This week on Focus On Metal comes the fourth installment in our Little Mountain Sound Studio series. Our guest this week is none other than bassist and all around cool guy, Tony Franklin. Tony has played with an impressive list of artists including Gary Hoey, Marty Freidman, Ripper Owens, Doug Aldrich, and Whitesnake. Did I mention the guy has also played with Jimmy Page in The Firm? Jimmy Freaking Page! Of course he was also a big part of Blue Murder with John Sykes and Carmine Appice. So yeah, I think this guy knows his way around a studio so he's a perfect guy to talk about his time at LMS. These days when he's not enjoying his Ninja blender Tony is playing with Rated X and Heart of Storm with Doug Aldrich.

In this in-depth interview below, HEART OF STORM's Derek Sherinian [keyboardist]and Gregg Bissonette [drummer], Doug Aldrich [lead guitar] and Tony Franklin [The Firm, Jimmy Page, Paul Rodgers] discuss how the show was born, its evolution from premiering in Europe last year in Mayto kicking off its U.S. debut this Friday and Saturday in Los Angeles and what fans can expect when they come to see this one-of-a-kind rock concert and ballet experience. View the sizzle reel for HEART OF STORM here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqWoMKefKOM.

HEART OF STORM is played live and loud by an all-star band including renowned keyboardist Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater), drummer Gregg Bissonette (Ringo Starr, Electric Light Orchestra), lead guitar Doug Aldrich(Whitesnake, Dio, Revolution Saints), bassist Tony Franklin (The Firm, Jimmy Page, Paul Rodgers) and rhythm guitarist Brent Woods(Warrant, Sebastian Bach) and alto saxophonist  Brandon Fields(Tower Of Power, George Benson). The music that was created needed a strong visual, so the group teamed with the young and talented Russian-Korean choreographer Stas Tsoy. The music, performance, and visuals come together to tell this unforgettable tale of a young Major named Storm as he travels to the depths of the labyrinth of Life, Death and Love.

This hybrid rock concert fused with stunning, young Russian ballet talent--spanning the Bolshoi Theatre, Swan Lake and the Nutcracker--inherits the tradition of classical ballet, while charting new territory into live, emotional theater. HEART OF STORM is an explosive and theatrical rock ballet extravaganza.

Get an in-depth look into HEART OF STORM here:

Q: When did this whole idea for HEART OF STORM evolve from? What sparked it for you?

Derek Sherinian: The creator Alex Semenov approached me in late 2013 to produce and play on a rock instrumental record. Alex decided to have choreographed ballet performing live along with a rock band, he found Stas Tsoy a talented Russian-Korean choreographer and this sounded like an exciting, unique opportunity to me.

Q: What was your vision for this artistically? What message do you guys want to get across? What should people walk away with?

Doug Aldrich: Artistically, I thought this was a cool fusion of arts and I wanted an opportunity to push myself in some new directions after Whitesnake. This was really something interesting and obviously with a great bunch of friends that also happen to be at the top level as musicians. I hope to have people walk away feeling happy to see and hear something fresh that is a new idea.

Derek Sherinian: Heart Of Storm is Alex Semenov's vision. My job is to help him see his vision through on the musical end.

Tony Franklin: Heart Of Storm is part rock show, part Russian ballet--with a killer band, featuring top name rock musicians--and world class Russian ballet. 'Storm' is the main character, and the storyline follows his tumultuous journey of love, anger, jealousy and death. But this is not just a dance show with accompanying rock music. Both the band and ballet are interwoven into a unique, powerful and emotional performance. I've never seen anything like it.

Q: How did the idea of fusing the music with ballet come about? How did you create the songs to fit with the ballet choreography?

Derek Sherinian: The music was written first, and then the dancing was choreographed afterwards.

Doug Aldrich: Music has always been in ballet I guess, but this is a fresh approach that the composer felt would be more intense and fit well with the choreography. It could possibly reach a new audience that might otherwise skip ballet. I myself have never been to a ballet, but now I'm interested. The Red Rock Ballet is made up of very talented young dancers from Russia.

Q: What is the story of HEART OF STORM? Tell us about the production and look of the show.

