Johan Kihlberg's IMPERA Launch 'Age Of Discovery' Feb 23

Categories:
News Feed

After three albums with his band IMPERA, founding drummer Johan Kihlberg decided it was time to spread his wings, and the Swede came up with the idea to record his first solo effort, Johan Kihlberg’s Impera “Age Of Discovery”.  “I felt this would give me the opportunity to spread my wings a bit and work with some other people," Johan said. "I grew up with bands like KISS, QUEEN, ABBA and THE BEATLES, who were not afraid to have a wide range of styles on their albums. I’m obviously a hard rock fan at heart, but I’m also influenced by bands like SIMPLE MINDS, KRAFTWERK, MANFRED MANN’S EARTH BAND, HUMAN LEAGUE and many others. I’m also a huge fan of movies and movie soundtracks."

The first person Johan approached was LION’S SHARE guitarist Lars Chriss, who is also a renowned producer and mixer.  “Johan and I got together and started writing songs," Chriss said. "He usually had an idea of the direction and we took it from there. We also had a couple of friends coming up with basic ideas for about half of the album. We had the luxury to cherry-pick the songs we thought would add to what we already had going. For lyrics and melodies we worked closely with singer Mick Devine of the band SEVEN, whom I’ve done a couple albums with the last couple of years. My old friend and LION’S SHARE keyboardist Kay Backlund stepped up to the plate and worked with us on a couple of tracks as well."

Kihlberg and Chriss decided to work with several different singers on the project, while enlisting Kihlberg’s longtime friend and IMPERA bandmate Mats Vassfjord to lay down the bass tracks. "As soon as we had the songs written, we started thinking about what voice and singer that would fit each individual track the best," Kihlberg said. "Fortunately, they all agreed and did an amazing job on the album. I even managed to get one of my all-time favorite singers, Michael Sadler from SAGA, to sing a song."

Johan Kihlberg’s Impera “Age Of Discovery” features a wide range of musical influences while remaining a very strong, melodic and powerful album. It boasts great production work by Chriss and a stunning artwork by Carl-André Beckston.

Line-up: Johan Kihlberg - Drums/Keyboards; Lars Chriss (Lion’s Share)- Guitars; Mats Vassfjord (220 Volt) Bass; Michael Sadler (Saga) - Lead & Backing Vocalss on 8; Göran Edman (Yngwie Malmsteen, John Norum) - Lead & Backing Vocals on 6; Mick Devine (Seven) - Lead Vocals on 3, 5, 9 - Backing Vocals on 3, 7, 9, bonus track; Nigel Bailey (Bailey) - Lead Vocals on 7, 10, bonus track - Backing Vocals on 5, 10 ; Nils Patrik Johansson (Lion’s Share, Astral Doors) - Lead & Backing Vocals on 2, 3; Michael J. In early 2016, Ex Kiss of the Gypsy & Kingdom of Deadmen frontman/guitarist, Tony Mitchell started writing & recording what was to be his 5th solo studio album.

He set out to return to his melodic/AOR rock style that was associated with him in his previous bands leading up to the raw classic rock style of Kiss of the Gypsy & the heavy rocking Kingdom of Deadmen.

It became evident to Mitchell that the songs had a real magic about them & rather than finish the album & release it on his own XGypsy music label which he had done with previous albums, he thought he would test the water by sending a handful of tracks out to a few melodic rock record companies.

All were blown away & wanted to release it there & then but what swayed Mitchell's decision was when he received a call from Khalil Turk from Escape Music.

After a conversation about the recording of the songs, Khalil suggested that he introduced Mitchell to a few musicians that he has worked with, to make the songs sound even better as Mitchell played all instruments & vocals on the demos.

The musicians included Paul Hume (lead guitar) & Neil Ogden (drums) from classic rock bands,Demon & Lawless,
Nigel Bailey (bass) from melodic rock bands, Bailey, Lifeline & 3 Lions also, Jamie Crees (guitar) from Lawless.

