KANE ROBERTS Signs To Frontiers Records For 2017 Album

Release Year:
2017

Frontiers Music Srl is pleased to announce the signing of Kane Roberts to the label for the release of his next solo album, sometime in 2017.

Kane says, “[o]nce you strap on a guitar and make the hard coded decision to play music in the face of everything you know and don’t know, you find that “the life” (of a musician) has its way with you no matter what and WILL tear you up if you try and wander too far away. I may have stepped into other enterprises and projects, but I was never far from the jet stream that I was lucky enough to have been a part of in the 80s and 90s. Now, because of the new songs inside of me, my guitar and the fans I’m in contact with, I know the creative fire will burn me down if I don’t step back inside the flames. I believe the people at Frontiers Music Srl also feel that creative heat, the need to be an integral part of the music industry (their output is resoundingly prolific) and I don’t know of a better place for me to record and release my new album.

Over the last few years the songs, the messages, and the fans have been burning a hole on my insides. This new album has been gearing up for a while and the songs and messages I’ll be forging will emerge from the fire.

Sorry it took me so long, all kinds of life happened that will definitely find it’s way onto the record and yeah, I’m gonna hit this one hard."

Kane has recorded a total of four solo albums so far (also including the Phoenix Down project released on Frontiers in the late 90’s). Kane’s name and abilities first came to prominence on Alice Cooper’s “Constrictor” album, which was soon followed by his self-titled debut solo album in 1987. More albums and tours with Alice followed, making Kane a well known face in the business especially for his guitar skills, but also for his body-builder image and his now iconic machine-gun guitar.

As a solo recording artist, he has landed a few Top 40 hits and his varied musical background includes recording, writing and touring with artists such as Rod Stewart, Alice Cooper, Desmond Child, KISS, Diane Warren, Alice in Chains, Berlin, Guns N' Roses, Garland Jeffries and more. He’s also written or recorded music for films like Light Sleeper, Penelope Spheeris’ Decline of Western Civilization, Friday the 13th IV Jason Lives, John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness, and more. In 1991, his second solo album, “Saints and Sinners” for Geffen Records included the Top 40 Billboard hit “Does Anybody Really Fall In Love Anymore?”, originally written by Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora.

UK Hard Rockers DOOMSDAY OUTLAW Sign to Frontiers

Categories:
News Feed

Frontiers Music Srl is excited to announce the signing of the brand new, awesome hard rock band from Britain, DOOMSDAY OUTLAW for a multi-album deal.

DOOMSDAY OUTLAW is a ten-legged armageddon machine rolling out of the heart of the United Kingdom, coupling huge riffs and a killer groove with soaring blues vocals and tales of heartbreak and redemption. This hard rock five-piece came together piece by piece over the last two years, with everything clicking into place with the discovery of vocalist Phil Poole in the summer of 2015. John, the band's drummer, says of Phil: "He's our ace in the hole. Everything else was in place with the songwriting and performance, but Phil has just taken the band to the next level.' He joined the well-oiled unit of Steve Broughton and Gavin Mills (guitars), John 'Ironfoot' Willis (drums), and Indy (bass) and from there the band set out to bring their blend of heavy blues to the world at large.

The band initially released a critically-acclaimed independent debut album, 'Black River' in 2015, but knew that they wanted to showcase their new sound even more, so wasted no time in recording a couple of new tunes that summer. Those two tracks, "All That I Have" and "Wait Until Tomorrow", created a real buzz and the band knew that they wanted to start work on a full album as soon as possible. They spent the autumn gigging and writing before heading into the studio in the winter. The resulting album, 'Suffer More' was released in May 2016. The album featured fifteen tracks showcasing huge steps in songwriting and quickly gained rave reviews from around the world including 10/10 from Powerplay Magazine ("I doubt you will hear a better album this year"), a blistering review from Fireworks Magazine ("Now THIS is a find!") and Album of the Week from Worship Metal ("Doomsday Outlaw could release an album every 6 weeks and it'd be better than 99% of the bands out there!").

Please enjoy two videos from 'Suffer More' to get an idea of the sound of the band:

- "Fallback" https://youtu.be/i1FJ0rb6YzA
- "Bring You Pain" https://youtu.be/tX9ygEWuXA0

The band are currently hitting the road in support of 'Suffer More', as well as beginning work on the next set of tunes to unleash on the world.

"We have the luxury of having our own space, being based in a shack in the Derbyshire countryside. It's a bit like The Hills Have Eyes, but we spend our time working on tunes rather than trapping and eating unsuspecting tourists - which is probably for the best,' says Indy, the band's bassist. 'Steve is insatiable...bringing in new riffs or complete songs every time we get together, and it's great to have the space we have to get as loud as possible and bash them into more monster tunes."

'Suffer More' saw the band compared favourably to heavyweight rock icons from Led Zeppelin to the Allman Brothers Band, Pantera to Alter Bridge, Black Stone Cherry to Iron Maiden - and Steve is unfazed by that. "We all listen to whatever we want and every listen is a learning experience. You're constantly learning about dynamics, creating moods, lyrics, production - seeing things you'd want to emulate and things you want to avoid. The comparisons have been great - hugely flattering, and we never see the same band twice, which is good. That says to us that we're not copying any band that's gone before. We are the sum of our musical influences, and also our life experiences."

