MARCUS 'S/T' CANDY314

THIS ALBUM IS a truly a remarkable artefact. Originally issued in 1976 to little or no acclaim, the record, despite it striking cover art and incendiary contents, sank without trace until British music publication Sounds afforded the record a glowing lead review. Aficionados and avid fans of hard rock began a frantic search to obtain copies and were pleased to find that the praise was indeed well deserved. By then, however, the band had already spilt up, disillusioned by a lack of interest and receiving zero promotion.

It was an incredibly unfortunate set of circumstances as the album is a true classic, a mid seventies hard rock album with the reach and depth of a band that, without a doubt, should have risen to the very heights of success. Formed in Detroit by leader and vocalist Marcus Malone (a former member of Mitch Rider's Detroit Wheels), the group was discovered and brought to Los Angeles by 60s soul legend Ike Turner, who secured them a deal with United Artists Records.

Produced by Stuart Alan Love (Phoenix, Black Sheep) the album resonates with impressive depth and maturity. The music is both accomplished and bold, fusing the grand swagger of Aerosmith with the progressive heaviness of Deep Purple. Featuring three lead guitars soloing away in a triple attack formation, alongside intricately arranged material, the record boasts a bevy of classic cuts, including 'Black Magic', Salmon Ball', 'Pillow Stars' and 'Highschool Ladies Streetcorner Babies'. An incredible statement of intent from one of the world's best kept secrets and, sadly, greatest losses.

MAYDAY 'S/T' CANDY288

WE AT ROCK Candy are often asked to reissue rarities and obscurities. With that in mind we have recently turned our attention to a number of acts that do indeed deserve our full attention despite the fact that they barely registered a blip on the rock radar at the time of release. Mayday are a case in point, being a truly outstanding unit that offered a refreshing and compelling alternative to the mega selling acts of the day yet, for whatever reason, were criminally overlooked at the time.

Initially called Sun, and formed in the mid to late seventies, with their roots in Chicago but basing themselves in New York City, Mayday plugged themselves into Manhattan's burgeoning club scene, playing underground clubs such as CBGB's, Great Gildersleeves and Max's Kansas City. It was this live circuit that helped to toughen the band up, winning them the attention of an independent production company who bank rolled the start of their debut album and helped them to sign to industry leaders A&M records.

Issued in 1981, the album was received with glowing reviews and set in motion a dedicated following amongst fans of perfectly executed melodic hard rock blessed with interesting twists and turns. The album boasts a number of superbly written and performed tracks, highlighting Steve Johnstad's captivating voice (compared on occasion with Steve Perry) and the biting guitar work of Randy Fredrix. Biggest surprise on offer is their inspired and indeed rousing version of the Starz classic 'So Young So Bad'.

MAYDAY 'REVENGE' CANDY289

NEW YORK CITY has, over the years, been home to a number of great rock acts, but during the early eighties it was fast losing ground to its west coast geographical rival, Los Angeles. NYC, for all its bravado, was actually more enamoured by the burgeoning alternative and power pop scene, scratch below the surface though and you could find several hard rock acts storming through, sticking bravely to a diet of tough-guy guitar work and well written melodic songs. Step forward Mayday, one such example of the city's hard rock counter movement.

Based in NYC, but with roots in Chicago, Mayday's debut album, for the well-respected independent label A&M, certainly put them on the map, helping to earmark them as an outfit to watch. The label's belief carried forward to the recording of their second album, albeit with a slightly revised line up but still retaining key member's, guitarist and song writer Randy Fredrix and vocalist Steve Johnstad ' the dynamic duo's creativity reaching a new level of confidence.

Issued in 1982, 'Revenge' showcases the band sharpening their approach and toughening up their chops, but without sacrificing a well-honed sense of melody and execution. It's all credit to the band that some of the songs showcase quirky twists that help to elevate them beyond the competition and lend a contemporary sheen to their sound.

SPECIAL DELUXE COLLECTOR'S EDITION, FULLY REMASTERED SOUND, 12 PAGE FULL COLOUR BOOKLET, 3,500 WORD ESSAY ABOUT THE MAKING OF THE ALBUM, NEW INTERVIEWS AND ENHANCED ARTWORK.

BAD BOY 'THE BAND THAT MILWAUKEE MADE FAMOUS' CANDY311

GETTING A RECORD deal was not the easiest of tasks in the 1970s, especially if you were based in the mid-west of America with no real prospect of getting heard by industry big wigs at labels in New York or Los Angeles. There was no Internet, and telephone calls cost and arm and a leg. But, as the saying goes, there is no substitute for hard work, and by building a substantial local reputation, word soon spread that Bad Boy were a band fit for purpose.

Catching the ear of  producer Bob Brown, who conveniently also worked in artist relations for the respected United Artists label, Bad Boy soon found themselves signed and flown out to Los Angeles to record their debut album. Issued in 1977, the album boasts powerful riffs and memorable songs, the sort of thing that elevated Aerosmith, Ted Nugent and Kiss to superstar status during a time when rough and tumble hard rock was all the rage.

