This will be a shorter review than what it should have been had I reviewed this album when it was originally released. But…it’s never too late to discover or to be reminded of great music and this IS great music!
This all-star Swedish band is fronted by former Wig Wam vocalist Age Sten Nilsen along with Erik Martensson on guitars and production plus his Eclipse band mate Robban Bäck on drums.
Hal Patino rounds out the group on bass plus Lasse Finbråthen from Wig Wam on keyboards.

Let’s not beat around the bush – if you own Eclipse, you need this. If you own any Wig Wam album, you need this. If you own anything by Erik Martensson, you need this.
This is big budget, big sounding, big melodic hard rock with guitars, keyboards and hooks everywhere you look.
Age puts a very positive step forward for his first release outside Wig Wam; in fact, he comes close to releasing the best thing he’s ever done and a long way clear of the last couple of Wig Wam albums.

Highlights are plentiful – the stomping hard driving Silverback; the anthemic glory of Give Me A Sign; the mid-tempo harmony filled Shanghaied; the swagger and attitude of the rocking Tie Me Down; and then there’s the entry for song of the year Wild Card. What a blazing anthemic slice of AOR heaven!
The big bluesy ballad Heart’s Not In It is another highlight and Strung Out closes the album with an energetic blast.
The bonus track for some territories is the anthemic Sucker For Anything – essential if you can find it – it’s one of the album’s best tracks!

If you didn’t already pick up on it – this album is BIG. It’s a big, loud, anthemic, dirty and melodic rock n roll record with a touch of AOR/melodic rock/hard rock and glam.
It’s Swedish, it’s good. You need this.

Greece's Rockpages.gr did an exclusive interview with the frontman of ECLIPSE, Erik Martensson. Among other topics, Martensson talked about the future of the band and the possibility of releaing new material next year. Here's the excerpt:

Rockpages.gr: Compared to your usual 4-year gap between studio albums, this one took only 2 ½ years…was it an easier process, this time, for you?
Erik Martensson: We used to release albums not so often because I was doing so many other things and I didn’t have so much time. I did three albums with W.E.T. and all this work with other artists, we decided that we should focus on Eclipse. It’s now or never! We are not getting younger so the next album is not gonna be released in four years. I believe that we will start writing new songs during the winter.

Perfection! I could listen to Erik Martensson sing and Magnus Henriksson play guitar all week long. Eclipse delivered one of the great melodic rock albums with Are You Ready To Rock, building on the sound their first two albums established.
Then in 2012 they turned it up a notch for Bleed & Scream, the sound heavier, the sonic impact of the production even more powerful. I rated it their best album ever and gave them a perfect 100.
If I could go to 101 I’d do so, as this album is even better. In every way.

There is just so much joy in listening to this album. This is everything I love about melodic hard rock. Monster production; designed to be played at stupid volumes; intricate; brilliant songs that evoke emotion and adrenaline; musical performances that blow your mind and vocals that are just perfectly crafted for this type of music.
I really have to single Erik out here for his out-of-this-world vocal performance. He’s always been a great singer, but this album has to launch him into the annals of the legends. Yeah, I know I’m hyperventilating, but they really are that good.

And the songs – so damn likable and so amazingly catchy.

Armageddonize is the perfect mix of the melodic side of Are You Ready To Rock with the power and intensity of Bleed And Scream and is undoubtedly the band’s best album to date.

I Don't Wanna Say I'm Sorry - After a brief build up, we are away with one of the catchiest hard rockers that Eclipse has delivered yet. It has all the energy and sonic impact of Bleed & Scream, but the chorus is a monster AOR anthem. The riffs run fast, the power unmistakable. Erik Martensson sounds amazing and Magnus slays on guitar. The rhythm section is just as powerful as the sonically brilliant last album.
The opening track runs straight into the even heavier Stand On Your Feet. The verse features some mighty vocals before a high impact chorus blasts through. The riffing is furious and the drumming impeccable. And it's as catchy as hell once again.
The Storm starts with an acoustic guitar before the song literally explodes with part of the chorus hook. The power is immense and Erik’s vocals are simply unbelievable. A tense verse builds to a huge chorus that just powers along. Simply glorious! Impossible to get out of your head afterwards.
Blood Enemies starts with a long slow bluesy guitar solo, the tension builds to an explosive burst of energy where the track goes full throttle, one of the heaviest Eclipse tracks yet. Once again Magnus shreds while Erik almost blows his voice with a scream. That aspect of the song is one of the album highlights, but then the awesome chorus takes it over the top. Once again, pure hard rock perfection.
Wide Open is simply one of the best songs Eclipse has ever written. Ever. It’s fricken glorious. I can’t get enough of it. A furious beat, a melodic verse, rampaging guitars and big vocals…and then that chorus. Wow. Wow. Wow.