Indy agrees: "We're always willing to try new things musically, and give them the Doomsday Outlaw stamp and make them new again. I love the bands we've been compared to, and love the challenge of beating that standard on the next album."

The next DOOMSDAY OUTLAW album will be released on Frontiers Music in 2017.

DOOMSDAY OUTLAW are:
- Phil Poole - lead vocals
- Stephen Broughton - guitar
- Gavin Mills - guitar
- Indy - bass and backing vocals
- John Ironfoot Willis - drums

Debut single and video "Unbreakable"

The year is 2024 ... For several billion years the universe has been governed by forces of equal strength and gravity, and equal parts good and evil. But times are about to change with the discovery of a previously unknown massive black hole in our solar system that threatens to devour everything that ever was and ever will be.

As the spiral of dark matter and darkness continues to rotate and close in on the fate of existence; hope is not lost with the unveiling of: “The Ashen Bridge”; a gateway to salvation created in the dreams of the young; the innocent children of the world that know no selfishness, only love.

When they cry out for help at the brink of destruction; somebody actually listens; her name is “Anuviel”.

“SAECRED SPIRIT” is a musical adventure from one of Sweden’s best kept secrets. It is an exciting journey that tells the story of Anuviel - a female emissary of light from a parallel world very close to ours that has been made aware that humanity is on the verge of destruction. The truth is even more disturbing; she soon finds out. The world has been dying for a very long time, burdened by the cacophony of tormented souls and the dissonance of species longing for a home of love and warmth.

Anuviel is a harbinger of life; a guardian of the very essence of time and space, and as such, a being that is eternal; keeper of the secret key made of sound that opens the gates that lead from The Ashen Bridge to any place in the universe. With such power, comes great responsibility and great danger; so she has to hide her inner light - veil her eyes, from forces that want nothing else than darkness to reign.

Faster than any light or thought, Anuviel - is a messenger of hope and strength. Her own sacred steed is a unicorn with the ability to “sing” and enlighten the world that unity of spirit brings the gift of music.

It is time to listen and build strength for what is about to come.

Original Y&T Drummer LEONARD HAZE Passes Away At 61

Artist:
Categories:
News Feed

September 12, 2016 - Hayward, California: Leonard Haze, original drummer for legendarry Bay Area rock band Y&T, passed away Sunday evening, September 11, 2016, at his home in Hayward. He was 61 years old.

Haze had been battling chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) for several years, making breathing difficult. Even so, he had fought to keep playing drums, performing regularly with his band, HazeXperience, and joining Y&T on-stage at the Fillmore in San Francisco in both 2015 and 2016. HazeXperience was scheduled to open for Y&T at the Mystic Theatre in Petaluma November 18 and 19, and had been in the midst of recording an EP of new material.

"Leonard was not only a bandmate but a close friend, sharing not just a passion for music but also our appreciation for fast cars and cool RC planes," said HazeXperience guitarist Jim Bradley. "Leonard was taken from us way too soon."

"Leonard was a good friend, a great drummer, and a true ambassador for the world of rock 'n' roll," said Jeffrey Winslow, lead singer for HazeXperience. "I'm shocked that he's gone, but thankful I got to know him while he was here."

Haze was a founding member and one of the principal songwriters for the Bay Area hard rock band Yesterday & Today, later known as Y&T. He co-wrote some of their biggest hits, including "Hurricane," "Black Tiger," "Mean Streak," "Rescue Me," "Dirty Girl," "Forever," and MTV staple "Summertime Girls."

It was Haze's bass drum prowess that made his powerful drumming style legendary and, thanks to it, Y&T quickly developed the reputation as a must-see live band and musical powerhouse, headlining shows with opening acts such as Van Halen, Mötley Crüe, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and many others. Y&T's hard-driving style helped them land worldwide tours alongside such acts as AC/DC, Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne, and Rush, which resulted in the development of a strong following throughout Europe.

In the early Nineties, Haze played drums on Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan's solo album, Toolbox. Gillan subsequently asked him to join the band, and Haze was part of one of the first rock bands ever to not only perform, but tour, behind the "Iron Curtain," traversing the Soviet Union during the cold war. After that tour, Haze became a permanent member of the Ian Gillan Band, continuing with a two-year world tour and performing in 71 countries.

In 2002, Haze reunited with Y&T and went back on tour with them throughout the United States until they parted ways in 2006.

Haze's final performance took place August 20 with HazeXperience at the Quarter Note in Sunnyvale.

Mecca - "Gone" (Album '3' Out October 14)

Records like this don’t come along very often. At least not in 2016 they don’t.
But this is one for the ages. MECCA will now find themselves sitting alongside genre classics from Toto, Mr. Mister, Survivor, Giant and Journey to name a few.

Recorded over the last 3 years in Nashville, this is a record that would have topped AOR charts back in the day. Make no mistake – this is a classic.

Featuring Toto's DAVID HUNGATE on his last rock record!

Featuring Toto drummer SHANNON FORREST who also produces.

All analogue production, just like the 80s.

FM Take Their 'Indiscreet 30' Re-recording To Frontiers

Artist:
Friday, November 4, 2016
Categories:
News Feed

FM and Frontiers Music Srl are pleased to announce that due to overwhelming demand, the 'Indiscreet 30' album will see a formal commercial release on November 4th.