All brought their individual style to the table & was evident that something very special was happening ... Dirty White Boyz was born.
They have all come together to form an allegiance of AOR/Classic/Melodic Rock & each lending their style & craft to the dynamic songs for this debut album.

DWB have tried to use all the ingredients from their rich history, Mitchell's raw, rock vocals & punchy thick riff guitars, Ogden's thunderous, rock solid drumming, Hume's flawless, majestic lead guitar licks & solos, Crees's power riffs & twin lead & Bailey's thumping, ground shaking bass lines, all of which are singers that can harmonise effortlessly.

Now with the debut album, Down & Dirty finished, it's all systems go. The album not only hits you like a freight train, it also leaves you breathless in it's a combination of melodic gems, Anthemic rockers & a few heart wrenching power ballads for good measure.
Songs that will shake the very roof off any venue, songs that will take you on an emotional rollercoaster ride & songs that will stand the test of time

Dirty White Boyz are here !!! Jump aboard this Rock train, get down & dirty & let's enjoy the ride !!!

Given that the debut album was songs mainly gathered from the past, I wasn’t sure we’d even get a second Seven album. But here it is and it’s great!
Vocalist Mick Devine as one of those ‘born for AOR’ voices and the music – even though delivered by a slightly different lineup, this is almost as good as the brilliant debut.

This time around only vocalist Mick remains, but the team of Andy Loos (bass), Fredrik Bergh (keys) and Lars Chriss (production, guitars, drums) who helped reconstruct the debut are present again, so the sound remains intact.
Up tempo Foreigner/Heartland/Signal style AOR and melodic rock is what we have here.

Light Of 1000 Eyes may be a good opener, but A Better Life is pure brilliance; while a moodier Fight has Mark Free written all over it. Other highlights include the high impact keyboard drenched Shattered; the anthemic High Hopes and the intense Last Illusion.
But that said, there’s no fillers here and folks are going to like different tracks more than others depending on mood.

It just needs to be stated that this is a very fine album indeed and a worthy sequel to the debut, if not quite as catchy, but still a great sound and a very well-produced example of classic AOR with a contemporary production.

SEVEN Storm Back With 'Shattered' Sept. 23

Escape Music Press Release / The acclaimed melodic rock outfit SEVEN return with their second album 'Shattered', out via Escape Music September 23.

Mick Devine - Lead Vocals
Lars Chriss - guitars, drums
Andy Loos - Bass
Fredrik Bergh - Keyboards
Kay Backlund - Keyboards
Guest vocals Nigel Bailey and Lin Devine

Produced and Mixed by Lars Chriss
Executive Producer : Khalil Turk
Mastered by Mike Lind

Tracks: Light Of 1000 Eyes / A Better Life / Fight / Shattered / Live This Life / Pieces Of You / Broken Dream / High Hopes / I Needed Time / Taking Over / Last Illusion

SEVEN originate from the AOR scene in the late eighties where Polydor records having been fairly successful in the U.K with the likes of
Magnum and Little Angels, set their sights on SEVEN, a relatively unknown act that had started life as a successful South African group,
reformed to hit the big time in the UK.

SEVEN toured extensively supporting an eclectic variety of acts that included the likes of Jason Donovan, Richard Marx, The Monkees and
Brother Beyond. It’s a time period that Mick Devine is keen to reminisce about, “Even though they were out and out pop gigs, we loved the
crowds and the noise. We went from pubs to opening to 3000 screaming fans in Southampton. It is a very addictive adrenaline rush. We got to
play all the top venues, which were fantastic; including Wembley Arena, the NEC, BIC, SEC and even the Royal Albert Hall. The Richard Marx
tour was definitely the best for us with a more grown up audience we were able to rock it up and truly be ourselves. It went down really
well!”

Entering the recording studios, with John Parr at the production helm, they recorded two very strong singles in the shape of “Inside Love” and
“Man with A Vision” both of which achieved moderate success in the UK.

