Founded in 1997, Stala & So. is known for melodic rock tunes and a positive attitude.
The band has had the freedom to follow their own direction with their music and live performances while entertaining audiences and gathering lots of fans from all over the world along the way. The 70's and 80's glam rock bands, such as Sweet, T-Rex and Ziggy Stardust -era David Bowie, have had a strong influence on the band's image. Stala & So. is making music professionally and also having fun with it. The late Finnish comedian, Spede Pasanen, said: "The main thing is to have FUN!". This has been, and continues to be, the guideline for the band as well.
In the beginning of 2011 the band became familiar to the Finnish tv-viewing people by taking part in the Finnish Eurovision Song Contest. They made their way to the national finals. There is also one ESC 2006 winner in the band's line up. After the Eurovision show it was time for the Finnish release of their self-written, -recorded and -produced debut album "It Is So."

On October 24th the Japanese record company, King Records, released the It Is So. album in Japan and South-East Asia. The German-based music company, Music Buy Mail, released the album in Europe and South America on September. In the fall of 2011 the band recorded five new songs and those were released as an EP, titled "Gimme Five".

In 2013 Stala and so. Signed with Escape Music and released the CD 'Play Another Round' which is exciting catchy, vibrant music that fits in well with the modern rock scene today. There is no doubt that this Finnish band excel in bouncy hard melodic rock with unforgettable chorus lines. Their new CD for 2015 is simply self-titled and it extends their music to another level, this new album recorded more towards the melodic hard rock with bigger hooks and massive choruses are remained etched in your mind after just one play.
Stala and So. are like a breath of fresh air that put a whole new perspective on today's ever changing rock music scene.

It all began in 1982 when the ´New Wave of Britsish Heavy Metal´ stormed in from Great Britain all over Europe. This was the starting point for the passionate and young German band from Muenster. Heavy Metal music was the rule, and sending the first demos ever to the recently founded company ´Roadrunner Records´ made them get one of their first signings. Mad Max were in good company: Bands like Metallica, King Diamond or Lee Aaron were signed to the nowadays very highly acclaimed metal label as well.

The deal ran over three albums, and suddenly the band started touring intensively with bands as Pretty Maids, Yngwie Malmsteen, Uriah Heep or Stryper and playing the legendary „Dynamo Open Air Festival in Eindhoven. Then, in the beginning of the new century, Mad Max signed to SPV and played huge international festivals like Rocklahoma, Wacken, Bang your Head or Rock of Ages, followed by two European Tours as support for Axel Rudi Pell.
Going back to their roots and their very successful period from 1984-87 and they are now bringing out a best of Album:

SHINEDOWN Debut First New Song From Upcoming Album

Artist:
Release Year:
2015
Categories:
News Feed

From Billboard.com:

Shinedown returned today (June 29) with its first new music in three years, a chugging, fist-pumping rocker called "Cut the Cord." The track has been online for a few hours, but Billboard has the premiere of its official video.

Alongisde the requisite rocking, Shinedown sprinkled some interesting production touches into this one. Frontman Brent Smith's guttural vocals are juxtaposed against the choral chant of, "freedom la la la, freedom follow me," throughout the song. And pay attention to the intro for some additional sonic variety. Shinedown bassist Eric Bass handled the production.

About the song, Smith tells Billboard: "'Cut The Cord' is a wake up call reminding us all that we can control our own destiny by finding the courage and tenacity to destroy whatever it is that's holding us back. The process may not be pretty or perfect or even easy, but absolutely necessary. The song is brutally honest and unapologetic, which is what Shinedown has always been."

The intense clip was directed by Darren Doane who previously directed the band's music videos for "Devour," "Sound Of Madness," and "If You Only Knew." He is also working on an upcoming film about Shinedown's history.
"We really wanted the video to match the intensity of the song," Smith says. "We've worked with Darren Doane on several of our videos so there's a real trust between us and it only took a few takes.  Honestly, I don't think we could have done too many more -- we gave it everything we had, literally playing so hard that it physically hurt."

