Dennis DeYoung (2007)

Dennis DeYoung: Four Decades Of Influence. The elder statesman of rock n roll is Dennis DeYoung. This man has seen everything and when he speaks - many listen. Dennis is always a joy to speak to and once again shares his wisdom in an interview that covers his new solo album, the record industry as it stands today and as always, a little reflection on Styx. Over to Dennis... Good morning, or good afternoon to you. It's good night, but it's close enough. How are you Dennis? I'm good, and yourself? I'm doing pretty well thank you. It's good to be talking to you again. Now is it winter down there? I'm sorry to say it is. How cold is it? It's not too bad, it'll get up to about the mid-fifties today. Well that's spring here. (laughter) That's our winter so that's pretty cold for us but not for you. Not for us, no, we could lose another fifty degrees and that would be cold. But what're you gonna do? We're stupid, we don't know any better. (laughter) Move to Florida. Oh, I'll stay where I am. I like Chicago. All my friends and family are here, so ...

David Readman (2006)

Interview with David Readman, singer of PINK CREAM 69, III, David Readman Band By Sven Horlemann for Melodicrock.com. Interview was conducted April 2006. Most of us know David Readman as the lead singer of PINK CREAM 69, some of his involvement with ADAGIO, a few might even know the “III” (THREE) record were he shares vocal duties with Paul Laine (ex-DANGER DANGER). Whatever you think of him following Andy Deris (who moved on to HELLOWEEN) within the Pinkies, it takes a lot of balls for a 21 year old UK kid to join a melodic rock band. In a foreign country! At a time were grunge ruled the world!! PINK CREAM had opened themselves with their third record "Games People Play" to a new direction, expanding melodic rock and integrating modern rock sounds. Of course "Change", the debut PINK CREAM 69 CD for David could be considered a big step into the melodic rock meets grunge direction. You might even consider this a mistake, taking 2 steps at a time and frustrating the fans of the classic PINK CREAM 69 sound and failing to find enough new fans. In my opinion there are some great records out there (DOKKEN, WARRANT to name just two) who tried ...

Diving For Pearls

Danny Malone It took a while to get this transcribed, but here is my chat late last year with Diving For Pearls frontman Danny Malone discussing the controversial Texas album. Thanks to Don Higgins for transcribing the interview for me!     Ok Danny. Great to finally hook up with you. You have a partnership of sorts with producer David Prater. How did you guys get hooked up for the debut album? Michael Kaplan was our A & R guy; Don Grisham was the guy that signed this band. And Don Grisham was also the guy that … I wouldn't use the word insisted but he is really, really the guy that suggested very, very strongly that we use David Prater to produce the record. Right, OK. Because originally we had somebody else lined up. Or I shouldn't say that we had them lined up, we had met with a guy named Terry Thompson I believe. Oh, Terry Thomas? Thomas rather who had done Bad Company, right? And went on to do Giant. Terry Thomas was the guy, the first guy that we were interested in. Terry Thomas came to New York, took a meeting with us and came to a ...

Dokken (2004)

Dokken: Hell To Pay in 2004!   Dokken guitarist Jon Levin talks in detail about the new Dokken album Hell To Pay and about life in the band in general. Jon talked to Ron & Don Higgins, good friends of mine, who put their hands up for the interview and conducted it with enthusiasm. Thanks guys...       Ron: How are you doing, Jon? Jon: I'm doing great. Don: There's two of us on the line. I'm not sure if they told you that when they set this up but, I'm Don and then there's my brother, Ron. We're twins. Jon: Hey, guys. What's going on? Ron: Not much. Don: We'll be doing this together. In fact, we met you on Friday night; you may or may not remember. Jon: Oh, okay. Don: At the show in Cincinnati. Jon: Awesome. Don: And by the way, that was a really good show. I was really impressed with the way the whole band sounded and, in particular, with the way that you really seemed to match all of George Lynch's notes. You did an outstanding job. Jon: Thank you very much. Don: It was really good. I liked the new song that ...