Thirty years after the release of their now classic debut album, FM decided to record a modern-day version of 'Indiscreet'. FM were asked many times to consider re-recording the tracks on the album using today's modern technology and recording techniques to give the songs the "FM sound" of today.

Over the years, 'Indiscreet' has deservedly won the reputation of being an iconic album for the band. FM always steered clear of the idea of re-recording it, but while in the studio recording the follow-up to their most recent release, HEROES & VILLAINS, FM decided to put down a backing track to the song "That Girl" to see how it would feel with the huge sounds they were getting at the time. It gave the song a new dynamic and power that was not possible to achieve with '80s recording technology. 'We played it back the following morning and decided it would be great to hear all these classic songs with this new lease of life,' says bassist Merv Goldsworthy. 'We are not trying to recreate the original, but this is our interpretation played by FM as we are today with the sound of FM 2016.'

In addition to the re-recording of the original album, INDISCREET 30 also features seven bonus tracks, including brand new song "Running On Empty" and a new recording of "Let Love Be The Leader".

INDISCREET 30 was produced by FM, recorded at Tremolo Studios and Coal House Studios, Staffordshire and mixed by Jeff Knowler (METROPOLIS, ROCKVILLE and HEROES & VILLAINS).

Tracklisting:
1. That Girl
2. Other Side Of Midnight
3. Love Lies Dying
4. I Belong To The Night

11. Running On Empty
12. Rainbow's End

Palace is another new Swedish discovery for Frontiers Records and the world. Primarily the band is formed and performed by Michael Palace, credited as vocalist and guitarist as well as co-producer alongside one of Frontiers’ go to guys – Daniel Flores.
The 4 piece band is essentially for live performances, the studio credits behind this album assign Michael Palace to vocals, guitars, bass and keyboards and Daniel Flores drums and additional keyboards.

Much like other newcomers Cruzh, Palace is a pure 80s outfit, heavily reliant on keyboards, but delivering a heavier sound overall with guitars the more dominating feature.
Swirling keyboards, layers of guitars and fast moving 80s themed melodic hard rock is the order of the day, wrapped in a very tight Flores production.

Some of the songs really do trade off the glory days of 80s rock, but with enough power to sound fresh today. Fans of Brother Firetribe will delight in such songs as the massive anthem Part Of Me and Cool Runnin’; while the ballad Rules Of The Game is one of the year’s best.
However, I think the 3 best tracks of all are the final 3.
She Said It’s Over is a is a glorious little moody anthem with a killer hook; Stranger’s Eyes is a smooth slice of Street Talk styled AOR and Young Wild Free is a bubbly, feel good anthem to close out the album in mid-80s style.

Highlight of the month I think. A very strong debut featuring a few songs that have end of year Best Of qualities. Michael Palace has a very likable voice and Daniel Flores again delivers in the produces chair. Revised sequencing might even add another point or two.

You need a bit of variety in your music and this month it is DGM from Italy, presenting their 8th studio album! Yes, 8. This is however the first I’ve heard from them, but it’s enough to get my attention right from the start.
Performing a mix of progressive metal and European symphonic hard rock, Evergrey singer Tom Englund and Symphony X guitarist Michael Romeo both appear as special guests and the band thanks both bands plus Secret Sphere, Pagan’s Mind and Circus Maximus in their liner notes.
That should give you some indication of where the band sits musically.

That established, it is all about the songs and much like others of this ilk, this record is not a one-listen and appreciate kind of deal. Its only over repeated listens that the true melodies and the intricacies of the songs show themselves.
There’s a lot of Dream Theater in these guys too. The hooks and chorus structures aren’t obvious, but they are there.
Songs range from 2 to 8 minutes in length, with melodies often revealing themselves in the vocals within verses, much like that of Circus Maximus.

I can’t quite rank this album up with the artists that influence the sound of DGM, but the impressive and likeable lead vocals, plus the intelligent arrangements and powerful performances do make this album one to remember and check out if you’re a fan of the progressive way of life.

More new talent and I can only say that is a good thing – this scene needs new blood to survive, but we need really great talent for any longer term benefits.
Looks like King Company is one of those bands. Yet another Scandinavian outfit, these lads from Finland deliver classic 70s hard rock with a heavy dose of Deep Purple and Rainbow with organ to match and the extreme Joe Lynn Turner like vocals from Pasi Rantanen.

This album rocks with a rhythm section ready to crush ears and a guitarist that knows his way around a fretboard.
The classic meets modern feel of this band is going to deliver them fans, no question.
The sonic blast of Shining and In Wheels Of No Return are bombastic hard rockers with killer hooks and Coming Back To Life is prime 1980s Rainbow.
There’s some vocal similarities to Mats Levin too – and his band Dogface.
Tracks like Wings Of Love and Holding On are hard, heavy and melodic enough for all rock fans to appreciate.

Dramatic, heavy throughout, commercial enough to contain some very good hooks and performances from these veterans of the Finnish scene that really blow the roof off when cranked.
A thoroughly fabulous debut and one for fans of classic rock and the likes of Heaven & Earth to get hold of.

