Melodic Briefs

In response to Joe Lynn Turner's recent statement of disapproval of the "20 years Of Brazen Abbot" anniversary release, I would like to say the following:

I was very surprised and saddened to learn from Joe's manager/wife, that they came out to medias with a hostilestatement, which is harmful to me. This was completely uncalled for - they did not get in touch with me (as friends would do) prior to going out to medias.

Five and a half years ago the Brazen Abbot show "Live At The Amphitheatre" was filmed to be released on DVD. The whole band knew about it and upon getting paid at the end of the tour, they signed waivers, allowing me to use the video material. Joeand his manager had obviously forgotten about him signing a declaration of waiving rights, so I sent them a copy of the document. The response was - "..I am not sure I am OK with the wording in it....it is not written by a lawyer". Yes, I usually don't communicate with my band through lawyers, and not expecting any problems from the band membersback then came up with the text myself. It was clear, that everyone is OKwith this material being released and there will be no futureclaims of any kind.

Brazen Abbot is my band, and Mr. Turner was the singer in it. No one else from the band has problems with that DVD, in fact they all have been looking forward to it being released.
Of course I felt no obligation to officially notify anyone about this release, as this is my band, I have personally paid for all the Masters and own them. Mr. Turner is not a partner in Brazen Abbot - he was a singer in the band and got paid in full, upon signing the waiver. No questions asked, no observations made, all in the presence of his future manager.

I have always had a great respect for Joe, so I responded in a friendly manner, explaining, that this package is released only to mark and honor the 20th anniversary of Brazen Abbot - not for making money. In fact, there is no International record company behind it and it is available exclusively through the Brazen Abbot website, with no commercial advertising of any sort. It will sell most likely 2-300 copies and will definitely leave me with a considerable financial loss plus a bunch of unsold boxes in the cellarAfter finding out that Joe is unhappy and having pointed many times , that I want us to remain friendsin a gesture of a good will I offered him a cut of my share. Considering the minimal gain from sales, his share would have been peanuts, so his manager chose not to discuss that further.

Throughout the years I have proven my friendship towards Joe many times, I have also brought quite a lot of business to himIn return I have received no business or any income from Joe,except for one gig in my home country, where I was just the comfortable choiceIn fact, many of you may know, that recently played on almost half of the Rated X debut CD. Joe called me, being frustrated due to the unfortunate illness of the bands guitarist and asked me to help him out of the troublesome situation he was in. He offered to pay for my work himself. I played, engineered and recorded the guitar tracks, the CD was released, but I did not get paidSome changes were made to my guitar tracks without me even being asked. Never mind, I thought - maybe this will lead to something good anyway, so I said nothing. However, upon reminding his manager about these events now, her reply was:"Joe asked if you are willing to do it... In my understanding, this was the only time in many years your name finally was mentioned in all the international musical media... And Joe was happy to help you with that, just as you were happy to help us..."  One more thing - I never even received a copy of that CD. In my opinion this says a lot about where Joe and I stand.

Finally I kindly asked Joe to send a disclaimer about his statement, but he did not do it, which led to my statement here.

Love, peace and respect to all:

Hi folks,
We don't do thanksgiving here in Oz, but to all my American friends, very best wishes to you all!
There's a lot going on, so I figured I'd sum it all up here...

My office is gradually filling up with packages and I'm doing my best to get through all recent orders: MRCD13, the USB, sale clearance and MRR new releases.

I'm over half way loading the USB drives with the MRF4 content.
Unfortunately more than half the MRCDs arrived damaged, so replacements had to be ordered and are on their way now.

I'm doing my best to balance the site needs with shipping orders and hope to finish ALL orders over the weekend for shipping out Monday.

New MRR titles were pushed back to Jan/Feb so I can get caught up with everything.
Sorry for the delays, but thank you to all that have pre-ordered the various things through the course of 2015. Support via ore-orders is hugely important.

