Guitarist, songwriter and all-round good guy Joel Hoekstra is a man on the rise. From Rock Of Ages, to Night Ranger, the occasional Foreigner fill-in role and now in Whitesnake, Joel Hoekstra is become a name guitarist in an era where few new guitar heroes have emerged.

His debut solo album is where he’s allowed to shine – from the impeccable guitar soloing and master class in memorable riff writing – to the challenging job of taking control of production – Joel nails it.
And in a nice added bonus, Joel has written every track on this album. Himself! (there’s one co-write with Russell Allen).
It’s nice to hear such an accomplished album from the pen of the star rather than hired gun writers.

This is a diverse album that ranges from melodic metal to commercial melodic rock, without losing the common thread and consistency an album needs.
Interestingly, with the two vocalists involved it is often a reversal of the expected, with metal man Russell Allen delivering a couple of fine melodic numbers and the voice of melodic rock Jeff Scott Soto handing in a couple of aggressive in your face numbers.
Of course both singers do what they do best on the other tracks, giving the album a clear balance of styles, despite the sometimes distracting tactic of alternating vocalists.

Say Goodbye to the Sun is a fierce tour de force with Russell bellowing at full volume. A Dio-esque metal intensity with this fine song.
Anymore sees Russell delivering a really catchy hard rock track with a fast beat and a free flowing high energy chorus.
Until I Left You is nothing short of a classic JSS sung melodic rock anthem. Great tune for fans of Night Ranger and Jeff as Joel turns ultra-commercial here.
Long For the Days is an epic sounding classic rock ballad. There’s some 70s and 80s influences there and more Dio, but ultra-melodic. Classy slow guitar solo too.
Scream is Jeff’s turn to go metal, with a tough but melodic sounding stadium metal track.
Never Say Never is Russell getting to sing at his most commercial. This is an instantly memorable melodic rocker with a stand out chorus.

Changes is Russell again, signing a moody hard rock track with a good heart.
The Only Way to Go is a uptempo hard rock song with a swagger and JSS in his darker heavier tone and Joel slashing his way through the song.
Dying to Live is a fast and fabulous melodic metal track which suits Russell to a tee.
Start Again is another JSS delivered monster melodic rock anthem. Huge chorus.
What We Believe is a bit of an epic mid-tempo album closer – the perfect tempo and tone to end one epic album.

Two thumbs up for Joel. Another very strong album – even more so give that it’s his debut solo album. A must for anyone that’s enjoyed his output in Night Ranger, Whitesnake and elsewhere.
And a cracking good set of songs for fans of JSS and Russell Allen to enjoy. The two singers really deliver here.
Melodic hard rock at its best!

WHITESNAKE'S GUITARIST JOEL HOEKSTRA TO RELEASE:
DYING TO LIVE on Frontiers Records October 16

ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING MELODIC, HARD ROCK ALBUMS OF THE YEAR!

FEATURING: JEFF SCOTT SOTO, RUSSELL ALLEN, TONY FRANKLIN, VINNY APPICE AND DEREK SHERINIAN

HOLLYWOOD, CA (July 29, 2015) Joel Hoekstra has announced the release of his new melodic hard rock studio album “Dying To Live” from his electrifying new side project, Joel Hoekstra’s 13Hoekstra is best known to rock fans as the currrent guitarist for Whitesnake, and also known for his work with Night Ranger, Trans Siberian Orchestra and the show Rock of Ages.

Dying To Live features an all-star cast of rockers including Jeff Scott Soto (vocals), Russell Allen (vocals), Tony Franklin (bass), Vinny Appice (drums), and Derek Sherinian (keyboards), and will be available via Frontiers Music SRL on Friday, October 16th.

Hoekstra took charge of the creative process by handling the production, song writing and arranging (music and lyrics).  The end result could best be described as hard, melodic, classic rock that is Dio'ish at its heaviest and Foreigner'ish at its lightest.
“Years ago, I released three solo albums that were mainly instrumental guitar music.  I wanted to put something out that showcased my production, writing and playing in the genre that I'm known for, which is melodic, hard rock’’, explains Hoekstra. ‘’That’s when I decided to start what I consider to be my rock side project, Joel Hoekstra's 13. Dying To Live focuses on struggles, potential pitfalls and the art of overcoming obstacles in life to finally arrive where we are meant to be.’’

Dying To Live was conceived before Hoekstra joined Whitesnake. David Coverdale gave the album his full blessing. “David wants his players to spread their wings and fly and of course be ready to rock when Whitesnake needs them, which obviously won't be an issue.”
Excited how the new album turned out, Hoekstra is looking forward to the overall reaction from fans and media. “I hope everyone will give it a listen. I feel it showcases my production, writing and playing in the genre I’m best known for thèse days. The line-up of musicians is stellar!  I want to thank everyone for any support in advance.  Life is good!

