OPERATION: MINDCRIME - Tate Talks To Billboard

Release Year:
2015

Former Queensryche Singer Geoff Tate Leads Operation: Mindcrime in New Video 'Burn': Exclusive PremiereThe Key feels a little bit different for Geoff Tate than anything he's done in his career up to this point.

The album is the singer's first under the banner Operation: Mindcrime, which was part of the 2014 settlement of his bitter lawsuit with his former band,Queensryche. And while Tate is certainly pleased to have the 12-track set ready to release on Sept. 18, the fact that he has two more coming as part of a trilogy is a bit surreal.
"I've got two other records I have to complete by October, so it's weird," Tate tells Billboard. "Typically when you finish a record you usually have this sense of accomplishment and elation and a period of time when you relax and breathe deep and get ready for the tour. That isn't the case with this one. It's, 'OK, it's done. Send the record to the record company, get their OK, then get back to work.' It's kind of a strange thing."
Watch the video for "Burn," which Billboard is exclusively premiering below.
Tate says the second album in the trilogy is currently being mixed, while the third is "mostly written" and on track to be finished by the October deadline. Their releases will be staggered with nine months to a year between them, but Tate wanted to record all three in the same time frame to make sure there was a flow and continuity to the story.
"It's actually taken me a lot longer to do than I thought it would, but you can't rush things," Tate says. "I've been working diligently since last November on this project. I've only taken 14 days off in the whole time from last November to now. It's just a ton of work. But I'm real happy with the outcome so far. it's been a real satisfying project -- very enjoyable, actually."
It would have been easier, of course, to just make a traditional album. But Tate -- who in the settlement also won sole rights to perform Queensryche's twoOperation: Mindcrime albums in their entireties -- has "been wanting to do a big conceptual project for awhile" and came up with the story, about an "international incident" that involves virtual currencies and global political intrigue, during a hiking vacation in Spain with his wife. Tate outlined and broke it up into three parts, which he's recording with Jason Slater at London Bridge Studio in Seattle and with a corps of musicians that included guitarist Scott Moughton from his own band as well as Disturbed's John Moyer, Megadeth/Metal Allegiance bassist David Ellefson, former Queensryche guitarist Kelly Gray and others -- though Tate says that Operation: Mindcrime will be remain a project rather than a band with a standing lineup.
But Tate will be taking Operation: Mindcrime on the road, with plans to begin during late November in Europe and bring the troupe back to North America during early 2016. "We're not going to play the second and third records live until they're released," Tate explains, "so we'll be touring The Key as the central point of the show and then sandwiching it between music from my past. I've got a lot of music that I've written over the years -- 147 songs -- and I'd like to explore that and play it live for people. We won't be wanting for things to put in the show, I can promise you that."

GLENN HUGHES, nicknamed the ‘Voice of Rock’, has today unveiled an official photo of his new band that he has put together for his European and UK 2015 Solo tour.  Glenn is pictured alongside drummer Pontus Engborg (far left) and ex-Whitesnake guitarist Doug Aldrich (far right). The photo is taken by Gene Kirkland.
The band’s UK leg of the European tour stars on October 17th at the Southampton Engine Rooms and ends at London’s Electric Ballroom on November 1st.   Special guest on the tour is Jared James Nichols who recently released his critically acclaimed debut album Old Glory & The Wild Revival.

The concerts will showcase highlights from Glenn's career including Trapeze, Deep Purple, Black Country Communion, California Breed, along with his solo material.
"I felt it was time for me to start touring with my solo band," says Glenn, who is currently on tour in Brazil.  "I called my drummer Pontus Engborg , and guitar player Soren Andersen.  Soren had made a contractual commitment to do an autumn Tour in Scandinavia, so I had to find a replacement. There was only one man on my mind... Doug Aldrich."

"I’ve known Doug from his time with Ronnie Dio, and of course Whitesnake. Doug played with me on a couple of Purple songs at a festival the night before Ronnie passed away. We had great chemistry, and talked about playing together again, when schedules permitted.
Continues Hughes, "Doug is a welcome addition to my Band, and is a dear friend, both loving and nurturing, and is a rock phenomenon.  I'm beyond grateful to return to a Solo Band touring cycle, that will see me travel across many continents these next 12 months. See you down the front. "

Glenn Hughes is a true original.  No other rock musician has carved such a distinctive style blending the finest elements of hard rock, soul and funk.  That astonishing voice is Hughes' calling card.  He's known as a singer's singer. Stevie Wonder once called Hughes his favorite white singer. "I love my fans, and interact with them online, or at venues on my travels," says Hughes. "There is no greater high than performing and to reach out to my fans."