"Cut the Cord" comes from Shinedown's forthcoming fifth album, which is due out later this year. The track will try to match the chart success of Shinedown's previous singles. Their last album featured five singles that peaked in the top five of Mainstream Rock Songs: "Unity" (1), "Bully" (1), "I'll Follow You" (2), "Enemies" (2), and "Adrenaline" (4).

Shinedown's last album was 2012's Amaryllis

On July 9, the Florida-based band embarks on a U.S. tour, beginning with a home state gig in St. Petersburg. All the dates are listed on Shinedown's official site

R.I.P Prog Legend CHRIS SQUIRE (Yes)

Artist:
Release Year:
2015

News Feed

RIP Chris Squire... The progressive rock giant and founding member of YES. An innovator and a inspiration to many.

This from EW.com:

Chris Squire, bassist and founding member of Yes, has died, a month after revealing he had been diagnosed with leukemia. He was 67.

The band confirmed the news Sunday on its official Facebook page, writing: “For the entirety of Yes’ existence, Chris was the band’s linchpin and, in so many ways, the glue that held it together over all these years. Because of his phenomenal bass-playing prowess, Chris influenced countless bassists around the world, including many of today’s well-known artists. Chris was also a fantastic songwriter, having written and co-written much of Yes’ most endearing music, as well as his solo album, Fish Out of Water.”

Squire and singer Jon Anderson co-founded Yes in London in 1968, and although the band’s lineup shifted over the years, Squire was the one constant member, playing bass on all of Yes’ albums and performing with the band for almost 50 years.
In May, Squire announced that he had been diagnosed with acute erythroid leukemia and would consequently miss the band’s upcoming summer tour, marking the first time ever Yes would play a show without him. Billy Sherwood was to step in as bassist.

“This will be the first time since the band formed in 1968 that Yes will have performed live without me,” Squire said in a statement at the time. “But the other guys and myself have agreed that Billy Sherwood will do an excellent job of covering my parts and the show as a whole will deliver the same Yes experience that our fans have come to expect over the years.”

Squire’s bandmate Geoffrey Downes first announced Squire’s death on Twitter.

A new live Asia album/DVD is right up there with those other fan-craved items such as another Styx DVD, a Bret Michaels country album and a new vocalist in Red Dragon Cartel.
But here it is anyway – their 5th live release since reforming and following the quite turgid High Voltage Live release.

Thankfully this is a far superior release. Everything that was wrong with High Voltage is corrected here.
The band is awake, the audio is pro-recorded and the set list an expanded full-show experience.
Naturally it’s die-hards only that are going to be remotely interested in this, especially as it is live album number 5, but the longer set list and the far better production quality has put this release well ahead of the other competing titles.

The enthusiastic San Francisco audience laps up all the usual fan favourites such as Heat of The Moment, Only Time Will Tell, Wildest Dreams, Don’t Cry and The Smile Has Left Your Eyes.
Thrown into the mix are some of the better new tracks, which form a seamless bond with the classics. Face On The Bridge and Extraordinary Life faring the best.

I could well do without the 10 minute drums solo, thankfully the acoustic guitar solo is but one third that length. Definitely better value watching the DVD than on the CD for those two.

Great musicians these guys, but not the most mobile or visually enthralling act around. But with this value for money set, you can tune in with your ears or eyes depending on mood and appreciate the best songs of this classic rock act.
If you have the other 4 live releases, this won’t surprise, but it will impress.

What Is The Status Of Drummer DEEN CASTRONOVO In JOURNEY

Artist:
Release Year:
2015
Categories:
News Feed

Drummer Deen Castronovo has been stood aside from his role in JOURNEY while he faces domestic violence charges in his home state of Oregon.

Some media outlets have been reporting that Deen has been ‘sacked’ or ‘kicked out’ of the band, replaced with Neal Schon’s Vortex drummer Omar Hakim for the current and upcoming Canadian dates.
But at this time, Deen remains part of Journey and his absence is currently only temporary.

The official comment on Deen’s status is “no comment”, but I can suggest that his arrest is being treated very seriously by the Journey camp. However, it is hoped that Deen is found innocent of the charges he faces and should that happen, his path back to the drum stood should be unimpeded.

