MICHAEL MONROE To Release ‘Blackout States’ On October 16

Release Year:
2015
Friday, October 16, 2015
Categories:
News Feed

MICHAEL MONROE - hugely influential fronntman, force of nature, multi-instrumentalist and revered rock 'n' roll icon—will release a new studio album, Blackout States, on Friday, October 16 via Spinefarm Records.

This 13-track outing was produced by Chips Kiesbye (Hellacopters, Nomads) in Gothenburg, Sweden, and mixed by Petri Majuri in Helsinki, Finland.

It is the follow-up to Horns and Halos, a Finnish chart-topper in 2013.

With Blackout States, Monroe's current touring and recording outfit, comprised of bassist Sami Yaffa (ex-Hanoi Rocks/New York Dolls), guitarist Steve Conte (ex-New York Dolls/Company of Wolves), guitarist Rich Jones (ex-Black Halos/Amen), and drummer Karl Rockfist (ex-Chelsea Smiles/Danzig), provided strong creative support for a groundbreaking artist whose reputation continues to flourish. Many of rock's most noted performers, including Dave Grohl and Slash, have cited Monroe's unwavering drive and three-decade-plus career as a genuine source of inspiration.

Indeed, when Slash headlines the Ice Hall in Helsinki on May 28, Monroe will be the invited "Special Guest," opening the show in front of thousands of fans; after that, he heads across to London to play the Camden Rocks Festival on May 30.

This one-off UK appearance at Camden Proud will be filmed by celebrated videographer/photographer Ville Juurikkala as part of the video for the first single from Blackout States.

As with Horns and Halos, the new recordings see Monroe both toasting the future and honoring the past, occasionally giving the nod to glam punk pioneers, Hanoi Rocks, the group with which he forged his name in the early-to mid-'80s.

Says Monroe, "I'm extremely excited about our new album, Blackout States. It has all the ingredients of a perfect rock 'n' roll record: strong melodic songs with great meaningful lyrics that defy all clichés, delivered with a punky, ballsy attitude by a killer band. I highly recommend Blackout States to anyone who's even a little bit interested in what real, authentic, high energy rock 'n' roll at its best sounds like today."

Monroe has a number of festival appearances locked into place for the spring and summer, with further international touring plans to be announced shortly.

Singer/Songwriter Tim Hockenberry, known to many as a vocalist with Trans-Siberian Orchestra, is recording a new solo album made up of all original songs.

Hockenberry was a featured vocalist with TSO for four tours, nightly performing his cover of the Savatage classic, “Believe”, to millions of fans.  He can also be found singing lead on TSO’s last two releases, Nightcastle and Dreams of Fireflies.  After his departure from TSO, Tim wrote, recorded and performed with Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart on his Mysterium Tremendum album and tour.  Tim gained national fame in 2012 when he performed and made it to the semi-finals (last singer standing) on America’s Got Talent. He was a favorite of judge Howard Stern, earning high praise from Stern after each performance.

For many years, Hockenberry has developed a following as a gifted interpreter of well-known cover songs. For the first time in his career, he is releasing an album of all original songs written by Tim, with two co-written by his sons.

To help support the album’s production and promotion costs, Hockenberry has launched a Kickstarter fan campaign, which offers an array of rewards including CDs, Skype sessions and personal concerts. More information is available here:

Ozzy Osbourne/Firewind guitarist Gus G reveals teaser clip, artwork and tracklisting for his second solo album; 'Brand New Revolution'

Check out an exclusive teaser clip featuring a snippet from opening track 'The Quest' here: https://youtu.be/bv8FSY_xnJs

After having recently announced his upcoming sophomore solo album release 'Brand New Revolution' via Century Media Records in Europe, Australia and South America, Dismanic / eOne in North America and King Records in Japan, Ozzy Osbourne / Firewind guitarist GUS G. is now ready to launch a few more details about it.

'Brand New Revolution' will be released in Europe on July 24, 2015 and comes with artwork (which can be seen above!) once again created by Gustavo Sazes / www.abstrata.net, who already worked with GUS G. on his debut release 'I Am The Fire', and also took care of artwork duties by bands such as Arch Enemy, Kamelot and also Firewind in the past.