Tony Franklin: The Orpheum Theater is the perfect setting. In the Broadway Theater District of Los Angeles, it has a long history dating back to the 1920's. The list of artists who've performed here is remarkable, including Judy Garland, the Marx Brothers, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Little Richard, Stevie Wonder--the list goes on. American Idol and America's Got Talent are also filmed here. The Orpheum stage has been transformed to accommodate the unique Heart Of Storm production. The lights, the setting, the sound and performances are all fine-tuned to express the broad array of emotions of the storyline. I'm really excited to be part of Heart Of Storm.

Doug Aldrich: I was so immersed in learning the material that I didn't really know much about the story at first. But once we started to run the show together, it all made sense... The look seems to be heavy....very edgy, but with classic Ballet feel in spots. In other places it probably pushes the limit a bit.

Q: Can you elaborate on the band's chemistry? What's the dynamic like?

Derek Sherinian: Everyone in this band is not only incredible musicians, but incredible people as well. Tony Franklin and Gregg Bissonette are hands down the nicest rhythm section in rock! I am truly blessed to be working with such a great team of people across the board.

Doug Aldrich: Derek is our fearless leader and has put together a very diverse bunch of people to perform the music. I know Derek had been working on this for some time. Then I happened to be in Moscow for a day and I got a phone call from Brent Woods saying that he and Derek were out at a party in town and asked if I wanted to join. Haha. I was asleep and jetlagged so I didn't go, but a few months later Derek started to think about this production and called me to play. I have to say, it's been a huge amount of work for me to get up to speed, but we had so much fun that time has flown by. We are all very different people so it feels unlike any project I've been in. Gregg and Brent secretly coordinated wardrobe the entire time showing up with the same shit and shoes or whatever... Tony is truly one of the nicest people you could ever meet. His playing is just astounding... so giant. Like all the guys I reckon. Brandon has just blown me away...with horns and flutes!!! He has been very patient with us as he has not had to deal with a band this loud. But he seriously shreds if that can be deemed a compliment from me. Derek is that bad boy dude with chops that will back it up. Derek and Brent are serious gearheads which of course I can relate to. Derek has more gear than just about anyone I know.... I get it. There is always more room for something new. Brent plays so awesome. I'm really glad to work with him. He is playing solos as well, but also doing acoustic work which is very important with a ballet. Gregg is joking around all the time... always, but he just an insanely talented player. He like all these guys has played with the best of the best cause they are that good.

Gregg Bissonette: The band chemistry is awesome. I've been a fan of all of these musicians for many years and have played with everyone before except Brent Woods, but now he's my new best friend :). The first day I showed up for rehearsal, I was wearing a red Foo Fighters shirt and black jeans and Brent was wearing a red shirt and black jeans. Everyone commented on it, so each morning we decided to mess with the others by calling ahead of time and wearing the same colors. It took them a while to figure it out and they thought we were on the same wave length, but they quickly caught on :).We all really take the music seriously, as a drummer in the band you have two man jobs: the tempo, and controlling the dynamics... bringing it way down and way up when you need to. Brandon is one of the world's greatest sax players and I've played with him at the Baked Potato Jazz club in L.A., on his solo albums, and we were in the house band for the Latin Grammys a few years ago. I was in a band with Derek called Jughead which my brother Matt Bissonette (Elton John's bassist) and Ty Tabor (Kings X) were also in. Derek and I also played in Italy with Yngwie Malmsteen and Deep Purple, that's where I played with Doug Aldrich as well. Tony Franklin and I have played a ton together over the years and have been great pals for 20 years. We played years ago on a movie called Endless Summer 2. It was a surf movie. We've done a million albums together and toured all over the world. Derek is the glue that brought us all together. He is a great guy, a fantastic musician, and a wonderful producer and band leader. The music we are playing with Heart of Storm is written so well that it lends itself to having a lot of dynamics, (playing at different musical volume levels). It's very passionate music and when everyone sees the dancers and storyline, they will love it and see that it's all brilliantly connected.

Angus Young, Brian Johnson Recall AC/DC's Resurrection 'Back In Black'

Artist:
Release Year:
2015

Podcasts & Radio

Dallas, TX - July 21, 2015.  North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands celebrates the 35th anniversary of the second biggest-selling album in the world, AC/DC's Back In Black.