Going one better than Level 9, but not quite turning the dial to 11, the partnership of vocalist Russell Allen and Bassist/producer Mat Sinner form the new project Level 10.
Joining in is powerhouse guitarists Roland Grapow and Alex Beyrodt; Randy Black on drums and Alessandro Del Vecchio on keyboards (yes, him again!).
Mat Sinner doesn’t produce bad sounding records and Russell Allen doesn’t deliver substandard vocals, so there are two big ticks.

Songs is what it is all about. On this 12 track debut songs are provided by Sinner & Allen, Alessandro del Vecchio, Magnus Karlsson, Alex Beyrodt, Carsten Schulz, Sander Gommans & Amanda Somerville. Thing is, there’s no credits assigned to each track, so you have no idea who really wrote what.
The collection of names indicates that things could be quite varied on the album, and so it turns out to be. But apart from a few real highlights, while the album sounds great, I found most of the material lacked a real spark or hook to draw me back in.

The album opens with Cry No More - an absolute blinder of a song - a full metal blast with a great hook and some awesome vocals.
Unfortunately it’s followed by Soul Of A Warrior - possibly the worst track on the album - a near 6 minute plod fest that never seems to end and kills the momentum of the opening track.
When The Nighttime Comes picks things back up with an improved pace and better chorus hook.
But then once again, another plodder. One Way Street has a pretty forgettable chorus and not much life to it.
As if going back and forth between good and not, Blasphemy is a more hard hitting metal.
Last Man On Earth then follows the pattern, with a pretty drab and forgettable chorus while In For The Kill cranks things into high gear, even if only for 4 minutes.
Of the last 4 tracks, the metal ballad All Hope Is Gone stands out as an album highlight; Demonized a solid melodic metal track following straight after.
The others I don’t care for unfortunately.

A great looking project on paper and I expect there might be a sequel at some point – as the album title suggests, but the participants will need to ensure a more consistent group of songs to make a lasting impression in a crowded market.

A new Allen/Lande release without mastermind Magnus Karlsson involved? Not sure about that. Timo Tolkki to take over as chief architect? Definitely know how I feel about that.
I came into this release – the 4th overall – with very low expectations. After Timo’s recent twin Avalon releases, I expected a bad production and some bland songwriting.
But I was wrong and I’m happy to announce that.
While I don’t think the album has the same wall of sound that Karlsson delivered or the same intensity in the vocals, it is still pretty good.

Interestingly, 6 of the 10 tracks feature just the one vocalist. Jorn on 3 and Russell on 3. Just 4 of the songs feature both vocalists and that’s a weakness of the album and shows how well Karlsson worked with both singers on all songs and intertwined their vocals on the first 3 records.

Thankfully the production is far better than the Avalon releases, with Dennis Ward brought in to mix the end results.
Anything featuring Russell Allen and Jorn Lande in full attack mode is going to appeal, so I’m glad everyone involved got it right.
Timo is responsible for writing all songs – with Jorn co-writing several with him. Timo is also responsible for the guitars, bass and keyboards. So it’s an impressive performance here and I’ll now expect more from him.

After 3 pretty similar releases (which I all rate highly), perhaps it is nice to hear these class vocalists at it once again, but with a different sound behind them.
The strong opener Come Dream With Me and the belting impact of the fast moving Down From The Mountain (both tracks featuring duel vocals) and In The Hands Of Time (featuring Russell) get the album off to the best possible start, with both singers in full fight.
It’s not until the quality metal ballad Lady Of Winter (featuring Jorn alone) do things slow down a little.
Dream Until Tomorrow is a song featuring both singers belting it out and is followed by another duet in the intense Hymn For The Fallen.

Russell closes the album with a pair of songs – one highly quality rocker and the other a powerful metal ballad called Bittersweet.

As much as I like the results here, I still haven’t played the album as much as I did the first three. I think the sonic impact of Magnus Kalrsson is the obvious missing ingredient here, plus the lack of interplay between vocalists, but otherwise, Timo far exceeded my expectations and this is still an enjoyable melodic metal / hard rock album worth of the Allen/Lande name.