The business has changed drastically as we all know, for me it seems that most of my business is now coming from MRR and CD/merch sales, so I will be concentrating on those aspects in 2016. I'm working on some very special apparel ideas too :)

I will also wipe the slate clean and start fresh in 2016 with CD reviews - ensuring that all new and upcoming releases are reviewed and done so on time. They will be a major focus on the site.

2016 will also see MR reach a huge milestone - 20 YEARS online!

WTF, eh? Yes...hard to believe I'm still here and you folks are still reading.
I'll say more later, but thank you!

Get ready for an extended series over the months ahead:

20 from 20: all manner of things made into lists of the 20 best from the last 20 years!

Lastly - don't forget Rocknskull vs MelodicRockFest in Chicago next October and next week I will announce the lineup for the first ever MelodicRockFest Australia in May.

Cheers and thank you once again for all the fabulous support.

R.I.P SHERWOOD BALL.
This from Jay Graydon:
With heavy hearts we are posting this:

I am saddened to note Sherwood Ball has passed away.

Many times over the years I had told Sherwood he is on a very short list of the best singers of all time! If Stevie Wonder had heard Sherwood sing, Stevie would agree!

Sherwood could sing in any style and only a handful of white singers can sing R&B and make it funky and totally believable! Sherwood was also a very good guitarist!

Sherwood was like a brother to me! A very generous person with a heart of gold!
In 1994 and 1996 I put together a band to tour Japan, Sweden, and Norway. Sherwood was surely a key factor as to the band as a guitarist and singer! So many fond memories of our time together.

As to celebrate Sherwood's talent, a few years ago I decided to do a musical experiment as to the song, Day In, Day Out for a project we called Crank Sinatra. Sherwood sang the song and nailed the vocal as always!

I'm not in the mood to note all of the details as to why and how the process went. This track has been available through my website and CD Baby, This is not the time for a business pitch so here is the mix for free. Pass along to anyone you like that would want to hear Sherwood singing in the Sinatra Style with his own "feel". Sherwood Ball singing Day In - Day Out

Rest in peace Sherwood.

Jay.

Frontiers Music Srl announces that the German band formerly known as Supremacy has decided to change its name to PHANTOM 5 in order to avoid any confusion with other bands using the former moniker.

Producer and guitarist Michael Voss says: "There is so much traffic around when it comes to the names for another band. We first had the Supremacy name and really rigged it, but fans worldwide contacted us that there were other bands who already used the brand. So we developed a new one and finally got lucky to find: Phantom 5!"

PHANTOM 5 is the new band formed by some german Hard Rock luminaries, including former Bonfire singer Claus Lessmann, former Frontline guitarist Robby Boebel, former Scorpions bassist Francis Buchholz and former Jaded Heart drummer Axel Kruse - along with Michael Voss (Casanova).

Voss is currently putting the finishing touches to the mixes and says: For me it sounds like we did a follow up to the famous Bonfire Fireworks album with a touch of Frontline meets Jaded Heart groove it is a driving monster with huge walls of guitars, powerful soaking drums and fine catchy melodieswe took a trip back into the world of the eighties!!!

The label plans to release the record in the first half of 2016.

G'day all,
I have just emailed all those that have pre-ordered MRCD13 or USB2 and advised them of delays on both titles.

Both will now be ready to ship the week of November 16. No more delays! There were issues with both that have now been sorted.

It has been a period of cockups here at MR central. I simply have not been able to manage everything I've put on myself to do and will soon give detailed thought as to how better run things in 2016 so I can provide the best news and reviews coverage, while also running a record label and hopefully soon...an apparel side project :)

Stay tuned for updates on that's to come for the site (tweaks planned) and MRR (plenty of new releases next year) and details of MelodicRock Fest Australia (hopefully in April) and "Rocknskull vs MRF", Chicago, October 2016.

Thanks for reading...cheers from the ass end of the world.