Live Like I'm Dying is the album’s big ballad and what a monsterous slice of melodic moodiness this is. The slow burner builds from a restrained start, to a huge epic finish with big everything – guitars, vocals and beat. An epic power hard rock ballad. Great guitar solo! Perfection again!
The intro to Breakdown reminds me a little of Blue Murder’s brilliant Jelly Roll and the track has a certain bluesy groove. At first you think ‘oh, the chorus isn’t really there’, but then it appears and all is well with the world. Another powerful vocal and a left turn for the album in general, it provides a good change of pace.
The album returns to the script with the straight forward, double time rocker Love Bites. This is another Eclipse classic with a very melodic verse driven by a frantic beat and then a simple, but utterly infectious chorus. Killer song.
Caught Up In That Rush is another high energy, guitar heavy rocker with similar characteristics to the rest of the album – pounding rhythm, melodic, yet powerful vocals and a killer harmony filled chorus. These guys are just fecking brilliant.
One Life – My Life is somewhat less sonically bombastic, but equally as engaging. A moody verse and an angst filled heavier chorus. It’s melody and power all the way.
All Died Young closes the album, not with a ballad, but with one of the heaviest and fastest tracks of the album. Take no prisoners as the double kick drum goes into overdrive. A simple, but effective chorus and riffs galore!

At 42 minutes and 11 songs, this is the perfect length for an album packed with quality songs.
It begs to be played again once completed, leaving the listener wishing for more, but secretly happy that every track is a classic and at no point is there any let up in energy or quality.
Eclipse is one of several bands out of Sweden that just “get it”.
The American artists and others around the world need to sit up and pay attention to what is being done there, because albums like this are creating a legacy of music for fans that is close to unbeatable.

Stand up and take a bow guys. This is a classic album that demands to be purchased. It has been in high rotation (in fact, almost constant rotation) for me since early December and shows no sign of being swapped out any time soon.

ECLIPSE Unleash 'Armageddonize' February 20 via Frontiers

ECLIPSE anticipated new album “Armageddonize” out on Frontiers Music Srl in February

Stockholm-based Hard Rockers ECLIPSE will release their fifth album “Armageddonize” on February 20th in Europe and February 24th in North America via Frontiers Music Srl. Recorded and produced by the band’s main songwriter and singer Erik Mårtensson and lead guitarist Magnus Henriksson, this new release sees the quartet ready to unleash 11 monster slices of melodic, yet hard-hitting, Rock on their ever growing fan base!

In the second half of 2014, ECLIPSE teamed up again to write their new studio album. The bar was set high and the initial goal was to top their latest album and the result was achieved brilliantly with the aptly titled “Armageddonize,” an album where the band rocks from start to finish like there is no tomorrow!

Says guitarist Magnus Henriksson: "No ECLIPSE fan will be disappointed. I guarantee that! Eclipse fans are very open minded and have always embraced the fact that this band is constantly evolving for the better. We have some surprises on ´Armageddonize´ that the fans might not expect. We became better songwriters on each album we did and Erik on this one sings better than ever. It´s incredible how he keeps getting better. I thought we had heard the best from him, but no. You´ll be surprised to hear how damn good he sings!"

With “Armageddonize,” ECLIPSE are showing that they are not anymore the brightest hope for Melodic Hard Rock music, but a truly solid and hard as a rock reality. They are still young, ambitious and full of energy. ECLIPSE music is not a revival, and it’s not nostalgic. Still… it’s by far the best you can have today if you love rock music with energy, great songs, and want to hear a band that has the ambition to be on top of the world!