The album features guest vocal appearances by Jeff Scott Soto (ex-Journey, Talisman), Elize Ryd (Amaranthe), Jacob Bunton (Adler, Lynam) and Mats Lev'n (Candlemass, ex-Yngwie Malmsteen).

2. Brand New Revolution (feat. Jacob Bunton)
3. Burn (feat. Jacob Bunton)
4. We Are One (feat. Jacob Bunton)
5. What Lies Below (feat. Elize Ryd)
6. Behind Those Eyes (feat. Jacob Bunton)
7. Gone To Stay (feat. Jeff Scott Soto)
8. One More Try (feat. Jacob Bunton)
9. Come Hell Or High Water (feat. Mats Levin)
10. If It Ends Today (feat. Mats Levin)
11. Generation G (feat. Jeff Scott Soto)
12. The Demon Inside (feat. Mats Levin)

GUS G. checked in with the following comment about the album: 'As I'm putting the final touches on 'Brand New Revolution', I wanted to give out a bit about the new music. 'The Quest" is the only instrumental of the album and it's a heavy, high energy, technical track. The rest of the album once again features collaborations with some awesome singers / songwriters such as the legendary Jeff Scott Soto, Mats Lev'n, Jacob Bunton and the awesome Elize Ryd of Amaranthe. I feel the album as a whole has many influences, from classic Hard Rock / Metal to more modern and current sounds. Stay tuned as more info will be revealed in the coming days'.

'Brand New Revolution' was recorded with Jay Ruston (Stone Sour, Anthrax, Steel Panther, etc.) and mixed by Mike Fraser (Metallica, AC/DC, Van Halen, Aerosmith, etc.). Just as on 'I Am The Fire', the core of GUS G.'s recording group consisted of Jo Nunez (Firewind) on drums and Marty O' Brien (Lita Ford band) on bass.

GUS G. has recently also announced a few more first summer live-dates to launch 'Brand New Revolution'.

SKINTRADE Unleash 'Scarred For Life' July 24

AOR Heaven will release the new SKINTRADE album Scarred For Life on July 24

[]

SKINTRADE was formed in 1992 by Matti Alfonzetti (vocals), George Bravo (guitar, backing vocals), Stefan Bergström (guitar, backing vocals), Hakan Calmroth (bass) and Håkan Persson (drums, backing vocals). The group's self-titled debut was released in 1993 and received overwhelmingly positive respnse from both media and audience. The singles "Sick As A Dog" and "One By One" were played frequently on the radio and their videos spun on MTV's "Headbangers Ball".
The same year, SKINTRADE was honored with a Zeppelin award for "Best Hard Rock Album" and was nominated for a Swedish Grammis (Grammy equivalent) in the category of "Best Video”. The follow-up CD, "Roach Powder", came out in 1995 with Thomas Skogsberg as a producer (ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER). The videos for the singles "Snap Goes Your Mind" and "Flies" were played regularly on MTV.

Between 1993 and 1995, SKINTRADE embarked on several tours of Europe and played at some of Sweden's and Europe's biggest festivals such as Sweden Rock, Hultsfred, Dala Rock, Dynamo Open Air (Holland) and Rock Am Ring (Germany). SKINTRADE also supported the Danish band D-A-D on their European tour in 1995. One of their last and most memorable gigs took place in late 1995 with the Irish band THERAPY? during a live radio show in Amsterdam, Netherlands. SKINTRADE disbanded shortly thereafter.

The idea for the SKINTRADE members to collaborate again came about as they got more and more requests from fans asking them to make new music. During the first rehearsal in May 2011, it became obvious that the band's chemistry was very much intact. In the summer and autumn of 2011, SKINTRADE recorded four new songs at Sound Trade Studios with their old friend and partner Ronny Lahti, engineer and producer who previously worked with the band on all the recordings in the '90s. SKINTRADE's "best-of" album, "Past And Present", was released in March 2012 via Universal Music. The CD includes three new songs and 12 classics.

