Daniel Flores: Sweden's Man Of The Moment

Daniel, you are fast becoming the go-to man for session drum work, so there's a few tings to cover here. But first and foremost, we are here to promote your new Mind's Eye album Walking On H20.
The album is a concept album about nothing less than human evolution.
Couldn't you find anything more light and fluffy to write about?!!! :)

Hahahaha Well the topic of world terror had already been taken by George Bush so Human evolution has the only theme left for me… ;-)
Seriously, I thought I was a great lyrical theme with the potential of being dramatic and serious at the same time. I mean who dares to write about something like Human evolution? Who dares to say out loud that Darwin's evolution theory has huge wholes in its socket? I wanted to create some discussions about these facts, its fun to provoke feelings into people's minds. I am a guy who likes to provoke, it's so much funnier than to be on the safe side. Still, it's only music.
That's why I chose the theme, to encourage people and at the same time still make some good old entertainment with it. You said it yourself “commercially accessible” songs. Because even though it's a serious matter it's still just entertainment.

Tell us about the aspects behind the writing on the album and what draws you to the subject matter?
We used to write everything together, everyone in a room back when we where younger. At this point of where we are today there is no time to get the three of us in the same room for even one hour… I'm not kidding. Knowing these difficultness and facts, what I did was write everything (expect a couple of songs where I co-wrote with Johan/guitars) I wrote the lyrics during the buss ride to the studio and back. I was anyway the one with the vision of doing an album like this. I had read some books that I really liked and knew exactly witch songs and arrangements I wanted to include in the production. Everything came to me in a long period of time though. One could say I have been writing this album since 2003 as that's when I started to do some of the music for “Walking on H2O”.

How about the journey through the tracks on the album. Where does the story start and finish?
As you already might have noticed, the story is pretty tricky to get in to. I don't want to give away too much here but I would say it starts with a kid in school. School really is the first steps we take before growing up and seeing the world with our own eyes and it's where we learn how things “work” later in real life. The story ends sadly… it ends with death or as in this case it's uncertain death. There is nothing worse than dying for a lost cause, asking yourself until the very end why? That's how this album ends. In the middle there are lots of things we go trough as human beings, there stuff about drugs, deception, Marriage. Then there are also some big questions, asking who are we? and why are we here?, you know the big ones. It's all done in the spirit of good entertainment though, so it's not entirely a strictly facts story/album in that meaning.

What is your personal favourite song or message of the album?
My Personal favourite would be the song about the pyramids of giza song “Sahara in an Hourglass”. It's a bout how we worship monuments and the pyramids are worshiped around the world by a huge amount of people. The strange thing is that there is no real reason at all to why people worship these monuments. Even though they are huge and nobody still really knows who built them, it's still amazing to me how these pyramids keep on being the symbol of life on other planets to us.
The story of Sahara in an hourglass is about a archaeologist who falls in love with the pyramids of Giza and starts to worship them. In the end he goes crazy imagining him self being a Pharaoh.
Why I like it? Well, I think this is the first song where I actually could get away with making a dramatic and cinematic song still being very accessible to lot's of people. The closest I have ever come to making the sound sonically close to what I have heard in my mind. It's almost like listening to a movie, people keep telling me.
Mission accomplished.

It is the band's first album in 4 years. Why did things fall into place to get the album out now?
Mainly because we where waiting for our former guitarist Fredrik to make up his mind about if he wanted to do more albums or not. That's took some soul searching I guess, for both of us actually. When we got the news that he didn't want to do another album we where actually thinking of putting the gloves on the shell and call it a day but luckily my wife and many other supporters of the band made me change my mind, to actually continue without him. We miss Fredrik but it seems like we are entering a new chapter in the Mind's Eye book and we will continue as a trio for as long as we can. The change has actually tided the knot around us and we have become a stronger force because of it.
Another fact was that Johan and Andreas didn't have the time to write music for a Mind's Eye Cd, these guys have barely time to go to the John... hahaha
So I took the steering wheel and made what I could out of my experiences as a producer and session musician.
I'm happy being the captain of the ship but the boat would never move without the AMAZING help from both Andreas and Johan.

Although progressive and complex, the overall record remains very accessible due to some great melodies within. What is more important - sounding musically cleaver or delivering something commercial listeners can hook onto?
What drive's me to make good music is both of these elements. Though I would say that the older I get the less important becomes the fact of being accepted as a virtuoso on drums or whatever. I think Johan and me feel the same in this aspect. Both Johan and I have been part of many albums and we don't really need the recognition anymore. It's fun and all when we get it but it's far from what we are looking for in what we do as musicians. If we enhance the music in some way, then GREAT! But if we don't and we just shine trough as “great instrumentalists” who don't fit the music, it's a total failure.
Hooks are what it's all about I think. Hooks is such a large word when you think about it as it can mean so many different things when it comes to make music. I'm tired of making music for a certain kind of man/woman. Today I make music for everyone who enjoys music coming from a couple of loudspeakers.