With the release of their fourth album "Bleed And Scream", ECLIPSE gained a solid reputation and a steady following with this album that took their melodic Hard Rock roots in a more contemporary direction. Producer and main songwriters Erik Mårtensson and Magnus Henriksson strongly improved their skills by writing and producing a vast amount of bands and projects, from the successful W.E.T. albums (together with singer Jeff Scott Soto and Robert Säll from Work of Art) to Toby Hitchcock, Giant, Jimi Jamison, Dalton, Adrenaline Rush just to name a few. This has gained Mårtensson a reputation as one of the top producers/songwriters in this genre today.

Concludes Magnus: "We started as a band with all kinds of influences, but I think on our third release ´Are you ready to rock´, we started to work more on the songwriting and the ´ECLIPSE´ sound finally took its shape. I think you can hear that most distinctly in the song ´How to mend a broken heart´. That style of songwriting is very Eclipse and it rubbed off a lot on the W.E.T. sound as well, particularly on songs like: ´One love´ and ´Walk away´. On ´Armageddonize´ our style is chiseled out and it sounds more Eclipse than ever. We´ve got our own unique sound now. No other band sounds like Eclipse today and we wanna see where we can take this band. I know we´ve got so much more in us. The sonic blast is here to stay!!"

ECLIPSE – Armagedonize Looks Set To Deliver in February

ECLIPSE – Armagedonize Looks Set To Deliver in February

Swedish rockers Eclipse will release their next album Armagedonize via Frontiers Records in February.

I’ve just been delivered 4 songs from the album to preview:

Stand On Your Feet – This commercial rocker has an immediately likable melody and hook and packs a punch while still delivering on those hooks and a strong chorus.

The Storm – Starts with an acoustic guitar before bursting to life with that Eclipse power encased in the last album, but the melodic feel of Are You Ready To Rock. Another really good chorus too.

Live Like I’m Dying – Epic heavy ballad with a guitar tone reminiscent of WET’s Comes Down Like Rain. Another full-class, intense Eclipse rock ballad.

Love Bites – High energy rocker with a chorus that’s simple, but an instantly likeable and infectious energy. In fact, I’d go as far to say that it is utterly contagious with a 100% infection rate.

And these are the first 4 songs I’ve heard from the band’s upcoming album ‘Armagedonize’.

If these songs are anything to go by, Eclipse will have another sure-fire winner on their hands in the same kind of sonic style as Bleed And Scream and Are You Ready To Rock MMXIV

If there is one thing I immediately pick up it is the strength of Erik Martensson’s vocals, which just seem to be getting better and better.
Can't wait to hear more. Stay tuned...

What’s 25 years between friends? Swedish AOR legends return with an album that sounds like it was recorded as the natural follow up to 1989’s Injection album.
This is one for loyal Dalton fans who have waited all these years. Straight out of the Scandi 80s AOR playbook, Pit Stop is like a time capsule of glorious keyboards, fluffy AOR songs and big vocals.
Production is really impressive – what else would Erik Martensson deliver? The mix is beautiful and clear and gives keyboard, vocals and guitars the same 80s balance without sounding dated.

Ready Or Not might be a heavier album opener, but it’s the glorious hands in the air anthem Hey You that throws the listener back to 1985.
Don’t Tell Me Lies is keyboard heaven with a punchy mid-tempo rock ballad chorus with Follow Your Dreams equally as sentimental.
Up & Down fires up the guitars and the punchy rhythm section once again for a blast of high energy melodic rock, seamlessly followed by Bad Love.
One Voice is another slide of glorious 80s AOR with keyboards and vocals in full flight. Erik Martensson joins in the writing credits for this one.
Here We Are has to be one of the best AOR anthems of 2014. Melodic bliss here as vocals and harmonies and a rousing chorus all defy gravity.
Something For The Pain is equally as anthemic but a little more guitar driven and a faster tempo.
TGIF is a rousing, jazzy, rocked up closer.

Some albums have that 80s feel, updated with a contemporary production; this album sounds as if it was written and recorded in the late 80s. And that’s a positive comment. It’s a real throw back to where the band left off and an album to be enjoyed by fans of the pure 80s Scandi-AOR sound.