After four U.S. albums, AC/DC had finally gained a foothold in America with the breakout album Highway to Hell. But just when success was within their grasp, lead singer and co-writer Bon Scott died after a hard night of drinking. For most bands, losing a singer and frontman is a fatal blow, but not for AC/DC.

Following Bon's funeral in Australia, Malcolm and Angus Young returned to the UK to work through their grief the only way they knew how, writing music. Angus Young tells InTheStudio host Redbeard just how serious the band took their situation.

'We sat down and we said, 'This has got to be good. It HAS to be good'... If it had been the last thing we had done as a band, it had to be something.'  - Angus Young

Something, it was. At the time no one, not even the band could have imagined the heights to which AC/DC Back In Black would climb, going on to sell over 48 million records worldwide, the Mt. Everest of Rock (second only to Michael Jackson's Thriller ). Back in Black   became an album full of Rock and Roll anthems like 'Hells Bells', 'You Shook Me All Night Long', 'What Do You Do For Money Honey', 'Shoot To Thrill', 'Have A Drink On Me', 'Rock'N'Roll Ain't Noise Pollution', and of course the title cut 'Back In Black'.

InTheStudio host Redbeard speaks candidly with Angus Young and Brian Johnson about the Back In Black period, including the death of Bon Scott, the hiring of Brian Johnson, the adventures of recording in the Bahamas, to their first gig ever with Brian in Belgium.

The AC/DC story would not be complete without a tribute to band patriarch Malcolm Young, who is on medical leave but continues to inspire.

'He's a sort of heart and soul behind the band. He lives and breathes it, and he's so important to all of us as a father figure. I can't say too much about the guy.'   - Brian Johnson

AOR Heaven August 28 Releases Announced: NEWMAN & ART NATION

Artist:
Friday, August 28, 2015

News Feed

AOR Heaven’s upcoming August 28 releases are announced - NEWMAN & ART NATION.

Band: Art Nation - Revolution
Release date: 28.08.2015
Label: AOR Heaven

Swedish rock band Art Nation release their highly anticipated debut album “Revolution”. Playing concerts throughout the year, while recording the album simultaneously, shows that the band is truly ”going all in”.
Art Nation was formed 2013 in Gothenburg, Sweden, after lead singer Alexander Strandell’s departure from his former band Diamond Dawn. Strandell, already well known for his strong voice and energetic stage presence, decided to raise the bar, and gathered some of the best musicians available, bassist Simon Gudmundsson being the first, shortly followed by Theodor Hedström and Christoffer Borg.

An acoustic single, ”Moving On”, was recorded, followed by power ballad ”One Is Better Than No One”, which also featured a music video and was released in collaboration with humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières), who named the song Official Charity Song of 2014, and all money generated from it was, and still is, donated directly to the organization. ”One Is Better Than No One” was also the starting point of the band’s collaboration with producer and engineer Jakob Herrmann (Raised Fist, Hardcore Superstar, Engel, etc).
Art Nation spent the rest of 2014 playing shows, as well as guesting national TV and radio shows, further building their fan base and reputation. The band got its final line-up when adding second guitarist Johan Gustavsson, together with drummer Carl Tudén, who was recruited just after winning the Swedish Drum Championships.

In early 2015, Art Nation signed a deal with German label AOR Heaven for their full-length debut album, titled “Revolution”. The record was produced and recorded by Jakob Herrmann at Top Floor Studios, together with Christoffer Borg. “Revolution” consists of 12 songs, one being a completely remade version of their first single ”Moving On”. It also features the stripped down piano ballad ”Look To The Sky”, performed in one single take by Strandell and keyboardist Theodor Hedström. The album was mixed and mastered at Hansen Studios in Denmark by renowned mixing engineer Jacob Hansen (Amaranthe, Engel, Volbeat, etc) and Christoffer Borg and co-produced by Art Nation.