In fact, I think your bio answers the question with this statement: "The music is still progressive but not in a technical level. Instead Mind's Eye rather shows their strength as songwriters, still using melodies and hooks as their strongest weapons..."
Yeah! Believe me, we have been trough the tossing and wearing out of the lightning fast double bass and machine gun triplets on our instruments in the beginning, quickly getting to a point where we felt there was no point in continuing like that. Let's face it! Anyone can learn how to play an instrument and impress a crowd with the coolest shops or fill-ins! That's all about discipline and discipline doesn't appeal to most people, talent and true emotions are what appeals to people.
If the song doesn't need it why use it? It's what the song tells you to do! Still there is plenty of shops of anyone looking for them in our new album, the difference here is that they are not in your face all the time as we use them only when needed. It all comes down to maturing and that takes time, instead of pushing it away we have embraced it and called it our own.

I think you guys have actually done a good job of delivering both. What part does each of the three of you play in the writing and then recording of the album?
Thank you! It's different from record to record. As I said before the song writing rested on my shoulders this time. Though the other guys had lot's to say about the ideas I cast in front of them. It still feels like a true Mind's Eye record. I have always been heavily involved in the writing of Mind's Eye and so this was a natural steep for me. I usually start by going trough the arrangements and keyboards ending up with arranging all the backing vocals on the entire album. That's my part. Johan played and arranged all the guitars with me. This is the first time I've had so much input in the guitar department and Johan and I are really proud of the outcome. Johan also handled the bass. Andreas comes in and lays his vocals. 99% of the melodies are already worked out so his job becomes very easy when recording. He often comments on the lyrics and ending of the melodies, often when he sings them they become 100% better. Andreas also has a great feeling in his voice and is a perfect match for the music. This is the same way me Andreas worked in his first solo release “Forever endeavour” released on MTM last year.

I very much enjoyed yours and Andreas' work on the Novak album in 2004. A tremendous slice of European commercial melodic rock.
Great! Thanks! Andreas and I enjoyed it too! It was a great outcome for me as I love melodic rock. Bands like Giant and Harem Scarem are some of the best song writers in the world. The problem with Novak was maybe that it was not heavy enough for people and not soft enough for others… Here we where trying to compromise and failure was around the corner… I am really proud of this record but I'm sad that it fell down the cracks between hard rock and melodic rock.

Any plans for a follow-up there?
I actually called Andreas the other day asking the same question. All I can say is that we have some songs ready for a new album but we are having lots of trouble to hook up and write songs together. Andreas had just received a second son and I think his priorities are at home for the moment. Maybe after we finished the new Mind's Eye album? I don't know really… Music like this doesn't sell like it used too and it feels like all the hard work going into it does not pay enough in the end of the day. Though I think we'll give it another try.

How did you get into session work in the last few years?
That just fell on my knees right after the first Mind's Eye album. People who had heard my work where interested in using me for their albums. Back then I was not interested in doing it as I didn't want to do anything outside of Mind's Eye, none of us actually would back then. After the third album “A work of art” we where all exhausted of working together and then we decided to take a long break from Mind's Eye. I didn't know what to do. Mind's Eye was all I had! So I started calling some of the people who wanted me on their albums. I started with a band called ZOOL (former Mohani Moana) an album that I recorded in 4 hours (including a one hour lunch and half an hour preproduction, so it's in fact 2 and half hours). I guess the rumour spread from there. I had been working as a sound engineering teacher in a college here in Stockholm and after a half year doing sessions and working as an engineer I left teaching and started to make sessions a full time work. It's been a great 4 years since I made that decision. Guess I'm living my dream.

As I stated, you seem to be the man of the hour there in Sweden, it must be nice to be in such a position...
I'm really honoured to be able to do this fulltime as there so many other drummers out there without the same possibilities as me. Sweden is a small country when it comes to recording sessions and it's not difficult to be first call drummer in any kind of style. There are not that many “progressive session drummers” in the world as the work is twice or three times as hard if you compare to a normal session. I do both and that's why I earned my reputation. I also have a studio where I record and so it's much easier to bring me in rather than working with other guys without the same possibilities.

Naturally one has to work hard to be in such a position - so a little about your good self.
How did you get into drumming in the first place and what influences/idols drew you into it?

Drumming was always a part of me I just didn't know what to call it. Even since I was a young kid I had always been drumming on plates and making rhythms with my mouth. In my teens a friend brought me to this studio where he was studying engineering and he showed me a set of drums. I was amazed and from the first time I played them drums I was hooked. Then I discovered Genesis and Phil Collins. That guy really woke up my drumming and drove it to another level.
Later I of course discovered Rod Morgenstein, Neil Peart, Jeff Porcaro, David Huff.
But I still feel like Phil Collins is the only guy who has achieved professional personality in his drumming and that's my goal as a drummer, or at least one of them ;-)

Do you think your playing might in turn influence some kids to do the same thing and take up drumming? Do you have much contact with young musicians in Sweden?
You know, I really hope I do wake up some kid from sleeping and waking up to MTV everyday. I wished I could make room for discipline in kid's performances today but school is too soft on them. Teachers don't really care about how good they become and most of the new generation of musicians are in my mind weak players. I think my generation might have something to do with it as we educated ourselves too much and didn't care about the practical part of music. Also, there was too many guys who where brainwashed by the industry of teen pop idols... These guys where great musicians but all their heads turned around for the Euros and dollars, making music for kids instead of for them selves. I still think that songwriters and choreographers are the evil that happened to this business hahahaha
Make music but play and sing it your self or with somebody you know that will express the same feelings you want to.
When I was teaching in school I meet allot of kids and I was really floored by the weakness of their singing and playing. They could be studying in college still trying to learn a C scale, some didn't know it to save their lives… it's all just sad really.