Their new album, ¨Scarred For Life”, will be released via AOR Heaven on July 24th, 2015. Once again the CD was recorded and mixed by Oscar Ammer. This time Skintrade also worked with producer Geo Slam on the song ”Wide Awake” originally recorded by Katy Perry and written by Max Martin.

Track listing: 01. Scarred for Life,
02.Goodbye,
03. Wide Awake,
04. Lay With Me, 05. Find A Way,
06. LoveHate,
07. Leave A Scar,
08. Broken,
09. Storm Will Come,
10. 15 Minutes Gone

Release Year:

After 7 years of touring and 3 releases, DENIED has parted with singer Johan Fahlberg.

Founding member Andreas Carlsson said, 'We have shared great times together and created a lot of kick ass heavy metal. We are still the best of friends and there is absolutely no bad blood between him and the band". Johan needed to focus on his commitment to Jaded Heart and there was simply not enough time for the both bands any longer. We fully understand his decision to quit. He will always be our brother'

The vacancy for a new front man has been filled by acclaimed vocalist GERMAN PASCUAL (ex Narnia, Divinefire, Minds Eye, Empire 21). 'German's experience, skill and great personality made our decision very easy. We are now excited to continue the DENIED-journey together and the best is yet to come".

This summer the band will head into the studio to record the follow up to the 2013 album Let them burn. Once again produced by Fredrik Folkare, also mastermind of swedish UNLEASHED.

ELEFANTE was produced by Matt Thorne (Trapt/Disturbed), Marq Torien and engineered by Ryan Greene (Alice Cooper/Lita Ford/Cheap Trick/Usher). The great Anthony Focx (Miley Cyrus/Aerosmith/Santana/Buckcherry) mastered this new work of art. “Working with the Bulletboys was an amazing experience,” explains Ryan Greene. “Most singers, from back in the 80's, were pretty good but I will tell you Marq knocked it out of the park on this record. His power and passion was second to none and he can sing in tune! No auto-tune needed, he's the real freak’n deal.  If you think for a second this is going to be some rehashed 80's record you are completely wrong!”

Former ANGEL Frontman FRANK DIMINO Comeback Album 'Old Habits Die Hard'

Artist:
Release Year:
2015
Friday, July 3, 2015
Categories:
News Feed

Frontiers Music Srl announces the release of the hotly anticipated comeback album from former ANGEL singer Frank DIMINO, entitled “Old Habits Die Hard” on July 3rd in Europe and July 10th in North America.

While Frank is undoubtedly the brainchild of DIMINO, “Old Habits Die Hard” sees him collaborate with some heavyweights of the Las Vegas music scene, where he currently resides. Under the production of Paul Crook (MEAT LOAF, ANTHRAX), the album sees the participation – among others - of Oz Fox (STRYPER), Eddie Ojeda (TWISTED SISTER), Rickey Medlocke (BLACKFOOT, LYNYRD SKYNYRD), Pat Thrall (HUGHES/THRALL), Jeff Duncan (ARMORED SAINT), Jeff Labansky, former ANGEL bandmates Punky Meadows (on guitar) and Barry Brandt (who co-wrote with Frank the song “Even Now”) and many others.

Frank says, “It all started because of the relationships between Ken Ciancimino, Paul Crook, myself and the musicians that appeared on the album. I started writing songs with Oz Fox and Jeff Labansky and then Paul suggested we use John Miceli (drums) and Danny Miranda (bass) as our rhythm section and Justin Avery for keys & background vocals because of his relationship from playing with them for Meat Loaf. When the recording started, our friends wanted to be part of it and one after the other Pat Thrall, Punky Meadows, Eddie Ojeda, Rickey Medlocke and Jeff Duncan provided their amazing musicianship to the album. I feel truly honored to have had all these great musicians be a part of this project!

Frank Dimino was the frontman for ANGEL in the second half of the 70’s. The band was discovered by KISS bass player Gene Simmons who got them signed to Casablanca Records, where they released 5 critically acclaimed studio albums and one live one. After the band’s demise, Dimino went on to work with UFO’s Paul Raymond and worked as a singer on soundtracks, scoring a Platinum album for the inclusion of his song “Seduce Me Tonight” with Cycle V on the “Flashdance” soundtrack.