JOURNEY Adds NEAL “VORTEX” SCHON As Special Guest On Canadian Tour

Omar Hakim Tapped to Play Drums for both JOURNEY and NEAL “VORTEX” SCHON

NEAL “VORTEX” SCHON has been added as the special guest to JOURNEY’s upcoming Canadian tour, which launches Monday, July 6 in Winnipeg Manitoba with concerts scheduled through August 3 in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. This tour marks the first time the American rock greats perform a Canada-only tour, including markets in which band has never previously performed such as Penticton; Prince George; and Dawson Creek, British Columbia; and Lethbridge, Alberta. See below for a complete list of tour dates. Tickets are on sale now - visit www.journeymusic.com for complete tour and ticketing information.

NEAL "VORTEX" SCHON features Schon on guitar, Omar Hakim on drums, Rachel Z Hakim on keyboards and Jerry Brooks on bass. NEAL “VORTEX” SCHON will perform selections from Schon’s brand new, all-instrumental 2-CD album, Vortex, released June 23 through the Mascot Label Group. The albumfeaturing Neal Schon on guitars and bass, drummer Steve Smith, GRAMMY-winning keyboardist Jan Hammer, and keyboardist Igor Len - utilizes rock as its foundation, and embraces elements of jazz, classical and world music in an 18-track, sonically explosive collection of original compositions.  The music of Vortex came to life at Berkeley’s Fantasy Studios, Schon’s preferred spot for recording since Journey cut the 10-times-platinum number-one album Escape there in 1981.

Blazing hotter than ever with the lineup of founder Neal Schon (lead guitar and backing vocals), Jonathan Cain (keyboards and backing vocals), co-founder Ross Valory (bass and backing vocals), and lead vocalist Arnel Pineda (who was discovered by Schon), Journey has created some of the best-known songs in rock, such as “Wheel In The Sky,” “Separate Ways,” and “Faithfully.”  Neal Schon recruited Omar Hakim to play drums for Journey’s recent Hollywood Bowl Opening Night concert, the band’s July 4th performance in Provo, Utah, and the Canadian tour.

The Hollywood Bowl, one of the most iconic concert venues in the world, launched its 94th season with its 2015 Opening Night Concert featuring JOURNEY who performed with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA), on June 20. The Bowl’s opening night is traditionally a fundraiser for the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s many education and community programs, which serve more than 150,000 youth, families and teachers every year, and this year it raised a record $1.6 million; the previous best was $1.4 million in 2011.
Following the Hollywood Bowl opener, and Hakim’s debut with Journey, Neal Schon stated, “I'm very happy I was able to bring Omar Hakim in to help us pull together a very elaborate and complex show at the last minute. It was a nearly impossible feat, and tall order for anyone, but with Omar’s musical integrity and talent, we pulled it off and had a blast! Glad to know I've still got the ears and now I'm 2 for 2: first was finding Arnel and now, recruiting Omar Hakim.”

Over the years JOURNEY has earned multiple accolades, including 19 Top 40 singles; producing 25 Gold and Platinum albums; and receiving a Diamond certification for its Greatest Hits album, marking U.S. sales in excess of 15 million. In 2011, they drew nearly a million fans to their Eclipse World Tour and was awarded the prestigious "Legend Of Live Award" at the Billboard Touring Awards in honor of their significant and lasting contributions to live music and the touring business, and in acknowledgement of their commitment to the fans and the art of performing live.

The group’s seminal anthem - “Don’t Stop Believin’” - is the top-selling digital catalog track inhistory, after being featured in the last scene of the electrifying series finale of HBO's ‘The Sopranos’  and then reaching another level of stratospheric success when it was covered by the cast of FOX's wildly successful series ‘Glee.’  Three decades after its original release, "Don't Stop Believin'” has reached a new generation of young fans welcoming this legendary band as it continues to bring its signature sound of classic hits around the world.

The intensely creative guitar giant, Neal Schon, has always had an innate ability to make glorious music. He began playing at age five and was inspired by soul vocalists like Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight, and blues and jazz guitarists ranging from B.B. King Albert King, and Eric Clapton to Wes Montgomery. When Schon was just 15 years old, Carlos Santana invited him to join his band. Schon’s recording debut was on the classic 1971 album Santana III. He played the solo on the LP’s hit single,“Everybody’s Everything.” Recently Schon  completed the album Santana IV with Carlos Santana, co-writing songs and playing guitar. Additionally, Journey, co-headlined with Santana on Carlos’ recent homecoming concerts in Mexico.

