2015 Debut of UK Based AOR Event 'ROCKINGHAM Festival'

Release Year:
2015

ROCKINGHAM PRESS RELEASE ~ THERE’S A NEW AOR SHERIFF IN TOWN….

A major new festival is about to land in the UK this autumn. This new endeavour is all set to deliver twenty-two bands in total, including a band that hasn’t played a gig since ’83, six that have never played in the UK, nine that have never played the proposed venue and a further three that haven't been to the UK in over a decade.

Rockingham is all set to take place at Nottingham’s Rock City over the weekend of the 24th to 26th October. Alongside Rock City, Dave Herron has booked and assembled a stellar line up of melodic rock goodness that should guarantee a healthy turnout.
Having been a fan of the genre for many years, Herron is no stranger to the world of Melodic Rock; utilising his vast experience and contacts to put together a bold and exciting line up, but that’s not all as Dave Herron explains, “you can expect a few surprise guest appearances throughout the weekend.”

\With its roots in the past, but its eyes firmly on the future, Rockingham is primed to become a permanent fixture on the UK festival circuit for the foreseeable future.

LINE UP:

FRIDAY 23rd

TOM KEIFER
As part of Cinderella, Keifer should be familiar to any self-respecting rock fan. This is his first visit to the UK as a solo artist and anticipation is high. Expect a mix of Cinderella classics and solo material.

ECLIPSE
Alongside HEAT, Eclipse is riding high as part of the new breed of AOR. If you caught them in the UK recently, then you’ll know what to expect: High-octane hard rock, delivered by a frontman who knows how to handle an audience.

ROBIN BECK
Robin’s been no stranger to these shores in recent years, bringing a series of stunning shows to the UK last year. Robin’s last album was her finest since her debut and she’s currently at the pinnacle of her career.

ROBERT TEPPER
From Rocky to Cobra and beyond. The king of soundtracks will be among many acts making their UK debut at Rockingham. With Tepper, Bush and Peterik in attendance it really will be 80’s soundtrack heaven.

ROMEO’S DAUGHTER
They are the finest female fronted AOR act the UK has ever produced. As a live act they never fail to deliver and are sure to set the bar high.

SERPENTINE
A new singer and a bold new sound, Serpentine are out to prove that this is their definitive line up. Their “Circle Of Knives” album sees them producing the goods in the studio, so expect nothing else from their live performance.

SANTA CRUZ
Loud and proud, these Finnish riff masters will be the perfect festival openers. If Skid Row and the Gunners are your kinda bands, then make sure you’re down the front for these bad boys.

SATURDAY 24th

GOTTHARD
Despite the tragic event that saw the enigmatic Steve Lee lose his life, Gotthard have kept his memory alive by doing what they do best, tearing it up live. There are a few select bands from the last few years that garner such high praise from the AOR cognoscenti, Gotthard are one of them.

DAN REED NETWORK
If ever a band deserved to be lauded from high then Portland’s finest are that act. They’ve toured with Bon Jovi and The Stones and their recent Download performance was magical. In another world they would have been huge, so get ready to mix it up some twenty-two years after they last appeared at Rock City.

JIM PETERIK
Grammy award winner Jim Peterik will be accompanied by a full live band so expect a heavily laiden Survivor set with classic songs also thrown in from JP’s 40+ year writing career , Ides Of March, 38 Special, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Cheap Trick, Sammy Hagar and REO Speedwagon to name but a few.

ELECTRIC BOYS
Roll out the Funk ‘o’ metal carpet and get ready to ride it all the way back to the late eighties as Sweden’s finest exponents of the genre take to the stage. They could be the festivals silent assassins, so take nothing for granted and miss them at your peril.

LAST AUTUMN’S DREAM
They maybe a vehicle for Michael Erlandsson these days, but take nothing away from LAD as they’ve an impressive back catalogue to draw from.

VEGA
Always a popular attraction, Vega is the great white hope of the AOR world. With three CDs worth of quality material to choose from, the only problem will be picking the right set.

CARE OF NIGHT
Swedish soft rock newcomers, Care Of Night, delivered a fine debut earlier in the year, the kind that the Westcoast genre was built on. If you’ve had a heavy night after the previous evening’s entertainment, then these boys will be the perfect openers.

