Royal Hunt: A new record, a tougher sound.

Andre Andersen talks about the new Eye Witness album and playing The Gods 2003.

How did you enjoy The Gods performance this year and how would you rate it?
The festival was great - very well organized. The actual show was pretty good - the sound (or lights) will never be perfect in a situation like this, but it was god and we played fine and reaction from the people was great.

Sorry I didn't get to meet you all in person - I didn't see you guys backstage at all!
The whole area was pretty crowded, so we went in and out rather quickly.

How do you find playing the UK over other places in Europe?
It was nice. We were very surprised that people knew the words of most of the songs - after all, it was our first show in UK.

Has the dynamic of the band changed at over the years?
We seem to be busier every year, so it kind of hard to notice the actual dynamics...

How about the recording process - you are a few albums in now with John West - have things changed in the studio? Is it easier, harder?
Much easier. John's so musical... Extremely diverse, so there's stuff there to discover in years to come. He didn't peak yet - far from it.

Is it still to early to rate this album again the others you have recorded?
Yeah, a bit. But presales are promising.

I noticed the sound on this one was a little tougher - maybe the production on it was a little fuller. Was this an intentional move?
Absolutely. The Mission was all Sci-Fi, digital and all, so on this one we went for an analog, full and warm sound.

How do you keep in good shape - especially on the road?
Lots and lots of Jack Daniels - good old snake oil.

What do you like best about touring - how do you rate the importance of being seen live and meeting fans when possible?
We still love touring - after all those years. Studio's fun too, but nothing beats that adrenalin rush you're getting on stage.

Do you get any funny/strange incidents from fans?
What about this guy on the signing session, waiting for almost half an hour for everybody to get their CD's signed and than - when almost everybody's left - asking me "which band are you in?".

How about the album itself - tell us about the concept behind it?
It's like "Headline News" - you're getting some bits and pieces presented to you, different - and very current - issues, all compressed to approx. 45 minutes.

Once again, I'd love a few comments on the songs themselves if possible!
Hunted - Great opener - fast and catchy

Can't Let Go - My favorite - sounds like a war machine

The Prayer - One of John's best performances

The Edge Of The World - Nasty - almost new rock sound, great lyrics

Burning The Sun - Typical RH - fast and melodic

Wicked Lounge - Try to mention another rock band doing a jazz tune on their album - and still sound like themselves.

Fifth Element - No RH album without an instrumental - it's the law!

Help Us G-D - Very emotional song - great combination of sadness and rage.

Game Of Fear - Fast and angry - the heaviest track on the album

Eye Witness - Jackyl and Hide - first half's unplugged, almost dreamy but the second half rocks.

Martial Arts* (Special Version) - Always in our live - set

Follow Me* (Live acoustic) - Unusual - audience won't let us go after 4th encore, so we played this one (but didn't have a piano that night), so we did it in a "alternative version" - with the Hammond.

Anything you would like to add?
Hope to be back in UK soon, playing, but for now - enjoy the album, we'll see you all soon.

Royal Hunt - Andre Andersen (2002)

It seems like Royal Hunt has been around forever! You have several albums now, but only from 1993, with your debut. Does it feel longer to you?

I never thought about it. I have been writing/recording/performing music all my life, so it has been my natural environment for many years.

Has the music of Royal Hunt progressed in the way you set out for them to do?
All the way and we are still doing it. Every single album is a new experiment, strictly kept under the Royal Hunt roof new ways to express ourselves without loosing our signature, key elements.

I'd like to ask you about song writing.....You are the primary songwriter for Royal Hunt - do you find the pressure to come up with new music a challenge or a bit of pressure on you?
Challenge every time, pressure never (except for occasional deadlines here and there).

The music of Royal Hunt has always been ambitious - never standing still and always trying something new - how do the concepts for each album come to you?
Accidentally it could be a book, a movie or even a phrase you'll pick up at some point it will trigger something inside you that generates your interest in exploring the theme both musically and lyrically.

Let's go straight to The Mission, as I said earlier, ambitious and intricate as always.
The concept story of this album is based on the sci-fi novel by Ray Bradbury Marian Chronicles. I gather you personally are a big fan of this book?

Yes, this particular book. It has all these eternal human aspects and issues, all wrapped up in a slightly sci-fi blanket.

Can you tell those not familiar yet with the story, a little behind it?
It is about colonization of Mars as a stage set, but basically it is all about our ways and values what we possibly bring to a new, pure world if we were given a second chance to start all over.