Line-up: Alexander Strandell - Vocals, Christoffer Borg - Guitar, Johan Gustavsson - Guitar, Simon Gudmundsson - Bass, Theodor Hedström -  Keyboards, Carl Tudén - Drums
Tracklist: 1. Need You To Understand, 2. 3000 Beats, 3. I want Out, 4. Number One, 5. Don’t Wait For Salvation, 6. All The Way, 7. Start A Fire, 8. Moving On, 9. Here I Am, 10. Look To The Sky, 11. Wage War Against The World, 12. All In

Band: Newman - The Elegance Machine
Release date: 28.08.2015
Label: AOR Heaven

In 1997 Singer, songwriter Steve Newman formed the band Newman and since 1998 have been producing consistently high quality albums filled with hook laden songs and thought provoking lyrics. The now, hard to find self-titled album was followed up in 1999 by the awesome "One Step Closer" album. Continuing the high standard came "Dance In The Fire" and then "Sign Of The Modern Times" in 2000, and 2003 respectfully. Fans and critics alike began to realize they were dealing with an artist that would evolve and mature with them.

The year 2006 saw the release of "Heaven Knows", and once again proved beyond all doubt that Newman were becoming one of the top purveyors of Melodic Rock in the UK. Later in 2006 Steve Newman broke away from his former label to form "Chrome Dome", an independent label set up for the purpose of continuing to release the Newman product. Any doubts about the quality or consistency were cast aside when in 2007 "Primitive Soul" was released to great acclaim. This was followed in 2008 by "Decade" a double album celebrating 10 years of Newman. However, not wanting to take the usual route of a "hits" album this was packaged with a second CD containing another 14 unreleased songs which ended up being so well received it was reviewed as a new studio album. "Decade" may have been a great way for a band to sign off and call it a day, however, not only was this not even considered, the focus went into producing the next stage of the bands career.

In 2010 "The Art Of Balance" was released to huge acclaim from critics and fans. The band followed this up with a string of successful live dates including Cambridge Rock Festival, Firefest Festival, and a UK Tour supporting John Waite. All this was achieved in the face of huge emotional strain after Steve suffered losing both his parents that year. In fact, as the writing progressed onto the following recording "Under Southern Skies" this AOR Heaven release ended up being a very personal and reflective album for Steve.
All this time , the live band, with the addition of Pete Newdeck on Drums, joining Steve (Vocals, Guitar), Shaun Bessant (Guitar, Vocals), Paul Boyle (Keyboards, Vocals), Dave Bartlett (Bass, Vocals) were gaining momentum, culiminating in shows in Greece, Spain, Germany, and the US.

2014 saw the re-recording and release of the acclaimed first album as a Limited Edition, This coincided with a successful UK tour with Vega.
Now, the legacy continues with the brand new release "The Elegance Machine", the culmination of songs written over the past two years and an album that once again encompasses what Newman stand for. The powerful guitars are present, as is the strong songwriting and huge melodies. But this time it also brings in modern influences such as on the title track "The Elegance Machine" and "Halo" giving the recognizable and reliable Newman sound a more contemporary edge. A natural follow up to "Siren" the album delivers a harder edge than its predecessor, but without losing the emphasis on strong hooks. Steve has always been known for his thought-provoking lyrics, and "The Elegance Machine" is no exception with subject matter ranging from corporate business greed (The Suit), through domestic violence (She Walks In Silence), and even onto the space themed (Prayer For Apollo).

Once again Steve has teamed up with Rob McEwen (drummer for the last 8 Newman albums), and has also brought in the talents of Geoff Wootton backing vocals on "The Suit", "One Good Reason" "Halo", and Mark Thompson-Smith (Praying Mantis, Big Life) backing vocals on "Illuminate", "Send Us Salvation" and "Pretender Surrender".

Produced By Steve Newman;  All songs written by Steve Newman except: "Halo" written by Steve Newman and Paul Boyle.

Tracklist: 1. The Suit (Skyscraper), 2. The Elegance Machine, 3. Don’t Stay Lonely, 4. Illuminate, 5. Confess, 6. Halo, 7. Prayer For Apollo, 8. She Walks In Silence, 9. One Good Reason, 10. Pretender Surrender, 11. Send Us Salvation, 12. Scars

Line-up on this album: Steve Newman: Vocals, Guitar, and Keyboards; Rob McEwen: Drums & Percussion; Geoff Wootton: Backing Vocals on “The Suit (Skyscraper)”, "One Good Reason" and "Halo"; Mark Thompson-Smith: Backing Vocals on "Illuminate", "Send Us Salvation" and "Pretender Surrender"

MelodicRock Records is super excited and very proud to announce the next chapter for melodic rock band THE RADIO SUN.