Saying that - you are not too old yourself!! In same cases you are working with your peers. Can that be an intimidating atmosphere?
Well it can be and it was for me for a while but then I realized something, everybody is just human. First time I worked with Tommy Denander it was really intimidating but after I while I got the hang of it. Same case with Goran Edman, Thomas Wikstrom ext…
We are all just human beings you know. In the end of the day it's all just fun. I have to mention there are plenty of assholes out there and often the biggest asses are the ones who can't play to save their lives…
I have learned to control my self in a room full of talent and often when I know someone great is in the room it really makes me play even better. Absorbing the talent from the one who has enough to fill up the entire room.

I'll ask you about a few of your more prominent recent associations...your thoughts please -
Sure! shoot!

Starting with Chris Catena - You have worked a lot with Chris and also on his new band Teenage Rampage...
Chris is a great friend of mine and he has many ships in the sea. He is an aggressive singer with huge talent. Teenage rampage might be the one act that will give Chris the push that he needs and to get the recognition for what he does. This is Melodic metal with a raw edge. It's still in the works.

Xsaviour - Is it safe to say some didn't get this project (not sure I did either!!)
Yeah no one got this one! I'm not sure even if I did… hahahaha I was a huge part of this album. I am still very pleased with how it came out but I also knew instantly that this album will be a love or hate album. One good thing that came out of this was the friendship with Goran. He is an amazing singer and the perfect match for this kind of music. Sadly this was a one trick monkey and I have left it for good.

Moonstone…
Matteo Fillipini, the mastermind behind this project called me up and wanted me to record a couple of songs. It has some of the best 70's and 80's musicians on this album and in that sense it's a special album. For me it was plain pleasure to be part of it. A must for all Deep purple and Rainbow fans.

Faro -
Who can resist Chity's great voice? My friend Chity Somapala (Firewind, Avalon) called me up and asked me if I wanted to play drums on a melodic rock album, and when I told him that I loved “melodic rock” he was amazed as he had only hears me play with progressive rock bands. He even told me during rehearsals in Germany that he didn't expect me to play this style that well… Man I love this! The music back then was fantastic! I think Chity and Frank did a great job with it, I just wish they had stayed together to make the chemistry grow even more…

Orange Crush - I'm a fan of what I have heard - any updates?
This band has one of the best melodic rock singers I ever had the pleasure to be working with. The band is Daniel Palmqvist (who is releasing his first solo album “A landscape made from dreams” on Lion Music in June) and “Pedestrians of Blue singer” Johannes Stole. We are in fact going in the studio to record some more songs in fall just to do a follow of on the 5 already recorded songs. We might pull out an album and shop it to different labels, let's see what the hands of time will come up with.

And coming up is a few interesting things mate. You mention you are working on new projects with Thomas Wikstrom and Goran Edman among others. Anything you can mention about these yet?
Well, both are solo albums and both have great ideas for it. Both are very different though. The problem is again “time” here... typical… No release date is set but from what I have heard it's going to be a couple of monsters, hard to stop.
Goran will be first up I think. He is going for that Pink Floyd style.

Several tribute albums there too - what tracks?
Mind's Eye is doing the song “Hysteria” for a Def Leppard tribute, we also did a Queensrÿche tribute a long time ago doing the song “I Will Remember”. I also recorded tributes for a Gary Moore, Deep Purple, Guns And Roses, Kiss… I do as many as I can with bands I love.

Among the credits listed on your site and bio are several different styles of playing - progressive, metal, alternative, AOR...
How hard is it to switch the styles without blending them. What is required of you to get in the right mindset?

I see my self as an actor fitting in for a role in a film. I can't always play my own character and it's more fun switching from project to project, like a chameleon if you will. With Mind's Eye I get enough out of my self so when doing a session I tend to go for what the song requires rather than on what I want the song to have.
I am a guy who gets easily bored and I can't stay for long in the same place… The trick is to get your self in the mind of the director or in this case the composer. What sort of plan does he have, where do I fit on this whole picture? Asking questions like that will get you far. The chemistry and music man ship will later anyway take over and elevate the album or song to its righteous place.
It's hard to get inside someone's brain if you don't meet him. In my case when I do sessions with people that I speak with trough the internet I do an awful lot of research on them. Finally when I speak with them over the phone I know where they come from and what they need from me as a drummer. People are usually very surprised to hear that I know so much about them, but that's just me you know trying to get to know the musician that I am working with.
I also do something witch still shocks allot of people. I ask for the lyrics and ask them to tell me what the song is about. This helps me a great deal when playing emotionally assessable songs. Knowing what the lyrics say helps me allot in my work as it helps me to paint the right colours in the right moment.
My ambition and goal is an artistic one and I tend to keep on that line straight out the song or album.