Danny Danzi (2004)

Danny Danzi: Welcomes You To Danziland. Danny Danzi has proven to be one of the more popular personalities on the melodic rock scene and in this interview provides some interesting and honest insights into the making of his new solo album DaniLand and surviving the last 4 years. Mr Danzi! Here we go with that interview that's long overdue! Mr. McNeice! You know, we've never done an interview, have we? Long overdue for sure....then again, what the hell could you have possibly asked me anyway? "Danny, will it come out this year?" Hahahahaha! Congratulations on the new album mate - long overdue (which we will get to) - but well worth the wait! Ah thanks man, I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I know you're not easy to please, and neither are the AOR fans. We did the best we could though....and I like to think it was worth the wait too. We'll see how the others feel. *prays* :) What are your personal feelings now that it's all said and done and about to be unleashed on the world?!! Bless me Father for I have sinned, it's been 5 years since my last album release and my fans are pissed! ...

Duran Duran (2003)

Duran Duran: Back to business in a new place and time. Duran guitarist Andy Taylor talks about the band's return to work and what that entails - dealing with the music industry, record labels and life on the road in 2003. Andy was also gracious to allow some talk of his solo, songwriting and production career. We had 30 minutes of scheduled interview time to cram in as much as possible. I think we did pretty well! At the peak of their popularity Duran Duran were the number one band on the planet. In a few short years, they went from unknowns releasing their debut album, to five celebrated stars, whose pictures adorned bedroom walls worldwide. The band's original and most celebrated line-up only ever recorded three studio and one live album – all done within a seemingly impossible time frame by today's standards. While the band lived life to excess and became ever more stalked as celebrities, pressure on singer Simon LeBon, keyboardist Nick Rhodes, guitarist Andy Taylor, bassist John Taylor and drummer Roger Taylor intensified. As their fame increased, things began to change and the band started to splinter. By 1985, a mere 5 years since that debut album, the band had ...

AOR Heaven NEH Records Z-Roxx Loud 1 Groove Machine Destiny Hot Tracks Target Wishing Well Perris Visual Vinyl       DAVID HUNGATE / Mecca - Bass Hi David. You are one of the legends of this rock genre, having started your recording career many years ago. Was Toto your first band? My recording career actually began in 1969....Toto began in 1977. Wow…Ok! Looking back, is their any particular segment of your career that you enjoyed most and consider the most rewarding? The period from the recording of Boz Scaggs' "Silk Degrees" (late '75) through Toto IV (1981) was the best. I worked on a number of projects with musicians like Jeff Porcaro, Dean Parks, Lukather, Jay Graydon, Ray Parker, David Paich, David Foster, and others....great rhythm sections, and some great pop/R&B music. No drum machines or click tracks...we just played. Is there a low point that stands out at all? My two years on the A&R staff of MCA Nashville (1985,86). I did very little playing and missed it greatly. What caused you to leave Toto at a period where the band was very successful? In 1982 I had already moved to Nashville and was getting my ...

Giant - David Huff (2001)

David Huff: I tried to get in touch with you, I guess I had the wrong number or something. MelodicRock.com: Yeah, Mario kept saying, “I'll get him to call you”. For some reason something in me tweaked that like, well what number is he going to call? I know it. But I thought, oh he must have it under control because I've got my phone number on the website, but he had my old number, so… That's what it was. Actually it was a fax number or something, so I faxed something. Oh it's a fax number now is it? Yeah. Oh dear. It's not mine. <laughs> Isn't it funny, man. Yeah, so I sent them a fax and then I called Mario and said, "Man I don't think it's the right number." And he said, "I think I got the wrong number, my mistake." Not a problem. Great to finally catch up with you anyway. Yeah man. So what part of Australia are you in? I'm in Hobart, which is the capital of Tasmania. Oh my gosh. I've been to Australia one time and loved it. I went through Sydney, Perth, I can't remember all ...

