ANN WILSON Pays Homage On 'Immortal' Solo Album

ANN WILSON of HEART, one of rock’s most distinctive and powerful vocalists, will release her new solo album September 14 on BMG, marking her debut for the label. Fittingly titled IMMORTAL, the album features 10 musically diverse tracks that pay homage to some of the singer’s favorite songs and artists, all of whom have passed away in recent years and whose music poignantly lives on (the full track listing is below).

For the new release, ANN has teamed with original Heart producer Mike Flicker (Dreamboat AnnieMagazineLittle QueenDog and Butterfly and Bebe Le Strange, among others). Look for the iconic Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee to perform some of the album’s songs when she tours North America this summer with Jeff Beckand Paul Rodgers for the “Stars Align Tour” (see below for full upcoming tour itinerary). The songs will also be featured in ANN‘s first-ever solo television special (details TBA), taped this past April at the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles, IL, to coincide with the album’s release.

ANN chose the album title IMMORTAL after revealing some working titles early on in the project. “The original working titles evolved as the concept for the album evolved; a little bit at a time,” explains ANN. “As my understanding of what I had undertaken grew and clarified, I realized a larger truth; that the souls may have departed but the songs will forever be their resonances. These are the poets of our time and their expressions must be handed down. Poetry is lasting and elemental like carvings in rock.“

The finely etched tracks that comprise IMMORTAL cover a lot of musical ground, with many highlights including songs by Leonard Cohen (“A Thousand Kisses Deep”), Amy Winehouse (“Back to Black”), David Bowie (“I’m Afraid of Americans”), Lesley Gore (“You Don’t Own Me”) and Tom Petty (“Luna”). ANN says the criteria for choosing this collection of songs was easy. “First of all, I had to LOVE them! They had to be songs I could get inside of authentically as a singer. Lyrics are important to me but the most important thing is always the marriage of words and melody that makes the song magic!”

With sexism at the forefront of the national conversation, ANN says this did factor into the inclusion of “You Don’t Own Me.” “‘You Don’t Own Me’ was originally an early feminist anthem in the 1960’s and ’70’s. Since then the idea of self possession has grown to be more universal…This song is about refusing to be objectified and owned. By anyone.”

IMMORTAL includes some very special guests as well. “Warren Haynes plays on Tom Petty’s ‘Luna’ and ‘You Don’t Own Me,'” ANN reveals. “Ben Mink is featured on Leonard Cohen’s ‘A Thousand Kisses Deep’ and Amy Winehouse’s ‘Back to Black.’ They are both musicians and great people whom I admire. It’s always a pleasure and an honor to work with them. Their souls shine through on these songs!”

Producer Mike Flicker brings an important element to IMMORTAL. “Mike was the first producer to believe in me,” ANN says. “He was my first teacher in the studio and knows how to provide that special support needed to bring out my soul in the recording process. It is exciting to work with him for the first time since 1980. I have traveled many, many miles since then but the old feeling is still there and fresh on Immortal. He has fearlessly helped me bring my ideas to life once again and it’s been a great collaboration.”

The IMMORTAL track listing is as follows:

“A Different Corner” (George Michael)
“A Thousand Kisses Deep” (Leonard Cohen)
“Back to Black” (Amy Winehouse)
“Baker Street” (Gerry Rafferty)
“I Am the Highway” (Chris Cornell, Audioslave)
“I’m Afraid of Americans” (David Bowie)
“Life in the Fast Lane” (Joe Walsh, The Eagles) in honor of Glenn Frey
“Luna” (Tom Petty)
“Politician” (Cream) in honor of Jack Bruce
“You Don’t Own Me” (Lesley Gore)

Nancy Wilson of Heart and Liv Warfield Form New Band ROADCASE ROYALE

Categories:
News Feed
Los Angeles, CA — January 20, 2017 — Nancy Wilson, one of the founding members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group Heart, has teamed up with former Prince band member and R&B singer Liv Warfield to form a new super group called ROADCASE ROYALE.