And what plans are there for Mind's Eye at this early stage after the current album has been released?
Right now we are waiting and seeing what the sales numbers tells us to do. We will probably try to go to the studio in late May for a follow up as it seams impossible to get this band out on tour right now. That may change though as it's only a financial question to why we can't go out.

Also among your credits is some work for an Idol type program Fame Factory. What is your take on this kind of musical platform for artists/singers to launch themselves via?
Some of it is for the artist good but most of these programs just kill people's careers. I would anyway say to people to stay away from this kind of programs or private life consuming shows. You get very little out of it and there is very little respect from the REAL musicians out there. Most people I know who have used this kinds of shows as a steeping stone to get somewhere have only failed and still are doing zero or playing “Sweet home Alabama” to get food on the table. The question is “do you really want your 15 minutes of fame to be like this?” I think not, but still there are jug heads out there thinking not…

Anything else that you would like to plug Daniel and/or anything you would like to add?
We have another Mind's Eye release coming out next year. During the last couple of months we have been writing the last songs and we have now 13 songs for a new album and we can only promise you that it's going to be something very different. Maybe something that has never been done in the melodic rock or progressive rock community before. Something for everyone!
The story is about an assassin, the people who he murdered and why he did it. But that's not all! We will also add a DVD with the recordings in the studio “The making of” so to speak, a video of one song and one thing more, that will stay a secret until the release date. In time we will let all you guys know what we are up to.
I am awe fully exited about this release and I have started to get new equipment to my studio to get the production where I want, top notch! I am arming my self to the teeth.
Also, check out some of my performances in the some new releases with: Fatal Force, Moonstone, Deacon Street, Hubi Meisel, Wasai, Speedy Gonzales, Marko Pavic, Tears of Anger and of course Mind's Eye. Please check out our website for further news: www.roundrec.com and www.danielflores.net
It's been a pleasure talking to you Andrew. Many thanks from me and the band for being able to have us here in the great melodicrock.com!

FIRST SIGNAL Announce New Album ‘Line Of Fire’ Out May 17

After two critical and fan acclaimed albums, First Signal are returning with a new studio album, "Line Of Fire". First single, "Tonight We Are The Only" has been released today with an accompanying video.

First Signal is the musical union between Harem Scarem band vocalist Harry Hess and Swedish drummer/producer Daniel Flores. Of their third collaboration together, Hess says, "once again it was a pure pleasure to be working on these songs. Daniel made it easy on me...just concentrating on being the singer is a luxury that I enjoyed immensely." Flores adds, "as a huge fan of Harem Scarem, I'm still asking people to pinch me to see if I'm still awake. Harry and his band made some of the most classic AOR and rock records ever, so I feel a responsibility to give the fans as close as possible to the quality that Harry continuously delivers with either his own solo work and Harem Scarem. Something the audience has certainly come to expect by now. I think the fans will love this one.”

Of the song songs on the record, Hess tells "there were three songs that I recommended to be included on the record. The first was “Born To Be A Rebel," which was a co-write that I did with Stan Meissner way back in 1989 and the other two were Stan Meissner songs “Walk Through The Fire” and “Never Look Back”. I have always loved these two songs and thought they were perfect for this project. Between Serafino (Perugino, President of Frontiers), Daniel, and myself we chose the rest of the songs from many great writers, whose songwriting fit perfectly in the First Signal vision." Flores says, "once again Harry and I worked closely with Serafino to find the perfect songs. It took about four months to find these gems. The writers are from all over the world and they all gave us their best songs. Harry's legacy had everyone, let's say, working at their best.”

Flores concludes, "there is more depth and structure now. The feel was right on the last record, but we hadn't found our groove yet. On this one Harry sings, in my opinion, like he has never done before. The audience will be surprised and delighted with his range and charisma here. The overall sound is heavier, but at the same time more melodic and more organic. I'm for sure really proud of the outcome.”

First Signal was first brought to life in 2010 when Frontiers President Serafino Perugino presented Harem Scarem singer Harry Hess with some melodic rock songs he thought would be a perfect fit for Harry to put his inimitable vocals on. The tunes specifically harkened back to the magic of the Harem Scarem sound, who at the time were on a hiatus. The project's self-titled debut was greeted with excellent reviews and enthusiasm from the melodic rock crowd, planting the seed for this to be more than a one-off.

Harem Scarem started up again after the release of the First Signal debut, but Harry was still wanting to go back and sing some excellent melodic rock songs that he had from various songwriters under the First Signal banner. The idea of a second First Signal album started to become realized and with the help of Swedish producer Daniel Flores (FIND ME, THE MURDER OF MY SWEET, etc.), the second record, "One Step Over The Line" started to take shape. Once again, the album was greeted with enthusiastic responses and acclaim from the fans and press alike upon release. So, it was a no-brainer to decide to release a new record and once again Daniel Flores teamed up with Michael Palace (guitars) and Johan Niemann (bass) and provided the basic tracks which Harry Hess and Darren Smith (background vocals) completed in their studio in Canada.