Product: Ammunition - Shanghaied

Age Sten Nilsen is picking up where his former band Wigwam left off. Penning new rock anthems with Erik Mårtensson (Eclipse/W.E.T) in Stockholm since October 2013.  When Wigwam surprisingly decided to call it a day after 13 years, Age Sten soon formed his own band, recording the new songs in the vein of the new band effort Age Sten Nilsenʼs AMMUNITION.
The new material wears the same catchiness as Wigwam, yet offers a rougher and more subtle sound and arrangements than his former bandʼs latter productions. Produced by one of melodic rocks most esteemed producers Erik Mårtensson, Age Sten Nilsenʼs AMMUNITON is now on the verge of promoting their first album “SHANGHAIED” due for a release in January.

With a dream team of rock musicians in the line-up Age Sten Nilsenʼs AMMUNITION has already had great success in Norway, playing shows to more than 5000 rockers.
This release is available on AOR Heaven outside of Scandinavia.

Line-up: AGE STEN NILSEN -vocals; HAL PATINO -bass (King Diamond/PRETTY MAIDS/Nordic Beast); ROBBAN BÄCK -drums (Sabaton/Eclipse); ERIK MÅRTENSSON -guitars (W.E.T / Eclipse); LASSE FINBRÅTHEN -keyboards (Wigwam/Circus Maximus); JON PETTERSEN -guitars (Ågeʼs Queen show/Bad Habits/Wild Willyʼs gang)

Despite the appearance on the CD of as 5 piece band, the recorded side of Swedish rockers Adrenaline Rush is down to the partnership of vocalist Tave Wanning and master songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist Erik Martensson, who provided all instruments, all but 2 of the songs and all mix and production duties here.
So essentially this is a new Martensson project with a female vocalist this time, giving it a new fresh dynamic over past albums with Toby Hitchcock, WET and of course Eclipse.
As with everything that Erik Martensson touches, this sounds a million bucks, with a big powerful production and clear mix.

Musically it’s a little different for Erik, the material sounds like a mix of recent Eclipse and old school Motley Crue styled LA hard rock. In fact both Girls Gone Wild and Hit You Like A Rock both sound like they were lifted straight off Motley’s Dr. Feelgood album. Girls Gone Wild borrows heavily from Kickstart My Heart!

It’s a big groovy melodic hard rock record with some fast moving stadium anthems like Want It All, Change and Playin’ To Win.
There are a couple of melodic rock anthems like Too Young To Die, No No No and Black N Blue.
When We’re Gone is the darker, moodier mid-album circuit breaker.

There are some really attractive elements in this album. The sound is huge, the mix is crystal clear and there are a few monster songs.
I don’t think it is quite as memorable as past Martensson projects, but that is maybe down to the style of singer Tave Wanning. Erik has received a couple of perfect 100s and a few very high 90s in the last few years, so he’s still my favourite producer of recent years.
Well worth checking out for fans of Erik’s material and fans of female fronted ass kicking melodic rock.

Fronted by the gorgeous and talented singer Tåve Wanning, ADRENALINE RUSH are going  to fire up the international rock scene with their lethal dose of heavy guitars, infectious hooks and full blown R n’ R attitude! “Change” was released already as digital single in late April and is now available – together with the album opener “Black N’ Blue” – as instant gratification track for all those who preorder the album now via iTunes. The two songs can also be streamed via Spotify.

ADRENALINE RUSH debut album was recorded and written under the direction of producer Erik Mårtensson (Eclipse, W.E.T) and features 11 energetic, live-oriented tracks with strong melodies and powerful riffs. The modern production keeps the spirit of the 1980´s alive and should appeal to fans of bands like Danger Danger, Vixen, Dokken, Warrant, Treat and Crazy Lixx.

ADRENALINE RUSH showed their full blown RnR attitude playing at the Frontiers Rock Festival in Milan last May, where their dynamic performance left a lasting impression on the attending rockers. Everything is now finally in place for the release of the album and the band is ready to take the show on the road with this killer new release!

ADRENALINE RUSH are Tave Wanning (lead vocals), Marcus Johansson (drums). Soufian Ma'Aoui (bass, vocals), Alexander Hagman (guitar, vocals), Ludvig Turner (lead guitar, vocals)