'The Band That Milwaukee Made Famous', may have been a bit of a mouthful at the time but, to those in the know, it made perfect sense, being a humorous parody of a famous advertising hook used by one of the many Beer breweries based in the city. The album sold reasonably well, even making the Billboard charts, but Bad Boy didn't become a house hold name. This album did, however, provide an opportunity for them to record an impressive follow up, 'Back To Back'.

SPECIAL DELUXE COLLECTOR'S EDITION, FULLY REMASTERED SOUND, 12 PAGE FULL COLOUR BOOKLET, 3,500 WORD ESSAY ABOUT THE MAKING OF THE ALBUM, NEW INTERVIEWS AND ENHANCED ARTWORK.

TRACK LISTING: 1. OVERTURE 2. SHAKE ME UP 3. DISCO 4. LAST ROCK AND ROLLER 5. I GOTTA MOVE 6. MINDLESS BABBLING 7. WATCHING YOU 8. MACHINES 9. I'VE HAD ENOUGH 10. THINKING OF YOU

BAD BOY 'BACK TO BACK' CANDY312

THERE'S NO DOUBT that the 1970s were a golden time for blues infused rock, but it was also a period where the competition for attention was cut throat. Sure, if an act caught a wave of approval then the sky was the limit, for the majority of acts, however, it was a struggle to keep afloat, despite the fact that regional radio play and venues were plentiful and welcoming.

For Milwaukee, Wisconsin based four piece Bad Boy the odds were stacked against them, even though they had secured a coveted record deal with the United Artists label and had already gained a foothold with a well-received debut album. Stepping back into the studio they were a far more worldly wise team, and they crafted a record that sat easily beside master craftsmen of the era such as Aerosmith, Derringer, Cheap Trick and Kiss.

Originally issued in 1978, 'Back To Back' made for solid listening, focusing on melodic catchy songs with rock solid riffs. Tracks such as 'I Just Wanna Love You' and the funk infused 'Keep It Up' leave no stone unturned in their quest to impress. But the big winners here are the rifftastic 'No Stopping Me Now', and 'Take My Soul'/'Out Of Control', a near eight minute epic of the highest grade. With a regional following remaining forever loyal, the band were hamstrung by a label that was focussing on lighter fare, leaving them to pursue their quest for success independently whilst continuing to cultivate a solid legacy.

We have some sad news to share with our fans today.
Eric Rivers has after long and faithful service decided to leave the band. We are obviously devastated to lose such an awesome guitar player and band member who is not only a founding member but has been a part of creating what H.E.A.T has grown to become over the years. There are no hard feeling between us and we will still be very good friends. We wish Eric Rivers the best of luck to pursue happiness in whatever way he chooses. He will be sorely missed.
The search for a replacement has already begun and we hope to bring you some good news about who will take on the part as guitar player as soon as possible.
// Erik, Jimmy, Jona, Crash

The following is a message from Eric in his own words:
”Its with a heavy heart I have decided to leave H.E.A.T. It's a decision that's been brewing inside me for a long time. Its hard to answer the question why I'm leaving, but I just feel done. It's time for me to get off the ride. And what a ride it has been!
Almost 10 years, five albums, countless tours all over the world... The thing that's been keeping me in it this long is you guys - the fans. Thank you so much for all your love and support through the years. I will look back on this ride with nothing but great, great memories, meeting and playing in front of you crazy fuckers all over the world.
To my four brothers in the band. Fuckin a. You guys are the best. You've been amazing in helping me through this and you will always be a big part of my life! No bad blood what so ever. And if there's something H.E.A.T has a history of, it's coming back stronger and better after something like this. I can't wait to see and hear what you guys come up with!
And the cool part about this is that I can finally go see a H.E.A.T show. See you front row!
Nu ska pappa ta en grögg!
Nothing but love,

After more than two decades of contributing with his voice and songwriting on studio albums, Finally it is time for APOLLO to deliver his first solo album. And it's has been a long road leading to "Waterdevils".

Apollo career started at the age of 14 when the young Apostolos from Swedish town Borås, inspired by bands like Kiss and Alice Cooper, and he started playing with various bands, as an aspiring guitarist.
“Not many wanted to be Vocalists back in those old days, everybody wanted to play the guitar, nobody wanted to sing. So I just made the decision to become a singer."
Apollo  joined his first bands Blazon and Craze at the age of 17. Craze released a single "Living In Sin" but the band disbanded shortly thereafter when Apollo left to do his military service in 1988. It took another eight years before Apollo recorded his first full album with the band Faith Taboo.

"We started out as a cover band, but I didn't want to waste time just playing other people's songs, so I had everybody get involved in writing songs for our self-financed album "Psycopath" [released in 1996]. The band continued playing local gigs, they eventually called it a day and Apollo joined the band Majestic.

His singing career took off and when he sang with bands and projects in a neverending stream: Time Requiem, Meduza, Sandalinas, and Evil Masquerade to mention but a few. Things about to start to happen in 2006.