In 2014 the original bass player Pat Davey was working alongside Robert Hart on an Escape Music album when the name SEVEN cropped up in
the conversation. It would seem that Khalil Turk was a big fan, as Devine explains, “Yeah, back in the day Khalil had really loved the band and
he got in touch to see if we would be interested in finally releasing an album,” Without too much convincing the project was born.
The production talents of Lars Chriss (who’s repertoire includes albums with Steve Overland, Chris Ousey) were enlisted to
produce the band’s debut album called ‘7’, which was released to critical acclaim and was held up as one of the “Albums of the Year” on
many lists.

SEVEN was born again!

Following the success of the first album, a passion was re-kindled within Devine & McFarlane, who began work on new material, and along
with the writing talents of Lars Chriss, Fredrik Bergh, Andy Loos, Kay Backlund and Jeff Paris, that passion was given focus and a place to
come to life. What they discovered was a well of untapped creativity that had been hidden for far too long and the songs poured out.

SEVEN ‘Shattered’ is a collection of wonderfully catchy songs that rely on clean and memorable melodies that allow Devine’s distinctive voice
to shine through. It was Devine who took the lead in writing the lyrics on this album, matching the intensity and feel of the music to deliver a
modern melodic rock album with influences ranging from hints of Foreigner in “A Better Life” and “Broken Dream”, Journey in “High Hopes”
and even traces of Magnum in “Light of 1000 Eyes” and “Last Illusion”.

The lyrical themes are drawn from a depth of life experience and observations and are heartfelt and real. The production talents of Lars
Chriss and the line up of truly great musicians, deliver an album of depth and variation which ranges from driving guitar-led tracks with
memorable riffs to melodic anthems, all backed by stunning keys, bass and standout solo’s. It is an album that is a worthy follow-up to the
critically acclaimed ‘7’.

This album represents a natural progression for SEVEN and it features 11 stunning tracks that are laden with great musical performances and
soaring vocals, and while being fresh and up to date, they have bite and edge and yet remain melodic and catchy
This is one superb follow up album that will not disappoint.

Interesting album this. Another duel-vocalist project from Escape, much like Ozone. This debut project puts vocalists Nigel Bailey (Three Lions, Bailey) together with fellow Brit vocalist Lee Small (Shy, Phenomena).
The band is rounded out by guitarist/producer Paul Hume (Demon, Lawless), drummer Steve Clarkson and keyboards from Andy Bailey (Three Lions, Bailey).

I’m not sure it works to be honest. There’s nothing wrong with the performances, both vocalists are great on their own and mix together here pretty well. The production is solid too.
But I’ve struggled with this from day one. I think the songs just aren’t strong enough. The classic rock vibe is also fairly common and done better on both Nigel Bailey’s other two bands.

The album struggles in that it’s not really hard rock, not really melodic rock, not really classic rock and not really AOR. It’s just an undefined mixture of all.
That’s not to say there aren’t some sweet spots. The groovy opener Fear No More rocks; the mid-album melodic gem Feels Like Love is probably the best of all and No His Angel’s Gone is a solid moody ballad.

Not too bad, but not enough spark for me personally. The names involved don’t match the quality of the songwriting or overall output. But fans of Bailey and Small in particular will feel a lot more positive about this.

SCREAM is the stunning debut album from British hard rock band LIFELINE
A true duet album with a classic British rock sounding that also combines songs that verge on melodic rock and hard rock  along with tunes firmly seated within the AOR genre.

SCREAM features 12 tracks packed with monstrous riffs and soaring melodies that seamlessly combine the vocal styles of Nigel and Lee without ever losing their individuality. The quality of the material combined with the first class musicianship makes this a debut album every self-respecting fan should check this out! After an introduction by Khalil Turk (Escape Music), Nigel Bailey (Three Lions, Bailey) and Lee Small (Shy, Phenomena) were determined to make an album together and share vocal duties. Paul Hume (Demon, Lawless) was approached as producer and as guitarist for the band. The guys needed a rock solid drummer and called upon Steve Clarkson, who Nigel had worked with for many years, as the man behind the drum kit. Last but not least, Andy Bailey (Three Lions, Bailey) was recruited to add keyboards.