Great to see Frontiers investing in new talent and this month sees a double header of more Swedish melodic goodness.
First up is Cruzh (crush) – a new three-piece (with a guest drummer) delivering an album of polish Scandi AOR with a strong keyboard driven 80s sound.
Think very early Bon Jovi mixed with the keyboards of Only Child, but with the vocals of REO’s Kevin Cronin gone glam? That make any sense whatsoever?

There is an aspect of sugary sweetness that might be a tad too sweet for some. And I do think the vocals can be a weak point within some areas on the album – the glam angle is played up on some songs.

The high points of the album are the riff driven First Cruzh; the anthemic Aim For The Head; the mid-tempo moodiness of Survive; the 80s rock radio styled You and the feel good fast moving Set Me FreeAn ambitious 7 and a half minute power ballad Straight From My Heart closes the album. The last couple of minutes are pretty spectacular.

A strong debut featuring a throwback sound and style, but a crisp production. The albums best songs point towards a bright future. Hopefully they can build on this for many years to come.

I love this album from the bottom of my heart. Well, the original at least! Mechanical Resonance is I think, one of the greatest debut albums of all time. It’s still the best Tesla album ever (although their catalogue is wonderfully consistent) and it’s hard to believe its 30 years old.
Recorded over the course of a tour of the USA, the original 12 songs are compiled here in order of that magnificent debut in a very nice tribute to it.

The band is still kicking ass and there was never going to be any question of how good these songs were going to sound. They rock of course!
The only fear I had was going to be the quality of Jeff Keith’s voice. 30 years of rockin and rollin will do a lot of damage to a vocalist and its clear to hear that he has aged and the pitch is a little rougher and raspier, but hell, he still sounds good to me and the energy portrayed by him and the whole band on these performances means that Mechanical Resonance is given the fitting tribute it deserves.

A 13th track is a preview from the band's upcoming new studio album co-written and co-produced with Def Leppard's Phil Collen. A great taste of what's to come too. A mid-tempo melodic rocker that's old-school Tesla.

A nice raw, rough and raspy rock n roll retro rollercoaster.

Braver Than We Are is apparently Meat Loaf’s last album. Even if that wasn’t the intention, once the fanbase gets hold of this, that will be the end result. This is a career killer.
The bravest aspect of this release is how anyone other than Meat Loaf would want to put their name on it. And I don’t say any of this lightly. I’ve had the album advance for nearly 2 months now and I have to force myself to play it to review.
Now, before the abuse from card carrying Meat Loaf fan club members starts – people who maybe have never read this site before – let’s get a couple of facts straight.

Firstly - Jim Steinman is one of the greatest songwriters of this age. I’ve got everything he has ever done. Ever. And Meat Loaf is Jim’s greatest foil. He takes his songs and elevates them to a majestic level that no other artist has been able to reach. Some have come close (Bonnie Tyler, Air Supply & Pandora’s Box), but Meat is (or was at least) one of a kind.
I’ve got every Meat album too. We know they are a little hit and miss, but a couple of his recent efforts since Bat 2 were pretty damn good. This isn’t. At all.

I rate Bat 1&2 as two of the best pomp rock albums in history. But as much as I hate to say it, Meat is done. And I’ve lost a lot of respect for him recently as he continues to mime his way across the world on a farewell lap he should have taken a decade ago. I’ve seen Meat live. He was amazing, but the health problems and the lost voice suggests he should have retired on top.

Not only has Meat’s voice sunk to a level hitherto uncharted by any recording artist I can recall, but the songs just don’t work as a cohesive release here. The sporadic nature of their origins gives the album a disjointed approach that perhaps could be glued together by a dynamite performance from the big man, but when he fails to show up, the scattered nature becomes so much more obvious.

The album opens in bizarre fashion. Who Needs the Young is a track more suited to the opening of a circus than a bombastic rock album. And it is at the 1 minute 40 mark that the fate of this entire album is determined. That’s 5 seconds after Meat starts “singing” and you realize that his voice is absolutely shot.
The jazzy, cabaret style 1920s tune might sound completely at home amongst other similar tracks in one of Steinman’s musicals, but this 5-minute romp is possibly one of the worst lead album tracks in recent memory.

The 11 minute plus Going All the Way Is Just the Start (A Song in 6 Movements) is everything I love about Jim Steinman’s epic songwriting. Had Meat recorded it 10 years ago, I’m sure it could be another huge hit. All the required elements of a Steinman epic are here – pounding piano, ever changing tempos and bombastic overtures. It’s a great song and my favourite of the album I guess, but only because the starring role is taken by vocalists Ellen Foley and Karla DeVito. Meat’s vocal parts sound labored and painful at times and even in a support role they detract from the female leads. The production is also lacking that hands on Steinman stamp – the drum sound in particular is of little impact.

And already we have a ballad in play – the sparse piano and acoustic guitar driven Speaking in Tongues is all about the vocals, but it’s missing that big booming voice required to take it to any level worth remembering. Stacy Michelle tries to lift it, but instead it labors along and kills any momentum set up by the last track.

Loving You's a Dirty Job (But Somebody's Gotta Do It) features Stacy Michelle once again trying to mask how bad Meat’s unsteady, barely in tune vocals are. Another terrific song from Jim, but one that’s some 30 years old and delivered better back in the day by Bonnie Tyler. Love Stacey’s voice, but her performance is not enough to make the song what it could have been.