“Old Habits Die Hard” is going to take many by surprise, as it is definitely not a nostalgia fest, but really a rather compelling and inspired Hard Rock release. Frank says: “I'm excited to reach new fans as well as many Angel fans. There is certainly a connection between then and now, and that is still about making a great record with great musicians!

Frank Dimino is now back and here to stay. Look out for DIMINO live shows soon in a city near you!

Enjoy the video for “Rockin’ In The City” here:

“Old Habits Die Hard” tracklisting: Never Again; Rockin’ In The City; I Can’t Stop Loving You; The Rain’s About To

Frontiers Music Srl announces the release of Veronica Freeman’s solo project THE V debut album entitled "Now or Never" on July 3rd in Europe and July 10th in North America.

Veronica “The V” Freeman is the iconic singer of the Heavy Metal heavyweights Benedictum and THE V marks a major step out of her comfort zone, since it delves into a definite melodic Hard Rock vibe.

An impressive array of talent has stepped up to assist THE V in creating her solo project on many levels. The list includes Pete Wells, Aric Avina and Rikard Stjernquist of BENEDICTUM, Michael Sweet (STRYPER), Garry Bordonaro (THE RODS), Jeff Pilson (DOKKEN, FOREIGNER), Mike Lepond (SYMPHONY X), Tony Martin (BLACK SABBATH), Leather Leone (CHASTAIN), Jerry Dixon (WARRANT), Jimmy Durkin (DARK ANGEL), Mick Tucker (TANK), Jordan Ziff (AGE OF EVIL), Derek Kerswill (UNEARTH, KINGDOM OF SORROW), Peter Tentindo (VENUS MARS PROJECT), John Herrera, Ryan Greene, Kenny Lewis, Meliesa McDonell, Michael Harris , Mel Brown and John O’Boyle.

Veronica comments: "I had a lot of input and encouragement from Frontiers to try and stretch myself with different musical styles and approaches. It was great to be able to work with Pete Wells writing some of these songs too. So, it was a no-brainer to accept their proposal for a solo album. I am a bit nervous and beyond excited!"

Be prepared! If you thought Veronica was just a Heavy Metal Amazon, you’re going to be proven dead wrong! This is a massive Melodic Hard Rock record with some great lead vocals which show a lot of the original influences that brought “THE V” to be one of the most well know and recognized voices in the current Metal scene!

In February 2014, U.D.O. played a very special sold out show, accompanied by a German Navy Orchestra (Marinemusikkorps Nordsee). The symphonic sound of the orchestra and the choir  merged with the songs of U.D.O.  and made the evening a unique unforgettable experience for the audience.

This bombastic live event will now be made available for all fans of U.D.O., either on DVD or BluRay plus 2 CDs.

And at this year’s WACKEN OPEN AIR, the unique musical collaboration can be seen live on stage  again, this time with the German Federal Armed Forces Orchestra.

"I was simply overwhelmed by the whole event, it’ss like a dream came true”,  Udo Dirkschneider states. “It’s really more than words can say. This DVD will be something special to me, definitely a highlight of my career.”
“Navy Metal Night” is produced by Mattes & Björn Schlüter and co-produced by Udo Dirkschneider. Mixed by Mattes & Björn at Redhead Studio A, Wilhelmshaven and mastered by Jacob Hansen at Hansen Studios, Ribe, Denmark.

Statement from vocalist PHIL VINCENT announcing his departure from LEGION:

"It is with both disappointment and extreme excitement that I must announce my departure as vocalist and songwriter of the band Legion. It was an honor and pleasure working with Vince O'Regan and I am very proud of the music we created but the lack of financial support, peripheral interference, and new musical opportunities, have combined to lead me to this decision.

The new ventures that have presented themselves will take precedence for me from this day forward and I must dedicate 100% of my time and effort toward these projects. I am very confident my new musical creations will excite and satisfy my fan base and I look forward to unveiling my music to you and the world. My heartfelt thanks to all the Legion fans for your support over the last 5 years and 7 albums and I look forward to rocking with you again very soon.

