Well it’s a lot better than the one-paced and rather bland debut, that’s for certain. Tighter production, clearer mix and much better songs. And the band has moved away from the Whitesnake heritage, swinging into a more straight up classic rock vibe. Maybe because Neil Murray is the only snake left after Mickey Moody departed.

Chris Ousey as usual sings his heart out, belting out his best on tunes such as the rocking opening Sounds Like A Plan and the sweeter feel good That Kind Of Love and the fast moving Follow Me Under, which continues a more varied tempo than the debut.

The blues kick in with some hard edged riffing on Hell Of A Way To Live, continuing into the slow burning ballad Fade Away.
The acoustic driven pop/rock ballad Punching Above My Weight is a tail end highlight amongst a few songs that don’t carry their weight.

I’d still much prefer Chris Ousey fronting The Distance, or teaming again with Mike Slamer like he did for his debut solo album. Still, it’s always good to hear his voice.

Snakecharmer have lost a little of their ‘snake’ and gained a little more ‘charm’, but they are still a ways off a classic album. More work on hooks and choruses next time – everything else seems to be in place.

EVERY MOTHER’S NIGHTMARE 'Grind' Out Some New Tunes

Categories:
News Feed

Formed in the early 90’s, EVERY MOTHER’S NIGHTMARE is no stranger to the music scene. After quickly arriving on the Memphis rock scene, word spread about their energy-packed live performances gaining them the attention of Clive Davis (Arista Records). After signing with Arista, EVERY MOTHER’S NIGHTMARE became staples on MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball with their music videos for “Walls Come Down”, “Love Can Make You Blind”, and “House of Pain”.

Grind features a total of 11 tracks and three videos. The enhanced CD contains the five tracks from the self-released EP, plus three brand new studio tracks, three new live tracks recorded from the band’s performance at Minglewood Hall in Memphis, TN on August 21st, 2016 and the new video for “Push” along with the videos “Blown Away” and “Loco Crazy”.

Ready for real pure rock again? This is rock that hasn’t been infiltrated with other genres’ characteristics but has remained a sanctuary of sorts. Rock that brings back the feeling that we should probably just drink another beer, kick back and stay awhile. Rock that is progressive and whole with a sultry edge all its own.

Studio tracks on Grind were produced by Justin Rimer at Cross Trax Studios. Live tracks were produced by David Cowell at Cleaved Owl Productions with mastering by Brad Blackwood at Euphonic Masters. The project also features appearances by Jim Dandy (The Jim Dandy) guest vocals on “Stand Up”, Wayne Swinny (Saliva) guitar on “Snake”, and Zach Myers (Shinedown) guitar on “Crazy”.

RockPages Talks To JANET GARDNER

Highlights:

Rockpages.gr: Janet, I guess the first question is quite obvious…why did you decide to record your first solo album now, aftter all these years?
Janet Gardner: It just happened really…together with Justin we sset up our home studio and we started playing around, exchanging ideas…wee wrote a few songs and then we saw that we were really coming up with something special. The album was completed before we knew it. In the past I have worked with other people but this time, with Justin, it's really important to me. Actually, it's the best thing that I've done in ages. So, in answer to your question, I just knew that it was the right time to do it.

Rockpages.gr: Janet, did it feel any different working on your own compared to your previous recording experience with Vixen?
Janet Gardner: Well, it's quite a bit different obviously due to my personal relationship with Justin but also due to the fact that we are only two people that made the decisions. We were only two people that we had to agree upon certain things. So that was the main difference compared to the other records that I did with Vixen. Also, we were able to move things quickly that's why the record was completed so fast. On the one hand, it's great that we finished the album so quickly but also I must say that it's also great when there are other people on the band adding something to the album. This time was faster and it felt great to create something with your life partner.

Rockpages.gr: I wrote in my review that the album is diverse and it sounds like a bridge that connects the 80s with the 90s. What's your point of view on the musical style of the album?
Janet Gardner: I think it's pretty accurate because our roots go back to the 70s up to the 80s and the 90s. I must tell you that we both loved some of the 90s bands. In the 80s everything was about fun and all we wanted to do is have a great time. But I must tell you that as an artist I love the depth that came in the 90s with the lyrics and the overall darker mood of the albums. I guess you can say that we love both eras…the best of both worlds. We definitely combine those two elemments that's why there is some diversity on the album.

Rockpages.gr: The album is modern sounding. Did you have any worries regarding the reaction of the old school Vixen fans?
Janet Gardner: Well, it's not a Vixen album…it'ss me and Justin. So I hope that they won't think that it's that different. Naturally, it doesn't sound like Vixen. But I must say that there is a lot of stuff on that album that I truly believe that the Vixen fans will appreciate. I still have some of the 80s anthemic choruses in there so I guess they should all give it a chance and listen to it. I am sure they will find things they will love.

FICTION SYXX - Tall Dark Secrets - IN STOCK NOW!

MelodicRock Records is excited to announce signing new hard rock project FICTION SYXX. The debut album ‘Tall Dark Secrets’ is in stock now. All pre-orders shipping out.

FICTION SYXX, is the brain child of songwriter/vocalist/guitarist, Mark Allen Lanoue.  But like all ideas, including musical ones, it is not just about the writing; it is about the delivery. So, after writing the first song called “Welcome to my Nightmare” for this new musical journey, Mark started talking with friend and multi-talented musician/songwriter/producer, JK Northrup (KING KOBRA, XYZ) about starting a project that would be framed around a core of members.

PRE-ORDER NOW! All pre-orders will ship early.

FICTION SYXX - 'Tall Dark Secrets' ($15 + $5 shipping worldwide)

MRR August Deal:

FICTION SYXX & JAN AKESSON'S SHADOW RAIN (Both Releases for $30 and just $4 shipping worldwide)

Mark then talked to an old bandmate, drummer, Rory Faciane.  Rory is a live and studio drummer that attended the Musicians Institute and now resided in Nashville TN.  Rory immediately came on board with Mark and JK as the drummer.  Then Mark began talking to Tony “The Fretless Monster” Franklin (THE FIRM, BLUE MURDER).  After Tony heard the first ideas for this project, he offered to play bass and added his amazing talents to the project.  Finally, keyboardist extraordinaire, Eric Ragno (GRAHAM BONNET, JOE LYNN TURNER) was added to the lineup.

Now the band was complete and ready to deliver the album “TALL DARK SECRETS”!

FICTION SYXX mixes progressive hard rock with a nuance of melodic rock. The first release from this project was a way to bring a talented core of seasoned musicians together and to bring several guest artists and what came out of the effort is a solid 11 songs of progressive rock.

The name FICTION SYXX was created nearly 10 years ago. It is derived from the many mystical and mythical meanings behind the number 6 and sequences of that number such as “666” and “6666”.  Since Mark was born on 6-6-66, the mystique about the number six became intriguing to him.  In the 80’s, it also gained quite the bit of attention when being ID’d at convenience stores and bars.

FICTION SYXX is:
Mark Allen Lanoue - Lead and Backing Vocal, Rhythm- Lead and Acoustic Guitar
JK Northrup -  Rhythm- Lead- Slide and Acoustic Guitar, Backing Vocal
Tony Franklin - Bass
Rory Faciane - Drums and Percussion
Eric Ragno - Keyboards

The album was Produced, Mixed and Mastered by JK Northrup at Alien Productions Music Studio, Carmichael CA, USA