First Signal's third album “Line Of Fire” is once again a total delight for AOR and melodic rock fans and a contender for AOR album of the year! And be sure to follow First Signal on the newly launched Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/firstsignalband/

Toby Hitchcock is one of the voices of the last decade or so. Since his Pride Of Lions debut, his powerful tenor has been front and centre for some of the genre’s best anthems and most epic ballads. Any Toby Hitchcock is good Toby Hitchcock.

And for the most part, this album is no different. Songs are delivered by the who’s who of the AOR scene, with at least another 4-5 classic songs here – Queen Untouchable, Promise Me, No Surrender and This Is Our World. Man, the guy can sing.

I like that a lot of the album is uptempo and flows at a pretty hectic pace. I don’t think this is as strong as Toby’s Erik Martensson helmed debut. Even though this album is also a Swedish production, the differences are quite stark. Reckoning sounds firmly planted in the 80s, with the keyboards and production style a more distinct European in flavour.
The songs are enjoyable but not to the same level as the debut or Pride Of Lions.

There is one issue that desperately needs to be addressed. The keyboards. We need to talk about the keyboards.

As has been the case with all Daniel Flores productions, the keyboards dominate. They are the highest element in the mix, aside from vocals and there are just way too many layers of them. There is no letup in the sonic bombardment. There needs to be more space for the rest of the instrumentation to breathe. Even during guitar solos the keyboards still dominate.

I like Daniel a lot – very talented and sweet guy – but there must be an intervention. The keyboards are simply overbearing, and the production style is becoming very repetitive. Find Me (all 3), the second First Signal album, the Palace debut, Cry Of Dawn and now Toby Hitchcock – largely all sound the same. So moving forward I hope some individual personality can be infused into these projects. And that's the main essence of what's missing here - its own personality.

That said, there’s still plenty to enjoy and Toby’s vocals are powerful, emotional and totally immersive. Fans of Find Me, Daniel’s other AOR work and 80s keyboard melodic rock will enjoy.

FIND ME Third Album 'Angels In Blue' Gets Feb 22 Release

FIRST SINGLE, "NO TEARS IN PARADISE" OUT NOW

FIND ME have announced that their third album, "Angels In Blue" will be released on February 22, 2019. The band has also released the first single and video from the album, "No Tears In Paradise”.

Vocalist Robbie LaBlanc on the new album: "I really like our first album, but I like "Dark Angel" better than the first one. I have to say that I love our new one the best of all three so far. I hope everyone else agrees, haha. There are some really amazing songs on this record and Daniel stripped the production down a bit on this one, which I really like. I had a lot of fun on this album vocally and I think you’ll hear that in the tracks. They were a joy to sing and there wasn’t one key change on any demo that was presented. It was like the songs were written right for me to sing them. Really, really cool!"

Songwriter, drummer, and producer Daniel Flores adds, "Like always, everything is built around Robbie's voice and range. Carefully structuring all arrangements around the melodies, crafting a powerhouse for every song. I think we have nailed down what that means for Find Me's melodic rock approach. Third time's the charm!"

Of tracks from the album they are particularly fond of, Flores says, "As a producer I tend to fall in love with all songs on the records we do, but the songs 'Desperate Dreams' and 'No Tears In Paradise' are two favorites." With LaBlanc adding, that "'Waiting For A Lifetime' and 'Show Me What You’d Die For' are two that quickly stand out in my mind as favorites. 'No Tears in Paradise' as well. I love our cover of 'Desperate Dreams' by Survivor, I thought it came out really nice and hopefully a great tribute to Jimi Jamison."

FIND ME is an ongoing collaboration between Swedish musician, songwriter and producer Daniel Flores (Issa, The Murder of My Sweet) and singer Robbie LaBlanc from Blanc Faces. The partnership was put together by Frontiers President, Serafino Perugino with a vision to unleash yet another AOR behemoth from the label. Mission accomplished! FIND ME’s debut album, “Wings of Love” and the follow-up release “Dark Angel” were greeted with rave fan and critical reviews, with fans left begging for more music from the duo. No demand could have been easier to fulfill as Daniel and Robbie simply love working together. The result of their latest collaboration is “Angels In Blue”. Once again, a delightful and massive melodic rock album full of mighty, anthemic AOR songs with Robbie’s soaring lead vocals and amazing performances from Daniel Flores and guitarist Philip Lindstrand. Sonically, this powerhouse album sits in between the classic sound of Journey and Giant and newcomers like W.E.T and Eclipse. Yet another unmissable album for the Melodic Rock/AOR crowd from Frontiers.

"Robbie and I really hope you can hear the sweat and tears we have endured during the making of this record. Every finished record is a miracle in the making and this one in particular was hard to make. Thank God it all came through in the end. This is for you guys, the fans who make my work feel like a walk in the park everyday," says Flores.