PS. A heavily abbreviated 2014 MelRock Awards List coming up....

A MESSAGE FROM SERAFINO PERUGINO, PRESIDENT OF FRONTIERS MUSIC SRL

I have seen that some people are commenting with their disappointment that a few of the 'so called' supergroups are not playing live and that this somehow diminishes the relevance or quality of these releases. A lot of negative vibes and preconceived notions are made before a note of music has even been released. This is not a new issue to us and we of course respect people's opinions, but in these times of social media where direct communication to the fans is available, I thought I'd make a direct statement to explain how we, Frontiers see things.

Since the moment I put the label together, I saw this as one of the most exciting jobs that I could ever have imagined in my life. It was something that for years I was only able to dream of. The idea of working with the artists that for years and years I had been listening to on record was truly exciting. And after almost 20 years (yes, next year Frontiers will turn 20!), I think I have not lost one ounce of that initial enthusiasm! I was, and still am primarily a MUSIC fan and I have always interpreted my role as A&R director of Frontiers in a creative way. I have always been relentless in trying to find and expose GOOD MUSIC to the fans. And considering that when I started the label a lot of the classic bands that I grew up with were disbanded or not active, I think that I have really helped in creating some interesting pieces of music to fill the void left by those legends.

Since the days where ' together with artists like Kevin Chalfant, Mark Mangold, Jim Peterik, Billy Greer or Tony Harnell to name a few ' we created the concepts of Two Fires, The Sign, Seventh Key, Pride of Lions and Starbreaker, Frontiers has been the 'brain' behind these new band projects which were greeted warmly by the public and the media. Now as to WHY those bands have never played live? Well to begin with it is not completely true that none of these projects have ever played live. In fact, The Sign, Two Fires, Seventh Key, The Magnificent, W.E.T, Angelica, ISSA, and I am certainly forgetting others, have all played live shows. And also, it needs to be said that there is nothing in principle that prevents these bands from playing live. In most cases, unfortunately this has to do with a lack of interest from tour promoters and/or with scheduling conflicts among the members or even certain contractual obligations that the artists might have to their main band. However, I am pleased to say that there will be more and more efforts from our side to bring these projects to life on the stage moving forward ' and you will soon see what I mean.

So, yes, I think I am creative and again, what still preoccupies me the most, after all these years, is to keep releasing GREAT records that keep Classic Rock, Melodic Rock, and Hard Rock alive and well with a constant flow of quality releases. This ' I think ' allows everyone to keep ENJOYING new and exciting music while allowing me to keep building on my personal dreams thanks to the art, talent and skill of all these amazing musicians we are so fortunate to work with. Just think about all the amazing records from the likes of ALLEN LANDE, FROM THE INSIDE, ISSA, KHYMERA, KISKE SOMERVILLE, PLACE VENDOME, FIRST SIGNAL, SUNSTORM, VERTIGO and all the others'

I really hope that people can welcome with open arms the music we release and give it a fair chance, regardless of who is involved, if the artist is touring, etc. Moreover I wish to say one final thing: If it wasn't for some of those projects, we would have had a lot more difficulties in launching new talents. The most shining example is probably W.E.T, whose success immensely helped the exposure for two of the most EXCITING new bands we have on the roster, Eclipse (Sweden) and Work of Art. But, I could obviously mention Revolution Saints for Alessandro Del Vecchio, Allen Lande for Magnus Karlsson, Starbreaker for Fabrizio Grossi, Find Me for Daniel Flores, and of course all the work we did during the years with Dennis Ward, and so on. These groups are also a really important tool to expose new songwriters, producers and real musical talents to the world.

Talking about new bands, you may have noticed some 'young blood' coming in. I am very proud of these new guys, and I hope you will follow and give them a chance, exactly in the same way you would do with a new Whitesnake or Journey record.

Long Live Rock n' Roll!!

Serafino
