Dallas, TX - November 17, 2015.  North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands speaks to Queen songwriters, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, about the make or break fourth album from Queen A Night at the Opera.

It would be next to impossible to understate the importance of Queen's November 1975 A Night at the Opera, both to the band's career and to the album's influence on rock thereafter. Brian May, one of the finest guitarists in rock history, is joined InTheStudio by Queen drummer Roger Taylor in this classic rock interview for the 40th anniversary of this eclectic hard rock album which included: 'Death on Two Legs', 'I'm in Love with My Car', the progressive rock 'The Prophet Song', skiffle pub sing along ' '39' , mainstream pop 'You're My Best Friend', campy vaudeville 'Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon', Freddie Mercury'sdrop dead gorgeous love song 'Love of My Life' , and the mock operetta song for the ages 'Bohemian Rhapsody'.

Broke after three albums, Queen's Brian May reveals to InTheStudio host Redbeard how desperate the band's situation was, but also how determined they were to do it.

'It was definitely sink or swim. If that album (A Night at the Opera) hadn't done what it did, that would have been the end of the band... We took a lot of risks and that was always the name of the game, I suppose. And 'Bohemian Rhapsody', in particular, everyone said, 'you can't put that out as a single'... Well that's what we're putting out and we're not changing it.'  - Brian May

Queen honored At The Q Awards
With Bohemian Rhapsody collecting the Classic Single Award

New York, NY (October 20, 2015)-- ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ was the song that changed everything, a song that resonates through time, a special moment in music history that has yet to be repeated.  At The Q Awards yesterday, Queen were presented with the Classic Single Award, marking the 40th anniversary of song which was originally released on October 31, 1975.

To mark the occasion for the first time ever, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ will be released on 12 inch Black vinyl with the original B-side ‘I’m In Love With My Car’ on November 27, 2015. Alongside this, Queen, A Night At The Odeon, Live At Hammersmith ’75, is set for release on CD (Hollywood Records), DVD & Blu-Ray (Eagle Rock Entertainment).  This show was a culmination of the 26-date ‘Queen Invite You To A Night At The Opera’ UK tour and the first tour that they had ever performed Bohemian Rhapsody on.

The CD, DVD & Blu-Ray package features the band’s full live show, complete with a never heard before ‘second encore’ of ‘Seven Seas Of Rhye’ and ‘See What A Fool I've Been’.  The DVD and SD Blu-Ray versions also contain two special bonus features – 'Looking Back At The Odeon’, a brand new 22-minute documentary featuring a previously unseen interview with Brian May and Roger Taylor by Old Grey Whistle Test presenter Bob Harris about the 1975 Hammersmith Odeon show, plus the rarely seen Live At The Budokan – Japan 1975 footage, featuring three songs (Now I'm Here, Killer Queen and In The Lap Of The Gods… Revisited) recorded during their legendary tour of the Far East.

Spirits were high within the band for this show; ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ - universally hailed as one of the most ground-breaking ‘pop’ songs ever released – was in the middle of its record-breaking nine week run at Number One in the UK charts. Their fourth album, A Night At The Opera (the most expensive record ever made to that point) was climbing the album charts on its way to No 1, which it achieved three days after this concert.

With over 6.5 million copies sold worldwide, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ is one of the world’s most well known and well loved songs. To this day, it continues to top ‘favorite song’ opinion polls and be discovered by new generations of music fans over and over again.  Freddie wrote the whole song – including the composite harmonies – on telephone books and scraps of paper.

Brian May recalled recording ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’; “That was a great moment, but the biggest thrill for us was actually creating the music in the first place. I remember Freddie coming in with loads of bits of paper from his dad's work, like Post-it notes, and pounding on the piano. He played the piano like most people play the drums. And this song he had was full of gaps where he explained that something operatic would happen here and so on. He'd worked out the harmonies in his head."

Queen spent days overdubbing the vocals in the studio using a 24 track tape machine. By the time they were done, about 120 vocal tracks were layered together.  The opera parts alone took longer than 70 hours to complete.  At the time, it was the most expensive single ever made and upon presenting it to their record label, they were told by various executives that 5 minutes 55 seconds was too long and the song would never be a hit.  But after the song was played by DJ and friend of Freddie, Kenny Everett, 14 times in two days before its official release, the song was only ever destined to be a hit.  Hordes of fans attempted to buy the single only to be told by record stores that it had not yet been released.  Over in the US, it was the same. American radio RKO managed to get a copy of the tape and started to play it in across their network, which forced the hand of Queen's US label to release the song in its entirety.

‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ was Queen's first ever number 1 single and the 1975 UK Christmas number one, holding the top position for nine weeks. It is the first song ever to get to number one in the UK twice with the same version, and is also the only single to have been Christmas number one twice with the same version. The second was upon its re-release (as a double A-side single with ‘These Are the Days of Our Lives’) in 1991 following Mercury's death, staying at number one for five weeks,  eventually becoming the UK's third best-selling single of all time.

The single has sold in excess of 6.5 million copies worldwide and has been covered by everyone from Kayne West during his 2015 controversial Glastonbury headline slot, Axl Rose, Elton John and Pink to The Flaming Lips and Elaine Paige and forever immortalized again by Mike Myers and Dana Carvey in the smash hit 90’s film, Wayne’s World.

Queen 'The Game': Brian May, Roger Taylor Recall 1980 Worldwide #1

Dallas, TX - June 30, 2015.  North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands gets a royal visit from Queen songwriters, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, on the 35th anniversary of their biggest selling album The Game.

'There was a time there, about three seconds, when we were the biggest band in the world', chuckles Queen's Brian May.  Queen had succeeded as four real 'mates' on an international scale, producing four Top 10 albums in five years which would continue only to sell increasingly for the next three decades. With four writers, the band had a surplus of strong songs on The Game, including 'Play the Game', 'Dragon Attack', the Glam rock-reminiscent 'Coming Soon''Need Your Loving Tonight', the touching 'Sail Away Sweet Sister', the prescient 'Save Me', and two # 1 hits, the rockabilly-inspired 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love' and the rhythmic smash 'Another One Bites the Dust'.

Roger Taylor and Brian May give us the royal treatment, revealing  much of how Queen worked in the studio for The Game. Brian, speaking to InTheStudio host Redbeard, sums up perhaps the most important and overlooked element of the entire recording process.

'I think as a band we are very aware of sound. You can make great, wonderful records, build in all sorts of arrangements and everything, but if it doesn't sound nice, then nobody wants to listen to it. It's something that isn't talked about much these days. Sound quality is vital.  - Brian May

Queen's Brian May, Roger Taylor Channel Freddie Mercury Forever

Dallas, TX - November 12, 2014.  North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands rules the airwaves with rock royalty, Queen songwriters, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, on the release of a new impressive compilation that explains why fans will love Queen forever.

Queen celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2011 with a hit musical We Will Rock You, a highly successful international tour pairing Queen with Bad Company and Free singer Paul Rodgers, and a renewed sense of more to come.  Much to their surprise, Queen would find themselves on the popular TV program American Idol performing with a young flamboyant contestant, singer Adam Lambert, who would join Queen this year to tour America, Australia and New Zealand with the band selling out arenas everywhere.

Meanwhile Brian May and Roger Taylor embarked on a new project, Queen Forever, a unique undertaking that would bring the iconic Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury, who passed away late in 1991, into the 21st century with classic Queen songs plus three never-released Freddie Mercury discoveries with Queen, the spectacular power ballad 'Love Kills', Brian May's 'Let Me in Your Heart Again', even a Freddie Mercury duet with Michael Jackson, all previously unreleased.

Brian May shares with InTheStudio program host Redbeard the concept behind Queen Forever.

'It's an unusual compilation album really, this collection of songs which are not the most obvious ones, but that we feel crystallize certain moments for us. And the icing on the cake is these extra tracks which really no one has ever heard.'

Queen Open Rock Time Capsule InTheStudio : Roger Taylor, Brian May Discuss Live At The Rainbow '74

Dallas, TX - September 3, 2014.  North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands takes the wrapper off Queen Live at the Rainbow '74, a rock time capsule of an embryonic band making the leap from London cult band to stadium filler.

Forty years ago when a young London quartet called Queen headlined the venerable Rainbow Theater there, recording the performance on audio and film was a daunting task, both technologically and financially. Live recording then was much more art than science, no do-overs, no digital tricks, nowhere to hide.