"I’m really excited Find Me's third album is coming out. I hope the fans love it and I want to express my great respect to all the guys in the band: Phil, Michael, Daniel, Johnny, Rolf, Soren, and all the great writers like Alessandro Del Vecchio and Michael Palace. What a great bunch of musicians and talented, talented people. I am very lucky to be involved with such beautiful and talented people. God bless you all," concludes LaBlanc.

TOBY HITCHCOCK Back With 'Reckoning Jan 25

Frontiers Music Srl announces the release of TOBY HITCHCOCK's second solo album, “Reckoning” on January 25, 2019.

First single and music video, "Promise Me" out now!

Powerhouse American vocalist Toby Hitchcock is back with a brand new solo album, “Reckoning”. The album was written and produced in collaboration with Swedish producer Daniel Flores (Find Me, The Murder of My Sweet). Toby first came to the attention of melodic rock fans when former Survivor founding member Jim Peterik hand-picked him to be the lead singer for Pride Of Lions, the band that would mark Jim's return to the rock scene.

With Pride of Lions, Toby has sung on five studio albums which are considered true classics among the melodic rock/AOR faithful. Often compared to Bobby Kimball (Toto), Jimi Jamison (Survivor), and Lou Gramm (Foreigner), Hitchcock’s voice has the depth, feeling and the feel of each of them, while still keeping his own identity and trademark.

When Pride of Lions took a small hiatus in 2011, Toby took the opportunity to hook up with Swedish songwriter/producer Erik Martensson (Eclipse, W.E.T., Ammunition) for his first solo album, “Mercury’s Down.” The album was a display of the talent of the two young guns, with Toby showing an unbelievable set of pipes on some heavier material, specially penned for him by Martensson.
In 2017, work on a new solo album started with Toby once again looking to Sweden for another exciting collaboration. Swedish producer Daniel Flores (Find Me, The Murder Of My Sweet) crafted a superb set of songs that are an absolute AOR gem of an album.

Toby Hitchcock says: “Being able to record my second solo album was a big step for me. I didn’t want to be a “one hit wonder” type of artist. So I’m very thankful for the opportunity to record a sophomore album. Working on my own solo record is really a great way for me to be creative on my own, so it’s very satisfying, and I love the feeling. Both of my solo projects were produced by different artists. So they feel completely different. This is a great thing for music lovers, as it brings a different vibe. This allows me to really explore my vocals and just have a great time doing it. Both albums have been amazing to work on and I couldn’t be happier."

“Reckoning” is a must hear release for all melodic rock/AOR fans out there. Buckle up and enjoy the ride!

PALACE Delivers 'Binary Music' December 7

Palace, the brainchild of Swedish musician Michael Palace, will release their second album, "Binary Music" on December 7, 2018. Today, the band has released the first taste of music from the album in the form of single "To Have And To Hold".

Palace is a Swedish melodic rock band founded by lead singer and multi-instrumentalist Michael Palace. Heavily influenced by 80’s imagery and sounds, Palace delivers a massive melodic rock/AOR sound unlike you’ve ever heard before. With layers of keyboards, Palace deliver a heavier sound than most in the genre, with guitars a dominating feature. Swirling keyboards, layers of guitars, and fast moving 80’s themed melodic hard rock is what is on offer on “Binary Music”. After the very warm reception of the debut album, ”Master Of The Universe”, Michael was very excited to get to work on the follow up and face the challenges that came with it. ”I wanted to make an album that will give the fans even more of what they enjoyed the last time around, all the while staying creative and not shying away from new musical ideas,” he says.

Michael Palace began working with Frontiers as a songwriter and guitar player for First Signal (featuring Harry Hess of Harem Scarem fame), Cry of Dawn (with Goran Edman), Kryptonite (featuring Jakob Samuel of The Poodles), and Toby Hitchcock.

The successful collaborations led to a worldwide record deal with Frontiers for his own musical output. Then the subsequent success of ”Master Of The Universe” opened up even more opportunities for Michael to grow as a musician outside of Palace, appearing on many releases as a guitar player, songwriter, and at times, producer. Despite his young age, Michael Palace has accumulated a wealth of experience playing live and recording in the studio with several different acts in addition to the aforementioned acts and including Code Red, Jim Jidhed, Erika, Hank Erix, Find Me (Featuring Robbie LeBlanc) and Big Time to name a few.

”Since the release of the first album, I’ve had the chance to be involved in a lot of cool musical projects and made more music in two years than I’ve made in my whole life. It has been a fantastic learning experience and I’ve brought a lot of that new gained knowledge into the making of ”Binary Music”. I produced the new album with the guidance from my good friend and mentor Daniel Flores (Find Me, First Signal, The Murder Of My Sweet), and I can’t wait to produce more albums in the future," Michael explains.

We’re very excited to announce the signing of RIAN – a melodic hard rock trio from Stockholm.

RIAN’s melodic hard rock sound is a unique combination of 80s AOR with a modern American rock sound.