DEEP PURPLE ANNOUNCE TWO LIVE RELEASES FROM TWO DIFFERENT KIND OF NIGHTS

FROM THE SETTING SUN... (IN WACKEN)
...TO THE RISING SUN (IN TOKYO)

BOTH TO BE RELEASED ON SEPTEMBER 18 ON earMUSIC

WRITTEN BY ROGER GLOVER: One band, two crowds, two countries - a tale of two cities indeeed. From Germany's Wacken Open Air Festival, one of the biggest metal festivals in the world and a city unto itself, to Japan and the stately Nippon Budokan, the most revered venue in Tokyo. Each has its own distinct personality.

Wacken is a success story beyond par, starting out humbly by two friends in a field in rural Germany and becoming one of the best organized and attended metal festivals... ever. We were most impressed by the facilities, security, backstage, camping - in fact the wwhole production was superb.

As was the crowd, an awesome sight from the stage, generating a palpable sense of occasion. In the sunset, we were treated to a great welcome from the sea of tattoos and black leather facing us.

Festival crowds are unique because most people are there for the occasion itself rather than for any particular band. For us that is always a welcome challenge and a chance to connect with many who may never have seen us before. But the real stars are all in the audience. Thank you, Wacken.

By way of contrast, the Budokan is a temple of peace (except for the infamous occasion when all the seating was destroyed). Made in Japan was partially recorded there and we've played there many times since. For such a large space, the acoustics are excellent; this special building never ceases to impress.

On this particular evening, we came in at the back door, climbed the cool, marble staircase and entered the familiar dressing room. Feeling like we're the only people in the building, it's hard to believe there's even an audience out there.

But there is, young and old, sitting patiently or chatting quietly—the embodiment of civility. It's almost like the respectful hush one might find in a cathedral. But they're here to rock. And rock they do. They may be quiet while they’re waiting, but they are far from shy during the show. They gave us an unforgettable evening. Thank you, Tokyo.

From the Setting Sun... (In Wacken)
hhas been filmed by 9 HD cameras at Wacken Open Air Festival 2013. For the first time in Deep Purple's history, the band will release a 3D version of their performance on Blu-ray, filmed at Wacken.

More dissappointing news for melodic rock fans out of the UK today:

"Hey, rockers!
We hope you're well and are having a good summer so far.

Following months of careful consideration, we would like to announce that we have collectively decided to place Night by Night on an extended hiatus.
We thank you for all your endless and passionate support over the past 8 years; we've had unforgettable experiences, travelled to wonderful places, made countless friends and achieved things we all dreamed of. Now, for the foreseeable future, we will be exploring different avenues.

We are incredibly proud of the album, 'NxN', and have you to thank for driving and encouraging us to achieve it. The feedback we have had from all over the world has been overwhelming. That our music has had such a positive impact on people is a huge deal for us and is exactly what we set out to do in the beginning.
Thank you again for all your passion for NxN, it’s been a pleasure, an honour and an absolute blast throughout!

2015

News Feed

The following four new Rock Candy titles are available now from www.rockcandyrecords.com for a discounted price including postage to anywhere in the world for the next two weeks ending on July 5.

MR. MISTER 'WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD' CANDY270

ALTHOUGH MR MISTER achieved colossal commercial success there has always been a vast under appreciation of their musical worth. Unfairly viewed by many as a faceless mid 80's pop rock band, they eventually scored two worldwide hit singles, their sound showcasing technical ability far beyond the level of musical proficiency normally expected. Indeed, there is an argument that elevates Mr Mister into that rarefied breed of highly respected AOR acts such as Toto, Chicago and Steely Dan.

Based in Los Angeles, the band was originally formed by Steve George and Richard Page (later adding 'ber drummer Pat Mastelotto and guitarist Steve Farris).  Page and George initially recorded unsuccessfully as Pages before changing members and switching their name to Mr Mister, they were then signed to RCA Records by Paul Atkinson, a former member of revered British psychedelic outfit the Zombies. 'Welcome To The Real World', was the band's second album and saw them facing a make or break situation. Fortunately it was a happy ending, with the album producing two #1 hit singles, in 'Broken Wings' and 'Kyrie', and going on to sell in excess of two million copies.

