New TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA Interview Posted

Release Year:
2015

November is typically a busy time for Trans-Siberian Orchestra, but this year it's even more so. Not only is a new show centered around the made-for-TV-movie, The Ghosts of Christmas Eve, being premiered on their annual November-December winter tour, but they are releasing their first new album in six years, Letters From the Labyrinth.

Rather than being a rock opera as previous TSO releases have been, Letters From the Labyrinth is a collection of songs written around a series of letters sent between characters in their 2009 release Night Castle covering such topics as bullying, the banking crisis, the struggle in Ukraine, and the fall of the Berlin wall among others.

As the band convened on their rehearsal space near Omaha, Nebraska to prepare for their upcoming winter tour I spoke with creator, composer, producer and would be history professor, Paul O'Neill. I very briefly checked in for his reaction to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra/Savatage joint venture performance at Wacken Open Air this past summer, but primarily stayed focused on the new album for an in-depth discussion on its themes and dove head-first into the inspiration and details of the new songs.

On Lzzy Hale:
I also wanted to bring back something more from my youth. George Harrison's most famous song is "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," the guitar solo on that is Eric Clapton. Eric Clapton's most famous song is "Layla" and the guitar player is Duane Allman. There was just this intermingling of talent. So we decided somewhere on this album I wanted to try to bring in an outsider to have artists collaborating again. It happens in the rap world, but not as much in the rock world...So "Forget About the Blame" just kept pounding itself into me. But I needed somebody who had that passion and Lzzy Hale is a passionate singer. I've been a fan and so we made a phone call. She was so sweet. They were in the middle of a tour and there was a small window, but we got together and she even had a show the next day after we'd done the first day. I said, "I'm really sorry, Lzzy, but I need you back for another day." She came and she nailed the song. And I didn't know this before, but she was a TSO fan. She had her jeans signed by the band from 2007 when she saw the band in Hershey. She was a sweetheart and her band was so kind. Here they are with very little time off and here she is doing this. We are all fans of Halestorm and we didn't know they were aware of TSO and it was one of those things where the stars lined up. So in America we're going to radio with Lzzy Hale's version. Classic Rock magazine in Europe reached out and wanted to put the Robin version in the sampler CD on their cover.

On bullying:
I wrote "Not the Same" because the fact that Amanda Todd had moved three times and kids had watched her get beat up and nobody moved. It's amazing how bullying has gotten so out of control. All these songs have a purpose and as we've discussed before, Brad, the arts have an unbelievable power. I hate bullying. There is no need for it. The guy who bullied Amanda Todd had a mental illness, but the fact that fifty kids could stand around and watch as they see this girl who they know is hurting and see kids beat her into a pulp and leave her in a ditch. And no one stood up for her and no one went back for her blows my mind...The arts can drag attention to things that are so wrong. With "Not the Same" Kayla really brought that song to life. All it would have taken was one person to have gone up to Amanda Todd in that ditch, "Hey, come home with me. Let me clean you up. You want to know something Amanda, high school, junior high school's not the end of the world. Your life won't start until you're twenty-one. Your whole life is in front of you. Just hang in there." And that girl would have been okay. She just needed one person. There's millions of people in this world who would have loved to have been that one person. Evander Holyfield, the boxer, said that video hit him harder than anyone ever hit him in the ring. If that video doesn't bother you then there's something mentally wrong with you.

NO HOT ASHES Prep Debut Album For Frontiers; 33 Years After Forming

Frontiers Music Srl is delighted to announce the signing of NO HOT ASHES for the release of a brand new album in the Spring of 2016!

NO HOT ASHES are a melodic rock group who formed in early '80's Belfast. The rock scene of those days was a welcome alternative to the violence that was happening on the streets and 'The Ashes' became local favourites releasing one single independently. They signed to GWR Records in 1988, with a line-up featuring original members Dave Irvine on guitar and Paul Boyd on bass, joined by new singer Tommy Quinn on vocals, Tommy Dickson  on keyboards and Steve Strange on drums. Moving to London and supporting the likes of Mama's Boys and Magnum it seemed their star was rising but problems with getting their debut album released brought dissolution and one-by-one band members returned to Northern Ireland. By the end of 1990 'The Ashes' fire went out and they called it a day.