MRR is very excited to launch the band's debut single, the lead song and title track, 'Out Of The Darkness' with this official video for the song:

RIAN - 'Out Of The Darkness' Debut Album ($15 + $5 shipping worldwide) Out July 22 (Pre-orders ship early)

RIAN is:
Richard Andermyr: Vocals, Guitar
Jan Johansson: Drums
Jonas Melin: Bass

The guys have spent the last year working on their debut album ‘Out Of The Darkness’ with producer Daniel Flores (Mind’s Eye, Find Me, The Murder of My Sweet). Frontman Richard Andermyr was a fan of Daniel’s work and wanted to see if he could imagine mixing their recordings. After listening to the demos, he instantly understood the potential and said that he was ready to not only to mix, but also to produce and record their album.

The result is ‘Out Of The Darkness’, a powerful, melodic hard rock record that is filled with hooks, harmonies and a gritty edge that gives them an original sound.
Their influences are many, including Bon Jovi, Chicago, Dokken, FM, Gary Moore, Giant, Journey, Metallica, Skid Row, Toto, Van Halen, Warrant, Whitesnake and Winger.

Richard Andermyr discovered his songwriting skills in the late 90s. In 2000 he moved to the USA for studies and teamed up with metal band Black Prizm. Back in Sweden Richard formed the hard rock band Whisperwave, who reached the finals in the Emergenza Festival 2 years in a row and were invited by Europe’s Ian Haugland to play live on the Swedish radio station “Rockklassiker”.

After spending some years playing covers, writing new material and building up his home studio, Richard teamed up with drummer Jan Johansson (Flower Punch, Kitto) in a new cover band. The musical connection was instant. Jan having heard some of Richard’s recordings, convinced him they needed to quit the cover scene and focus on original melodic hard rock. After auditioning several bassists, they found the right bass player in Jonas Melin (Asparagus, U R in Hot Water) and the lineup was complete.

The guys rehearsed and recorded demos in Richard’s basement; in the beginning of 2016 they started to see a strong album forming. They were right.

RIAN’s powerful debut album will be released worldwide on July 22 via MRR.

A video for RIAN’s title track ‘Out Of The Darkness’ will debut in the coming weeks.

THE MURDER OF MY SWEET Deliver 'Echoes Of The Aftermath' in January

Frontiers Music Srl is pleased to announce the release of The Murder of My Sweet's fourth studio album, 'Echoes of the Aftermath' on January 27th, 2017!

2015 saw The Murder Of My Sweet reunite with their original label home, Frontiers for the release of their concept album 'Beth Out of Hell', a magnificent album that was described as '[a]lmost Wagnerian in style' (Sonic Cathedral) and favorably compared to such masterpieces as Queensr'che's 'Operation: Mindcrime' by the UK's Powerplay Rock and Metal Magazine.

The new album 'Echoes of the Aftermath' musically follows on the heels of the previous record, with a more straight ahead songwriting approach, but still offering the symphonic and cinematic elements the band is now well known for. 'Echoes of the Aftermath' showcases a Nordic sound that the members of the band grew up listening to and lyrically takes on issues in tune with our modern day life.

Drummer/producer Daniel Flores says: 'During the process of writing "Beth out of Hell" with Angelica, I came up with lots of riffs, melodies and music that didn't necessarily fit the concept of the album. The inspiration and creative buzz from those songwriting sessions stayed with us and helped us come up with a new album very quickly. And of course the warm reception from fans and media had a helping hand too. I'm personally also really proud of the sonic impact of this record, I've learnt so much during these past years working with Frontiers and I'm so glad I can showcase this in full force on this album. The guys in the band are feeling very creative these days and thanks to the fans we are able to give you our "Echoes of the Aftermath!'

Singer Angelica Rylin adds: "For me, the writing process for this album became a way to reconnect with my Nordic roots. I've always been a fan of John Bauer (Swedish painter and illustrator) and his portraits of Swedish folklore and fairy tales was a big inspiration for me. And it was a nice break from "Beth", who had become such a big part of my life for a very long time."

Tour dates are planned in support of the album. Be sure to catch The Murder of My Sweet when they play in a town near you!

1. Sleeping Giant
2. Personal Hell
3. Racing Heart
4. Cry Wolf

Cry Of Dawn is the feature vehicle for Swedish vocalist great Goran Edman, this time partnering with one of Frontiers Records’ in-house producers, Daniel Flores (Find Me, Murder Of My Sweet). Daniel has had a busy year, with First Signal and Palace already under his belt and Toby Hitchcock still to come.

I’ve never found a Goran Edman album I don’t like and this is no different. He is one of those vocalists that just delivers time after time and it hardly needs stating that he sounds a million dollars here again. Flores again enlists Michael Palace to supply guitars, so it’s not surprising to find the musical bed of this project very similar to those others just mentioned.

Cry Of Dawn’s musical mission is not too far removed from that of Street Talk which he also fronts.
It’s not very often I’ll say this – but this time around there are too many keyboards. The absolute saturation of swirling keys on every track is just too much. There’s not enough room for the songs to breathe in my opinion.