Keep an eye on http://www.philvincentbands.com and http://philvincent.com for my next chapter. With great appreciation, Phil Vincent."

VINDICTIV 'World Of Fear' Out On MelodicRock Records July 10

Artist:
Release Year:
2015
Friday, July 10, 2015
Categories:
News Feed
MelodicRock Records is offering a double dose of Swedish class in July. Already announced is the new CONSTANCIA album and now MRR will crank up the metal once again by releasing the new studio album from Swedish melodic/neoclassical metal outfit VINDICTIV on July 10.

The new album World Of Fear is a huge leap forward for the band and features the vocals of superstar MARK BOALS throughout.

MelodicRock Records is excited to launch a full track preview of the coming album, with the track Paralyzed available below:

Once again, following the fantastic reception to the ROOM EXPERIENCE Special Edition, VINDICTIV World On Fire will also be available direct from MRR as a Special Edition limited release – featuring one exclusive bonus track!

Further album details and news of pre-orders will be made available next week.

Also featured on the new album is a perfect cover of the Yngwie Malmsteen classic Far Beyond The Sun. A video for that track has just been released:

VINDICTIV is:
Stefan Lindholm – guitar
Pontus Larsson – keyboards
Nalle Påhlsson – bass
Mark Boals – vocals
Marco Minnemann – drums

History:

One of the best kept secrets of neoclassical metal – so far. Stockholm's Vindictiv introduced themselves to the metal audience in an impressive fashion with their 2008 eponymous debut. The band's sophomore effort ”Ground Zero” followed swiftly the following year, and remains a fan favorite.
From this point on Vindictiv's career path got rockier. ”Cage Of Infinity” arrived in 2013, following an acrimonious split between guitarist Stefan Lindholm and his other band Raven Lord.

Vindictiv's fourth and current effort ”World Of Fear” was created under more harmonious circumstances, and to their guitarist marks both a progression and a return to form.

”The sound is harder, but also more melody-oriented”, muses Stefan (whose resumé also includes Phenomena and Black Sabbath legend Tony Martin). ”Some fans may have found the last album too metallic, but this is more in the veins of ”Ground Zero”.
”Wall Of Pain” is a catchy heavy metal anthem with plenty of double bassdrums. ”Until The Dawn” is slower, a semi-ballad – a little something for the ladies. ”Day” is somewhat poppy – more of a major chord-vibe, unlike the minor chord-oriented remaining songs. At the same time, this is a more technical album than the previous one. I deliver my usual masturbation-style solos!”

Lest we forget – ”World Of Fear” introduces the most star-studded Vindictiv lineup yet. Present as always are Stefan's faithful cohorts Pontus Larsson on keyboards and renowned bass player Nalle Påhlsson (Therion, Treat, Last Autumn's Dream).
By their side we find virtuoso drummer Marco Minnemann (Kreator, Joe Satriani, Steven Wilson) and singer Mark Boals (Yngwie Malmsteen, Royal Hunt, Dokken). The latter is arguably the most famous on a long list of Vindictiv frontmen that includes Tommy Karevik (Kamelot, Seventh Wonder), Nils Molin (Dynazty), Oliver Hartmann (At Vance, Avantasia) and Göran Edman (Yngwie Malmsteen, John Norum).

”Mark is someone I've known for some time and it was great to finally make a whole album with him”, says Stefan. ”Marco is a very easy-going guy. I hooked up with him on Facebook and he agreed to do the album as soon as he heard the songs. He's such a quick worker, he nailed his parts almost before he received the songs from me.”

As additional icing on the cake, ”World Of Fear” features guest solos from two keyboard exceptionals. Mark Basile is best known as the singer in Italy's own DGM. The recently deceased Mats Olausson has made stellar contributions to the likes of Yngwie Malmsteen, Lion's Share, Ark and Evil Masquerade.
”These sessions may be the last that Mats ever did before his passing”, says Stefan. ”He appears on three songs, including a cover version of Yngwie Malmsteen's ”Far Beyond The Sun”. Such a sweet guy. We dedicate ”World Of Fear” to him.”