The sound of ROADCASE ROYALE is muscular rock with some R&B/Blues and in depth ballads thrown in, reflecting the iconic sounds of both their respective bands. ROADCASE ROYALE’S debut song is available to stream now via the band’s Soundcloud page. The song, “Get Loud,” is a ROADCASE ROYALE original, and will debut January 20th immediately following Concert for America: Stand Up, Sing Out!, which will be livestreamed through Facebook. The song will also be featured at the Women’s March on Austin, TX (the largest ever gathering of Texas women) on January 21.

Joining Wilson (guitar) and Warfield (vocals) are lead guitarist Ryan Waters (the musical director for Liv’s solo work and Prince protégé) along with Heart members Chris Joyner (keys), Dan Rothchild (bass), and Ben Smith (drums). Each of the members’ musical talents shines in “Get Loud.” The song begins with a laid-back groove, providing a solid acoustic and electric foundation for Warfield’s vocals — all about getting loud and standing up for women’s equality. “Get Loud” blends this important message with the groups R&B and rock influences, resulting in a uniquely powerful track.

The band has recorded five new original songs as well as plans for a tour early in 2017. Wilson has said, ROADCASE ROYALE’s activity doesn’t mean Heart is going away. “ROADCASE ROYALE is a side project,”. she notes, “and not a replacement for Heart.” She also stated that the name ROADCASE ROYALE came to the group during a backstage meeting they had last year, and said “When I came up with the name ROADCASE ROYALE it was an interesting symbol to me since the big heavy duty road cases that our amps drums and guitars travel in are much like the musicians they accompany on the road. Strong and regal looking yet all scuffed up and dented, covered in funny stickers that tell the story of a crazy traveling circus.”
“It’s going to be fun to see our road cases with ROADCASE ROYALE stenciled on the side!” Wilson added.
More about ROADCASE ROYALE:
Led by former Prince collaborator Liv Warfield and Nancy Wilson, co-founder of Heart, ROADCASE ROYALE has a rich background in rock and R&B. Warfield, Wilson, and their bandmates bring their decades of experience from the upper echelon of the music industry to ROADCASE ROYALE, along with a renewed sense of direction and drive. Joining Wilson and Warfield are Warfield’s lead guitarist and musical director Ryan Waters and Heart veterans Dan Rothchild (bass), Ben Smith (Drums) and Chris Joyner (Keys). Each of these members shine in ROADCASE ROYALE with their various sensibilities creating the group’s sensitive, passionate, and driving rock and R&B sound.

Ann & Nancy Wilson Perform HEART Exam On 1985 Multi-Million Seller

Dallas, TX - July 12, 2013.  North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands  speak to Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Ann and Nancy Wilson about their five million plus seller 1985 Heart album on its thirtieth anniversary.

Heart's enduring career has no doubt been because of the resilient musical leadership of both singer/ songwriter Ann and guitarist/ singer Nancy Wilson, although it did not always appear that way.  The 'blood is thicker than water' cliche had proven to be true several times throughout their career, but perhaps never more than during the early 1980s. Ann and Nancy share with InTheStudio host Redbeard what led them to take the reins and ultimately to reinvent Heart.

'By 1981 we were already leading the band. We just came out and did it... The band was in a lot of turmoil, and we were the only ones who could be unified enough to lead the band.'  - Ann Wilson

'Right before the self-titled Heart album, we were without a record company and we were changing management... In the MTV era that we were in then, we put on the costumes and it was fun! Got out the flashpots, got the record company, got the budget, got the videos going and made sort of like a comeback, at a time when Heart's career was really flagging... We really lucked into some great people who helped us reinvent.'  - Nancy Wilson

That reinvention yielded hit after hit including 'What About Love?', 'Never', 'Nothing at All', 'If Looks Could Kill' and Heart's first # 1 single 'These Dreams'.

HEART '1985'/InTheStudio interview is available now to STREAM at: www.inthestudio.net/redbeards-blog/heart-heart-1985-nancy-wilson-ann-wilson/