The acclaimed Aussie band will release their sophomore record Heaven Or Heartbreak via MRR September 25.

We are pleased to publish the terrific cover art, once again done by the great Carl Blekkmarkhttps://www.facebook.com/blekkmark

Stay tuned for album details and your first audio preview!

Once again, THE RADIO SUN have teamed with the great Paul Laine, who mixed the new album as well as co-writing three tracks and adding a special guest lead vocal on a song ‘Science Fiction Make Believe’.

Guitarist Stevie Janevski states enthusiastically; “The Heaven Or Heartbreak album title stands for our belief in melodic heavy rock. It’s our ‘heaven!’ We’ve grown as a band – and it would be our ‘heartbreak’ if this new album doesn’t extend our fanbase. All of us spent a lot of time on writing the songs and really believe it’s a good album with no fillers. We’re all really looking forward to getting out there and touring the album in as many parts of the world as possible”.

The Radio Sun debut album ‘Wrong Things Right’ was a top seller for MelodicRock Records and was well received by the press & public worldwide with favourable reviews in major scribes such as Classic Rock, Powerplay, Fireworks and Burrn! amongst others.

Two appearances at MelodicRockFest 3 & 4 in Chicago U.S.A. helped showcase The Radio Sun’s live experience with notable first class four part vocal harmonies (a standout on the new album) which impressed so much that Paul Laine asked the band to be his backing band for live shows in America and in Australia.

Heaven Or Heartbreak will be released in September in conjunction with Cargo Records UK and will also be available as a limited Special Edition direct from MelodicRock.com

The Special Edition bonus to include the band covering a few very special and much loved AOR classics!

BON JOVI Prepares 'Burning Bridges' Release To Close Out Sambora Era

Artist:
Friday, August 21, 2015
Categories:
News Feed

Ok, so here’s the Billboard BON JOVI article – so far the only official source of news for this newly announced Burning Bridges release.

Bon Jovi is releasing a special fan album leading up to its overseas fall tour, Billboard has learned.

The band is releasing two new tracks not even one month before the Aug. 21 release of their new album, Burning Bridges.

A spokesperson for Bon Jovi tells Billboard: “Burning Bridges, which will be released August 21st, is an album for fans and will accompany an upcoming international tour. The band is hard at work on their next album, which will see a full-scale release in 2016.”

The first track -- “We Don’t Run” -- is written by Jon Bon Jovi and Grammy-winning producer John Shanks. An anthem in the Bon Jovi tradition, the tune features meaty production and a shredding guitar solo by Shanks. Shanks has a long history with the band, having produced What About Now, The Circle, Lost Highway and Have a Nice Day.

The song leads off with a driving  drum beat and a chain-gang chorus before Bon Jovi gets down to business with a gritty vocal throwing down the gauntlet as he sings, “Not afraid of burning bridges/ 'Cause I know they’re gonna light my way/ Like a phoenix from the ashes/ Welcome to the future, it’s a new day!”

The second -- "Saturday Night Gave Me Sunday Morning" -- is a happier, more romantic, bright pop song with a hooky chorus featuring the lyrics “Saturday night gave me Sunday morning/ Opened my eyes and it’s a new day dawning/ Think I might have pushed my luck a time or two/ Everything about us is what gets me through.” It's classic Bon Jovi and sure to inspire a big sing-along on the road.

Credited to Jon Bon Jovi, John Shanks and former guitarist Richie Sambora, the song -- released internationally on July 16 -- was written previous to Sambora’s departure from the group.

While the band's live dates kick off overseas on Sept. 11, fans can catch keyboardist David Bryan in a solo headlining spot Aug. 29 at the  Rock the Farm event at Regan's Hollow Farm in Farmingdale, New Jersey.

So what’s behind this album?

What I’m hearing is conflicting information. I’m told it is an album of unreleased studio tracks from the last 2 albums. That part seems confirmed.

But that would therefore suggest that Richie Sambora will be part of the performances on the album. But one source suggests that Richie’s parts might have been taken out and replaced, as he would have to grant permission for his parts to be used. Whether that has occurred is unknown (but unlikely given the animosity between Sambora and band boss Jon Bon Jovi).

Only the two tracks mentioned in the Billboard article are brand new.