SUNDAY 25th

DOKKEN
Back in ‘85/6 Dokken were riding the crest of a wave over in America. Their first four albums are rightly regarded as some of the finest of the era. They’ll be the perfect end to a fabulous weekend.

DAVID GLEN ISLEY, ALAN KRIGGER and CRAIG GOLDY OF GUIFFRIA
A Guiffria less, Guiffria? Well it’s done House Of Lords no harm for the last ten years. With David Glen Isley, Alan Krigger and Craig Goldy in attendance, they’ll be sure to do you right.

VALENTINE
Ex Zinatra keyboard player Robbie Valentine makes his UK debut as a solo artist and his brand of flamboyance is sure to light up the evening.

STAN BUSH
Backed by the rock band, Bailey, Stan Bush makes a welcome return to the UK for his first visit in over a decade. You can expect a jam packed set list, one that will cover all the bases.

ROYAL HUNT
The last time Royal Hunt appeared at a UK festival they damn near stole the weekend. A pompous, bombastic approach will have them appealing to many. With DC Cooper at the helm, a good time is almost guaranteed.

AMMUNITION
Having just stolen the show at the recent Vasby Rock festival, this collaboration between Age Sten Nillsen (Wig Wam) and Erik Martensson (Eclipse) is sure to be a must watch occasion. Their new album is one of this year’s highlights, after this performance you’ll understand why.

ISSA
AORs most popular pin up girl has just released what is arguably her best album. Her recent live performances have seen her in good form; this performance should be no exception.

NO HOT ASHES
An exclusive for the Melodicrock.com readers and that’s the addition of Irelands finest to the bill. Fresh from supporting FM on their recent UK tour, No Hot Ashes will deliver a pleasant set of jaunty AOR.

I think you’ll all agree that Rockingham Festivals AOR credentials have been fully endorsed by having such an array of talent on show. Fans and ticket buyers would also be wise to watch out for announcements of official pre and after shows in the coming months via the festivals Facebook page.
Dave Herron sums up the impending weekend perfectly, “It’s gonna be one hell of a party, with plans for 2016 already taking shape.”

The following three new Rock Candy titles are available now from www.rockcandyrecords.com for a discounted price including postage to anywhere in the world for the next two weeks ending on May 3rd.

DOKKEN 'BACK FOR THE ATTACK' CANDY266

THE FACT THAT Dokken were never the most tightly bonded quartet has been well documented. Internal rancour and persistent inter-band feuding seemed the order of the day (particularly between vocalist Don Dokken and guitarist George Lynch) yet the by-product of such friction seemed to stir the band to amazingly creative highs as this, their fourth studio, album firmly demonstrates. Issued to huge acclaim, to a fan base already primed by the platinum success of their previous album ‘Under Lock And Key’, this album is generally regarded as their most accomplished work.

Re-recording took place over a ten month stretch, with a total of five state-of-the-art Los Angeles studio being utilised. Originally issued in late 1987, and produced by Neil Kernon (Autograph, Queensryche, Kansas), ‘Back For The Attack is a consummate example of late 80s melodic hard rock, stuffed to the rim with all the right moves and grooves. Don Dokken’s instantly identifiable vocals and George Lynch’s guitar solos, soak the songs with enough vim and vigour to elevate them to classic status.

Tracks such as ‘Burning Like A Flame’, ‘Heaven Sent’, ‘Prisoner’ and ‘Dream Warriors’, the theme song to the hit horror movie ‘Nightmare On Elm Street 3’, are some of the best tracks the band ever recorded. It’s sad to note that the band’s final demise started almost immediately upon completion of this album, leaving the hard rock community without one of the best acts of the 80s.

Special Deluxe Collector’s Edition, one bonus track, fully remastered sound, 16 page full colour booklet, features new interview with Don Dokken, 3,500 word essay and enhanced artwork.