Have Vindictiv finally found a stable lineup? If it's up to their guitarist, the answer is yes.
”I'd really like to bring an element of permanency to the band. And the odds of us five performing live together look real favorable. Sure, some members are busy people and Mark and Marco live in the US. But my goal is to get Vindictiv back on stage and Mark is already on board. After all, playing live is the most fun part of all about being in a band.”

With any luck, these plans will quickly come to fruition. ”World of fear” marks the rebirth of Vindictiv, and it's due time that the band goes from ”best kept secret of neoclassical metal” to ”best revealed secret of neoclassical metal”.

Tom Cochrane is one of my favourite singer/songwriters of all time. He’s right up there with Rick Springfield, John Waite and Paul Laine. I cannot emphasize how much many of his songs mean to me personally.
However, with just a measly two studio albums since 1998’s excellent X-Ray Siera, Tom’s really pushing fan patience. With an 8 year wait between albums, they had better be good.

I’ve left reviewing this album for a while as the last album No Stranger got an initially tepid response from myself, rating it too mellow, too laid back and lacking any real drive.
How wrong that initial assessment was. The album is one I’ve come to appreciate more over time, a very fine release indeed, with some of Tom’s most heartfelt ballads and while laid back, it also features some of his finest lyrical moments.
So with the arrival of Take It Home and that similar initial disappointment for the same reasons – laid back, slow and seemingly very lackluster, I held back to give the album time to grow.

Unfortunately it hasn’t. Tom’s declined further into the slow, acoustic driven old-man-syndrome that other artists like Bob Seger have suffered.
What’s worse, Take It Home crosses genre’s to touch on that other ‘must go to place’ for veteran artists – yes, that Nashville/country vibe, with slide guitar and a distinct twang featured on several tracks.
The album is diverse in nature, covering blues, country, roots and gospel, all delivered with Cochrane’s distinctive wail.
But despite the valid musical integrity of such an outing, there are only a handful of songs that resonate with me here at all, which is tragic when you consider how long fans have waited for this.

On the plus side is the pop/rock mid-tempo acoustic Can’t Stay Here, which despite a country slant features a nice smooth vocal and decent chorus.
Diamonds is more Tom Cochrane sounding and is a refreshing high quality mid-tempo tune.
Despite the title, Country Girls Never Get Old, still manages to deliver a crossover old/new TC sound, mixing slide guitar with organ and electric guitar.
Pink Time is a beautiful laid back ballad with some extraordinary co-lead female vocals (from who I don’t know, I have a digital promo only thus far).

On the negative for me is several unfortunately. The jangly lead single Sunday Afternoon Hang is simply Life Is A Highway meets Kid Rock and is the best of neither; When The Light Starts To Fade is pure blues/country but goes nowhere; First Time Around is a distorted fuzz/rock tune that just grates; A Prayer For Hope is old-school country and Back In The Game is just hokey R&B.

Tom’s vision of creating a southern American themed album featuring country, blues and gospel is achieved here. There’s a lot of heart and soul poured into these songs and for that you can’t fault Tom. But for me it’s just not something I want to keep coming back to, especially when some of the songs just don’t have enough life in them to draw you back and a couple of others just grate on my ears.
There are a couple of new TC classics for sure and the depth of lyrical talent is still there, but the catchiness and the traditional Tom Cochrane sound is not.

There are a lot of big names releases this year already with plenty more to come. It’s just one of those banner years. But we must not ignore the newer bands and indie releases as it isn’t just the big boys that can deliver.

One such act is Illinois rockers Red Monday. Formed around guitarist/songwriter and producer Jim Miller and mixed and mastered by Ides Of March’s Larry Millas, with guest spots from Millas and fellow Ideas man Scott May; Red Monday produce a brand of guitar driven classic rock with an organic Midwestern feel.

Sometimes the guitars break out a little more such as the spirited opener She’s On Fire and the fast paced Sanctuary and bar room rocker You Move Me.
Elsewhere on the album the sound diversifies into Tom Petty, John Kilzer and John Mellencamp territory, albeit with a more prominent guitar presence.
It’s quite a varied album, but the best quality here is the production – it’s a big sound for an indie release and Millas has delivered a very balanced mix.

