Salty Dog are a hard rock band formed in late 1986 in Los Angeles and originally consisted of Jimmi Bleacher, Scott Lane, Michael Hannon and Khurt Maier (Ratt, Max Havoc). The band released its first record in 1990, titled "Every Dog has its day” composed of all original songs except for a cover of Willie Dixon's “Spoonful”. Guitarist Pete Reveen had joined the band by this time, and his input improved the band's sound immensely. The band showed great promise in the early 1990s, and at one point ruled the sunset strip and Hollywood. Things were looking so promising for this band but they were sadly lost in the shuffle when the grunge-rock movement hit in late 1991.

Thankfully this dog has still got a day and more as we are  about to find out with this exciting new release entitled “Lost Treasure”. The line up here includes the great Darrel Beach on vocals and with production from Pete we have the great recordings you are about to hear. This is great American rock played just as it should be. The band have drawn influences from Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith and have also tinged some early blues into their fantastic sound.

The songs on “Lost Treasure” should have been released many moons ago, as the band says “The music is bad-ass and has a lot of attitude” But, back then it was never meant to be so here we are with these fantastic songs now, it's so good that the band have proved that a good dog can't be put down, this dog lives to fight another day.

Johan Kihlberg's IMPERA Launch 'Age Of Discovery' Feb 23

Categories:
News Feed

After three albums with his band IMPERA, founding drummer Johan Kihlberg decided it was time to spread his wings, and the Swede came up with the idea to record his first solo effort, Johan Kihlberg’s Impera “Age Of Discovery”.  “I felt this would give me the opportunity to spread my wings a bit and work with some other people," Johan said. "I grew up with bands like KISS, QUEEN, ABBA and THE BEATLES, who were not afraid to have a wide range of styles on their albums. I’m obviously a hard rock fan at heart, but I’m also influenced by bands like SIMPLE MINDS, KRAFTWERK, MANFRED MANN’S EARTH BAND, HUMAN LEAGUE and many others. I’m also a huge fan of movies and movie soundtracks."

The first person Johan approached was LION’S SHARE guitarist Lars Chriss, who is also a renowned producer and mixer.  “Johan and I got together and started writing songs," Chriss said. "He usually had an idea of the direction and we took it from there. We also had a couple of friends coming up with basic ideas for about half of the album. We had the luxury to cherry-pick the songs we thought would add to what we already had going. For lyrics and melodies we worked closely with singer Mick Devine of the band SEVEN, whom I’ve done a couple albums with the last couple of years. My old friend and LION’S SHARE keyboardist Kay Backlund stepped up to the plate and worked with us on a couple of tracks as well."

Kihlberg and Chriss decided to work with several different singers on the project, while enlisting Kihlberg’s longtime friend and IMPERA bandmate Mats Vassfjord to lay down the bass tracks. "As soon as we had the songs written, we started thinking about what voice and singer that would fit each individual track the best," Kihlberg said. "Fortunately, they all agreed and did an amazing job on the album. I even managed to get one of my all-time favorite singers, Michael Sadler from SAGA, to sing a song."

Johan Kihlberg’s Impera “Age Of Discovery” features a wide range of musical influences while remaining a very strong, melodic and powerful album. It boasts great production work by Chriss and a stunning artwork by Carl-André Beckston.

Line-up: Johan Kihlberg - Drums/Keyboards; Lars Chriss (Lion’s Share)- Guitars; Mats Vassfjord (220 Volt) Bass; Michael Sadler (Saga) - Lead & Backing Vocalss on 8; Göran Edman (Yngwie Malmsteen, John Norum) - Lead & Backing Vocals on 6; Mick Devine (Seven) - Lead Vocals on 3, 5, 9 - Backing Vocals on 3, 7, 9, bonus track; Nigel Bailey (Bailey) - Lead Vocals on 7, 10, bonus track - Backing Vocals on 5, 10 ; Nils Patrik Johansson (Lion’s Share, Astral Doors) - Lead & Backing Vocals on 2, 3; Michael J. Scott - Lead & Backing Vocals on 4; Mattias IA Eklundh (Freak Kitchen) - solo on 9; Kay Backlund (Lion’s Share) - Keyboards on 1, 3, 6; Anders Rybank (Coastland Ride) - Keyboards on 8

DUKES OF THE ORIENT Debut Out Feb 23

Friday, February 23, 2018

What do you get when you match a Brit from London who loves American AOR with an American from California who grew up on British Prog?