Co-produced by former Yes soundman Paul De Villiers, the album showcases a collection of highly polished tracks, fusing lyrics, melody and showmanship into one glorious clutch of tracks that actually owe as much to progressive rock as they do to catchy pop.

Special Deluxe Collector's Edition, fully remastered sound, Six Bonus Tracks, 16 page full colour booklet, new interviews, 3,500 word essay, enhanced artwork and rare photos.

TRACK LISTING: 1. Black/White 2. Uniform Of Youth 3. Don't Slow Down 4. Run To Her 5. Into My Own Hands 6. Is It Love 7. Kyrie 8. Broken Wings 9. Tangent Tears 10. Welcome To The Real World. BONUS TRACKS: 11. Kyrie' (Extended Version) 12. Broken Wings (Live) 13. Uniform Of Youth (Live) 14. Is It Love' (Dance Mix) 15. Is It Love (Dub Mix) 16. Broken Wings (Extended Version)

MR. MISTER 'GO ON...' CANDY271

WHEN MR MISTER'S 'Welcome To The Real World' album eventually became a huge international seller, producing two massive hit singles in 'Kyrie' and 'Broken Wings', the music business hailed them as all conquering heroes destined to take their place in the rock 'n' roll hall of fame. So much attention was focussed on this their follow-up album, the meticulously crafted 'Go On...', with many eyes and ears confidently predicting another massive success story. Sadly, however, that was not to be.

'Go On...' suffered at the hands of a record company corporate reshuffle, one that saw it change hands and clean out its long time staff. RCA had been sold to German media group BMG who set in motion a restructuring of the company, a place where Mr Mister's new music was not appreciated. It was a disappointing state of affairs as the band had poured their heart and soul into crafting an album that, in many respects, displayed a far more confident and courageous sound.... but one that BMG were not sold on.

Utilising producer Kevin Killen, who had previously crafted records by U2 and Peter Gabriel, 'Go On...' elevates the band to another creative level. The sound is perfectly pristine, boasting a brace of superb songs (including the all time great 'Stand And Deliver') wrapped up in a progressive pop sheen that, even to this day, makes it entirely unfathomable as to why the record label failed to see its potential.

Special Deluxe Collector's Edition, fully remastered sound, Four Bonus Tracks, 16 page full colour booklet, new interviews, 3,500 word essay, enhanced artwork and rare photos.

TRACK LISTING: 1. Stand And Deliver 2. Healing Waters 3. Dust 4. Something Real (Inside Me / Inside You) 5. The Tube 6. Control 7. Watching The World 8. Power Over Me 9. Man Of A Thousand Dances 10. The Border. BONUS TRACKS: 11. Healing Waters (Remix) 12. Bare My Soul (B-Side) 13. Something Real (Inside Me/Inside You) (Rock Dance Mix) 14. Stand And Deliver (Remix)

ENUFF Z'NUFF 'S/T' CANDY254

IF EVER THERE was a band that ought to have made the big time it was Enuff Z'Nuff. They had it all; songs, musicianship, looks, hooks, and a major record label itching to knock the ball right out of the park. The only thing they didn't have on their side was luck. Despite almost universal predictions that EZN would romp home to victory, fortune dictated otherwise leaving them stranded in a rapidly changing musical landscape.

Formed near the sprawling metropolis of Chicago during the mid eighties, this four man outfit featured two central characters, in songwriters Donnie Vie and Chip Z'Nuff. Brothers in all but name, they were f'ted as the Lennon and McCartney of the hard rock scene. Signed to Atco Records in a whirl of activity, the band recorded this, their groundbreaking debut album on home turf crafting one of the best albums of the era. A record so good, that even hard nosed rock critics for Rolling Stone magazine hailed it as a sensation.

Musically the band mined a luxurious fusion of melodic hard rock and pure sixties pop. It was as if Cheap Trick had joined forces with Bon Jovi. Tracks such as 'New Thing', 'Kiss The Clown' and the epic 'In The Groove' took a tired format and utterly reinvented the format. The ballad 'Fly High Michelle' is a masterpiece of psychedelic power pop, the icing on one of the greatest albums of all time.