There’s a lot to like about this album. The only small issue I have is with the vocals. Singer Rick Harris has a tone that’s not for everyone and I think takes away from a couple of songs. On others it’s no issue at all, but surprisingly Jim Miller takes lead on the upbeat southern rocker Broken Promises and I find myself preferring his voice over the main one.
That’s a small issue though and one which different folks are going to have different views on.

Fans of classic rock, Midwestern Americana and 80s American hard rock should take a listen to the album via the showcase on this site.
They might just be another new band worth adding to your collection.

Since reforming, Magnum has kept an increasingly busy recording/touring schedule that bands half their age would be envious of. The band’s last studio album was Escape From The Shadow Garden, which has spawned this document of the tour that followed.
There are very few heritage bands that have a fan base willing to indulge the band with a set list heavy with new songs rather than relying on milking the classics to within an inch of their life.

But each album and each tour sees Magnum change things up to showcase the new material and the fans lap it up, and here is no different.
The entire first half of this live album is all new tracks and I have to say, they translate into the live arena beautifully. There’s energy there, there’s passion and conviction in the delivery.
Live Til You Die and the ultra-heavy Dance Of The Black Tattoo shine; while the second half of the set includes the legendary All England’s Eyes, Kingdom of Madness, Les Morts Dansant (another stunning version), plus a just brilliant version of Vigilante and an iconic 11 minute How Far Jerusalem.

Bob Catley might sound a little croakier than once upon a time, but his tone and delivery still capture my attention and respect every time.
The band packs a punch as usual and the recording quality and the live mix is really impressive.

Another memorable live release from one of Britain’s great melodic rock acts. A rousing delivery of some new and old makes for a really enjoyable ride.
Essential for all long time fans I would say.

The Former Lead Singer Of JOURNEY, That Never Was

Artist:
Release Year:
2015
Categories:
News Feed

The headline reads “Hard to believe a Burlington boy was the lead singer of the iconic rock band Journey, but Andy K Avery was just that…”

Except he wasn’t.

Andy K Avery tours as a Christian artist and speaker and is involved in substance abuse counselling.
Andy is promoted as “becoming an addict to drugs, alcohol…eventually landed himself in federal prison. Today, Avery travels to prisons, churches and schools to minister to kids and adults.”

Now that’s obviously a very positive thing and is not any part of the issue being addressed here.
The problem is that in the same bio text Andy promotes himself as a former lead singer of Journey.

The following is typical of the text used to promote himself, text found on multiple websites, multiple interviews and newspaper articles:

Andy Avery, a former lead singer of the rock band Journey….talking about his life and testimony. Avery joined the band in 1989 after lead singer Steve Perry was unable to perform.”

As an explanation for that stand in performance you can hear Andy himself state (Link 1 below) that “Steve Perry had some health problems…” (1.40) and he sang for the band on one gig.
Further to that (in Link 2) he claims he was “in the process of taking over as lead singer of Journey…”

And this: “After going to rehab more than once, he returned to the music world and was given the opportunity to fill in for the lead singer of Journey. He sang one concert, overdosed and lost his voice.”

He has been all over Christian talk back radio and various local press promoting his time with Journey. In Link 1 at the 4.15 mark he answers this question from the DJ- “Do you keep in contact with members of Journey” with this startling claim:

“No, in fact the only person I talk to ironically is Steve Perry himself and we have become good friends….he supports me 100%...It’s a wonderful relationship and for a long time I wasn’t even allowed to say my testimony, for 15 or 20 years I wasn’t allowed. Only over the last few years I have been given permission to publicise it, through the band’s management – as long as I’m helping kids and doing things like that…they support me on that.”