Of course Edman does a killer job and most of the songs are pretty catchy. There’s plenty to like about the opener Chance and the slightly heavier Tell It To My Heart has a great bridge then chorus hook.
Light A Light and Can’t Go On are both very Street Talk in their sound and again feature killer choruses.
Hands Around My Heart is a beautiful ballad, but slightly overdone with the keyboards again.

I can’t stand the chorus in the second track Listen To Me, which is a shame, that ultra high vocal just grates on me. It’s probably the only weaker track here, there are others that don’t stand out as much as others, but nothing forgettable.

I love the vocals, I really love a few of the songs and the consistency of the album is a credit to the songwriters. I’m not so much a fan of the production style. As stated, I think the keyboards are way overdone and there’s not enough individual character in the album to make it stand out as a new band to rival those that came before them.
If you have the last First Signal and Find Me releases, you know exactly how this is going to sound. It’s good, but not quite as good as expected.

Palace is another new Swedish discovery for Frontiers Records and the world. Primarily the band is formed and performed by Michael Palace, credited as vocalist and guitarist as well as co-producer alongside one of Frontiers’ go to guys – Daniel Flores.
The 4 piece band is essentially for live performances, the studio credits behind this album assign Michael Palace to vocals, guitars, bass and keyboards and Daniel Flores drums and additional keyboards.

Much like other newcomers Cruzh, Palace is a pure 80s outfit, heavily reliant on keyboards, but delivering a heavier sound overall with guitars the more dominating feature.
Swirling keyboards, layers of guitars and fast moving 80s themed melodic hard rock is the order of the day, wrapped in a very tight Flores production.

Some of the songs really do trade off the glory days of 80s rock, but with enough power to sound fresh today. Fans of Brother Firetribe will delight in such songs as the massive anthem Part Of Me and Cool Runnin’; while the ballad Rules Of The Game is one of the year’s best.
However, I think the 3 best tracks of all are the final 3.
She Said It’s Over is a is a glorious little moody anthem with a killer hook; Stranger’s Eyes is a smooth slice of Street Talk styled AOR and Young Wild Free is a bubbly, feel good anthem to close out the album in mid-80s style.

Highlight of the month I think. A very strong debut featuring a few songs that have end of year Best Of qualities. Michael Palace has a very likable voice and Daniel Flores again delivers in the produces chair. Revised sequencing might even add another point or two.

Frontiers Music Srl is pleased to present CRY OF DAWN, a new melodic rock/AOR project featuring Goran Edman on all lead vocals. The self-titled debut album will be released on September 23rd.

Over the years, Goran Edman's unique vocal style has been showcased in numerous genres including neoclassic metal, progressive rock, and AOR, just to name a few. His vocal stylings can be found on records by John Norum, Yngwie Malmsteen, Brazen Abbot, and Glory, among others.
CRY OF DAWN is Goran Edman's latest musical adventure: a straight ahead AOR / melodic rock album which highlights his amazing vocal abilities on superb songs written especially for him by the likes of Michael Palace (Palace, First Signal, Kryptonite), Steve Newman, Alessandro Del Vecchio, Soren Kronkvist, Daniel Palmqvist and Robert Sall among others.

'It's been a privilege to work with all  these  good songwriters within the genre of classic  AOR,' tells Goran. 'The conformity of the production has a good red line with a straight forward melodic flow as you would expect. Its been a true pleasure performing it. The recording of the album took place in Daniel Flores' studio for the instrumental part while I did the vocals in my own studio. Personally I am grateful to be a part of this project and look forward to the fans listening to the album'.

The result is a true feast for the ears of all lovers of this music. Picture hints of the likes of Night Ranger, Journey, Bad English and Starship and you'll get a sense of what is in store for you! Hear for yourself with an album sampler:

Harry Hess returns with a sequel to 2010’s First Signal debut. The lead role of Mr. Hess is about all that is in common from the debut to this album.

Normally I’d jump in and complain that if you are using a project name, you should stick to the original personnel of that project, as swapping musicians/producers/writers generally leads to a completely different sounding album (Sunstorm and Allen/Lande for example).
But in this case, I’ll let it pass as the results speak for themselves.

Daniel Flores (Find Me, Murder Of My Sweet) and his new buddy Michael Palace are the duo behind all the music, whilst the songs are provided by an array of the current artists within the Frontiers stable.

Flores produces and delivers results that sonically improve on that of the debut – even if the style is a little different. The Dennis Ward moody AOR debut is trumped by this bubbly, more keyboard driven 80s sounding affair with at times a more aggressive edge, but overall an improved sound that isn’t far from the AOR of the two Find Me releases.
Harry is of course in fine voice over 11 tracks that hold a pretty consistent sound and quality. At times the keyboards are a little “too 80s”, but there is no doubt that this is a very fine release.

Highlights include the punchy She’s Getting Away; the sentimental ballads Still Pretending and Weigh Me In; the early Harem sounding One Step Over The Line and Love Gets Through; the angst of Broken and the moodiness of Kharma.

Hess, Harem and fans of the First Signal debut shouldn’t give owning this a second thought. Why haven’t you got it already? Essential for anyone who appreciate fine vocals and some catchy traditional melodic rock.
