Out on Frontiers Music Srl in March!

Frontiers Music Srl is pleased to announce the release of ROYAL HUNT new live album entitled “Cargo” on March 18, 2016.

Following the release of their latest studio album - “Devil's Dozen” – ROYAL HUNT participated in three widely known Festivals around the globe in the fall of 2015: ProgPower USA, Loud Park Japan and Rockingham UK. They performed their energetic brand of symphonic/progressive yet highly melodic and instantly accessible Royal Rock for thousands of appreciative fans.

While ROYAL HUNT´s next tour – sat to the spring of 2016 – is being announced (see dates below), the band found the time to gather in the studio and pick out the best performances recorded during their festival trek: an hour and a half of ROYAL HUNT´s trademark sonic assault, skillfully captured on tape.

Why live album and why now? "Well, mostly because we haven´t released any live recordings for – roughly – 10 years or so." says keyboard maestro and principal songwriter Andre Andersen, “2006” was great and many fans consider it to be our best (some will pick “1996” or “Closing the Chapter” as their favorite) but anyway – it´s been awhile, so we assumed that it might be interesting for you to check out our “new swing” at this live set. Just think about it: last time we recorded “Paradox” live was almost 20 years ago! Add a few new songs, the excitement of the festival performance, a couple of new faces to the line-up and – all of a sudden – things are sounding quite a bit different. We´d say it sounds fresh but let´s see what´s your opinion on this matter will be."

The album includes a complete rendition of their signature concept album “Paradox”. Royal Hunt released 13 studio albums and their name stands for quality Symphonic / Progressive Metal.

CD1 - The Mission, Half Past Loneliness, River Of Pain, Tearing Down The world, Message To G-D, Long Way Home

DEAN COOK ON LINE-UP CHANGES, RECORDING THE “HARD TIMES” ALBUM, AND WHAT THE BRIAR GUYS ARE DOING TODAY

Decibel Geek podcast/website staff writer The Lionsheart recently interviewed Dean Cook for a talk about the reissue of Hard Times by Briar, the bonus material and the last couple of years of Briar before disbanding in 1993. A few excerpts follow:

On recruiting a new vocalist/frontman in Kevin Billington:

“As I say we were deflated after the CBS/Sony deal and we were keen to get something else out there to try and help restore our reputation as a solid original band, Gimme All You Got was written as part of Reach Out so that was our next 7” self-financed single! We got that out there on our managers Shotgun Charlie label, it gained us a little interest but sadly didn’t get us an acceptable record deal, which is what we needed at the time, which is a pity! Basically, Kevin Griffiths was always more interested in playing bass than singing, so at this point he decided he  just wanted to enjoy himself on stage and just play bass...so we got a new singer in for a while! It was as simple as that really!

On recording the Cleveland House Demo in 1990 with the new six piece line up including keyboard player Jez Prosser:

“It was recorded in our rehearsal space in Cleveland House on Tyburn Road in Birmingham with our live sound guy Den York & manager George Bond, it was recorded completely live on our 8-track Tascam tape machine, as far as I can remember it was the only time we recorded live with Kevin Billington, it turned out well.“

On memories for the recording of the Hard Times album way back in 1992:

“We had set up that studio with our manager, it was so we could go in and record demo’s when we wanted to! In hindsight Briar always sounded best when we recorded live, we weren’t the type of band who were happy to record and re-record! We rehearsed a lot and we sounded great live and in my opinion that’s how we should’ve always recorded.“

On how Dean has kept himself busy and what the guys in Briar are doing today:

“Yeh, I have many projects and I’m always playing in lots of bands, it’s just my thing really! I’m only happy when I’m playing! Dave is currently in a couple bands, I also play with him. He is in Bogus Blooze and Ssex PistolsS (tribute). Dave’s my fave guitarist ever! He’s the most natural rock player I have ever played with and I have played with many players! Kevin Griffiths still plays, I’ve played in a number of projects with him over the years since Briar split up, he played bass in my solo project for a while called Ten and we also played together in a band called This Is. Kev also still plays occasionally with a few covers bands. Darren I still see occasionally but he doesn’t really do much of the band stuff nowadays, I think he was and is still more interested in the recording process as opposed to the live bad thing!“

Phil Collins Revisits Solo Career On 35th Anniversary Of Face Value Debut

Dallas, TX - January 27, 2016.  North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands catches up with drummer, singer/songwriter Phil Collins on the 35th anniversary of his solo debut Face Value , a five million seller in the US and a worldwide hit.

The club of rock singing drummers is particularly exclusive. But when you add in qualifiers 'songwriter' and 'bandleader', the universe reduces to three: Don Henley, Dave Grohl, and Phil Collins.

On the 35th anniversary of his Cinderella solo debut Face Value, Phil recalls the real-life betrayal and heartbreak which inspired 'In the Air Tonight', 'I Missed Again' and why he did not include another original, 'How Can You Sit There?', on Face Value nor it's follow-up, Hello I Must Be Going, but opted instead to give it to the soundtrack of the 1984 movie Against All Odds, going on to become Phil's first # 1 hit.