TRACK LISTING: 1. KISS OF DEATH 2. PRISONER 3. NIGHT BY NIGHT 4. STANDING IN THE SHADOWS 5. HEAVEN SENT 6. MR. SCARY 7. SO MANY TEARS 8. BURNING LIKE A FLAME 9. LOST BEHIND A WALL 10. STOP FIGHTING LOVE 11. CRY OF THE GYPSY 12. SLEEPLESS NIGHTS 13. DREAM WARRIORS BONUS TRACK: 14. BACK FOR THE ATTACK

TRAPEZE 'HOT WIRE' CANDY264

TRAPEZE WERE INITIALLY one of the most promising and, later on, revered bands to have emerged from the UK during the 1970s. They blasted their way from obscurity to international acclaim, then, just as stardom beckoned, the carpet was pulled from under their feet when in 1973 vocalist and front man Glenn Hughes opted to leave the band, hitching his wagon to hard rock grandees Deep Purple. The general consensus was that Trapeze would not be able to carry on after such a catastrophic blow yet, against all the odds, they dusted themselves down, retrenched and got back in the ring to fight another day.

Choosing to expand the band’s line-up, founding members guitarist Mel Galley and drummer Dave Holland opted to recruit fellow Midlanders, bassist Pete Wright and second guitarist Rob Kendrick. Together they took the Trapeze blueprint of funky hard rock and injected it with a far more hook-laden sheen. Showing real growth the band’s sound evolved incrementally, with Mel Galley taking on lead vocals, there were now songs that wouldn’t be out of place in the esteemed company of mid seventies US arena acts such as Derringer, Montrose and Foghat.

Originally issued in 1974 and produced by veteran blues champion Neil Slaven (Savoy Brown, Chicken Shack, Stray) at Island Records Basing Street studios in London, the album contains a stellar selection of hard-hitting tracks, including ‘Back Street Love’, ‘Wake Up, Shake Up’ and the album centrepiece ‘Midnight Flyer’, an impressive and hard hitting funk fuelled track built to blow your mind.

Special Deluxe Collector’s Edition, fully remastered sound, 12 page full colour booklet, features new interviews, 3,500 word essay and previously unseen photos.

TRACK LISTING: 1. BACK STREET LOVE 2. TAKE IT ON DOWN THE ROAD 3. MIDNIGHT FLYER 4. WAKE UP, SHAKE UP 5. TURN IT ON 6. STEAL A MILE 7. GOIN’ HOME 8. FEEL IT INSIDE

TRAPEZE 'S/T' CANDY265

PER CAPITA THE British Midlands produced an extraordinary amount of heavy rock bands during the late 60s and early 70s. Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Slade and half of Led Zeppelin spring immediately to mind, but of serious note are Trapeze, the group that first introduced us to the extraordinary talent of vocalist and bassist Glenn Hughes. Developing a fervent fan following, especially in the USA, this killer power trio specialised in a brilliant mash-up of hard rock and funk. All was going swimmingly until Hughes was purloined in 1973 by rock behemoths Deep Purple.

Refusing to succumb to defeat, Trapeze regrouped, this time adding two new members to fill the void left by Hughes whilst founding member Mel Galley assumed lead vocal duties. ‘Hot Wire’, the resultant album, was an impressive statement, sending out an unequivocal message that the band was far from spent. Indeed, their stature in the US and especially Texas, was further enhanced with intensive gigging and chart success. For their fifth album (confusingly self titled) the band continued their musical assault, unleashing a record that was more consistent with arena rock of the mid seventies.

Released in 1976, produced by Steve Smith (Back Street Crawler, Rough Diamond and Detective) and recorded in London at Island Studios (mixed by an uncredited Eddie Kramer), the record showcases defiant swagger, and riffs to die for. It even contains two songs featuring Glenn Hughes who had remained a staunch supporter of the band.

Special Deluxe Collector’s Edition, fully remastered sound, 12 page full colour booklet, features new interviews, 3,500 word essay and previously unseen photos.