Are you a big Sci-Fi fan in general?
No, I wouldn t say so.

What are your other favorite Sci-Fi books and TV shows?
I am watching the X-files occasionally and I like some novels by the great Sci-Fi writers like Bradbury, Azimov and Beliaev among others.

What drives you continued passion for writing music and the more complex side of it to say the least?
I don t know my background, perhaps. I grew up with classical music, straight rock bands like Deep Purple and Zeppelin and progressive ones Rush, Yes, Pink Floyd. I kind of mixed all of it in my own, twisted musical vision, and Royal Hunt is a very good example of that.

Do you ever wake up and think to yourself, I'd love to make a simple pop rock album?!!
I just did. My second solo album is like that not pop though but straight ahead hard rock album. I know that your next question would be "When it will be out?" - sometime this year.

The Bio for The Mission says "The music of Royal Hunt has been described as powerful, majestic, melodic, progressive, impressive and elegant."
I love that....it's a great range of passions and emotions.

Reading that, does that make you feel like the messages behind your songs has been successfully received?
I hope so, but you can never be entirely sure it is up to the fans and their perception of your work.

What music/artists do you hear these days that really inspires you?
Way too many to mention, from pop to hard & heavy and mainly classical.

Is there anything that you hear that sometimes you might say to yourself, I wish I thought of that?
All the time.

And what of the upcoming release The Watchers. How do you describe it fitting into the Royal Hunt catalogue?
I see all 3 releases as one Intervention, the Mission and the Watchers. They give you every aspect of RH new material, re-recorded old songs, live and unplugged versions. Though some people calling it as the longest EP in the history of music.

Turning back the clock a little, was the departure of DC Cooper from the band a slap in the face, or a challenge to move on in the future? It was just a regular change, natural evolution happens all the time to everybody. I never saw anything dramatic in that, but I assume the press had a different point of view.

And how do you think the band has fared since his departure?
Both DC and John are excellent singers, but besides the vastly improved social climate in the band, we gained a bit more depth with John. He has a wider range, fuller voice and brought a touch of soul quality in our music.

I think John West has an awesome voice, but were there any others considered for the vocalist position at the time.
Yes it was many and John was the best choice then and he is still now.

Did you enjoy recording your own solo album?
Sure. My second one titled "Black on Black" is a thrill, but almost without prog/clever changes, just great rock songs recorded by great musicians. It has a timeless touch that some of the great bands had in the 70-ies but it comes with current sounds and up-to-date (at least, I think so).
It's very different from Changing Skin, which was a very quiet, symphonic and complicated affair. "Black on Black" is just pure strait in your face rock.

What's next up for Royal Hunt?
Touring we are rehearsing and waiting for the tour dates to come.

Anything you would like to add to any Royal Hunt fans out there Andre?
I hope you ll enjoy our current and upcoming releases and I hope you'll be able to join us at one of the concerts in your area see you soon!

I always feelt that if you do it from your heart, if you stay true to yourself and work hard you´ll be granted this sort of staying power-and yes, wee´re all extremely grateful to our fans for giving us an opportunity to create, to improve and to continue our musical journey. So, once again, push that “play” button, enjoy this video and rest assured, the best is yet to come!”

The powerhouse that is Royal Hunt continues on with this “in between albums” live release, a double album recorded during the band’s 2015 festival appearances.
The set takes in 90 minutes of full power Royal Hunt – a complete rendition of their signature concept album Paradox to kick off Disc 1. On Disc 2 there are just 5 songs, but thankfully the best track from the band's recent era - A Life To Die For - proves to be a fitting climax.

Just 12 songs for the 90 minutes of high intensity progressive (melodic) metal. You know the band – you know the songs. The only issue with a release such as this – is it any good? Yes indeed.

The recordings are clear, sharp and very well mixed. The performances are what you’d expect of the pros that André Andersen, DC Cooper, Andreas Passmark, Jonas Larsen and Andreas Johansson are.

One for fans of The Hunt and especially the Paradox album and a great performance from DC Cooper and the rest of the band.

Out on Frontiers Music Srl in March!

Frontiers Music Srl is pleased to announce the release of ROYAL HUNT new live album entitled “Cargo” on March 18, 2016.

Following the release of their latest studio album - “Devil's Dozen” – ROYAL HUNT participated in three widely known Festivals around the globe in the fall of 2015: ProgPower USA, Loud Park Japan and Rockingham UK. They performed their energetic brand of symphonic/progressive yet highly melodic and instantly accessible Royal Rock for thousands of appreciative fans.