After two studio albums and a trial-by-fire legendary US tour supporting lovable Mott the Hoople, Queen was ready to reign over the Rainbow Theater, and in late March of 1974 they nailed it. The performance was so strong that the band would return in November of that year to play two more sold-out shows in support of their third album Sheer Heart Attack.

Queen drummer Roger Taylor explains to InTheStudio host Redbeard how during preparation for the band's most recent 2013/2014 tour the Rainbow concert tapes resurfaced.
'I had a copy of the Rainbow live... in my car. I was on my way to rehearsal on the first day and I said to Brian, 'These tracks are great!' I forgot that we were a really heavy band.'

Guitarist Brian May continues, 'There weren't any tricks to be had. It's all live and dangerous, as it is now with us. We knew what we were doing in those days. We were very clear and we were very well oiled in a sense; we knew each other very well.'

QUEEN TO RELEASE RARE RECORDING OF LANDMARK CONCERT

QUEEN: LIVE AT THE RAINBOW '74

Previously unreleased first live album finally surfaces after 40 year wait.

New York, NY (June 16, 2014)--Sunday March 31, 1974 is a landmark date in the history of rock music. It is now celebrated in the multi format release of a rare recording made at legendary London venue The Rainbow, of a concert by a then up-and-coming band called Queen. Few who turned up for that iconic performance could have predicted they would go on to become arguably the world's best and most successful rock group, although many more may have suspected it after this stunning show.

Among the unique material contained in this release are over a dozen tracks never previously released on any official Queen live album. The release will come in CD, Vinyl and standard DVD or SD Blu-Ray formats available as standard releases or special limited edition sets as well as digital formats.

That concert, being heard live for the first time in the soon to be released Queen: Live at the Rainbow '74, marked the culmination of the band's countrywide tour, their first as headliners - hot on the heels of a tour supporting Mott the Hoople, late in 1973, on which they were widely regarded as having blown the hit band off the stage. Queen got rave reviews, almost unheard of for a support band, and it was obvious that in future they would be top of the bill. The band's momentum had been building since the release of their eponymous album in July 1973 and, following their success on the Mott tour, at the beginning of 1974 they were tipped as Band of the Year in UK music paper Disc and Music Echo.

Just before the March Rainbow gig, Queen performed their new single Seven Seas of Rhye on must-see UK TV music show Top of the Pops. The highly coveted slot was a lucky break - they filled in for an absent David Bowie, who was unavailable - and the band made the most of it, delivering a thrilling performance that pushed the song into the Top 10.

Although the group now had a first hit single under its belt, and second album Queen II had just been released to critical acclaim, many felt that playing The Rainbow was overambitious. It was the premier London venue of the time, on a par with L.A.'s Palladium and New York's Fillmore East. But the band had paid its dues, slugging it out in clubs and college halls for four years, and never doubting their own potential. The band's confidence was vindicated when the venue quickly sold out the capacity of more than 3,000 seats ' with some fans paying as much as '1.20 for a ticket!

Queen's performance was spectacular from the second that Freddie Mercury strutted onto the stage in his soon to become trademark white 'eagle suit', a tight -fitting number specially made for him by top fashion designer Zandra Rhodes, which featured flowing winged sleeves. He pranced and posed, capturing the audience in seconds with his extraordinary voice and stage presence, while Brian May provided the counterpoint with his remarkable and ground-breaking guitar playing. The powerful 'engine room' (as they liked to call it) of drummer Roger Taylor and bass player John Deacon completed a sound unlike anything British audiences had previously heard. Enraptured fans clapped and cheered, and gave the band a standing ovation.

That electrifying show was recorded by Roy Thomas Baker, co-producer of Queen's first four studio albums, and slated to be the band's third album (and debut live album) - a career defining release like James Brown's Live At The Apollo or The Who's Live At Leeds. Intended to be a recording that captured the magic of a live band firing on all cylinders, Queen: Live at the Rainbow '74 would undoubtedly have been a big success. But Queen's ferocious creative momentum produced a stack of new songs begging to be recorded and instead of releasing the live album the band went into the studio to record what was to become 1974's breakthrough album, Sheer Heart Attack.  As a result the already completed Rainbow live album was shelved and consigned to the archives.