The album’s title is a not so subtle dig at line-up changes within the band, but is it Jon suggesting Richie has burned bridges by leaving the band, or is it Jon declaring that this album represents the last of the Samboa era and it is therefore he who is burning that bridge and moving on?

Bon Jovi are heading to Asia for a short tour starting September 11.

Meanwhile, check out the new single from Nickelback Bon Jovi:

Stay tuned for more details.

SOLD OUT!!!

The MRF4 USB is here!

To commemorate the last MRF, held in Chicago @ The Home Bar October 2014, amateur filming of the entire event was undertaken by a few select dedicated rockers.

The footage was then edited over the last couple of months. The entire event (including the acoustic sets) was filmed – a couple of sets with a single camera, but mostly with 4, 5 and 6 camera angles, beautifully compiled to present a brilliant presentation that is simply too good to leave in the vaults.

So with the generous cooperation of the artists involved over the weekend, I am very excited to present the second MRF USB, featuring many of the awesome performances – many as full sets and some others as highlights.
There were a couple of sets where audio or video wasn’t up to scratch so unfortunately, they are not available.

What is on this drive adds up to nearly 15 hours of MRF Live Footage!

And because of the large volume of material and delivering the live sets in the best audio and video quality possible, we are jumping to a huge 64G drive. Yes, 64 Gig of MRF footage and bonus material.

INTERVIEWS WITH KK DOWNING (EX-JUDAS PRIEST), HOUSE OF LORDS, SPACEY T (SOUND BARRIER, PRAISE THE DEAD),  SYMPHONY X AND DEATH ANGEL ON RICH DAVENPORT'S ROCK SHOW

Rich Davenport's Rock Show this week features interviews with Judas Priest legend KK Downing, James Christian (House of Lords), Tracey 'Spacey T' Singleton (Praise The Dead, ex Sound Barrier, Fishbone), Symphony X's Michael Romeo and Ted Aguilar from Death Angel, and is now available for streaming at this link:

https://www.mixcloud.com/richdav1/rich-davenports-rock-show-kk-downing-house-of-lords-spacey-t-symphony-xdeath-angel-interviews/

In the first hour, legendary former Judas Priest guitarist KK Downing drops in to discuss his new range of fragrances for Rockers, Metal for Men and Metal for Women. KK also talks about some of the reasons he chose to leave Priest, and looks at the way in which the classic Priest axe team he formed with Glenn Tipton worked to stay on the cutting edge of lead guitar playing. KK also chooses two of his favourite Priest classics.

Also in part 1, House of Lords vocalist James Christian looks at the band's stellar new album 'Indestructible', their tenth to date, released as the current line up celebrates its tenth anniversary. You'll also hear two new tracks chosen by James.

The second hour kicks off with a chat with renowned guitar hero Tracey 'Spacey T' Singleton, formerly of Sound Barrier, Fishbone, and Mother's Finest, and now playing 8-string guitar with Praise The Dead, a power duo whose sound is simultaneously melodic and crushingly heavy. The band has just released 'The Heavy', the first of 3 EPs, and Tracey gives the low down on this exciting new project. Tracey also pays tribute to Phil Lynott, revealing that Sound Barrier approached the Lizzy legend's management to ask him to produce an album for them. You'll also hear Sound Barrier's cover of Thin Lizzy's 'Hollywood (Down On Your Luck)', and Tracey's choice of another Lizzy gem.

Rounding off the show are interviews with Michael Romeo, guitarist with Prog Metal masters Symphony X, who looks at their forthcoming new album 'Underworld', and Ted Aguilar, rhythm guitarist with classic Thrashers Death Angel. Ted discusses their new CD/DVD package which features a live album, 'The Bay Calls For Blood', and 'Thrashumentary', a career-spanning retrospective documentary.

The show closes with two tracks from Bob Seger's latest album 'Ride Out'.

The GuitarCast - TOM KEIFER

Guitarist and singer Tom Keifer of Cinderella fame sat down with Shawn and Corbs from The GuitCast to talk about his latest album; The Way Life Goes.  In this, all cards on the table interview, we get an all access, backstage pass to Tom's writing process, country influences, experience with producers and session musicians, personal views on Spotify, and his vintage gear arsenal.