TRACK LISTING: 1. STAR BREAKER 2. IT’S ALRIGHT 3. CHANCES 4. THE RAID 5. ON THE SUNNY SIDE OF THE STREET 6. GIMMIE GOOD LOVE 7. MONKEY 8. I NEED YOU 9. SOUL STEALER 10. NOTHING FOR NOTHING

DON DOKKEN and GEORGE LYNCH Dispute 'Breaking The Chains'

Artist:
Tuesday, January 6, 2015

Podcasts & Radio

On recent episode of THE CLASSIC METAL SHOW, guitarist George Lynch and vocalist Don Dokken have traded barbs regarding their debut release in Dokken, BREAKING THE CHAINS. On the December 6th edition of THE CLASSIC METAL SHOW, Lynch was asked about which album he wishes he could take out of his catalog, to which he answered BREAKING THE CHAINS. Below is what Lynch had to say:

GEORGE LYNCH: I was going to say BREAKING THE CHAINS, quite honestly.

CLASSIC METAL SHOW: Really? You don't like BREAKING THE CHAINS?

GEORGE LYNCH: I did like it when we originally recorded it, but then (Don) Dokken got ahold of it and destroyed it. He basically sent us home from Europe and said, "OK guys, we're done. I'm just going to stay back and hang out with my girlfriend." I was thinking, "OK." What he did was he stayed in the studio when we were gone and had his way with the record, which was (to) pump up all the vocals, take all my guitars out. Destroy the mix. It just sounded weak and wimpy. It just killed it. It was actually pretty muscular and pretty tough when we were in the studio. It was down in the basement at Dierk's studio in Germany. The Scorpions were upstairs. Rory Gallagher was upstairs. These guys wanted to hear what was going on, so they would bring down the guitar player from Scorpions and Rory. They would sit there. I was so proud of my guitar tracks. Me and Michael Wagoner were holed up there. We'd board the place up. We wouldn't let anybody in. I had a 24 track tube machine and an MC500 board. I had one of Richie Blackmore's old cabinets and a Rangemaster treble booster and my Tiger guitar. It sounded so good. It was the first record I'd ever done, really, so we were committed to making a statement. Quite honestly, the sound was just unbelievable. Then when it was all done, he did what he did to it and he killed it. It's very hard for me to listen to because of that, because I knew what it was and nobody will ever hear that unfortunately.

Vocalist Don Dokken appeared on January 3rd edition of THE CLASSIC METAL SHOW, and was asked about Lynch's claims that Don stayed behind and remixed the record behind his back. Don's response is below:

CLASSIC METAL SHOW: We talked to George (Lynch) a month ago, and he said that with BREAKING THE CHAINS, you stayed behind in Germany and remixed the record behind his back.

DON DOKKEN: That's a typical George Lynch statement. No, it wasn't Bob (Ludwig, engineer). I love that he says, "behind his back". I guess George forgot that when we did BREAKING THE CHAINS, he wasn't in the band. For the record...George...what is he smoking? He must be smoking something.  When I did BREAKING THE CHAINS, it was a solo record deal. George was not in the band. Mick was not in the band. Juan Crocier's picture is on the album, but he didn't play on it. Peter Baltes did because Juan missed the deadline to get to Germany. I had Peter play the bass tracks. It was a solo album, and the album came out originally in Germany, and it was called "Don Dokken BREAKING THE CHAINS". I have a copy. It's a picture of me on the cover and it says "Don Dokken". Now, George...I asked him to be in the band. He said no. I asked Mick if he wanted to be in the band. He said no. They were going to do something else. They were going to do Exciter. So for him to say "behind our back", he was paid $2500 to play on the record and that's it. He had nothing to do with Dokken. He wasn't in the band. He'd just come to Germany. We did a little tour. I paid him. He went back. He thought he was going to join Ozzy. That didn't work out. So he basically had nowhere to go, no band, and he was broke. That;'s when he came back and said, "I want to be in the band", because Mick had decided to come and play with me. To say that I did anything "behind his back", I don't know what that means because he wasn't in the band. He had nothing to do with Dokken. The guy is high.

SWEDEN ROCK FEST Adds DOKKEN And More...

Thursday, December 4, 2014
Categories:
Tour News
Another ten acts confirmed for the Sweden Rock Festival!

