Reviews are back! And they’re staying back. With more than 200 albums to catch up on, the first on the block is the latest from one of my favourite groups ever – Mr. Big.

Let’s cut right to the chase. This is without doubt the worst sounding Mr. Big album ever. I’m not sure why this ultra-toned down bass heavy style was chosen – but with the combined talent of the 4 guys plus production genius Kevin Elson, it had to of been a conscious decision.

The sound gives the impression of a really muddy mix, but everything can be heard clear enough. This took a good while to appreciate, the nature of the music is quite different from the usual Mr. Big sound and quite diverse also. It reminds me of the raw energy and tempo of the debut, which I put a long way ahead of this album.
But there are some real gems here – even if the guys did seem to run short towards the end of the album.

The man in control of this album appears to be Paul Gilbert, as his guitar is truly the driving force, not just in the riffs, but also in the song melodies as best exemplified with the two best songs of the album, the title track Defying Gravity and also the head turning ripping flurry of notes driving Mean To Me.

The album sits in mid-tempo mode for the majority of it’s 11 songs. The groove is, as usual, one of the highlights of playback, I just love these guys when going at it on the opening Open Your Eyes, Everybody Needs A Little Trouble and the two aforementioned tracks.

Interspersed between the grooves is the glorious feel good acoustic rocker Damn I’m In Love Again and one of the band’s finest ballads ever in Forever & Back. It’s a real gem with a killer Eric Martin vocal.
Its followed immediately by another melodic track She’s All Coming Back To Me Now, before a trilogy of groovers. Sadly I could probably have stopped the album here as while 1992 is average, the next two are slow and dull, with only the last 90 seconds of Be Kind proving worthy. If only the instrumental flurry here was more prevalent throughout the album.

Well, there’s several typically fantastic tracks here, which I will add to my Mr. Big playlist, but also several fillers and that production sound.
So while there’s magic to be heard, it’s in the individual tracks rather than the album as a whole.

In Episode 99 of The Double Stop, Brian is joined by return guest Eric
Martin (Mr. Big)

Eric Martin returns to discuss the new Mr Big album 'Defying Gravity',
as well as his past solo records, Triumph’s cover of “Just One Night"
and dealing with online trolls.

On the new sounds on "Defying Gravity" (16:46) "I actually love it,
but when we did it at first I was second guessing and wondering if
this was going to work. I hoped people were going to dig it. Because
it's a different format than what we've done before. We've always hat
that "Daddy Brother" or "Addicted To That Rush". And the next song is
a middle of the road country rock kind of song, And the next on e is a
ballad. And this one is different"

On Triumph recording a version of his solo song "Just One Night"
(32:20) "I'd written that song with Neal Schon (Journey), and I did
the demo with Kevin Elson. And Mike (Clink) turned it on to the guys.
They did an amazing job of it. A really cool song for triumph. A
different kind of song for Triumph."

Coldspell are based in the north of Sweden and were formed in 2005 by guitarist and songwriter Michael Larsson. Since their first release ColdSpell have been one of the bands you like to mention when talking high class Scandi hard rock.

Coldspell blasted onto the scene in 2009 with their own brand of hard rock/metal. They first took the world by storm with their "Infinite Stargaze" release, an album that created a stir in rock circles and the album received stunning reviews all over the world and was on several album "top lists" for 2009 and album of the year at various magazines and radio stations.
Two years later in 2011 a brand new release "Out from the Cold" was put out to an eager audience, once again mixed by Tommy Hansen in Denmark, Tommy of course having previously worked with Helloween, TNT, Pretty Maids, Jorn and Pagan's Mind.

In 2013 Coldspell put out a new recording entitled "Frozen Paradise", once again with Tommy Hansen at the mixing desk. This was an unbelievable recording and the band have extended their expertise with razor sharp riffs, solid rhythms and great choruses.

With three albums released so far the wait is over. Coldspell are ready to strike again with the brand new album titled 'A New World Arise'. This is stunning recording that features 12 new songs of epic proportions and it's going to put ColdSpell firmly on the map. This is Scandinavian melodic rock of the highest order and will be a strong contender for the hard rock album of 2017.

Def Leppard Turns Tragedy Into Hysteria
Joe Elliott, Rick Savage Reveal Making Of 1987 Blockbuster Album

Dallas, TX - JULY 27, 2017.  North American syndicated Rock radio show  IN THE STUDIO with Redbeard: The Stories Behind History’s Greatest Rock Bands celebrates the 30th anniversary of Def Leppard’s mega-selling Hysteria album with lead singer Joe Elliott and bassist, singer Rick Savage.

Coming off the 7x platinum selling Pyromania album, Def Leppard were emerging on top of the Rock heap in ’83-’84. Attempting to follow-up the massive seller quickly, Def Leppard were hard at work recording their next album by the winter of 1984 when a tragic freak car accident would leave drummer Rick Allen without his left arm. It would be another two and a half years of intense work in the studio, including a switch back to producer Mutt Lang, before Hysteria would finally be released to a long awaiting fanbase. Joe Elliott tells IN THE STUDIO host Redbeard about a comical encounter with legendary Stones singer Mick Jagger that drove home the ridiculousness of there 4 1/2 year gap between albums.

“We had Mick Jagger come in and do two solo albums in the same complex when we were doing the first one (Hysteria). (Elliott imitating Mick says) “Bloody Hell, you guys are still here? Weren’t you here doing that album when I was doing She’s The Boss?” “Yeah” (replies Elliott) (Jagger imitation) “Well, I’ve done that one, I’ve toured. I’ve had two kids, done a Stones album and toured and now I’m back doing my next solo album and your still here.” (laughter)                                                                                          -  Joe Elliott

CAROUSEL VERTIGO Get 'Revenge On Rock N Roll' Sept 29

Friday, September 29, 2017

Rock is dead, long live rock!

It's been said before and will be said again.  The truth is that rock music is and always will be here to stay, especially when a band like Carousel Vertigo creates, feels and plays it like it does.

Revenge of Rock and Roll.  The title says it all and the second album by Carousel Vertigo makes a clear musical statement; about a trend-proof musical genre, about its importance,  now and always, to the loyal millions who will forever support it – and about how that shit just never grows old, say what you will about it.

Revenge of Rock and Roll finds Paris-based Carousel Vertigo – three native French rockers and an American – doing what this band does best and loves the most, regardless of opinions or passing phases, because hard rock truly is timeless and ever-present.

Carousel Vertigo's masterful take on it, the band's innate understanding of the history of rock's past and a vision of its future, is convincing and current enough to have attracted some stellar accomplices on Revenge of Rock and Roll – not least among them Garry Tallent, long-serving bass player with Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, who happily guested for a bottle of Bourgogne' on one of the album's ten tracks.

Watch now the video for the first single No More Hesitatin'...

The nucleus of the band, Gibson Guitars-endorsed Parisian Vincent Martinez and New Jersey son Jansen Press, formed Carousel Vertigo purely out of a shared love of the classic rock music they both revelled and could play so well.  Although each came from a different culture and country, they were instantly united by the other's ability to express that music in different but complementary ways –“ and a dual-lead guitar partnership of virtuosity and instinct was born.  Riding above it all, Vincent's vocal – one moment a pure, hair-raising wail, the next soulful and sweetly emotive honey – establishes Carousel Vertigo as the real deal.

The best band you've never heard playing the greatest music you think you already know but don't.

Not yet…

Rock and roll is very much alive.
