SILENT SKIES - Horizons (Official Audio) // Sweet Lemon

SILENT SKIES sign with Sweet Lemon!
Soulfood Music Distribution’s inhouse label Sweet Lemon proudly announces the signing of a very special new project: Silent Skies!
If you voice Scandinavian melancholy and let it run through the virtuosic fingers of an Oberlin Conservatory film score graduate, you get Silent Skies. It is the sum of two individual musical journeys that came together by coincidence; some would even call it fate.

Tom S. Englund, vocalist of Swedish band Evergrey, and Vikram Shankar's ways crossed when Englund saw Shankar re-interpret one of his compositions on piano on YouTube. A swift email suggesting a collaboration gave birth to ideas of a musical landscape rooted in cinematic, film score music, driven by Shankar's tender and emotive piano playing, but with the added sound of Englund's unique and charismatic vocals and strong melodic sensibility.

The compositions are both bleak and hopeful, setting a sombre tone, and with lyrics that stem from self-reflection and existential contemplation, the atmospheric music of Silent Skies is engrossing and hypnotizing, evoking in the listener visions for the inner eye.

Silent Skies today debut with their single “Horizons”, which includes three different versions of the song. “Horizons” is available now on all streaming services and Youtube.

It was recorded and produced in Sweden and USA by Vikram Shankar and Tom S Englund, mixed by Christer-André Cederberg, Cederberg Studios Kristiansand, Norway.

EVERGREY Release New Album 'The Storm Within' September 9

Summing up EVERGREY's new album ‘The Storm Within’ quick and to the point, the band is celebrating their 20th Anniversary with the strongest album of their career.

While this may come off as music industry lip-service in honour of the Swedish quintet, anyone who has followed Evergrey will find it impossible not to become completely enthralled by the music on ‘The Storm Within’ within the space of the first listen. The band's trademark progressive, dark and melancholic elements are as strong as ever, the album ranks as one of the most progressive record they've created in terms of performance, but Evergrey managed to put it in a package that is more accessible and direct compared to any of their nine previous outings. Frontman / founder Tom S. Englund credits Evergrey's learning-by-doing over the past two decades for the feel of ‘The Storm Within’, in particular their all-important ‘Hymns For The Broken’ record from 2014, which saw a revitalized Evergrey line-up return with a new energy.

"We went from having no intention of making an album at all to having all the inspiration in the world on Hymns For The Broken," says Englund. “But, honestly, we've never felt better. The Storm Within is a massive album. There are no fillers on it and we've never been about that. I think the inspiration speaks for itself."

Evergrey's lyrics have always matched the depth and intensity of their music, and the concept behind The Storm Within is no exception. Englund considers the storyline behind the lyrics to be one of the biggest concepts Evergrey has ever tackled, based on something that everyone can relate to; having someone, losing them, and having to pick yourself up and move on. He goes so far as to call it the band's first "love" album, but it's not a subject that should be taken lightly in the Evergrey universe.

"As usual, the lyrics are based on someone or some event in my life," says Englund. "When we were making this album a lot of these relationship issues were going on around me; people losing a partner or a loved one and grieving. 'The Storm Within' is about a search for identity, trying to make yourself full when you feel half empty, and I placed that storyline in an interstellar world."

Musically, ‘The Storm Within’ plays to Evergrey's trademark prog metal attack but it's loaded with double-take moments. Lead-off track "Distance" is a surprise lead single (and first video), the melodically and lyrically stunning "Passing Through" is destined to become a fan favourite, "My Allied Ocean" is one of Evergrey's most aggressive songs to date, and the epic title track makes for the perfect album closer in the tradition of Devin Townsend or Rush. The addition of Nightwish vocalist Floor Jansen on "In Orbit" is the icing on an already filling cake.

"That was actually my wife (Carina Englund) thinking for me," Englund says of Jansen's involvement. "Floor is a personal friend and major Evergrey fan, so it was over a glass of wine between her and my wife, who asked her if she wanted to do the song. 'In Orbit' is a powerhouse of a song and it would be easy to make it the first single, but it's not the first impression we want to make. That said, it would be stupid not to release it as a single, and if we could get Floor to do the video, that would be a home run."

Speaking of Englund's better half Carina, she reprises her ongoing role as Evergrey's secret weapon on every album since they began, contributing vocals this time out to the song "The Paradox Of The Flame". In addition, Evergrey renewed their partnership with critically acclaimed video director Patric Ullaeus for ‘The Storm Within’, fulfilling the band's vision of creating the most cinematic album in their catalogue. Three stellar clips were shot and, in a huge promotional push, are slated to hit the internet leading up to the official album release.