Previously, 38 acts have been announced for next year's Sweden Rock Festival. Here is another ten:

Legendary guitarist Slash, whose latest album "World on fire" went to #1 in the Swedish charts a few weeks ago, will perform at Sweden Rock for the first time next summer. And naturally, he is bringing vocalist extraordinaire Myles Kennedy (also in Alter Bridge) and his cohorts in The Conspirators. Expect the best Slash songs along with classics by both Guns n' Roses and Velvet Revolver in the setlist!

Dokken was one of the big bands of the 80s, with an influential blend of classic hard rock and melodies á la what some refer to as hair metal. The band has not played Sweden Rock since 2001, so it's about time they return. Notably, singer Don Dokken, drummer Mick Brown and demon guitarist Jon Levin are joined by the celebrated singer Mark Boals, known for his singing with Yngwie Malmsteen and Royal Hunt among others... as the bands bassist!

Hardcore Superstar from Gothenburg have been one of Sweden's most popular hard rock bands for years. Their latest Sweden Rock appearance was marred by heavy rain and although most of their audience persisted, they are well worth a new shot.

In 1998, a new band featuring members from Katatonia, Opeth and Edge Of Sanity was formed in Stockholm. They took the name Bloodbath and quickly became connoiseurs' faves, and all but mythical since they hardly ever performed live. Earlier this year, their fourth album "Grand Morbid Funeral", featuring new vocalist Nick Holmes (Paradise Lost) was released and their Sweden Rock appearance will be their only in Sweden this summer.

Pat Travers is a Canadian hard rock legend. He made his debut in 1976 and instantly established his style: fundamentally blues based hard rock spiced with unorthodox rhythms and unabashed pop melodies. On his later works, blues is the predominant influence, with the characteristic Travers guitar sound fully noticeable.

Swiss outfit Eluveitie is one of the most successful folk metal bands today. Their sound mixes melodic death metal (Gothenburg style) with Celtic folk music, featuring traditional instruments like bagpipe, violin and miscellaneous flutes and pipes. In 2015 they make their SRF debut, and their only Swedish performance next summer.

Refuge is in fact the reunited 1988-1994 line-up of German heavy/power metal icons Rage: Peavy Wagner (vocals/bas), Manni Schmidt (guitar, ex-Grave Digger) and Chris Eftimiadis (drums). The trio reunites to perform songs exclusively from what some consider the best period in the history of Rage, and albums like "Perfect man", "Secrets in a weird world", "Trapped" and "Missing link". The name Refuge is used since the current version of Rage, front man Peavy's day job, remains active.

Thin Lizzy leader Phil Lynott (RIP) called keyboardist Darren Wharton the band's most talented member ever. Since 1985, the same Darren Wharton fronts Dare - originally a melodic hard rock band which has gradually turned towards a more ethereal and Celtic sound. Next spring will see the release of the eighth Dare studio album, shortly before them returning to Sweden Rock.

Dan Hylander earned his place in Swedish rock history as the leader of Raj Montana band. When the group was disbanded in 1984, Dan Hylander continued as a solo artist and producer for artists like Totta Näslund and Tomas Ledin. In 2011 he made a comeback album and next year he makes his Sweden Rock debut - a suitably rocking setlist has been promised.

Yesterday we also announced Swedish band Egonaut for the Nemis Stage!

Longer biographies on all the bands, other information and tickets can be found at www.swedenrock.com.

The Sweden Rock Festival is held in Sölvesborg on June 3rd-6th 2015. Tickets are available.

On the November 8th edition of THE CLASSIC METAL SHOW, Dokken vocalist Don Dokken announced that vocalist/bassist Mark Boals (Yngwie J. Malmsteen / Ted Nugent) has been named as the new bassist of Dokken. During the conversation, Dokken explained how Boals came into the band, as well as the factors that led to his decision to replace former bassist Sean McNabb (Great White / Quiet Riot / Sons Of Anarchy). The statement can be heard here - http://youtu.be/l0FNm873eYg

Here is a transcript of the conversation:

Don Dokken - Sean (McNabb) is doing acting and solo projects and other bands.  Sean's a very motivated guy and has got a lot of stuff going on, but I need a bass player that wants to be in Dokken...not to be in Dokken to promote himself, if you understand.  There was a time when I asked him to turn down because he was crushing everybody on stage with the bass volume. I went over and asked him to turn down. He didn't. So I went over and turned the amp down. He walked back to the amp and turned it back up. Now, you don't do that in Dokken. You don't do that in any band. If you do that in Whitesnake or Priest or anybody...if you do that as a hired gun and you go up and the lead singer tells you to turn it down, and he turns you down and you go back and turn it back up, you'd be on a bus taking a slow Greyhound home. So that was kind of the last straw for that. I understand. Like Sean said, he was promoting himself. I said, "well, this is called Dokken, not McNabb". Sean's a great guy. I love him to pieces. He's a good guy. We had five or six that we played together. It was great.

