UFO), made the critics swoon, but on the streets it was a different story, with the band failing to make inroads and wrestling with a label that didn't quite 'get it'. It remains, however, a masterpiece of musical juxtaposition boasting explosive tracks like 'My Number', 'Hollywood Tease' and an OTT cover of the Kiss Klassic 'Do You Love Me'.

SPECIAL DELUXE COLLECTOR'S EDITION, FULLY REMASTERED SOUND, 2 BONUS TRACKS, FEATURES PHIL COLLEN (DEF LEPPARD) AND PHILIP LEWIS (GIRL) 20 PAGE FULL COLOUR BOOKLET, 3,500 WORD ESSAY ABOUT THE MAKING OF THE ALBUM WITH NEW BAND INTERVIEWS, ENHANCED ARTWORK AND PREVIOUSLY UNSEEN PHOTOS.

MY NUMBER 12. HEARTBREAK AMERICA BONUS TRACKS: 13. YOU REALLY GOT ME  (B-Side) 14. LOVE IS A GAME (Single)

GIRL 'WASTED YOUTH' CANDY308

THEY COULDN'T have been more different; five musical rouges from London who had, almost by accident, joined a NWOBHM street party and found themselves sticking out like dandies in bare knuckle cage fight. That these guys were unique was the least of their worries. Fortunately, they made amends by tooling up with razor sharp riffs, knock out hooks and raw production. They were also fronted by a charismatic lead vocalist that taunted the crowd by blowing kisses to bikers.
'Wasted Youth' was the band's second album for Jet Records, originally issued in 1982, and one that was recorded in two phases, amidst getting bogged down in the sort of unnecessary label aggro that had already started to erode their faith. Learning from their previous visual faux pas, they decided to dial down the glam look and concentrate on beefing up their sound, with tough guy bravado and a dress code to match. It was a brave attempt to redress the balance but, despite the coordinated effort and finely honed material, the project was still not firing on all six with a label still unable to connect the dots.

'Wasted Youth', sadly, was lost in space, a fate accentuated by the departure of guitarist Phil Collen, accepting an offer to join Def Leppard for their epoch making 'Pyromania' album. Later, Phil Lewis went on to front highly successful rock outfit LA Guns. Both of them left behind a 24 Karat legacy, one that has been hailed by several high profile musicians as a huge influence on the glam rock explosion.

SPECIAL DELUXE COLLECTOR'S EDITION, 2CD SET, FULLY REMASTERED SOUND, 12 BONUS TRACKS, FETAURES PHIL COLLEN (DEF LEPPARD) AND PHILIP LEWIS (GIRL) 16 PAGE FULL COLOUR BOOKLET, 4,000 WORD ESSAY ABOUT THE MAKING OF THE ALBUM WITH NEW BAND INTERVIEWS, ENHANCED ARTWORK AND PREVIOUSLY UNSEEN PHOTOS.

TARGET 'S/T' CANDY309

ARGUABLY THE BRITISH rock scene was hugely influenced by the massive commercial impact of American melodic rock bands that emerged during the late 70s. However there was a time, earlier in the decade, when British rock cast a huge impact on American music. Acts such as Free, Bad Company, Trapeze and Deep Purple were the hot ticket items of the time and their influence was staggeringly persuasive' not least on Target.

Memphis based Target were keen students of the British sound and forged their style and identity with exacting accuracy. It was a style that showcased vocalist Jimi Jamison's (later to join Survivor) vocals perfectly, a wonderful combination of rough-hewn growls delivered with velvet smoothness, sitting proudly atop songs that packed a decidedly blues rock punch. The combination was hugely compelling.

Discovered by Black Oak Arkansas frontman Jim Dandy and his manager, in a Memphis Club, the five piece band were soon signed to A&M records and put in to the legendary Ardent Studios, with producer John Ryan, to cut this, their debut album. It is a work of sublime proficiency, digging deep into soulful grooves and muscular rock. Despite a concerted effort, including a thirty date US tour opening for Black Sabbath, the record failed to resonate commercially with the public at the time but did it provide a healthy platform from which to launch their follow up album.

SPECIAL DELUXE COLLECTOR'S EDITION, FULLY REMASTERED SOUND, 2 BONUS TRACKS, FEATURES JIMI JAMISON, 12 PAGE FULL COLOUR BOOKLET, 3,500 WORD ESSAY ABOUT THE MAKING OF THE ALBUM WITH NEW BAND INTERVIEWS, ENHANCED ARTWORK AND PREVIOUSLY UNSEEN PHOTOS.

TARGET 'CAPTURED' CANDY309

MEMPHIS DURING THE 70s was a hot bed of musical talent. Sure, its blues and r 'n' b roots had always been proudly on display, but with the explosion of FM radio, bigger live venues, and the establishment of a renown studio (Ardent), the city seemed to be providing its home grown musicians with an opportunity to set the world on fire. None of these possibilities were lost on Target, a cabal of tough rockers keen to stamp their identity on the local scene and beyond.

Riding a wave of creativity and seeking to maximise their already solid reputation as a band to watch, Target took the recording of this, their second album, with an impressive sense of purpose. Their debut album had been well received, but 'Captured', originally issued in 1977 on the A&M label, showcased a band looking to maximise not only their sound but also their image, profile and appeal.

Retaining their southern rock roots, the album was recorded by producer Paul Hornsby (the Allman Brothers Band, Marshall Tucker Band, Grinderswitch) at the famed Capricorn Studios in Macon, Georgia. Tougher than the debut, the album oozes a decidedly British blues rock influence, bringing to mind Humble Pie, Bad Company and Trapeze, with vocalist Jimi Jamison developing his unique, velvety rasp, which would later serve him well as the frontman of Survivor. Sadly, swamped by insurmountable business and managerial problems, Target eventually dissolved, leaving behind two fine but now little known albums.