Special Deluxe Collector's Edition, fully remastered sound, Two Bonus Tracks, 16 page full colour booklet, new interview, 3,500 word essay, enhanced artwork and rare photos.

TRACK LISTING: 1. NEW THING 2. SHE WANTS MORE 3. FLY HIGH MICHELLE 4. HOT LITTLE SUMMER GIRL 5. IN THE GROOVE 6. LITTLE INDIAN ANGEL 7. FOR NOW 8. KISS THE CLOWN 9. I COULD NEVER BE WITHOUT YOU 10. FINGER ON THE TRIGGER. BONUS TRACKS: 11. FLY HIGH MICHELLE (Live) 12. NEW THING (Live)

ENUFF Z'NUFF 'STRENGTH' CANDY255

CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED and held in the highest of esteem by both fellow musicians and critics alike, Chicago hopefuls Enuff Z'Nuff confounded expectations by falling short of commercial success. Their debut album had set tongues wagging with huge benefits predicted but, through no fault of their own, fast-track acceleration was curtailed by a number of set-backs. For many, it could have been a devastating blow but for EZN it just meant they would have to work harder next time around.

'Strength', the band's eagerly expected sophomore album, was yet another astounding piece of work. Recorded in 1991, the band threw everything and the kitchen sink into their songs, producing a record that, for many, actually eclipsed their f'ted debut. It was an album that showed maturity and depth, without losing the essence of their sound; a compelling mash-up of the Bon Jovi and Cheap Trick. All fifteen songs show a band in song writing heaven, driven to extraordinary highs by Donnie Vie's sensational and plaintiff voice.

Captured in the prime of creativity, their energy and inventiveness knowing no bounds, songs such as 'Heaven Or Hell', 'Holly Wood Ya' and 'Baby Loves You' continues the pop-rock theme from their debut album, but it's deeper, perhaps darker, tracks like 'Mother's Eyes' and the title track that indicate their real genius. Hamstrung by grunge and torpedoed by corporate machinations, 'Strength' failed to connect commercially but it's one of the most compelling albums you'll ever hear.

Special Deluxe Collector's Edition, fully remastered sound, Two Bonus Tracks, 16 page full colour booklet, new interview, 3,500 word essay, enhanced artwork and rare photos.

TRACK LISTING: 1. HEAVEN OR HELL 2. MISSING YOU 3. STRENGTH 4. IN CROWD 5. HOLLY WOOD YA 6. THE WORLD IS A GUTTER 7. GOODBYE 8. LONG WAY TO GO 9. MOTHER'S EYES 10.  BABY LOVES YOU 11. BLUE ISLAND 12. THE WAY HOME/COMING HOME 13. SOMETHING FOR FREE 14. TIME TO LET YOU GO. BONUS TRACKS: 15. KITTY 16. LET IT GO

Guitarist VIVIAN CAMPBELL Avoids Radiation Therapy, Will Rejoin DEF LEPPARD

Artist:
Release Year:
2015
Categories:

Over the weekend DEF LEPPARD guitarist VIVIAN CAMPBELL stated that his cancer had returned and he would be standing aside to recieve treatment. Today Vivian has just posted the great news that he will be able to rejoin the band's tour this weekend.

From Viv: "So, so happy to report that I've dodged the bullet of radiation. I was due to start a course that would have sidelined me for most of the first leg of the US tour, but my brilliant doctors have steered me towards an alternative course of treatment that will enable me to rejoin the tour this Saturday night in Birmingham Alabama. Furthermore, they've tailored future treatments to accommodate the tour schedule so I won't have to miss any more shows. I'm so happy and so indebted to the wonderful physicians who have worked so hard on my behalf to make this happen. See you Saturday!"

Vivian's past 2 updates:

"I'm overwhelmed by the support and well-wishes that everyone has sent to me. Thank you all so very much - it means a lot to me."

"I'm saddened by the fact that my cancer has returned. However, I'm beyond consolation that it's return will prevent me from being able to do my job for a while. I’m still working on a schedule of treatment with my doctors, but I will see you all very soon. My apologies."