Don Dokken - But I really felt that in Dokken, we were missing what we're famous for. That's the harmonies. It's hard to replace Jeff Pilson. Jeff Pilson - he plays with a pick, which I like. I don't like people that play with their fingers. It's not the same. I like Peter Baltes type bass players who play with a pick, and Sean doesn't. So it didn't have a lot of "attack". I needed a really killer singer that was as accomplished as Jeff Pilson. He was sorely missed, you know.

Don Dokken - So I meet Mark Boals, who's played with Ted Nugent. He did four albums with Yngwie Malmsteen and he's a great lead singer. I didn't really ask him if he wanted to play in Dokken because I figured that he's a lead singer and that's what he does. So we had a gig a couple of months ago, and he was doing those acoustic gigs with me, and he said, "I play bass". So I said, "let's play a show together and see how it goes". So I rehearse with Mark on vocals and Mike and Me, and it sounded amazing. As you see on the internet, people go, "I saw Dokken and the harmonies were awesome." So I said, "do you want to be the bass player?" He said, "Yep", and I said, "OK, you're in."

Don Dokken - So that's it. It wasn't like Sean was fired or anything. It's just that Sean's got his solo stuff going on. I think he was doing some stuff with Sons Of Anarchy, and he's got other projects going on and other groups he plays in. I just thought...I need a bass player to say what I need to hear, and that was, "I just want to be in Dokken". That's what Mark said. "I'm not trying to promote myself. I'm happy not to be the lead singer. I'm happy to back you up, and if you can't hit all those high notes you used to when you were young, I can take care of that." So, it's awesome, and he's a super nice guy.

SWEET/LYNCH - A 4-Track Preview Of Debut Album

Vocalist Michael Sweet (Stryper) and guitarist George Lynch (Dokken, Lynch Mob) have teamed up for SWEET/LYNCH, an album designed by Frontiers Records CEO Serafino, which is due for release early in 2015.
I’ve been fortunate enough to preview 4 tracks from the upcoming album and can’t speak highly enough of the tracks!

Both Lynch and Sweet impress the hell out of me on these tracks and the backing band of James Lomenzo (Megadeth, White Lion, Black Label Society) and drummer Brian Tichy (S.U.N., Whitesnake) means that if these four tracks are anything to go by, all the songs written for this album are going to be hammered home by this ultra-powerful rhythm section.

Sweet just sounds extraordinarily good on these songs. And Lynch is shredding and riffing like a man possessed. This is something big to look forward to.

Briefly – the four tracks I have heard are:

The Wish – A brilliant, rousing hard rocker with a thumping beat and an instant guitar riff, and a melodic vocal driven chorus that isn’t huge, but is immediately stored in the memory bank for endless repeating in your head later. And Lynch gets to display the best of his guitar work during a decent length solo.

Like A Dying Rose – An even better chorus on this one. The beat isn’t as intense or as fast as The Wish, but the chorus is huge and delivers a sound mix of everything that made Dokken and Stryper Platinum sellers. A big big vocal!

Love Stays – A slow, groove orientated ballad with a direct, impactful chorus and some classy guitar playing throughout.

Time Will Tell – Less intense than the other tracks, but more uptempo, adding good variety to the 4 tracks previewed. Another strong, harmony filled chorus and some choppy riffing.

A 90-second preview of another track Divine can be heard here: http://www.chirb.it/eKcwes

And you can hear just how awesome the track Time Will Tell sounds right here: http://audio.chirbit.com/michaelhsweet_1406294226.mp3

Stay tuned for more preview samples and updates on SWEET/LYNCH.