Another epic is up – the 8 minute Souvenirs kicks in with some subtle horns and then one of Meat’s most wobbly vocals of the album. God I hate typing this. The brass plays on through the track and takes us back to the early days of Meat & Jim, but the track really doesn’t get going until the 5-minute mark, when the vocals lift along with the tempo, but there really isn’t any reason for this track to run so long.

Only When I Feel is one of those quirky short Steinman songs that’s just a little left of centre and typically acts a circuit breaker on his albums. And I like the premise here – but once again, I’m sorry to say, but Meat’s vocals are barely listenable. I love the passion he’s trying to deliver and I can feel him hurting, its emotional. But it’s just soul destroying to hear.

Then we dive straight into the completely over the top, hard rocking More. It’s the first time the angst and the passion has really boiled over on this relatively restrained album. The track retains its gothic overtones from the original Sisters Of Mercy recording back in the day and it does suit the big man, but it stands out as a little out of place. Once again female lead vocals are brought in to get Meat through the song.

Godz is just completely bizarre. More a spoken word track, with a heavy, bombastic guitar sound, it’s another interesting left turn from Steinman, but I think won’t be received that well in the context of the rest of this album.

Skull of Your Country is another piano ballad with more female lead (this time featuring Cian Coey) morphing part of Total Eclipse Of The Heart with a new verse and chorus. More music than vocals (yet again), it’s an ok song that you just wish was more over the top.

Closing this sorry album is the crappy fast moving pop/rock Train of Love, featuring a horrible chorus, really poor programming and a totally forgettable hook. What a disappointing way to finish a disappointing album.

This is a truly horrible way to end a grand recording career. The whole album just doesn’t gel – from the missing “Jim” factor (collaborating from afar hasn’t worked), to the restrained almost laid back feel of the album, to Meat’s vocal performance – words just can’t describe that. I'm sure Meat will say it's all intentional, but no-one sings like this intentionally. And if his voice isn't completely gone, why is he miming on stage?
I’m beyond disappointed and this comes from a lifetime Steinman/Meat Loaf fan. I doubt I’ll ever play this album again.

Frontiers Music Srl is pleased to announce the highly anticipated twelfth original Glenn Hughes album "Resonate" - released on Friday 4th November 2016. The album dovetails Glenn’s UK and European tour with American Grammy Award winners Living Colour, which kicks off in the UK on Tuesday 8th November (see tour dates listed below).
A true vocal and musical icon of our times, in the past couple of years Glenn concentrated again on his solo career. Sold out crowds were the order of the day, while touring non-stop throughout 2015, with shows in South America, Europe, UK, Japan and Singapore.

In addition, late in 2015, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame based in the USA, announced that Deep Purple including MKIII, are finally to be inducted after several previous nominations over the years. This was a culmination of a 40+ years career which saw Glenn leave his indelible mark in several musical endeavours and bands, including Trapeze, Deep Purple, Hughes/Thrall, his collaborations with Gary Moore, Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi and most recently with Black Country Communion and California Breed.
2016 was his busiest year yet. With summer festivals and solo shows in the USA, UK and Europe, finally Glenn’s first solo album in over 8 years that will see the light of day! "Resonate" is truly a triumphant return to form for "The Voice of Rock"!

From album opener, "Heavy" to the very last chords of the closer, "Long Time Gone", it promises to be a contender for 'Album of the Year'. It features his live solo band members, Soren Andersen (guitars and co-producer), Pontus Engborg (drums) and newcomer to his band, Lachy Doley (keyboards), in addition to long-time friend and drummer, Chad Smith (of Red Hot Chili Peppers), who joined them in the studio for the opening and closing numbers.
It might well be the most heavy sounding of his solo albums, but as is his trademark, musical diversity shines through and as Glenn commented upon completion of the new recording, "this album is the first kind of a complete Glenn Hughes album".

No other rock musician has carved such a distinctive style blending the finest elements of hard rock, soul and funk. That astonishing voice is Hughes' calling card and the new album, "Resonate" will shine as a true Glenn Hughes landmark release.
Make no mistake. The Voice of Rock never left the building!

"Resonate" will be available in two configurations: regular cd and deluxe edition including one bonus track and DVD. Vinyl release will be made available via the Frontiers’ label partners Soulfood Music.
The Deluxe Edition includes the bonus track "Nothing's The Same" plus a bonus DVD disc featuring the "Making of" the album documentary – "Heavy" (song video) and "Long Time Gone" (song video).

Glenn Hughes: All Vocals, Bass Guitar, Acoustic Guitar
Soren Andersen: Guitars
Pontus Enborg: Drums & Percussion
Lachy Doley: Keyboards
Chad Smith: Drums on "Heavy" & "Long Time Gone"

Produced by Glenn Hughes & Soren Andersen.

On the announcement of the UK and European tour with Living Colour, Hughes comments: "I'm super excited to be touring later this year with my band. Joining us will be my friends from the USA, Living Colour. An evening for all you SOULMOVERS."
The ‘Voice of Rock’ will perform a collection of music from his extensive career, including selections from Trapeze, Deep Purple, Hughes/Thrall and Black Country Communion as well as solo material from the new album "Resonate".

