The Michael Thompson Band is back with their brand new album, “Love And Beyond” on April 26, 2019! For this new release, Michael wanted to go back to the more polished AOR sound of the band’s debut album. Once again, he teamed up with Wyn Davis for the mix and also had the amazing Mark Spiro involved in the songwriting and appearing on vocals together with the awesome Larry King and Larry Antonino. Best known for being Unruly Child’s bass player, Antonino delivers a phenomenal vocal performance which can only be defined as stunning. Another Unruly Child member, Guy Allison appears on keyboards, while drums on the album are handled by Sergio Gonzalez and Tim Pedersen.
Amongst musician circles, Michael Thompson is considered one of the leading guitar players in the world. He was awarded the "Distinguished Alumni" award from his alma mater Berklee College of Music to commemorate his contributions to the music industry. Berklee's program for the event noted that "he is widely regarded as being among the elite studio session players, and his amazing list of credits includes such prominent names as Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, 'N Sync, Toni Braxton, Phil Collins, Rod Stewart, the Scorpions, Vince Neil, Christina Aguilera, Michael Bolton, Mariah Carey, Bette Midler, Madonna, Babyface, En Vogue, Gloria Estefan, Stanley Clarke and Ricky Martin."
Originally from New York, Michael moved to Los Angeles in 1979 to begin a studio musician career. In 1988, after working to try and get a deal with his band Slang, he finally got signed by Geffen Records to release one album entitled "How Long", under the Michael Thompson Band (M.T.B.) monicker. On "How Long", more great studio musicians appeared as guests, in particular drummer-maestro Terry Bozzio, singer Moon Calhoun (ex The Strand), Pat Torpey (Mr Big), bassist Jimmy Haslip, John Elefante (Kansas), Toto's Bobby Kimball, and Great White associates Michael Lardie and Wyn Davis (who also produced the album). Songwriters would include, among others, AOR luminaries such as Jeff Paris, Mark Spiro, Billy Trudel and Brett Walker.
As of today, “How Long” is still regarded as one of the highest examples of hi-tech AOR / West Coast, with superb production and immaculate songwriting. Reissued in 2007 with 3 bonus tracks, it started a relationship between Michael Thompson and Frontiers, who put out the new Michael Thompson Band album in early 2012.
For the second album which Frontiers released in 2012, Michael teamed up with the awesome singer Larry King from the band Soleil Moon. Larry brought a new and more rocking approach to the MTB sound, but certainly the trademark elements of songwriting and melodies were still to be found on the “Future Past”.
Pure AOR can’t get much better than this!

Not only will the Michael Thompson Band be appearing at Frontiers Rock Festival this April 28-29th for their first live performance in Europe, but they are also working on a new studio album! Today, we are pleased to offer you a preview of the new music they are working on with the song, "'72 Camaro"
You can also stream or download the single here:
This video was filmed when Craig Bauer (mixing engineer) was approached by Hear Technologies with the idea of capturing video of a recording session in Sphere Studios, owned by Francesco Camelli (tracking engineer), in LA. They wanted well known, reputable musicians in the video since it was ultimately going to be used at their booth at the NAMM Show. Craig approached Michael Thompson and Larry King, who are in the middle of the recording new albums from Michael Thompson Band and Soleil Moon and they were more than happy to call in some friends to be the subjects for the video with them. So Vinnie Colaiuta, Leland Sklar - Bassist, and Ricky Peterson came in and now you have this video to watch!
“We will see if and how we will use this song later on,” says singer Larry King, “but in the meantime we wanted the fans to be able to properly enjoy this song in preparation of the band’s performance at the Frontiers' Festival. We hope you can enjoy this and see you soon in Italy!”

In 1983, Michael Thompson and Billy Trudel were introduced to each other. They were brought together by manager Steve Brooks and Producer/Engineer, Wyn Davis to form a new band called Slang. They worked hard in the studio and out playing shows to get this new project noticed but nothing seemed to work in their favor.
After 2 years of struggling, they started to adventure into other projects. In 1985 Billy signed his first recording contract with The City, a band on Chrysalis Records and Michael was playing guitar with Andy Fraser (Free) When Manager Alan Neven ( Guns & Roses) heard the project. He took it to Geffen Records and the band was signed. But there was a problem, Billy couldn’t sign the contract because of his prior obligations to The City. So Michael had to find another vocalist to record the album.
That’s when he found Moon Calhoun to take Billy’s place. They changed the name of the band to the Michael Thompson Band and released the record in 1987. Since that time both Michael and Billy became well established in they’re music carriers, backing up some of the biggest artist in the music industry.
Then in 2011, Michael and Billy re-connected and decided to finish that record they always wanted to make. That was the birth of the Culver Kingz. The band name came from both of them living  in Culver City and writing and recording everything in Michaels studio. Now all these years later they are thrilled to come back full circle and do what they do best, Make music.
For the past 30 years, here are just a few artist Michael Thompson, and Billy Trudel have worked with.

Podcasts & Radio

In Episode 90 and 91 of The Double Stop, Brian is joined by guitarist Michael Thompson (Michael Thompson Band, Animal Logic, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Shania Twain).

Michael Thompson discusses his life and career, and explains how he became one of the most sought-after session guitarists of the last twenty-five years. A small sample of his sessions includes Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, 'N Sync, Toni Braxton, Phil Collins, Rod Stewart, Christina Aguilera, Michael Bolton, Mariah Carey, Bette Midler, Madonna, Animal Logic with Stewart Copeland and Stanley Clarke and Shania Twain. And producers such as Mutt Lange, Quincey Jones, Babyface, and David Foster. In part one we go through his personal history, and in part two we talk about specific sessions.
On working with Mutt Lange (with Shania Twain), and the grueling hours - part 2 58:30 "He make it great because he's not busting your ass. He's trying to get the great performance - that's his whole thing. He's not looking for you to play it correctly, he's looking for you to play it with what he calls "The Grease" on it. "

On working with Madonna Part 2 41:00 "She was sitting like two feet behind me, commentating on every note I played. And not in a great way. 'Oh no, I don't like that. That's ok. No. No.' So I just had to survive it."

On working with Michael Jackson (on The Earth Song) Part 2 44:45 "They had the lighting really low in the studio and we were working on the tune for an hour or so. And I'm doing a part, and I'm looking down. And I realize that Michael's come in and sat down right next to me while I was playing... Originally they wanted Michael Clapton to play on that, but he was either on tour, or busy or something."