David Coverdale (2000)

DAVID COVERDALE The Into The Light Interview             You know, if you make music your mistress....you've got to accept her mood swings.... David Coverdale - 2000 This was a big interview for me. As a long time fan and devotee of everything Coverdale, it took a while to get David on the phone and this was it. Lucky for me David was in a chatty and expressive mood. Unlucky that it would take me this long to get the interview formatted and online. David quite often switched topic mid sentence and was certainly vocal on many issues. He also has a fine sense of humor. I hope that comes through and I hope the interview comes together OK and makes sense...most of the time! So, I owe you a debt of thanks I understand Andrew. Michael said you're an incredible supporter of what I do. Well it comes from being a long time fan David and I've got this site down, I guess it's the least I can do. Bless your heart. Very much, very much appreciated. Thank you very much. As you know, we're dabbling in this, this remarkable Internet thing for the ...

Styx - Dennis De Young (2000)

Dennis De Young is an established legend. No doubt. Speaking to Dennis was one of my bigger interviews and I would like to say that he was a pleasure to talk to and one of the funniest guys I have listened to. He is genuinely down to earth, humble and a very nice guy. Thanks to my awesome fiancée Cathy for typing this interview out for me. Even she commented how genuine Dennis sounded and I hope that comes across in the text... How are you? I hope you haven't been trying to get through? No I did try twice before when Jim Peterik gave me your number I think about 6.30 our time and the phone rang out… It's good to finally talk to you it is a great pleasure to talk to you. My pleasure also I've never talked to anyone in Australia EVER. Really, good grief. My wife has always had a burning desire to come down there. Well you've got an excuse now. Well yeah. She reads romance novels and a lot of them are set in Australia. I guess it is rugged and considered romantic down here. I don't know who knows! It's good to ...

Toto - David Paich (2000)

Hey David, I've been trying to get through but we've had some power problems today. Where are you calling from? Hobart, Tasmania. Oh right. How about you? LA right? Yes, you're down under and I'm up above here. I'm in LA and it's a gorgeous day here. Fantastic. Here it's blowing a gale here! How are things with the band then? Things are really good. The band's been touring and we've been playing around the United States doing Vegas and there's a lot of casinos we've been playing in different places. We're going to be playing in Caribbean and we're going down to Costa Rica and Mexico City here in April. The band is doing really well. We're taking a little bit of time off here and getting ready to promote our new album, which is 'Mindfields'. We've gone on a few shows like Donny and Marie Osmond and Rosie O Donnell and things like that you know. So we're just kind of entering a new phase here gearing up here to promote this new record. The way the release dates for the record are kind of speared across the world, this album is going to be around for a ...

Giant - Dann Huff (1999)

After many attempts at getting Dann on the phone, I was finally able to last week for a brief chat in between recording sessions in a Nashville studio. What you read may not be exactly what you wanted to hear, but at least the door is open to the chance of a new Giant record...maybe!   Hey Dann. Have you got a few minutes to talk? I sure do. I appreciate your time, thank you. Well it's great to get you on the phone. Yeah, sorry it's taken so long. No problem, it's just great to be able to talk to you. So how's life? Fine. You know, working ahead every day. Doing what seems like the same thing…but somehow you seem to make some headway and over a period of time you look back and see what you've done and it's more than you think when you are doing it. Well you've got quite an impressive body of work if I might say so, both as a producer and as a session guy now. Yeah well the session stuff has definitely been the predominant. Are you enjoying the producing side of it? Yeah it's kinda always ...

Danny Wilde (1998)

If given the task of listing my favourite ever songs, there is almost no chance of it happening. But I can name a few of them. Those are the songs that no matter how many times I play them, I never ever tire of them. One of these such songs belongs to Danny Wilde. 'Time Runs Wild' is a one in a million tune that made me a life long fan of Danny. So it was quite a great pleasure to be able to catch up with him on the release of his new transitional album. Here's what happened: Hey Danny, it's Andrew from Australia Hey Andrew…. how ya doing? I wasn't sure what time you were going to call. Yeah ( laughs ) I kinda left it a bit confused in Jill's mind there. Because it's pretty early….and I thought I better stick to the time she set up for me! So what time is it there then…like 5 in the morning? Yeah 5am. So how are you? Great, fine. I saw your webpage. Looks great. Great, so you're online then? Yeah. Did you ever see my web page? Dare - Darren Wharton (1998)

So Darren, great show. Well, you know it was something we had only put together in the last couple of days. We were trying to get the whole band to do it, but it was all a bit too... Hard? Yeah! well, we would love to come out and do it as a whole band, but it is the financial side of it, and the rehearsal side of it, obviously you need a lot more rehearsals with a full band, and we only got this together in the last couple of days. Great response from the crowd here. Yeah, very kind, yeah. So the record has got chart entry in Sweden, things are looking good? Yeah, it's okay. Doing a record like this with people like Mario is great because all you can try and do is your best. it's not like a massive budget, and we are all trying to do things to do it, because we believe in it, and want to do our best. It's not like an A&M sort of thing, where you have unlimited this and unlimited that. I really do appreciate being with people like Mario and Magnus, because they are in ...

Daniel Flores (2006)

Daniel Flores: Sweden's Man Of The Moment   Daniel, you are fast becoming the go-to man for session drum work, so there's a few tings to cover here. But first and foremost, we are here to promote your new Mind's Eye album Walking On H20. The album is a concept album about nothing less than human evolution. Couldn't you find anything more light and fluffy to write about?!!! :) Hahahaha Well the topic of world terror had already been taken by George Bush so Human evolution has the only theme left for me… ;-) Seriously, I thought I was a great lyrical theme with the potential of being dramatic and serious at the same time. I mean who dares to write about something like Human evolution? Who dares to say out loud that Darwin's evolution theory has huge wholes in its socket? I wanted to create some discussions about these facts, its fun to provoke feelings into people's minds. I am a guy who likes to provoke, it's so much funnier than to be on the safe side. Still, it's only music. That's why I chose the theme, to encourage people and at the same time still make some good old ...

From The Inside (2004)

From The Inside: Danny Vaughn and his return to a more melodic sound. Danny talks about this new project and his upcoming tour with the classic Tyketto. Hey Danny, great to see you back in action with the new From The Inside release. After two well received Vaughn albums, what drew you towards this project? I'm always looking for challenges. Things that I haven't tried before. I feel that a musician gets stagnant if he or she only works along the same set lines all the time. I have never attempted to interpret other people's songs on a recording before. It isn't as easy as you might think and I really enjoyed trying our best to make these songs our own. Also, I was very unhappy with my previous record label and this opportunity from Frontiers seemed like the perfect way to test new waters. So far I'm very happy with this arrangement. There was obviously a certain willingness to record some other people's songs and also return to a more AOR sound, what was the thought process going into this record? It was something like, "Here goes nothing!" You have to be willing to fall on your face sometimes. ...

Dreamtide (2003)

xxxx   Dreamtide: The guys get daring on album number 2. Helge Engelke and Olaf Senkbeil talk about the brand new Dreamtide album and the songs that make up the new opus. Interview with Dreamtide guitarist and mastermind Helge Engelke. I really like the style of the new album - you seem to be closer to a Fair Warning style sound. Was that a deliberate move? Oops, right the very first one is a question I didn't expect at all. But first of all, thank you. Having been in Fair Warning for more than 10 years I would have estimated that 80% of the songs on this record NEVER would have been on any FW record. Maybe I am wrong but that would mean that the tastes of my ex-fellow members have changed drastically. To answer the question more straight ahead: There was no intention at all, not even a single thought about it, to get closer to FW. What did you have in mind when you started to write the new songs? I'm a simple mind, so most of the time there is not much going on there. I wouldn't even say that I write songs. I would call it 'discovering' what ...