Burn through the years to September 2013 and NO HOT ASHES are given two reasons to reform. One was to play a tribute gig for Belfast's famous Rosetta Bar, the centre for Northern Ireland's rock and metal scene from the early 80's, which had recently closed. The other was to remember old rock friends no longer with them. The Rosie, as it was affectionately known, was a venue very dear to The Ashes hearts as their club night 'Cinders' was started by their old manager Stephen Magee, a mad PR genius who passed way before his time.  They enjoyed playing again so much' they couldn't stop and since the beginning of 2014 they've supported Aerosmith, Foreigner, FM and UFO. Playing Hard Rock Hell AOR, Download, London Calling, Ramblin' Man and Steelhouse festivals and most recently Rockingham!

They still sound and feel like a classic 80's rock band and after tracking new demos, the band sent the material to Frontiers who loved what they heard (strongly rooted in the classic tradition of British Melodic Rock ' la FM, Heartland, Def Leppard and Bon Jovi) and signed them for the release of a new record.

'There's less hair but more rock,' said Davey Irvine. 'And it's great to get back with the guys after all these years. I'm really enjoying writing the new material and I think we've all aged well musically.' And, as original singer Eamon Nancarrow points out: 'With NO HOT ASHES I have always felt that we had some unfinished business. What I want from this reunion, and the up and coming gigs is to prove we could have made it given the breaks. Oh yeah and to show my kids that their Dad rocks!'

With old crowd favorites such as 'I'm Back' and 'Summer Rain' in the set, the Ashes have also been writing new material, such as the epic ballad 'Boulders' and the all out rocker 'Glow' which will set fire to the new record.

For drummer Steve Strange, the only member to have carved a successful career in the music industry, it is the songs that make this adventure worthwhile: 'These tunes have stayed in my head since we split up and I've always felt they needed to be  heard by a wider audience. When the band clicked at first rehearsal it made sense to see how far we could take this.'

All members in the current line' up below have played a significant part in the band's history with Dave Irvine being the only member to have been in all manifestations. NO HOT ASHES are Dave Irvine on guitar, Nial Diver on guitar, Paul Boyd on Bass, Steve Strange on drums, Tommy Dickson on keyboards, along with the original singer Eamon Nancarrow. The Reunion EP featuring re-recorded tracks from their early days is available for free download from Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/no'hot'ashes'reunion.

Expect NO HOT ASHES' debut album to be finally in store in the Spring of 2016 - only 33 years after they formed.

STEVE VAI and MARTIN TURNER (former Wishbone Ash) guest on episode 167 of One On One With Mitch Lafon.

In the episode's first interview guitarist Steve Vai discusses the upcoming Tony MacAlpine benefit show, his time with David Lee Roth & Whitesnake, the upcoming 30th anniversary of the Eat 'Em And Smile album, bee keeping, working with Ozzy Osbourne, his guilty pleasure desire to join the Alice Cooper band and much more. Our second interview is with former Wishbone Ash member, Martin Turner, who talks about his new album Written In The Stars, classic Wishbone Ash albums, twin guitars and much more.

Quotes from the Steve Vai interview:

"I started getting full of myself and to David Coverdale's credit he tolerated it all."

On almost joining Ozzy Osbourne's band: "I love Ozzy, but can you picture me touring with him? I can't see myself playing Paranoid every night."

"When it came to the Ozzy thing, saying that it would be step backwards is too strong, but I'd done it. I'd been with the big rock stars doing that kind of thing. My instincts said, 'no no no'."

On wanting to play with Alice Cooper: "I would have to say yeah... I could do this for a while (like a tour). How cool would that be?"

'Hair I Go Again' Date Documentary Film Set To Premiere March 10, 2016

Documentary Film Set To Premiere Worldwide On March 10, 2016

Hair I Go Again, a documentary about the determination and failures of a former hair band chasing their dreams, will officially be released worldwide on March 10th, 2016.  In anticipation of the event, the producers have unveiled its newest trailer and key art.