Englund is proud to have ‘The Storm Within’ represent Evergrey's all-important 20th Anniversary, although he freely admits he didn't take note of the landmark occasion until the album was well underway.

"I had a goal when I started Evergrey; I wanted to make 10 albums and that would fulfill my life plan. That's not something I ever thought I would accomplish. It's quite an amazing thing to be a band for 20 years and release albums that aren't sub-par. When I realized we'd done 10 albums in 20 years it was mind-boggling. I'm proud to say that out of all the albums we've released over the last 20 years, we've never released one that we didn't feel was the best we could do at that time. That goes for every song, every note, everything. That's why we don't do anything half-assed."

‘The Storm Within” will be available as CD, Digipak, ltd. colored Vinyl, ltd. Picture Vinyl and ltd. Box Set.

EVERGREY Storm Back With 'Hymns For The Broken' Sept. 26

Yes it's true, one of the most original metal bands to come out of Sweden, EVERGREY, almost called it quits. It wasn't a decision vocalist/guitarist Tom S. Englund had spent hours or weeks brooding over, but as time passed following the band's ‘Glorious Collision’ album from 2011 he felt less and less inspired to continue. Perhaps it was the splintering of the band line-up in 2010 - which saw Henrik Danhage (guitars), Jonas Ekdahl (drums), and Jari Kainulainen (bass) leave on friendly terms - or maybe it was the business side of the music that had worn him down, but Englund had seriously considered throwing in the towel. Fate had other plans, however, and he found himself working alongside his former bandmates due to circumstances beyond his control. The end result of that unplanned collaboration, which was meant to be temporary, resulted in a re-energized Evergrey creating ‘Hymns For The Broken’, arguably the strongest album in the band's 16 year career.

"We needed a stand-in drummer for a few shows that had already been booked," Englund explains, "because Hannes (Van Dahl) had been offered the chance to join Sabaton, so I naturally called Jonas to see if he was available. We also needed a second guitarist, so I asked Henrik and he was fine with it. While we were doing those shows we realized that we were having a lot of fun with the music again."

"I'd say that the guys coming back saved Evergrey because I wasn't 100% set on doing an album," Englund admits. "And I'm amazed. The band sounds hungry, the album sounds awesome, and I can say there's not a weak song on it. I like it a lot, which is strange because usually I'm so tired of the music after working on an album for such a long time. Honestly, I've never felt I've been as close to the music as I am with ‘Hymns For The Broken’ because all the bits and pieces are in there. It's exactly what my vision for the album was. Usually you get about 80% of it right, but this is 100% what we wanted."

Evergrey treads familiar musical territory on ‘Hymns For The Broken’, but they most certainly haven't rehashed any of their previous eight albums. Their trademark elements of dark and light, rage and melancholy, and Englund's signature vocals are all intact, but there's a raw energy in Evergrey's new music that hasn't been heard in years, if ever.

"I think you can hear that the album is full of energy, full of life," says Englund. "It's definitely hungry, and it sounds different from any of the other releases we have. I'm not bashing our other albums at all; ‘Hymns For The Broken’ is just a different approach. I sang pretty much everything in writing mode, so the initial ideas were there from the beginning. We didn't try to go back and polish things up. Also, bass and drums were recorded together live in the studio, and we didn't stop until we had the take we wanted. We were after the spontaneity and I think you can hear it."

Producer Jacob Hansen (Volbeat, Amaranthe, Primal Fear) mixed ‘Hymns For The Broken’, whom Englund considers the best man for the job. According to him, Hansen knew instinctively what the band wanted to do with the new music. Working from the original demos, "he made the songs sound 100 times better."

Taking the cover art and song titles on ‘Hyms For The Broken’ at face value, it seems the thread woven through the album is tied to the concept of battle, war and revolution. Evergrey isn't making a political statement, however. Nothing could be further from the truth. ‘Hymns For The Broken’ is about the human struggle that has been so present on all of Evergrey's albums.

"For the last six years I've gone through a major transition, which has pushed me into corners where I've discovered things about myself that I didn't know existed," Englund reveals. "It's an album about finding out you're not the person you thought you were, which is something that can be scary and terrifying and rewarding. It's been one hell of a journey. I'm not saying that my journey has ended or that I have the answers to anything. I'm confident enough to stand here and do this again. I think we’ve used our music as a forum for people who feel the same way we do about things, to make people feel less alone in some way."