SPECIAL DELUXE COLLECTOR'S EDITION, FULLY REMASTERED SOUND, 6 BONUS TRACKS, FEATURES JIMI JAMISON, 12 PAGE FULL COLOUR BOOKLET, 3,500 WORD ESSAY ABOUT THE MAKING OF THE ALBUM WITH NEW BAND INTERVIEWS, ENHANCED ARTWORK AND PREVIOUSLY UNSEEN PHOTOS.

BULLSEYE 'ON TARGET' CANDY313

BACK IN THE day, long before MTV or the internet, new artists and records just sort of escaped into the record stores with little explanation or indeed fanfare. For us in Europe the situation was even more mystical. We would keep an eye on the import racks looking for new stateside releases that showed some kind of musical promise. Boston, Kansas, Starcastle and Journey all came to our attention via this random method of discovery and Bullseye were no exception to this.

With roots in the Boston, Massachusetts scene but coming together in New York City, they quickly secured a record deal with the prestigious Columbia label, and set about recording their debut album, with producer Rob Stevens (who'd previously worked with prog rockers Crack The Sky), at the renowned Le Studio, Morin Heights, Quebec, and finished it in NYC at the Hit Factory. It was a match made in heaven, with the results displaying a musical maturity that defied the band's relatively fresh faced status.

Housed in a striking cover that suggested something special indeed, those of us that ventured deeper were delighted to find a well honed record, exploding with melodic hard rock firepower, and one that always kept songs at the forefront of the objective. Originally issued in 1979, tracks such as 'Moonwalk', 'Seventh Heaven' and 'I've Changed' lead the way but it's 'Treat Me Right' that will spark the most recognition as Pat Benatar went on to secure a hit single with it in 1980.

SPECIAL DELUXE COLLECTOR'S EDITION, FULLY REMASTERED SOUND, 3 BONUS TRACKS, 12 PAGE FULL COLOUR BOOKLET, 2,500 WORD ESSAY ABOUT THE MAKING OF THE ALBUM WITH NEW BAND INTERVIEWS AND ENHANCED ARTWORK.

TRACK LISTING: 1. TREAT ME RIGHT 2. SEVENTH HEAVEN 3. I'VE CHANGED (NEVER WANT TO SEE YOU AGAIN) 4. MOONWALK 5. IN THE HEAT OF THE SUMMER 6. MY OLD CAR 7. DON'T LET HIM KNOW 8. WHAT CAN I SAY 9. DON'T LOSE A DAY 10. MARCH ON, TIME BONUS TRACKS: 11. IT'S OVER 12. AGELESS 13. OLIVIA

LA Guns marks 30 Years with a Return to the Whisky A Go-Go

From Joe Dolan in LA:

The world famous Whisky A Go-Go played host to a night of local favorites with a headlining show by LA Guns, a band that got it's start on the very same stage 30 years ago. While the names have changed, as far as the performing line-up goes, the sound remains the same; and fans in attendance showed zero lack of support as the venue was filled to capacity by the time LA Guns took the stage.

Front man Phil Lewis was not a member of the 1983/84 line-up of the band when they first assembled the group and began their domination of the 80'sera Sunset Strip music scene. The band rotated members in and out at the time, blending parts with the group Hollywood Rose and eventually spawning two cornerstones in the MTV Headbanger's Ball generation '' LA Guns and Guns n' Roses. The result remains legendary in the influence of literally hundreds, if not thousands of bands that followed. By the time 1985 came around, however, the band had secured Lewis on vocals and his songwriting prowess and live performance history would meld with that of former band guitarist and founding member Tracii Guns to create a sound that would land the band a place in the rock and roll history books forever.

The current line-up of LA Guns includes singer Phil Lewis (Girl, Torme), guitarist Michael Grant (Endeverafter, Assassins), drummer Steve Riley (WASP, Steppenwolf) who has performed with the band as far back as 1987 and on bass guitar, Scotty Griffin (Hookers and Blow, The King Mixers.) The level of authority that each member provides from a history in recording and performing on the hard rock circuit played a key role in turning a night at the Whisky in to a show that concertgoers will talk about for some time to come.

When the curtain dropped and the lights came up, the band opened their set with four fan favorites. The opening song was Show No Mercy, a hard rocker that launched the band in to stardom as the first track of the self-titled debut by the band in 1988, eventually reaching gold status after the release of their follow up album titled Cocked & Loaded. Next came the 2nd track from the same album, Sex Action then two songs from the sophomore release ' Never Enough and I WWanna Be Your Man. Throughout the night, LA Guns ran the gamut of singles from their catalog, touching on the strongest songs fans have responded to throughout their history. From the back of the room to the stage, attendees raised their horns and sang along, one fan even getting personal with the band was able to remove a cuff style bracelet from her arm and put it on Lewis' wrist with gratitude, which he responded to with thanks from the stage, wearing it for the rest of the show.

The band is now on tour, independently, and has scheduled performances across the US that will showcase a series of talents that also come from the same era of the band's years in scoring radio airplay. Throughout August and September, LA Guns will share stages with artists including Ted Nugent, Cheap Trick, Winger, The (London) Quireboys, Enuff Z'Nuff, Great White, Sebastian Bach (Skid Row,) Warrant, Queensryche and Trixter. A good look at the summer of 2014 begs one to ask ' 'What the hell year is this, wherre hard rock is the biggest thing taking the concert scene by storm?' Fans, it seems, are just grateful for the return of music that feeds their hungry hard rock hearts.

Keep up with the band and the upcoming tour dates by visiting the official website at www.laguns.net, or on the social network through Facebook and Twitter. All links are available on the band's website.