20FROM20 (1996-2016) - 20 Underrated But Essential Melodic Rock Albums

Artist:
Categories:
MelRock Awards

2016 is of course the 20th Anniversary of MelodicRock.com – my online presence began in October 1996 with a basic news website (under a couple of different names) before the domain MelodicRock.com was adopted in 1998 (or thereabouts!)...

To celebrate 20 years covering the music we all love, I am posting a number of 20FROM20 features, counting down some of the best music and artists of the last 20 years, 1996-2016.

So let’s get started!

20 LESS KNOWN YET ESSENTIAL MELODICROCK ALBUMS YOU REALLY SHOULD OWN FROM THE LAST 20 YEARS…

01. HUMANIMAL - Humanimal
Named after a Talisman album, this one off project featuring JSS, Marcel Jacob and Pontus Norgren, it’s a masterclass in melodic, yet heavy and groovy hard rock. And the songs are simply unforgettable. Still one of my favourite JSS albums ever.

02. THE SIGN - Signs of Life
The production didn’t do justice to the quality of the songs, but this teaming of Terry Brock, Randy Jackson, Mark Mangold and Billy Greer was a true masterstroke. The guys wrote the material together, so it reflected a new band, not a project and the mix of progressive and AOR created some stunning music that is every bit as wonderful today.

03. KHARMA - Wonderland
One of my favourite Goran Edman fronted albums ever. Glorious Swedish album that has sadly never been followed up. Its pomp meets classic rock meets Scandi melodic rock. It’s brilliant.

04. MILLENIUM - Hourglass
Still one of the best Jorn Lande fronted albums and a brilliant mix of commercial hard rock and soaring chorus melodies with the power of Whitesnake or Blue Murder. Ralf Santolla and crew rule.

05. SNAKES IN PARADISE - Dangerous Love
Stefan Berggren remains one of the best vocalists around and he is sadly underrated as is this band. This is their best album and still one of my all time favourites from Sweden.

06. SR71 - Now You See Inside
The band defined the modern rock sound in the late 90s, a really promising band, terrific melodic yet powerful songs. Want to know what the nu-breed of melodic rock sounds like – it’s this album!

07. NELSON - Life
The Nelsons took a step back from their normal sound to deliver one of the finest pop/rock harmony records ever. This is still my favourite Nelson album – its pure pop, but it’s also pure melodic bliss. And the songs are unbelievably catchy.

08. JIMI JAMISON’S SURVIVOR – Empires
A little controversial because Jimi was fighting Frankie over the name, and the album had a
rough time in production, with the band having their own issues, but in the end it got made and the songs were moody and wonderful and the vocal performance from Jimi was glorious.

09. WESTWORLD - Westworld
TNT’s Tony Harnell and Riot’s Mark Reale with Bruno Ravel. This is the first of four albums and it perfectly demonstrates what I love about Tony when he turns slightly heavier and darker. Brilliant.

10. BOB CATLEY - The Tower
Bob’s debut solo album saw the Magnum vocalist turn heavier, darker and with the backing of Ten and the songs of Gary Hughes, he delivered a masterpiece. Ten meet Magnum, but heavier than both. Still sounding fresh and vibrant.

11. CROWN OF THORNS - Lost Cathedral
The debut album is the one that gets all the love, but don’t leave this one out of your collection. The sometimes patchy COT deliver their most consistent and strong album after the debut.

12. WHITESNAKE - Restless Heart
David Coverdale turns down the screams and sings in the tone of an older, mature vocalist, who may not have the range, but had lost none of the charisma and warmth only he could deliver. And some terrific mid-tempo songs too. Wish he’d come back to this style.

13. KIP WINGER - Thisconversationseemslikeadream
Personal tragedy provided lyrical depth not seen before from Kip, or just about any other artist for that matter. Musically it is like an opera, it is a true masterpiece and immediately become a long-time favourite. Mood, melody, intelligent arrangements and impossible not to love and respect.

14. SHUGAAZER - Shift
Paul Laine does modern melodic rock with the same class and talent as he does everything else. Hugely underrated album with some truly amazing songs, none better than the heart wrenching ballad Something Worth Waiting For.

15. ATTRACTION 65 - Attraction 65
Another modern album, but as with everything the late, great Gregg Fulkerson does, its filled with deep melodies, moody Springsteen-esque Americana. The difference here is the more modern sound and to be honest, these songs could have been on any radio station in the world, such was their quality.

16. LEVERAGE - Tides
Vocalist Pekka Heino and guitarist Torsti Spoof form the backbone of this album – another glorious slice of Scandinavian melodic hard rock/metal. Power, finesse and a big fat production equals an album that has not yet been topped.

17. BEGGARS & THIEVES - Look What You Create
Like Crown Of Thorns, B&T get all the love for their debut – well deserved to. But this is a fine quality album too and really showcases the awesome vocals of Louie Merlino. Another one of my favourite bands because they are different than the majority.

18. VON GROOVE - Test of Faith
Another instance of a band stepping back from heavier origins to concentrate on songs and delivering big time. It’s more melodic than any other album in their catalogue, and it really suited them. Easily my favourite Von Groove album.

19. ALFONZETTI - Ready
Matti Alfonzetti delivers a commercial melodic rock album with a few covers and a few originals, but all great performances and one for all fans of classic melodic rock.