The year was 1985. Thousands of miles away from the sonic debauchery of the Sunset Strip, two teenage friends shared aspirations of glam rock grandeur. Freshly permed and taking a page straight out of Hit Parader, a hungry, determined band was born. Fame and fortune, however, remained out of reach and the group unceremoniously imploded...probably over some chick.

Fast forward thirty years.

Facing a mid-life crossroads, Kyle Kruger and Steve McClure set out on an improbable journey in order to fulfill their dreams of achieving rock & roll stardom.  With credit cards maxed out and the 401K cashed in, the pair risk everything in hopes of reclaiming the magic they had as a band over a quarter century ago.

It's a story about a lifelong friendship, insurmountable odds and dealing with the always present thought of 'what if'?  It's a tale of rediscovery, determination, triumphs and failures.

Because first and last chances happen only once.

Featuring candid interviews with some of the most influential musicians and industry professionals in the business, including Eddie Trunk (That Metal Show), Jeff Keith and Frank Hannon (Tesla), Ron Keel (KEEL), Steve Blaze (Lillian Axe), Frank Bello and Joey Belladonna (Anthrax), Les Warner (The Cult), as well as members of Kix, Stryper, Queensryche, Quiet Riot, Warrant, Motorhead, LA Guns and more.

LAST IN LINE Debut 'Heavy Crown' out February 19

News from LAST IN LINE.
The debut album will be titled Heavy Crown and released on February 19, 2016 via Frontiers Music Srl. The CD was recorded at a Southern California studio with producer Jeff Pilson.

A message from Vivian Campbell of Last In Line:
"In preparation for the release of the debut Last In Line album, we recently shot a couple of music videos, did an epic photo shoot with Ross Halfin Photography, and prepared the album artwork and packaging. We’re very excited about what’s to come in early 2016 with the new record and thought we would take this opportunity to bring everyone up to speed with some changes that have happened within the band.
When we started this project a few years ago, the initial idea was to reunite the original Dio band to play the songs we wrote and recorded withRonnie James Dio in the early 1980’s. Joined by Andrew Freeman on vocals and original Dio keyboard player, Claude Schnell, we played a handful of shows from southern California to the U.K to Japan. It was a limited ambition, but one that brought us great joy in reconnecting to this great music, to each other, and to our collective history.
Our ambition at that time didn’t extend to writing and recording any new music, but when we were offered the opportunity to do so by the Frontiers record label, we took that step forward. At that time, it was decided that we enter the studio to write this new album in the very same spirit as we did the Holy Diver record: In autumn of 1982 Ronnie, Vinny, Jimmy and I went into Sound City studios to kick around ideas and riffs, and about six weeks later we started laying down the tracks for what was to become the Holy Diver album.
It was after Holy Diver was written and recorded that we brought in Claude to embellish certain songs in a way that the guitar just couldn’t do. From that time forward Claude became an essential part of the band's live shows.
In retracing our footsteps, we again started to write this new album as a four-piece band – thus keeping the emphasis on guitar-driven songs. In the course of doing so we have decided to continue on that path and remain a four-piece band.
We wish Claude every success and he remains a very close friend and confidant to all concerned."

Supremacy Change Name to PHANTOM 5

Frontiers Music Srl announces that the German band formerly known as Supremacy has decided to change its name to PHANTOM 5 in order to avoid any confusion with other bands using the former moniker.

Producer and guitarist Michael Voss says: "There is so much traffic around when it comes to the names for another band. We first had the Supremacy name and really rigged it, but fans worldwide contacted us that there were other bands who already used the brand. So we developed a new one and finally got lucky to find: Phantom 5!"

PHANTOM 5 is the new band formed by some german Hard Rock luminaries, including former Bonfire singer Claus Lessmann, former Frontline guitarist Robby Boebel, former Scorpions bassist Francis Buchholz and former Jaded Heart drummer Axel Kruse - along with Michael Voss (Casanova).

Voss is currently putting the finishing touches to the mixes and says: For me it sounds like we did a follow up to the famous Bonfire Fireworks album with a touch of Frontline meets Jaded Heart groove it is a driving monster with huge walls of guitars, powerful soaking drums and fine catchy melodieswe took a trip back into the world of the eighties!!!

The label plans to release the record in the first half of 2016.