Hughes, a native of Cannock, England, absorbed all kinds of influences, including early British hard rock, the Beatles and, most importantly, American soul and R&B. The sleek Motown sound from Detroit and the gritty Stax/Volt sound from Memphis left their mark on him.
The first important band Hughes was a member of that achieved notable success was Trapeze. The band's early '70s albums included MedusaTrapeze and You Are The Music... We're Just The Band.
In 1973, Hughes joined Deep Purple. The trailblazing hard-rock legends had just weathered the departure of vocalist Ian Gillan and bass guitarist Roger Glover, but guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, keyboardist Jon Lord and drummer Ian Paice continued with the addition of Hughes and David Coverdale.

Since 1992, Hughes has toured extensively in Europe, Japan and South America in support of solo albums, but more recently has been involved with award winning supergroups', Black Country Communion with guitar star Joe Bonamassa, keyboard player Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater) and drummer Jason Bonham, son of the late Led Zeppelin legend John Bonham and just last year, California Breed, who also featured both Hughes and drummer Jason Bonham along with newcomer guitarist Andrew Watt.
In between his hectic schedule, Hughes also found time to publish a book, "Glenn Hughes : The Autobiography - From Deep Purple To Black Country Communion", the Number 1 best seller is available in both hard and soft cover editions from all good retailers.
So make no mistake. The Voice of Rock never left the building.

SCREAM is the stunning debut album from British hard rock band LIFELINE
A true duet album with a classic British rock sounding that also combines songs that verge on melodic rock and hard rock  along with tunes firmly seated within the AOR genre.

SCREAM features 12 tracks packed with monstrous riffs and soaring melodies that seamlessly combine the vocal styles of Nigel and Lee without ever losing their individuality. The quality of the material combined with the first class musicianship makes this a debut album every self-respecting fan should check this out! After an introduction by Khalil Turk (Escape Music), Nigel Bailey (Three Lions, Bailey) and Lee Small (Shy, Phenomena) were determined to make an album together and share vocal duties. Paul Hume (Demon, Lawless) was approached as producer and as guitarist for the band. The guys needed a rock solid drummer and called upon Steve Clarkson, who Nigel had worked with for many years, as the man behind the drum kit. Last but not least, Andy Bailey (Three Lions, Bailey) was recruited to add keyboards.

Nigel set about writing songs for the album in late 2014 and the writing process was completed in early 2015. 'I write the type of songs that I like to listen to, be that on the heavier side or a ballad, I never set out with a particular agenda, I just picked up my guitar and waited to see what came out, although the intention was to write material that would complement both Lee's and my own vocal style.' says Nigel.

The guys gathered at Summerbank Studios in Stoke-On-Trent to commence recording and immediately realised that they were creating something special. From the groove laden, infectious rhythms of the leadoff single 'Jezebel' to the softer AOR feel of 'Feels like Love' and on to the raw driving power of title track 'Scream', this album is a must for all melodic hard rock fans!!

In episode 141 of One On One With Mitch Lafon, guitarist and producer, Bob Kulick, sits down with Mitch to discuss his new book, upcoming EP, working as a ghost musician on KISS' Alive II & Killers albums, the making of the Paul Stanley 1978 solo album, touring with Alice Cooper, the 1989 Paul Stanley solo tour, Balance, Meat Loaf, Motorhead, his brother Bruce Kulick and much much more.

Drummer Allan Schwartzberg co-hosts this episode. Allan is best known to KISS fans for having 'ghost' drummed on KISS' The Elder, Animalize and Asylum albums as well as credited performances on the Gene Simmons and Peter Criss solo albums of 1978. He's also appeared, both credited and uncredited, on multiple Alice Cooper albums.

Quote from the interview:

KISS ALIVE II: "Paul called me and said Ace was dragging."

Feedback from the band on guitar playing during the recording of Alive II: "It doesn't sound like Ace enough. Try to keep it in the ball park."

"I had my own band, Balance. I played with Alice Cooper, Lou Reed, Meatloaf, and all these people. I'm just on this train going through all of these artists."

I'd agreed to play on Gene and Paul's [1978 solo albums], but it became an issue. To have the same lead player on two of the records just defeated the purpose of everybody doing a different thing."

Bruce Kulick on joining KISS: "This was his fate."