While ROYAL HUNT´s next tour – sat to the spring of 2016 – is being announced (see dates below), the band found the time to gather in the studio and pick out the best performances recorded during their festival trek: an hour and a half of ROYAL HUNT´s trademark sonic assault, skillfully captured on tape.

Why live album and why now? "Well, mostly because we haven´t released any live recordings for – roughly – 10 years or so." says keyboard maestro and principal songwriter Andre Andersen, “2006” was great and many fans consider it to be our best (some will pick “1996” or “Closing the Chapter” as their favorite) but anyway – it´s been awhile, so we assumed that it might be interesting for you to check out our “new swing” at this live set. Just think about it: last time we recorded “Paradox” live was almost 20 years ago! Add a few new songs, the excitement of the festival performance, a couple of new faces to the line-up and – all of a sudden – things are sounding quite a bit different. We´d say it sounds fresh but let´s see what´s your opinion on this matter will be."

The album includes a complete rendition of their signature concept album “Paradox”. Royal Hunt released 13 studio albums and their name stands for quality Symphonic / Progressive Metal.

It must be symphonic rock month, as Denmark’s symph-rock legends Royal Hunt keep their momentum going with album number 13, fittingly titled Devil’s Dozen.

You always know what to expect with the Hunt. So after an expected over the top bombastic intro, the opening track So Right So Wrong delivers everything fans were expecting.
With the exception perhaps of the tone in DC Cooper’s vocals. Not sure why he is using a nasally tone for some of the vocals? Either way, it’s a very fine classic Royal Hunt tune.

May You Never (Walk Alone) has a nicely balanced orchestral piano intro, high on sentiment before exploding into a double kick drum epic.
There’s only 8 new tunes on the album (similar to the last release), but with 5 of those near or over 7 minutes, there is still good value on offer.

50 minutes of bombastic, classic Royal Hunt material, with DC in fine voice and the writing and production talents of Andre Andersen in good form.

In many ways this album typifies the sound of the band over the previous 12 albums. They probably won’t top my favourite The Mission, but this is very consistent and nothing short of massive in sound.
I can’t separate the songs into favourites – there are only 8 – so no fillers thankfully.

Baroque Danish Metal Stars ROYAL HUNT Return With 'Devil’s Dozen'

Artist:
Release Year:
2015

Frontiers Music Srl is excited to announce the release of the brand new studio album from ROYAL HUNT entitled “Devil’s Dozen” on August 21st in Europe and North America.

With keyboardist and songwriter André Andersen still at the helm, ROYAL HUNT have once again created an album that combines the basic sound and core values of classic rock with progressive rock and more current musical elements. After selling approximately 1.7 million albums globally and touring the world numerous times, the band’s still going strong…and now gets to release their 13th studio album entitled “The Devil´s Dozen”.

André Andersen says: “We´re very pleased to be able to present our new, thirteenth studio album. While staying on course with all traditional Royal Hunt´s  musical values this one contains quite a bit of variety – from an up-tempo, double kick driven “May You Never (Walk Alone)” to the bluesy “Heart On A Platter” and probably our best ballad to date – “Until The Day”.  Counting in Royal Hunt´s usual attention to details – playing wise as well as production wise – I´m sure that any fan of symphonic/melodic yet hard rocking music will be pleased with our latest offering.”

The new recording stays true to the original, larger-than-life Royal Hunt sound, with imaginative instrumentation, intricate arrangements, soaring vocals and catchy, massive choruses. Yet, the addition of classical musicians/instruments and contemporary, modern day production elements move to twist the outcome into a unique sonic palette. The album is chock full of carefully crafted songs, recorded and mixed by a team who combined crystal clear sonics with a weighty punch.

Featuring once again the talents of the awesome US singer DC Cooper – who, after numerous requests from fans and promoters worldwide decided to reunite with the band in 2011 – Royal Hunt features – besides André Andersen on keyboards - long time member Andreas Passmark on bass, Jonas Larsen on guitar and new drummer Andreas Habo Johansson (ex Narnia). Royal Rock… no substitutes!

“Devil’s Dozen” tracklisting: So Right So Wrong; May You Never (Walk Alone); Heart On A Platter; A Tear In The Rain; Until The Day; Riches To Rags; Way Too Late; How Do You Know (bonus track).