20. STRANDED – Long way To Heaven
This album goes back to 1999 and I’m still waiting for a sequel! Agent’s Troy Reid brings his gruff, quirky vocals to a project fronted by Canadian guitarist Kenny Kaos (Pokerface/The Distance). Once again, it’s the songs that rule the day. I hated this on first listen, but just to demonstrate you never review anything until it’s worn in, I came to love it and still do.

RockPages Talks To Donnie Van Zant

Tuesday, December 2, 2014
Categories:
Podcasts & Radio

RockPagesGR have interviewed Donnie Van Zant, brother of Johnny and of course the great Ronnie...talking about his recent album with Johnny, the chance of working with him again on a new album, Van Zant's turning to country on album three, his retirement, the tragic plane crash in '77, childhood and the stories about Ronnie's ghost...

You can find the interview here: http://rockpages.gr/en/interviews/item/4630-van-zant

Here are some extracts...

Rockpages.gr: How did your collaboration with Johnny as Van Zant brothers come up in 1998 when you released the album “Brother To Brother”?
Donnie Van Zant: Well, my brother, the only way I can explain it is that in happened back in 1977. You know, that was when my older brother Ronnie was killed on the plane crash. After that a lot of things changed for me. One thing with John, I just told myself right then and theere that I will make sure that I spend a lot of time, as much I can spend with him. Basically, I was just starting and I wanted to spend as much time with him being brothers more than anything. So, when these opportunities came up to do musical projects I jumped on it, he did too.

Rockpages.gr: Is there any chance that you guys make another record, what do you think?
Ronnie Van Zant: You know what? I say “never say never!” Because, I will be truthful with you, we write constantly! I mean when he is home and I am not doing other projects and stuff we just constantly write. We probably have enough songs to do another two records. So, it’s just a part of our lives, it’s what we actually do, sort of our hobby: writing songs. We are next door neighbors, so it’s very easy. Johnny has a little office and we get together and bang them out, you know.

Rockpages.gr: Are you officially considered retired?
Donnie Van Zant: You know what? If this is retirement I am doing more work than I should, hahaha! You know, what happened was that I wass out on tour with .38 Special somewhere in Texas, I can’t remember where we were at, but it was Texas, and it was our first show, I was gettingg ready for the show there and I had some bleeding from one of my ears and that freaked me completely out! And then it stopped and went ahead, but I had a really hard time on that particular show. I couldn’t really hear chords very well and between you and me I was singing out of key and that was really embarrassing! So, we had a few more shows and then I called my specialist and when I came how I went to see him and he couldn’t see where the bleeding came from, but he told me to take a hearing test. Obviously, I agreed to it and when I did the hearing test I haven’t realized how much of my hearing I have lost. I knew I was having problems, but I’d never admitted to myself, but, I hhave lost probably about 75% of high and mid range, so I got about 25% left here, so I am doing what I can,

Rockpages.gr: There have beeen many stories, and lots of them are published about Ronnie’s spirit, even Ronnie’s ghost, people seeing Ronnie fishing or wandering around, do you believe any of that? Havve you seen any of that?
Donnie Van Zant: You know, I WISH! I would love to see him again! I don’t care how! Hahahah! But, firstly I haven’t! I’ve been always a true believer and that, I believe in spiritual beings and stuff like thhat and I can tell you that through all those years of playing there were times when I thought Ronnie was on that stage with me, I could feel him! And it was sort of weird but I could! As well as other people, my mother and father, my sister, so, yes I do believe it but I havenn’t seen Ronnie. I wish I could!

FOREIGNER and returning to DOKKEN bassist JEFF PILSON guests on Ep. 257 of One On One With Mitch Lafon.

LINK TO INTERVIEW: http://www.spreaker.com/user/talkingmetal/1on1-mitch-lafon-257-jeff-pilson-dokken

In the show's only interview, Foreigner bassist Jeff Pilson talks about his upcoming return to Dokken, the possibilities for a new album, on 'doing it for the money' and much more.

Quotes from the interview:

For the money criticism (time 1.44): "This is entertainment. This is art. I think people and even artists themselves don't want to think that they do it just for the money. We have a fairly privileged life doing this and to think that we do it just for the money kind of brings up a bad picture in your mind."

(time 2.18): "I think that's how Mick was honestly feeling like the only reason he wanted to do it was for the money, but I've spoken with him since and now he's excited and gets the musical possibilities."

(Time 2.30): "We have a chance to go out and prove ourselves again as a band. I do love music and I do love Dokken even though we were a troubled band in so many ways."

The old wounds (time 5.58): "The truth is - in putting this thing together there were some old wounds that opened up. I think that's bound to happen. We're all pretty passionate dudes. We're all pretty sensitive dudes, but it gave us the opportunity to clear the air a little bit."

Is it really the end? (time 10.54): "Don says it is so I've got to take him at his word. For me, I would keep it as an open door."

METALLICA’s Hetfield, Hammett Revisit 1991 Metal To Mainstream Masterpiece

Artist:
Wednesday, November 26, 2014
Categories:
Podcasts & Radio

Dallas, TX - September 7, 2016.  North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History’s Greatest Rock Bands  scores James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett on the 25th anniversary of Metallica’s “Black Album”.