Nigel set about writing songs for the album in late 2014 and the writing process was completed in early 2015. 'I write the type of songs that I like to listen to, be that on the heavier side or a ballad, I never set out with a particular agenda, I just picked up my guitar and waited to see what came out, although the intention was to write material that would complement both Lee's and my own vocal style.' says Nigel.

The guys gathered at Summerbank Studios in Stoke-On-Trent to commence recording and immediately realised that they were creating something special. From the groove laden, infectious rhythms of the leadoff single 'Jezebel' to the softer AOR feel of 'Feels like Love' and on to the raw driving power of title track 'Scream', this album is a must for all melodic hard rock fans!!

Coming off the back of the 3 Lions debut album earlier this year is the debut solo release from the band’s frontman and bassist Nigel Bailey.
Nigel sings (obviously) as well as playing Bass and Guitars, with Alessandro Del Vecchio producing/mixing and contributing keyboards, with fellow Italians Alessandro Mori on Drums and Mario Percudani on Guitars.

So this is a little different than the bluesier/melodic rock of 3 Lions. Long Way Down is a touch heavier and more direct in nature – earthy in nature, heavier and featuring some straight forward songs and a decent heavy guitar driven sound and a strong production.

There’s some heavier numbers like the 6 minute hard rock of In The Name Of The King; the title track Long Way Down; and the album closing, bluesy rocker Dirty Angel.
Horns appear on the uptempo Bad Reputation to mix things up a little.

More melodic tracks that could have fit 3 Lions include the best track of the album, Dirty Little Secret; the very "British" Stay and the uptempo Love Falls Down.

It’s a pretty long album, but remains fairly consistent. A little editing on the song lengths might have helped. I do think it tends to get stuck in a very similar tempo throughout. A few tracks drag a little (like Somewhere In Oslo) and I’m not sure that the material is as memorable as 3 Lions, plus the limited range, Gary Hughes styled vocals of Nigel Bailey can appear to lack variety.

But, those things said, this is a strong debut which makes a statement that Mr. Bailey is set to hang around for a while to come and the production of Alessandro Del Vecchio goes from strength to strength.

FRONTIERS MUSIC Srl SET TO
RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM FROM THREE LIONS FRONTMAN BAILEY, ENTITLED “LONG WAY DOWN”

Frontiers Music Srl is pleased to announce the release of the debut album from Bailey entitled “Long Way Down” on December 5th in Europe and December 9th in North America.

BAILEY is the new solo project masterminded by THREE LIONS frontman Nigel Bailey. Although a relatively new name on the scene, Nigel has a vast experience as both a songwriter and performer. His deal with Frontiers served to bring to light his shining talent both as a powerful vocalist and also as a songwriter. Brand new compositions along with some material written over the years have been combined to complete an exciting solo debut. “I wrote the bulk of the album songs between 2011 and mid 2012” says Nigel. “The plan was to write songs with no particular influences in mind. I have always loved rock music and wrote songs as they came to me. I didn’t have a particular style in mind which is reflected in the various styles on the record.”

With some similarities to THREE LIONS in terms of influences, BAILEY is slightly heavier and more varied in its approach whilst still maintaining the edge and the trademark melodies of Classic British Hard Rock tradition. “If pushed, I would say that In The Name Of The King, Long Way Down and Stay are my personal favourites and show the variety in my writing and vocal style” tells Nigel.  This record will be a surprise for many and an absolute must for all British Melodic Hard Rock fans!

You can have a glimpse of BAILEY’s debut album by viewing the EPK via this link: youtu.be/DIW83Q5w71w

BAILEY will also have a debut live FREE show on December 4th at The Coniston live music venue in Bradford, UK. Nigel will be performing songs from the album as well as some surprises along with his bandmates and special friends!

“Long Way Down” tracklisting includes: Feed The Flames; In The Name Of The King; Dirty Little Secret; Bad Reputation; Stay; Somewhere In Oslo; Long Way Down; Spend The Night; Love Falls Down; Ticket To Yesterday; Dirty Angel.