Yet another promotional excerpt; “Andy has led a very interesting life, singing in rock and roll bands like Journey, Head East, and Smoke House. He’s also opened for Kiss, Bon Jovi, and many others. But according to Andy, the best time of his life followed his pledge to Christ when he started using his singing gifts to advance the kingdom. If you have heard Lee Greenwood sing "God Bless the USA," you have heard Andy Avery. He sang the demo for the song that resulted in the record company signing Greenwood. Andy now travels the country, performing and leading worship for one purpose only: GOD. Andy’s latest adventure is "A Tribute to Journey" tour, as he is the former lead singer of that group.”

And yet again: “Once upon a time Andy Avery was chosen to be the lead singer of the band Journey.  That’s right.  JOURNEY!  I had the honor to meet Andy, sit down with him, and have an awesome conversation.  Andy has an amazing story.  One that you’ll want to hear….”

And if that’s not enough evidence of a calculated publicity campaign, there’s this:

“Andy Avery was the lead singer for the group Smokehouse before getting opportunities to fill in for Journey in Steve Perry’s absence. When Perry left the group, Avery was approached about becoming a member of the band, but believed that his past record of drug and alcohol abuse while in that industry was not a temptation he needed, choosing rather to grow his faith and family.
Music critics acknowledge that Avery sounds strikingly similar to Perry. Avery will perform several of the signature Journey songs, while also sharing Christian music and testimony.  He travels full time and is also a performer for Royal Caribbean Cruises.”

So those are the facts being touted, but time now to look at the actual truth.

First – Andy picked an unfortunate year to claim working with Journey. The band wasn’t even active at that time as just about every fan of the group knows.
The guys last toured in 1987 before taking a hiatus that would only be broken in 1991 for the Bill Graham Memorial.
1989 was of course the year Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain were part of Bad English’s chart topping run and subsequent tour.

But we do know that strange things have happened off the record and behind the scenes at times, so I contacted all parties involved for comment.

Neal Schon: “Never heard of him” and “this is bullshit and should be taken down.”

Journey management confirmed that this person was completely unknown to them and there was no negotiations whatsoever with him.

Andy is heavily promoting some upcoming shows with John Schlitt and John Elefante. So I reached out to John who added this:

“This situation has really disturbed me and I called Andy and had a fairly lengthy talk with him and told him to cease and desist the Journey thing ASAP!! He's just the opening act for me and John Schlitt.”

Of course, it is only fair to allow Andy himself to have his say, so I contacted him via his Facebook pages (https://www.facebook.com/andyaveryfans / https://www.facebook.com/Superfantasticproductions ) and received the following replies:

“Gene Simmons was my manager and when I messed up on drugs my career was over and he kept all my music ... I was in Smokehouse for 8 years and toured with kiss Bon Jovi and many other big acts  ...I auditioned for Journey and landed the gig spent all the up front money on drugs and overdosed ..end of my career ... God has given me my voice back and now I travel and doing and minister to kids ... The ppl that made the poster announced it wrong in which I'm sorry ... my testimony is clear when I give it ... Journey has had 7 diff sonnets that were hired and never toured and one made a cd that never got released …
Also please keep in mind that this was done through my agent at the time tel star ... we were all so messed up on drugs that is very hard to attach what was real and timeline ...The only thing I testify to the kids about is the almost made it story ... the agents in particular have asked me not to mention there names ... I never bill myself as former lead singer ... I promise you i am working  hard at correcting things  staying with dropping my pr person whom I've explained this to many times ...”

When I replied stating that this doesn’t explain the “gig” and could he provide more information, I got this:

“No gig…I was on my way with my agent that fronted allot of money and I woke up 3 months later coming out of a coma in Buena Park ... I only sing Journey songs to lead up to that story ... again sorry for the confusion. We bill ourselves in concert as Wheel in the sky a journey tribute ... Proverbs says God's time is like a wheel in the sky”

And regarding the Steve Perry friendship: “I did meet him long ago and we hit it off very well ... I wasn't the best of ppl back then ... I've worked really hard to get my life in order the last 20 years.”

The only problem here is that the radio interview mentioning the Perry bond was from 2014.

To give Andy the final say: “I'm just a has been, sooner trying to help kids ...”

In that regard, I hope Andy succeeds and wish him all the best. Safe to say that he won’t be boasting of any involvement with Journey in the future.