Tom Keifer speaks openly with The GuitCast about 'The Way Life Goes'.  When asked about the writing process, his reply spoke volumes; “I always try to draw on new inspirations and those things can come to you at anytime.  Usually it’s when you are not trying, a lot of times it’s when you are traveling.  Long drives can spark ideas, a lot of times on planes; for some reason that feeling of movement can open up a hypnotic state and you start to get ideas.  That’s usually how a song starts for me.”  Tom goes on to speak about his filtration process and how he doesn’t really even start to take notes or work on an idea until it has stuck with him for a time.  “If that initial spark or idea goes away then I just figure it wasn’t interesting or memorable”.

The no rush, let it happen, spirit proves to be a winning formula for a successful album.  Even if it was 10 years in the making, the best things in life are well worth the wait.  Be sure to check out the whole interview on The GuitCast to get the full scoop on this great record, a bit of Tom’s gear, and more things Tom Keifer.

In episode 123 of One On One With Mitch Lafon, Mitch is joined by RUDOLF SCHENKER of the SCORPIONS.

Rudolf discusses the band's latest album RETURN TO FOREVER, their 50th anniversary tour, the Scorpions rockumentary FOREVER AND A DAY, Uli Jon Roth, the Tokyo Tapes and Taken By Force albums, his brother Michael, thoughts of leaving the band in the last 50 years, drummer James Kottak, and much more.

Quotes from the interview: "This band is not a band made by a manager. There was a new generation coming from Germany - not with tanks and making war, but with guitars and playing music. Bringing Music, Love & Peace. [the Scorpions] are Love, Peace & Rock N' Roll - Love stands for Still Lovin' You, Peace for Winds Of Change, and Rock N' Roll for Rock You Like A Hurricane."

On his brother Michael: "My brother was perfect for the Scorpions, but two Schenkers in one band are too much."

This episode is co-hosted by BRITNY FOX & DORO drummer, Johnny Dee. Johnny also gives an updateon the Britny Fox reunion and new album.

Swedish rockers Degreed are one of my favourite “New Swedish Revolution” bands; one of several artists in Scandinavia that are pushing updated modern melodic rock sounds – classic melodies for a new era - the likes of HEAT, Eclipse, Work Of Art and The Poodles for example.

Degreed are also close to my heart as I released their debut album Life, Love, Loss on MRR in 2009. The second album We Don’t Belong was another outstanding slice of memorable songs that saw the guys modernize a little further, while easing up on the harder edge of their sound. Those are two really amazing albums that simply exhume class, melody and style.

Now Dead But Not Forgotten fulfills the trilogy. This is the band’s Slippery When Wet; their Pyromania. This is simply an astonishingly good album that sees the guys excel in every single department – songwriting, performance, vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards and production – what can I say about production? Perfection! Balanced mix, clear instruments, powerful, easy to play at any volume. Absolute perfection.
Drummer Mats Ericsson is the man in control for the first time. He knows the songs and the sound intimately of course, but it is the sheer precision in which the album has been mixed and the performances captured that goes way beyond that a self-produced album normally sounds like.
If this rock star drummer lark doesn’t work out for Mats, then he has a long career as a producer and mix engineer ahead of him.
Robin Eriksson screams louder and wails with more passion than ever before, Micke Jansson is a revelation on keyboards this time around and Daniel Johansson now ranks as one of my favourite guitar players.

Simply put – there’s something on this album for everyone. Power, melody, classic and new sounds, anthems, harmonies, waiting guitars and lush keyboards. Quite extraordinary really.
I could go on and on, but let’s just cut straight to the music. And we have 14, yes 14 tracks and not one single minute of filler among them.
There is massive diversity, yet complete cohesion. That’s another credit to the band. And I’ve honestly had a really hard time reviewing anything lately as all I can play is this album.