Over twenty-two million people have purchased Metallica’s 1991 “Black Album”.  To put that into perspective, that’s millions more than the Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s... or Abbey Road or any Led Zeppelin album.

A decade into an uncompromising career, Metallica stood as one of the most uncompromising foundaries of heavy music. Their reputation for blunt trauma heavy metal in an era of heavily produced hair-band pop metal set them apart. But as the ‘90s began, Metallica challenged themselves to creatively expand by adding producer Bob Rock to the mix, creating a tense work environment marred with conflict, but ultimately producing timeless classics “Enter Sandman”, “The Unforgiven” and “Nothing Else Matters”.

James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett share with In The Studio host Redbeard how the addition of a real producer impacted the band in the studio.

“There was a little intimidation on both sides... He (Bob Rock) called me ‘Dr. No.’.. As soon as he’d open his mouth, “NO” would come out of mine.” (laughs) -  James Hetfield

“The farther along the album got, the more the tension kind of just like built up. At the end of the day, if that’s what we had to do, that’s what we had to do.” -  Kirk Hammett

As a bonus, In the Studio previews “Hardwired to Self-Destruct” from Metallica’s forthcoming  double album due out this November.

Metallica ‘Black Album’ @ 25 / InTheStudio program is available now to STREAM at: http://www.inthestudio.net/redbeards-blog/metallica-25th-anniversary/

FEMME FATALE Releases Second Album 'One More From The Road'

Artist:
Categories:
News Feed

Femme Fatale releases their long awaited second album, One More For The Road, on FnA Records (www.fnarecords.net) this spring of 2016.  The album was recorded back in 1989/90 with the original band members and has never seen the light of day…until now.  One More From The Road picks up right where the debut release left off.

In 1988 Hair Band “Femme Fatale” made some big noise on radio and MTV with 2 very popular songs and videos - “Waiting For The Big One” & “Fallin’ In and Out of Love” from their first release on MCA Records. There was a U.S. tour with Cheap Trick & dates in the U.K. and heavy rotation for the videos.

MCA was ready for a second release from the band & had them writing with outside writers & rehearsing once they got back from the tour.
“Yeah, it was all really exciting to think we were going to get back in the studio since we had really cut our teeth out on the road” says Lorraine Lewis – singer & songwriter for the band. “I was having writing sessions with some really great L.A. songwriters like Wes Arkeen (considered the 6th member of Guns & Roses who co-wrote “It’s So Easy” with Duff McKagen) and Jack Conrad (Heart, John Waite).

There were big plans for this “baby band” & an industry “buzz” had been established primarily from Femme Fatale’s popular videos and their live shows.

“When we thought we had written a good number of songs we liked, we booked some time at a rehearsal studio in the valley to record our demos for the label,” says Lewis. “The boys had been working hard on arrangements & I was busy spending my time hanging out with Sunset Strip bands like D’ Molls & Poison, and Rock City Angels. We asked our friend Toby Wright, also from Albuquerque to come down to help with the recording.” Toby was the engineer for “heavy hitters”- Ron Nevison (Heart) & Mike Clink (G n’ R).
The result of this studio time was a bunch of rough demos that the band was going to present to MCA records, to show them where Femme Fatale was heading.  With a changing musical landscape and new record personnel, the band was ultimately dropped from the label.  Move twenty-five years forward and those demos were still closely guarded by Lorraine, stored away in between the pages of To Kill A Mockingbird.  Femme Fatale fans have always been screaming for a second FF album, and the time has finally come.

Lorraine Lewis states, “Thanks to F n A Records, this long time lost gem is finally seeing the light of day! These recordings are raw, rough, and have a live feel to them. They have been mastered by F n A Records and it is important to note that even though the quality is not perfect, these recordings were made over a quarter of a century ago with the original members of Femme Fatale!”

One More For The Road, contains 14 blistering tracks with obvious Femme Fatale hits like “Lady In Waiting”, “Don’t Mean Nothin’” and “Til It’s Shot” and the power ballad “Buried Alive”.  Additionally, we hear Lorraine Lewis’ voice on her mesmerizing version of Janis Joplin’s “Piece Of My Heart.”

It’s been a quarter of a century coming and its finally here for the fans to embrace; a true gem recorded back in the day; Hear what you have been missing…One More For The Road.

TOTO Cancel Show as JOSEPH WILLIAMS Hospitalised

TOTO were forced to cancel; their Denver gig last night due to singer JOSPEH WILLIAMS taking Ill and being briefly hospitalised. But he's doing ok - here's his update:

To the wonderful Toto fans, friends and family,
Last night in Denver I experienced my first real bout of altitude sickness! That, plus some dehydration that I wasn’t keeping track of, concerned me enough to get checked out by a doctor at the local hospital as the paramedics on site deemed it a necessary precaution.
Ultimately docs said I was totally fine, told me to drink more water and sent me back to the tour bus.
I am AOK and will see everyone at the show tomorrow night in Salt Lake City!
I am SO sorry for scaring folks and for the inevitable cancellation of our show in Denver.
I promise at the earliest opportunity we will return to Colorado to make it up to all of you who came out to see us.
Big thanks all of you and my brothers and sisters in Toto for the amazing show of support.
Love and Blessings
Joseph Williams