Later in 1974 Queen had their first chart-topping single, Killer Queen, which encapsulated their brand of driving rock and clever lyrics. It appeared on Sheer Heart Attack, which was released in the autumn, was a massive hit and remains to this day many fans' favourite Queen album. To celebrate this success and crown a remarkable year, Queen returned to The Rainbow in November 1974 for two sell-out gigs that were even more spectacular than the one in March.  These concerts included the typically flamboyant performance of Now I'm Here with which they had been wowing audiences on the tour. It featured Freddie apparently appearing in a spotlight on opposite sides of the stage almost simultaneously. The concerts received massive acclaim from fans and critics alike, and won over many who had until then doubted the band's potential. In this year, Queen also undertook their first concerts in Australia, USA, Sweden, Finland, Holland, Belgium and Spain.

Now, a remarkable 40 years later, Queen: Live at the Rainbow '74 has finally surfaced from the archives, providing an invaluable record of emerging superstars demonstrating their talent.

Queen, Virgin Records and Eagle Rock Entertainment are proud to announce that Queen: Live at the Rainbow '74 will be released on September 8, 2014 (UK on Virgin Records) and September 9, 2014 (US through Hollywood Records) in a variety of formats all newly mixed and mastered to the highest contemporary standard. These range from a standard two CD package, a DVD, an SD Blu-ray, a gate-fold double vinyl (including an audio reproduction of the aforementioned original live album), a quadruple vinyl boxed set, to a super deluxe collector's edition. This comprehensive and fascinating package includes two CDs, a DVD and Blu-Ray, a 60 page hardback book containing many rare photographs, and various items of memorabilia such as reproductions of the tickets, show souvenir programme and poster, as well as material from the band members' personal archives. (Full details of the various packages which will be released can be found at the end of this release).  Vinyl and super deluxe formats are released as limited editions.

These recordings capture Queen at that time in all their glory: the dramatic stage presence, the highly original self-penned repertoire of songs, high-energy performances coupled with stunning melodic and harmonic content, and the uncompromising perfectionist approach to every aspect of their performance which is still maintained to this day.

Queen dazzled their audiences in 1974 with an unforgettable show delivered with a skill and confidence which belied their youth.  The tape machines were rolling, capturing the highly electric performances.  Now, to mark the 40th anniversary of these legendary shows, here, finally, is Queen: Live at the Rainbow '74 - lovingly restored, edited, mixed and digitally mastered, and including much footage never previously seen. It is a collection every Queen fan will want to possess.

Queen will be touring North America, Asia and Australia this summer with virtuoso vocalist Adam Lambert. The tour kicks off June 19th at Chicago's United Center. Tour dates and ticket information can be found at queenonline.com.

Some fascinating (and noteworthy) facts about Queen: Live at the Rainbow '74:

The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke, (from Queen II) was inspired by a painting by Richard Dadd (1817-1886) which now hangs in the Tate Gallery, having been donated to the gallery by war poet Siegfried Sassoon. The song is by far the most significant song on the Rainbow project in terms of rarity. The March 31st show was the last time Queen performed it in concert and this is the only known live recording of the song. The track's appearance on this package is likely to be the biggest surprise on the set.

Great King Rat and Modern Times Rock'n'Roll (from the first album), See What A Fool I've Been (the non-album B-side of Seven Seas of Rhye) and Flick of the Wrist (from Sheer Heart Attack), are also included on an official Queen live product for the first time.

The November show was released in part (not full) on the 1992 VHS, part of the little-known Box of Tricks package, but the March show has never been officially released.

On the 1992 VHS Liar and Keep Yourself Alive (from first album), Father To Son (from Queen II) and Jailhouse Rock only featured in part, whereas now on Queen: Live at the Rainbow '74 they are full versions for the first time. Modern Times Rock'n'Roll, Flick Of The Wrist, Seven Seas of Rhye and Big Spender (all from November) were NOT on the VHS video, so this is the first time they have emerged.

The following 15 songs from March and November Rainbow 1974 concerts have never appeared on any official Queen live album before (this excludes video): Procession, Father to Son, Ogre Battle, Son and Daughter, White Queen, Great King Rat, The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke, Modern Times Rock'n'Roll, Liar, See What A Fool I've Been, Flick of the Wrist, In the Lap of the Gods (not to be confused with In The Lap Of The Gods... Revisited), The March of the Black Queen, Bring Back that Leroy Brown and Stone Cold Crazy.