RUSSELL ALLEN & MAT SINNER Combine To Form LEVEL 10

FRONTIERS MUSIC Srl SET TO
RELEASE LEVEL 10

An International All-Star Metal Line Up including
Vocalist Russell Allen; Bassist Mat Sinner;
Guitarist Roland Grapow and Alex Beyrodt
Drummer Randy Black and Keyboardist Alessandro Del Vecchio

Frontiers Music Srl, is pleased to announce another impactful release to kick 2015 off with a (heavy metal) bang: LEVEL 10’s debut album, “Chapter One”. Set for release in the EU on January 23rd and in North America on January 27th, the album features 12 songs performed in a true Metal style, with a distinctly contemporary edge.

LEVEL 10 was born out of a collaboration between American powerhouse singer Russell Allen (SYMPHONY X, ADRENALINE MOB, ALLEN LANDE) and the iconic German producer/bassist Mat Sinner (PRIMAL FEAR, SINNER). The pair met a few times during the years and swore to each other to find the time to work together. That occasion finally came about when Frontiers President, Serafino Perugino managed to connect with the two and get them committed to the creation of a new Metal album which could meld the more contemporary and aggro sound of Adrenaline Mob with the more traditional European Power Metal assault of Primal Fear.

Sinner quickly put together a killer lineup for the album, including his Primal Fear cohorts Randy Black (on drums) and Alex Beyrodt (on guitar) and called Roland Grapow (ex-Helloween) and Alessandro Del Vecchio (Hardline, Voodoo Circle) to complete the lineup on lead guitar and keyboards respectively. On the songwriting side – besides the band members – the album also sees contributions from Magnus Karlsson, Carsten Schulz, Sander Gommans and Amanda Somerville.

While the actual recording took a long time due to the “day job” commitments from the various musicians involved in this release, the result is an outstanding and super heavy – yet infectiously melodic - album! With Allen’s over-the-top vocals and a powerful lineup second to none, the resulting album is – from start to finish a true delight for all heavy metal fans!

“The target was to write and record a traditional and powerful heavy rock album with some of the best players in this genre” says Sinner. “The result is just amazing. Russell’s voice is in a fantastic shape, kick ass songs and I’m really proud of the album!”.

Russell Allen concludes: “When Mat and I met many moons ago we became fast friends. He's a great talent and a great guy. We had talked about working together in some way and it took shape in the form of level 10. I'm very excited for the world to finally hear this great record!”

A trailer for LEVEL 10 is available here: http://youtu.be/wp_cZvkrJT4

Track listing: Cry No More; Soul Of A Warrior; When The Nighttime Comes; One Way Street; Blasphemy; Last Man On Earth; In For The Kill; Voice Of The Wilderness; All Hope Is Gone; Demonized; The Soul Is Eternal; Forevermore.

LEVEL 10:

Russell Allen – Lead & Backing Vocals
Mat Sinner – Bass & Backing Vocals
Roland Grapow – Guitars
Alex Beyrodt – Guitars
Randy Black – Drums & Percussion
Alessandro Del Vecchio - Keyboards

ALLEN/LANDE - The Great Divide (Pre-View)

Russell Allen and Jorn Lande team for their forth partnership with the album The Great Divide.

To be honest, I wasn’t looking forward to this, even with the first three albums from the duo all ranking highly in my reviews and my great fondness for mastermind/songwriter/guitarist/producer Magnus Karlsson.

One reason is because Magnus is not involved in this at all. And secondly because taking over from him is Timo Tolkki, who has recently delivered two poorly received Avalon projects, both falling short with production as well as song writing.

Now I don’t have the writing credits for this album yet, but I do know that Timo produced and mixed it and he’s on the way to redeeming himself.

Despite missing that full frontal audio assault that Magnus gives us with his guitars and production, The Great Divide still manages to pack a good punch thanks to a tight Dennis Ward mix.
It’s well produced and is almost as heavy as its predecessors. Guitars still rule the day.

Vocally the album is every bit as impressive as Jorn and Russell deliver their usually high standard in vocals. There is less interplay between the two singers overall, but it’s great to hear both singing quality material with gusto.

Timo also delivers in the songwriting department. There’s some great melodic metal gems here.

You’ve already heard the opening track Come Dream With Me (https://www.facebook.com/frontiersmusicsrl/posts/738891939500193), and some additional snippets via http://youtu.be/gezpefzBqIA.

That track is a pretty good indication of what’s to come on the record. There is some blistering rockers in Dream About Tomorrow, In The Hands Of Time and The Hymn To The Fallen.
Mid-tempo ear rattlers like Lady Of Winter and Solid Ground show off the guys at their very best and then there’s a huge metal ballad to close the album Bitter Sweet.

So lots to look forward to here. I’m going to spend some additional time with it before my final review, but initial fears have certainly been laid to rest.

The album is out October 17 in Europe and October 21 in North America. Pre-order from Amazon:
