Glen Burtnik (2007)

Glen Burtnik: Syncronicity for the former Styx man.     Glen… How are you going? Good, very, very good. Tell me I've got the time right. You've got the time perfect. Fantastic, you never quite know from the other end of the earth. How are things? Oh, they're dramatic. There's good and there's bad. There's lots of drama in my life. Really? That doesn't sound too good. It could be worse. You know what? I woke up this morning and I'm walking around and I'm healthy, there's more good than bad. It's all in how you want to look at it. I'm alright. I'm fine and it's good to talk to you. I'm trying to think when we did speak last, but it was a long time ago. We did an interview about the time of the Palookaville, I think it was. Ok, that sounds right. It's good to talk to you again. We obviously email all the time. Yeah, absolutely. You're still going strong and there's this concert you've got coming up. Strong enough. This business is on life support I guess in some ways isn't it? Business is kind of tough. Oh absolutely. The whole music business ...

Glenn Hughes (2005)

Glenn Hughes: The Soul Mover Speaks. Glenn Hughes talks at length about his soullyfully rocking new solo album, Iommi Hughes, that live DVD and a bunch of other great stuff! This is a MP3 Interview in 5 Parts! I hope you enjoy the concept - it allows the lengthy interview to be placed online quicker than waiting for a transcript to be typed out. Highlights of the interview include: "The last 10 years ... it's been a nice little ride, now let's get serious. What's missing for me is that I wanted to start focusing on what makes me tick. I want to make records now for the way I will be remembered in 10 years time. I made a lot of records, what I did with From Now On…Feel…all different…that was a guy figuring out what I really want to do. It's all me (style changes) – it takes me quite a while to feel comfortable in my own skin. I'm really happy with the focus of what's going on right now….I'm allowing myself to have fun with my music now. Labels that want me to be one dimensional – no – I'm going to do what I want to do. I ...

Gotthard (2004)

Gotthard: A new team in 2004. Gotthard Interview with Steve Lee by Sven Horlemann - from the Bang Your Head Festival 2004 At the Bang-Your-Head Festival in Germany (read the review here) I had the chance to talk to Steve Lee from Gotthard right before their concert. We did the interview in German, so what you are about to read is my translation. Thanks go out to Frank Süpfle to make it happen. MelodicRock – Hello Steve, I would like to know the actual status with in the band. Last news is you have a new band member. Also 'Human Zoo' marks a new era for the band because it was the first time Gotthard worked without Chris von Rohr (mentor of the band since the beginning). Steve – Well I have to say that the 'Human Zoo' tour was the best tour we ever did. After 14 years of Gotthard rocking the world me and the band are very proud on what we achieved. You know that being in such a kind of business you have your highs and lows, but until now each year we were fortunate enough to get the band another step further. We also stick to our original music ...

Gregg Fulkerson (2003)

Gregg Fulkerson: A new name, a new band, same classy attitude.   Gregg Fulkerson talks to me about Attraction 65, his passion for music, life after Blue Tears and the long road inbetween. I think you will agree that Gregg's one of the nice guys of rock n roll. Read on...       So Gregg, most folks will know you (and Mike) from Blue Tears. Starting at that point, how did you enjoy the ride that was Blue Tears? We enjoyed it immensely, that was a long ride as well. Starting when I was in high school and to tell you the truth, we've just gotten back on with ATTRACTION 65 for all practical purposes, we are literally picking up where we left off even down to using the last song I wrote during that era, "Strong", on the new album but I'll get to all that somewhere in this interview I'm sure. Let's go straight to the new record - the debut Attraction 65 album. When did you start work on this album? About a year ago as far as the recording as far as the writing of the new songs which is the majority of the record it was written ...

Gary Hughes (2003)

Gary Hughes: 3 years of work comes to fruition.   Gary Hughes talks in detail about the origins behind Once And Future King, and the research and planning needed to bring such a big project to completion. Hi Gary, Congratulations on the new album/project. When did you decide that you just had to write an epic tale based around the legend of King Arthur? It's something that I've always wanted to do and it's something that I began years and years ago. With regard to the subject matter it's something that I was into as a child. It was very much a part of British history in school. What I liked about it is that so much of it is grey area. As a Legend, so much is down to interpretation and I liked the idea of something that I could add a little bit of myself into. The flexibility of interpretation. Obviously there are certain historical facts and timescales that you have to deal with but there is so much grey area that leaves scope for your own version. I researched it for at least three to four years. I was reading nothing else in my spare time. I ...

Glenn Hughes (2003)

Glenn Hughes: The voice of rock is finally comfortable with his with his role in the rock music world and is delivering some of the best work of his career. Hi Glenn, now's okay to talk for a few minutes? Oh, yeah. I just got home in time. Fantastic mate, thank you for that. How is HTP II coming then? Well, I'm really excited by it because I wanted to make another record that was similar to the first one. It's probably more melodic than the first one and I wanted to keep it in the box of what the first one was, but this one has probably more music in it. Right. When I say more music, it's got more harmonic thread. Obviously you'll have to hear it, you'll hear it soon. It's a good follow up, Andrew. It's a strong follow-up. I love the first one. Yeah, the first one is the blueprint and I didn't want to go too far out of the box on this one, so it's got moments from the first one and it's got the big musical harmonies and its got the classic sound. We're really, really happy with it. You've got your ...

Glenn Hughes (2002)

GLENN HUGHES - OCTOBER 2001 Building The Vocal Machine xx   Hey Glenn….so how are things with you anyway? So everything's good man, the reviews this week are strong so I'm just, I don't know, startled. All I can tell you know is, I just made another record and people are digging it. Yeah, absolutely, Absolutely. And I'm one of them. Oh yeah? You know, Andrew I've got to tell you, I guess being married and having no… I didn't want to listen to anybody's advice on what my album shouldn't be like. I get a lot of people, trust me, telling me what to do. Like for instance, you can't, you know, be funky. Or you can't have echo and you can't have background vocals. And you shouldn't have any chicks. And you can't have any horns. And whatever you do, don't have… I get people all the time suggesting. And I just locked myself in my studio and I wrote songs. Off the record I said, I wonder what Trapeze would sound like doing this or let's put an acoustic track here. Let's put some real Hammond on there. Let's, let's put some more vocal on the record, ...

Queensryche - Geoff Tate (2001)

Queensryche Interview - Interview conducted Thursday 20th October 2001. Geoff Tate, who is the lead vocalist for Seattle's own Queensryche, took the time to talk to Justin Donnelly about the bands new double live album 'Live Evolution'. Why a live album at this stage in your career? It wasn't planned at all, and was a kind of a spontaneous in our decision to make it. Our new record company Sanctuary inspired it. We went out to dinner after they came to see us play, when someone suggested we should do a live record. The next day, following a lovely dinner and several bottles wine, we had an agreement to do a live record. (Laughs) How was the track selection organised? Did you decide to slip in some tracks that hadn't been played for a while? Their (Sanctuary) idea, what they would ultimately like to see, was a well-rounded record. And the more we (The band) talked about it, we came up with more and more songs we wanted to include on it. It just turned into a big monster. Then we thought, 'Wow! We've got so many songs, why do we just represent our entire career by taking a couple of ...

Giant - David Huff (2001)

David Huff: I tried to get in touch with you, I guess I had the wrong number or something. MelodicRock.com: Yeah, Mario kept saying, “I'll get him to call you”. For some reason something in me tweaked that like, well what number is he going to call? I know it. But I thought, oh he must have it under control because I've got my phone number on the website, but he had my old number, so… That's what it was. Actually it was a fax number or something, so I faxed something. Oh it's a fax number now is it? Yeah. Oh dear. It's not mine. <laughs> Isn't it funny, man. Yeah, so I sent them a fax and then I called Mario and said, "Man I don't think it's the right number." And he said, "I think I got the wrong number, my mistake." Not a problem. Great to finally catch up with you anyway. Yeah man. So what part of Australia are you in? I'm in Hobart, which is the capital of Tasmania. Oh my gosh. I've been to Australia one time and loved it. I went through Sydney, Perth, I can't remember all ...

Giant - Dann Huff (1999)

After many attempts at getting Dann on the phone, I was finally able to last week for a brief chat in between recording sessions in a Nashville studio. What you read may not be exactly what you wanted to hear, but at least the door is open to the chance of a new Giant record...maybe!   Hey Dann. Have you got a few minutes to talk? I sure do. I appreciate your time, thank you. Well it's great to get you on the phone. Yeah, sorry it's taken so long. No problem, it's just great to be able to talk to you. So how's life? Fine. You know, working ahead every day. Doing what seems like the same thing…but somehow you seem to make some headway and over a period of time you look back and see what you've done and it's more than you think when you are doing it. Well you've got quite an impressive body of work if I might say so, both as a producer and as a session guy now. Yeah well the session stuff has definitely been the predominant. Are you enjoying the producing side of it? Yeah it's kinda always ...

Glenn Hughes (1998(

Glenn hughes is one of those legendary vocalists that others measure themselves by. I have been a fan since several years ago, I was introduced to him by my bud Peter, who joins me in this fairly open conversation with the man himself. I had zero questions written out, instead opting for an open chat which hopefully you will find equally as open and honest. Glenn Hughes it seems...is on a mission! Now what's going on man? Well have you got some time to chat? Yeah Great that'd be awesome. My best buddy here, like I said is a 20 year fan, he's just popped out and hopefully he'll be here before I get off the phone because if he doesn't get a chance to talk to you he's gonna absolutely bloody kill me! So how's things? Man they're never better for me. Things right now in my life are possibly…well I guess you've heard people say this before 'oh man things are going great', but you know it's like when everything is good, it's not just like the music's good, or your relationship with this person is good, for me right now it's a most spiritual time for ...

Glen Burtnik (1996)

If there is one thing we all know about Glen Burtnik is that he is a great songwriter. He has crafted some of the finest undiscovered pop/aor tunes that have ever been, and still today remains one of the biggest cult AOR stars. This interview was taken a few months back, when I talked to Glen at home, inbetween making arrangements for the release of his latest CD Palookaville. It has turned out to be a great year for Burtnik fans, (note: no longer a ‘c’ in Burtnik!) with the new studio album, and also from MTM in Sweden, an archives compilation of his unreleased tunes, some of which he discusses in the interview. You can read reviews for Palookaville and Retrospectacle after you have read Glen's teachings! So Glen , Where have you been hiding? Well what happened to me, was I put out two records, and there was a change of A&R staff at A&M Records and I kinda got caught in one of those things, so you know, I had a short little moment there at A&M and then it was over. But then I started getting into songwriting after a ...

Gary Hughes (2004)

Gary Hughes: Return To Intensity. Gary Hughes talks about the new album and the chosen path of an indie artist, plus his now open to the public studio. G'Day Gary, thanks for taking the time out to chat today. The new Ten album Return To Evermore is out now, having just been released. How would you compare this Ten album to any other in your career? This album was probably the most pleasurable of my career. There's a real sense of desire and purpose in the Ten camp again and it has been a pleasure to work on the album with a air of freshness and hunger in the ranks again. The general moral in the band is better than at anytime I can remember. I said in my review that you are always busy and it didn't occur to me that it had been 2 years since the last Ten album! We all know how you have spent this time - has it been satisfying for yourself? Yes, very much so. I was very pleased with the outcome of the Arthurian albums. They were a mammoth task and all in all I feel that they are very complete in the ...

Glen Burtnik (2004)

Glen Burtnik: Something old and something new. Glen talks in detail about his diverse, but rocking new CD Welcome To Hollywood, out now. And then there's his time with Styx!       G'Day Glen. Great as always to talk with you - you have had a busy time of it lately. Not sure where to begin, so maybe I'll start with the album and work backwards! First of all, Welcome To Hollywood is now released. Judging by your Newsletter comments, it must come as a great relief to see if completed and actually available? I am very glad this record is finished and finally finding it's way to an audience. As Bon Scott once sang, “I've done everything I'm gonna do. The rest is up to you” It seems there were times where you felt that wouldn't happen? Well, it sure took a very long time… Like Eric Clapton said, “Time can bring you down, time can bend your knees.” Was the recording process for this album much harder/different to that of previous albums - and if so - why was that the case? I've never recorded an album while on tour before. At the same time I ...

Genius: Episode 2 (2004)

Genius: Daniele Liverani's Episode 2. Italian composer/guitarist Daniele Liverani is back with his second episode of the Genius trilogy - but there's also an instrumental solo album which was itself part of the Genius story back in it's conception. Daniele talks about both projects with enthusiastic details! Hi Daniele, quite a year for you - two albums released this month and already Empty Tremor on the market! You have been busy! Yeah! You're right....sometimes I can't believe how I can manage everything...he he, but I love music and I love living into music so I don't feel any pressure of stress...I' very honored and happy to be able to release so much music for the listeners. It's always been my dream since ever. Genius 2 is the frontline release - let's talk about that. The album is part 2 of a 3 disc epic - before the vocals were added, what stage was the recording of the music up to? Completed fully or in need of some work or otherwise? This second episode has been completed right after the production of the 3rd empty tremor album "The Alien Inside", but the basic music tracks of the whole 3 episodes had already ...

Green (2003)

Green: A new face for Italian prog-rock. Green talk about their unusual debut album and where the band gets it's heart from. First of all - when were Green formed? Green were born in the summer of '98 as a cover band. It was mainly a way of having a chance to play live (instead of being looked in a studio). At the time the name of the band was ppg but the band members are still the same. None of us had any project of composing or bothering with anything like that, we were a cover-band. I wanted to make my guitar scream a bit since it had been "suffocated" by endless studio sessions. I knew Michele from a previous "bad toys" (one of my first metal projects of the eighties) reunion a few years before (we hired him for the occasion). I asked him if he fancied playing a few songs and then asked Guido to join us. Michele then introduced his brother Giovanni, our keyboard player and seventies rock became the basic ingredient of our cover band. I started playing Jimmy Page again, rediscovering the thrill of playing in a band (which I hadn't done for 10 years ...

Ten - Gary Hughes (2001)

G A R Y H U G H E S Talking Ten, Bob Catley, Solo, Hugo, King Arthur and more...     xxxx   G'Day Gary, I hope you have a few minutes spare to type out some answers to the following questions. Thanks in advance for taking part! First, let's go to the new Ten album Far Beyond The World. This is obviously another collection of songs to add to the Ten legacy and you have written a lot of material over the years. What did you have in mind when writing for this album? We just felt it was time to return to our melodic roots for a while. The new album is basically an album of love songs. I suppose that would be the thread if any. I have gone for the commercial elements this time and I am very pleased with the material on the new album. You write for yourself, Ten and other artists - do you set aside a time frame to write for each one, or write constantly, assigning songs as you see them fitting those other artists or yourself? I write constantly. But when a particular project is imminent I put a ...

Kharma - Goran Edman (2000)

Goran Edman The Interview (Kharma, Reingold, Street Talk, Yngwie Malmsteen, Brazen Abbot, Glory & John Norum) Goran, you have a fantastic resume these days, covering some very memorable projects over 16 years now. But on your latest release Kharma I think you put in your best vocal performance ever. I totally agree. It is difficult to explain , from the beginning it was just meant to be another project requested by Magnus Soderqvist on MTM. I felt very skeptic about doing songs out of a 10-year-old demo but when I heard the new material I started to feel the potential of the band. Atilla is an outstanding songwriter and from the hard work and all confrontations a friendship developed that also contributed to the final result of the production. The chemistry in the band is easily underestimated I think. It was also a privilege to be able to work in a high tech top class studio such as Dragan's Bohus Sound Recordings. The pre production of the vocal arrangements became the final master and the result felt very spontaneous when we did not have to deal with the magic demo syndrome. Kharma's musical orientation was very similar to my own preferences I ...

Gary Hughes (1998)

Gary Hughes has established himself as one of England's premiere singer songwriters. In a few short years he has managed to be involved in some mighty AOR releases including Hugo's solo debut, the monsterous upcoming Bob Catley debut and not to mention 4 albums with his band Ten and now a second solo album. So here's Gary on upcoming events, past records and a sometimes fickle press.... Gary, great to finally talk with you! I am not going ask what's happening, because you have to be one of the busiest guys in the business! Yeah, I guess that's true, but to be honest I like to be busy. I enjoy my work and now I have a schedule where I work like a normal job wherever possible. That is, Monday to Friday and try to be home for the evenings with my family. When we recorded "The Robe" it got crazy towards the end and I almost made myself very ill. I find that I can be fresh to the projects if I don't overdo the amount of work each day and I get to switch off in the evenings and at weekends. OK, so how do you relax and when ...

DAVID HUFF - THE 2010 GIANT INTERVIEW

Giant: New Promises Giant drummer David Huff celebrates the band's return - albeit in a new form. Time to get mometum up and continue that on he says. Let's hope so! Hi David - so, you're ok to talk now? Yeah! I'm good! Great! Ok, so, you've obviously been doing interviews pretty flat-out. What's it like to get back into the whole interview process and album prelaunch phase? It brings back a lot of good memories. It really does. It's been good. We're talking about something that's not a grind. We're talking about something that we're proud of, enjoyable stuff to do. It's been good. Ok, so you're normally working behind the scenes of the music you're making, right? Yeah, exactly-totally. I work with a lot of artists: that's THEIR job. (laughs) So, the last few years, who have you been primarily been working with? A lot of people. I've lived in LA and, now, I've moved back to Tennessee about 7 months ago…I work on film and TV movies; I work with some pop artists-some stuff that is totally ...