Phil shares with InTheStudio host Redbeard what really inspired him to write and record his first solo album.

'My marriage broke up... I said that I was leaving to go live in Vancouver. The guys (Genesis) said  'Hang on, don't leave, let's just put things on ice for a bit, we'll do our solo albums.' Now when they had finished their solo albums and I had come back from Vancouver with nothing having changed with regard to my personal situation, I had a lot more time and energy because it  (solo album) was something for me to do. My marriage hadn't repaired itself, so I was looking for things to channel my energies into.'  - Phil Collins

One On One With Mitch Lafon - FRANCIS BUCHHOLZ (Scorpions) & INGLORIOUS

Release Year:

Former SCORPIONS bassist FRANCIS BUCHHOLZ as well as INGLORIOUS lead singer NATHAN JAMES join Mitch for episode 189 of One On One With Mitch Lafon. In the shows first interview, long-time SCORPIONS bassist Francis Buchholz talks about his current Temple Of Rock band with Michael Schenker and Herman Rarebell, their current album Spirit On A Mission, getting back into music after his long post-Scorpions hiatus, working with Uli Jon Roth, the SCORPIONS 50th anniversary deluxe re-issues and not being invited to participate, the passing of Jimmy Bain, the Love At First Sting recording sessions, his favorite Scorpions album and much more

On taking a break from the music industry: "I had been touring for about twenty years with the Scorpions. I just needed some time off to look after my family, but the main reason was a disagreement within the band about management, about the future and about the past.. I didn't feel comfortable with the new people coming in."

The SCORPIONS 50th Anniversary re-issues and bonus interviews: "I knew about the interviews because Herman told me, but the record company just didn't want to invite me and I didn't want to run after them."

On Jimmy Bain's passing: "Very sad news... I was very sad about that. He's a lovely guy."

In the episode's second interview, Mitch sits down with upcoming singer Nathan James from INGLORIOUS. The two discuss the band's self-tiltled debut album, Nathan's career up to this point and being the singer on Uli Jon Roth's Scorpions Revisited album, and much more.

Quote from the interview: On getting into a band situation rather than move forward as a solo artist: "It's what I've wanted to do for a long time. I started recording a solo record with some amazing musicians. It was a great sounding album, but I was listening to it and I thought, 'I'd rather be Robert Plant than Meatloaf'."

Double Stop Podcast - DARREN HOUSHOLDER (Shrapnel Records)

Tuesday, December 16, 2014

Podcasts & Radio

In episode 88 of The Double Stop, Brian is joined by 90's Shrapnel Shredder Darren Housholder.

As a part of the later wave of Shrapnel shredders, Darren Housholder missed out on the exposure of some of his counterparts that came out in the 80's, but his 3 records for Shrapnel in the 90's set the bar high for shred. We cover his entire career including his album with Love/Hate, his brief time working with Jeff Pilson's War & Peace, W.A.S.P, Enuff Z'nuff and a near-miss with David Lee Roth. We also cover how he ended up with George Lynch's famous bomber jacket - and its return to Lynch.

https://soundcloud.com/thedoublestop/ep-88-darren-housholder-shrapnel-lovehate
http://thedoublestop.com/ep-88-darren-housholder-solo-lovehate/

On his brief stints with Enuff Z'nuff and W.A.S.P 35:00: "I got the call to join Enuff Z'nuff. I learned all their stuff - they were getting rid of Derek, their guitar player. Because he was a drug addict and all that stuff. And he's since died from that disease. I went to Chicago - I was in the band - I stayed up all night recording demos, and the next day they decided they were going to give him another shot. A couple of weeks later I got into W.A.S.P for his Crimson Idol cd. I learned his stuff note for note, went to rehearsals for about a week. After a week, I had asked him over lunch 'Hey Blackie, so we're doing these Monsters Of Rock shows, what do you think about a guitar solo?' He deadpans 'Guitar solo? Why don't you just open up the show?' He was pissed. He fired me the next day."

On almost getting the David Lee Roth gig in 1999 after John 5 left the band 52:30 "I sent over a tape, and he liked it, and I went over to Dave's house. Just me and him. ... And I wrote some more music and he liked it. And I went back to his house again. Then he walks me to my truck, and I've got a kid and I just started my business, and he sort of looks at me and asks 'how's the family doing?' And I say 'we're doing well, thanks Dave'. And that's the last I heard from him. Two things happened. 1 - he wants all his band to be bachelors. 2 - Bart Walsh had gotten through to him."

On the famous Bomber jacket that Housholder recently returned to George Lynch (photo attached) 1:11:22 "When he saw me wearing it in 1990 when playing (with Jeff Pilson's War & Peace) George goes 'Where'd you get the jacket?' And I go 'Michael (Bassist - War & Peace) gave it to me'. And he goes 'He GAVE it to you?'. And years and years go by, and I'm like - I've got to give this jacket back."