The Scam – a 4 minute blast of angst and energy. Starts with a controlled melody before turning metal with some blinding vocals. A terrific guitar solo and a bombastic ‘live in concert’ ending.
Face The Fact – classic Degreed…modern and commercial, yet 80s keyboards swirling around in the background and a massive chorus. Should be on radio. Today.
Madness – darker and moodier, yet faster and even more melodic. A building melody rises to a dramatic chorus.
Shame On Me – once again, 80s keyboards filter through the song, from the opening sequence to the constant layer of melody under the thumping bass. The mid-song left turn into a short burst of modern aggressive metal and a blazing guitar solo just adds to the brilliance.
Better Safe Than Sorry – is simply a Song Of The Year contender with big harmonies, big everything. One of those album tracks you always look forward to hearing, despite loving all the tracks around it. A big melodic rocker that continues the frenetic pace of this album.
Love Me, Love Me Not – this little ditty is another true winner. One from the Degreed “mood” handbook with a pure FM radio commercial hook and fist pumping moody chorues.
Drama – great vocal into and those keyboards in play again. Verse to bridge to chorus…one hook after another.

Kill Your Darlings – in your face hard rocking attitude. Old meets new once again on this beefed up rocker, powered by riffs and rhythm. The bass and drum performance and indeed, the way the rhythm section are captured in the studio is another strong suit of this album.
Touch Of Paradise – hands in the air singalong melodic bliss on this anthemic, rocking AOR masterpiece with a chorus so utterly infectious, it should come with a health warning.
Forgive You – heavy. Then not. Then heavy, fast and furious. Then not! Then start over again. Another big favourite from this collection of favourites. This chorus is amazing.
Start Again – darker, heavier, keyboards everywhere, guitars everywhere.
Firefly – holy smoking melodic anthems Batman! How can a song this good, be relegated to track 12?!!! When 1-11 are as good as they are on this album, that’s how. But this is just another track to look forward to every time. This modern commercial rock that should be all over radio everywhere. Kids in their 1000s should be lining up to buy this.
Final Ride – fast and furious again and keyboard swirls mixing it up with choppy guitar riffs and punchy drum beats. And a great chorus of course!
Turn Around, Don’t Back Down – surely a ballad to close out this 14 track tour de force? After 13 rockers, this has to be a calm way to close the album? No way! While the first part might hint at something mellower, the chorus and remaining song put that to rest. A powerful melodic closer with a passionate vocal that draws to an end what can only be rated as a perfect album.

And that folks, is how you create a melodic rock album in 2015. One that has commercial appeal, modern writing and production, yet remains as melodic and keyboard fused as anything from the glory days.
There is always going to be comments here and there about someone “not getting” this band or this sound, or claiming it to be “overhyped”, but that’s simply because there are so many opinions and every one of them is absolutely valid, but not everyone is going to like every album right? If this style suits you and if the band’s first two albums already have a home in your collection, then this is absolutely essential. Essential I say!

Having shown a pretty strong dislike for the Benedictum albums and an even stronger dislike for frontwoman Veronica Freeman’s scream powered vocals, I had absolutely zero interest in The V – Ms Freeman’s debut solo outing. Expectations dare I say, were even lower.
So imagine my surprise to find a rather enjoyable, beautifully sung melodic hard rock (and slightly metal) album right here.
After checking I was playing the right CD, I sat back and took in the “melodic” side of Veronica’s persona and really enjoyed it.

Now or Never features a huge array of special guests, including Pete Wells, Aric Avina and Rikard Stjernquist of Benedictum, Michael Sweet (Stryper), Garry Bordonaro (The Rods), Jeff Pilson (Dokken, Foreigner), Mike Lepond (Symphony X), Tony Martin (Black Sabbath), Jerry Dixon (Warrant) and more.

A strong musical performance and a solid production are immediately noticeable, but what makes it most enjoyable are the lead vocals.
Naturally there are some big metal moments, where the aggression and power are front and center (Again, Ready To Run, King For A Day – featuring Tony Martin on vocals), but the beauty of this album is the range displayed.
There’s groove (Now Or Never, Kiss My Lips), punky hard rock (Rollercoaster), melodic hard rock (L.O.V.E, Line In The Sand, Love Should Be To Blame) and even a track that could be described as AOR (Starshine).

This won’t have me looking forward to a new Benedictum album, but I will certainly hope to see a sequel to The V at some point in the future and commend Veronica Freeman for trying something a little different and pulling it off successfully.
While the continuing change in musicians from track to track do cause some variations in sound and production throughout the album, the songs (mostly written by Freeman and Wells, but including tracks from Nigel Bailey, Vince O’Regan and two from Michael Sweet) and the vocals are the glue that holds this together.