GET WELL SOON VIVIAN!

VAN HALEN Once United

Artist:
Release Year:
2015

I was going to sum up the last few days in the tumpultous world of Van Halen, but then I got this newsellter from Van Halen Rising author Greg Renoff. Makes for a good short summary and a nice diversion:

"The past week has been a tumultuous one on Planet Van Halen.

In a brutally frank interview with Billboard, Eddie minimized the contributions of former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony.

His words quickly went viral.

When Sammy then blasted Eddie in defense of Anthony, calling Eddie a liar, it too made headlines around the web.

But earlier in the week, Hagar had lodged another charge against Eddie and Alex Van Halen. Sammy told Eddie Trunk that the brothers had taken legal action to stop Hagar from performing Van Hagar songs when Hagar's band, the Circle, performs on TV.

Are we having fun yet?

All of these events reminded me of story I had to leave out of Van Halen Rising because of space issues. It involves a 1976 legal dispute that saw the four members of Van Halen unified in their efforts to support their band.

It's a good reminder that at one time, Van Halen was a four-man gang with an us-against-the-world mentality."

In 1976, Daniel Sullivan, then just out of college, was a concert promoter in Los Angeles. Back in 1974, he'd gone to Pasadena City College with David Lee Roth and had become friends with him. The following year, he'd put on successful shows featuring Van Halen at LaCañada High School.

To kick off the Bicentennial Year, Sullivan hired Van Halen for $500.00 to play a show on February 27 at Glendale High School.

Early ticket sales were brisk, and Sullivan was sure this would be his biggest gig yet.
Then the city of Glendale came calling.

Photographer Mary Garson, who shot pictures at Sullivan's shows, recalls what happened: "Dan promoted the show, sold tickets, did the contract. He did everything right except get an insurance bond with the city of Glendale. The city wouldn't let him do the show without one. He told me, 'I'm screwed. I've sold several hundred tickets, but the city says I need a $50,000 insurance bond. I don't have the money to pay for it.'"

Sullivan had to cancel the concert.

So he began refunding tickets, and called David Lee Roth to tell him the bad news.

Roth didn't take it well.

Roth told Sullivan, "Hey, well, you still owe us 500 bucks."

Eddie, it turns out, was even more fixated on the fact that Sullivan had signed a contract promising to pay the band $500. Even though the show didn't happen, Eddie still wanted Sullivan to pay. "Eddie was pretty adamant about it," Sullivan told me in 2012. "I said, 'Look, I can't do it. I don't have the money. I’ll do another show for you guys or whatever.'"

Eddie replied, "No, I want the 500 bucks."

When Sullivan said again that he didn't have the money, the band said we'll see you in court.
___

"So they ended up suing me in Small Claims court in Glendale," Sullivan recalls. "I was bummed, especially because even though we were in small claims, we were still friends. It was weird.

"So my Dad and I come in to the courtroom and there’s the band, on the other side of the court, all of them, dressed in suits.

"I swear to God it was the most amazing thing. I was just a kid, and I'm with my Dad, and here's Van Halen on the other side of the court. David Roth represented the band. He said that I broke the contract and didn’t follow through with the contract. In the end, they won a judgment for 500 bucks against me."

But Sullivan never paid. Garson recalls that the judge didn't attach a payment plan schedule to the ruling, so Sullivan just didn't ever settle the claim.
___

More than two years later, Sullivan had lost touch with the band and was living in London. Then one day in the fall of 1978, he got a big surprise: "I'm taking a bus down these streets and I see this sign, a rainbow-colored poster saying Van Halen is playing at the Rainbow Theater."

Sullivan showed up for the show on October 22, 1978. After the gig, he had a roadie bring a note to the band members.

He recalls what happened next.

"David, Alex, and Eddie came out and they were so sweet, especially David. He was like, 'Daaannn! How ahh yah ya mothafucka?' It was just the coolest thing ever. I was probably one of the few people there other than the crew who had seen them on the other side of the Atlantic.

"So the show's over and we're looking for some place to go but everything in London was shutting down for the night. So I went to all these private [after-hours] clubs with them. It was amazing."