Time Requiem were mixing their album in Studio Fredman in Gothenburg in late 2005, when studio owner and producer Fredrik Nordström introduced Apollo to a guitarist GUS G who was also working in his studio.

Fredrik said he wanted me to meet this Greek guy, he thought we would get along, cause we were both Greek. It clicked right away. Gus asked me to join his band Firewind, but I had to turn down the offer because I was studying at the time and didn't have time for another band. He asked again about six months later, and by that time I was done with my studies so we went for it. It was magic, it felt like it was finally the real deal and we were all on the same musical level."

The Firewind-guitarist was Gus G - who in 2009 landed the dream job in Ozzy Osbourne's band, replacing Zakk Wylde.
The years with Firewind definitely and finally put Apollo on the map. He recorded 4 albums with the band and toured with the likes of Y&T, Scorpions, Judas Priest and Whitesnake among others, playing big festivals such as Download, Graspop Metal Meeting, Sweden Rock Festival and more.

Apollo parted company with Firewind in January 2013 and decided to focus on Spiritual Beggars (w. guitarist Michael Amott, Arch Enemy) who he had joined in 2010 and fronted alongside of Firewind, and also started working on his solo debut. The coming two years were spent writing, recording and collaborating with friends from bands like King Diamond, Helloween, Gamma Ray, Arch Enemy, Grand Magus, Metalium, MasterPlan and many more.

"I originally wanted to release the material under a band name or as a project, but people kept saying it was about time that I go solo and step out as a solo artist. So I decided to take the plunge." "Waterdevils" is the result of Apollo's free musical spirit where he has liberated himself from all rules and just done whatever he wanted to do.

"I wanted to do this because it's fun and exciting, and also because I want to contribute to keeping classic rock alive! Waterdevils is a weather phenomenon. It's a small, weak whirlwind over water that's pretty rare. You never know where you'll see it or if you'll see it again. In a way it's a tribute to all of those who have contributed to this album. They showed up, unexpectedly and they might show up again, or maybe not, you just never know. Like water devils."

PROJECT NIGHTSCAPE Debut Album Available For Pre-Order

Pre-order Now to Receive Free Digital Copy of Tie-in Novel

Portland, Oregon, USA Imperiad Entertainment is pleased to announce the November 11 digital release and December 9 CD release of Project Nightscape’s debut album, To Sin Against Our Mercies.

Based on the series of supernatural thrillers by writer-film director David W. Edwards, this progressive hard rock concept album features the melodic guitar stylings of Grammy-nominee Tony Gaglio. Early reviewers have compared the music favorably to classic Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Rush. The record includes musical contributions from Vinny Appice (Dio), Mirabai Peart (Joanna Newsom’s band), Tobin Sprout (Guided by Voices) and Pete Trewavas (Marillion). The album’s story concerns an itinerant, nineteenth-century doctor who encounters a blind boy in communication with the dead.

The 13-track album is now available for previewing and pre-ordering from Project Nightscape’s Bandcamp page. Anyone who places an order before November 11 will receive a free PDF copy of the action-horror tie-in novel, The Alchemist & Azriel upon its release in early 2017. The book will explore the fate of the supernatural threat at the center of To Sin Against Our Mercies. Edwards’ last Nightscape novel was characterized by Kirkus Reviews as “entertaining, poignant, and heady, a thoroughly enjoyable thrill ride powered by jolts of philosophy.”

The songs on this collection reflect its tight symphonic design, complete with character-based musical themes or motifs. “Tony and I established the track sequencing at the conceptual stage in order to properly develop and incorporate recurring motifs,” Edwards said. “From the beginning, the album was conceived as an extended suite to ensure the diverse material added up to more than the sum of its parts.”

Tracks range from the haunting gospel-inflected rock of the first single, “(Living in) Sacred Time” and the prog-pop of “Only Reason” to the jazzy, off-kilter “Inmortuorum Memorias” and the galloping metal of “Occulted.” The climax of the record is a ten-minute plus ‘mini-epic,’ “Starlost,” that serves as a thematic coda to the main narrative. This song has it all: acoustic and electric guitars; real strings (cello, violin and viola); dueling male and female vocals; a variety of keyboard sounds, including Mellotron and Hammond B-3 organ; ripping keyboard and guitar solos (and duets); and complex but indelible vocal harmonies.

The sheer range of musical styles was both a challenge and a source of inspiration for Gaglio, the album’s sole guitarist and main songwriter. “We worked hard to make sure each track stood on its own merits and at the same time, contributed to a cohesive whole,” he said. “Attentive listeners will definitely be rewarded by the attention to detail. Many of the songs are linked through subtle motifs, some of which you may not hear so much as feel.”

An early mix of the album’s first single, “(Living in) Sacred Time,” debuted on September 9 as part of a free compilation CD distributed to opening night attendees of the sold out ProgPower USA festival in Atlanta. The song is now streaming in its entirety on Bandcamp. Key retail partners include Amazon, Bandcamp, CDBaby and iTunes.