Dukes of the Orient is the masterful pairing of vocalist John Payne (ASIA Featuring John Payne, ex-Original Asia, GPS) with keyboardist Erik Norlander (Last In Line, Lana Lane) who now present their eponymous debut album, ten years in the making.

Dukes of the Orient will release their self-titled debut February 23rd via Frontiers Music Srl. The first video and audio offering from the album for the track “Strange Days” can be seen below

“With Dukes of the Orient we have dug deep with analog soundscapes, superlative musicians and song-driven epics. Add to this the masterful artwork of Rodney Matthews and a journey that started with the supergroup ASIA, we give you the next chapter, one we are extremely proud of,” says Payne.

Payne’s powerful arena-seasoned vocals carry soaring melodies and lush harmonies over the sea of classic synthesizers and keyboards artfully painted with Norlander’s signature sonic palette.
The two are backed by a world-renowned ensemble of top musicians including Jeff Kollman, Guthrie Govan, Moni Scaria and Bruce Bouillet on guitars and Jay Schellen on drums. Payne provides bass guitar and additional lead and rhythm guitar parts to complete the audiophile production. The album was mixed on a traditional analog console to preserve and enhance the natural depth, clarity and soul of the tracks with great care taken to avoid over-compression, extreme equalization and distortion.

Dukes of the Orient has its origins in 2007 as ASIA Featuring John Payne, a band that continued on after ASIA keyboardist, Geoff Downes, left to re-form the original 1982 lineup. Payne recruited Norlander to join Guthrie Govan and Jay Schellen for tour dates in the US and initial recordings, some of which endured to appear on the Dukes of the Orient album here. Govan left the band to form The Aristocrats and was replaced by guitarist Bruce Bouillet followed by Jeff Kollman and Moni Scaria. The final lineup resulted in the track “Seasons Will Change,” released as a video in 2013 and also now appears on the Dukes of the Orient album. Following the death of original ASIA vocalist, John Wetton, in early 2017, Payne and Norlander decided that these recordings should give birth to a new band, both out of respect for Wetton and for clarity with the Downes-led ASIA.

Track Listing:
1. Brother in Arms
2. Strange Days
3. Amor Vincit Omnia
4. Time Waits for No One
5. A Sorrow’s Crown
6. Fourth of July
7. Seasons Will Change
8. Give Another Reason

Band Members:
John Payne (vocals, bass, guitars)
Erik Norlander (keyboards)
With
Jay Schellen (drums)
Jeff Kollman, Guthrie Govan, Moni Scaria and Bruce Bouillet (guitar)

MR Update

Monday morning, time for an update to say...no updates this week!

Yes, I’m at the other end of the state, right smack in the middle of wombat country with the family, taking a week’s vacation in the middle of this really hot summer.

Back to business from next Monday, both here and at MR.

I had to do a supplies run yesterday which gave me the first chance to play the final master of an upcoming MelodicRock Records release.
Now I was expecting this to be a cool album based on earlier demos and who is involved, but I’ve been completely shocked by the end result. Not just the fantastic songs, but the mega production and the glorious harmonies and overall classic feel of this record.

To be honest, I don’t think I’ve released anything quite like this to date. It’s a classic slice of late 80s American feel good melodic rock. In fact, ever since playing it I haven’t been able to get the debut Danger Danger album out of my head!
Can’t wait to bring this one to your attention and can’t wait to get back in the car to crank this again. But first...the beach!