Departure - Empire (2003)

Empire: Back for album number two - more great European hard rock. Rolf Munkes talks about the new album, new singer in Tony Martin and a couple of other projects he has on the go. Hi Rolf, the first Empire album was well received, were you happy with the way it turned out? Yeah, people liked it and it still doesn't hurt me when I hear it again (That's a good sign). I don't hear it often but after the release of Trading Souls I took a look back and heard it again and it was fine to hear it. We did a good job! As well we had releases in Japan and Russia. Lance King and Mark Boals were both used as vocalists - what was the reason they were both not used this time around? The main reason was that I wanted to be able to bring Empire on Tour after the release while watching my budget. It's a big distance and some things are a bit complicate to proceed. So I made that hard decision and looked for a European based singer. I must say that I enjoyed the new album and the factor of using only ...

Drive She Said - Mark Mangold (2003)

Mark Mangold: American Tears to Drive She Said to The Sign and a new Freaky project. Mark Mangold runs through the new Drive She Said album, his love of working with the people he does and the new Magic Freak Society project. Ok Mark, thanks for taking the time out to be interrogated. There is much more to the man than just a keyboard player - how would you describe yourself? Mmm, I don't think I would actually. That's a hard one. Just another one of the 6 billion Universes living and breathing on this planet, and I must say I'm sure enjoying it. You are a songwriter by trade - could there possibly be a tougher trade to make a living from on the face of the earth? Soldier......But yes anything in the "arts" is subjective and hard and it often comes down to pleasing an "executive" before it even gets out there to the world. That has seriously stifled the making of music unfortunately. I know a lot of my readers are interested in the industry side of things and behind the scenes. In relation to your songs being adopted by same very high profile names such as ...

Departure (2003)

Departure: Mike Walsh feeling confortable in his musical role. Departure guitarist Mike Walsh talks about the band's new album and enlisting the talents of new singer Timothy Lewis. First up, congratulation son the new album, I like it best of all the Departure albums and the general reaction seems to be very favorable. First of all I am pleased that you are enjoying the new record. What were the circumstances that lead to Dave Baldwin not being available for this album? The situation w/ Dave Baldwin was a mutual separation that seemed to fit both of us. Musically, we each had differences that we could not ignore. Plus I was really looking for a sound more like the first record. The record labels at the time were really keen on getting the next record out and Dave was at the right place at the right time for us to do the record, so we did. And how did Timothy Lewis come into the picture? I received a tape of Tim from my label in England, he seemed to be what I was looking for in a singer so I phoned him up in Orlando, Florida and he flew to New ...

Genius - Daniele Liverani (2002)

xx   Daniele Liverani: The Genius behind the music. We have all heard rock opera's...we have also heard long rock opera's, but a Triple CD, released over three years? Sounds like an ambitious project. Just who is behind the Genius opera and hear the entire opera's story line. Let's go right back to the beginning. Can you tell us a little about your history as a musician? I started to play piano when I was a child (at 6) attending a local classical school that gave me all the theory and harmonic notions, then I self approached guitar at 16 (1987), applying it all the classical notions. I learned from classical piano experience. In 1993 (at 22) I won a national contest as Italian best guitar player and I won a paid trip and stage at GIT School in LA. I stayed there for a long period, attending lessons from many of the biggest guitar player of the scene...it was there that I put together the lineup to record the my first solo project album 'Viewpoint' that would have been published only later by Elevate records in 1999. I also studied bass at 24 and drums at 25, I always had a great love for both ...

The Cage (2002)

The Cage Dario Mollo Speaks... Hi Dario, congratulations on a fine album. Thank you very much for the fantastic review, I'm really glad that you enjoy the album. Yes, I did. Firstly, you recorded the debut Cage record and left Tony Martin to record with the great Glenn Hughes on Voodoo Hill. What circumstances arose to allow you to again hook up with Tony for The Cage 2? Tony is one of the best singer in the world and he's my friend, for me it was a natural choice to work with him again.   Did you have a pre-established plan with this album? Yes I had a plan to work with Tony again and the music was constructed before we got together. I ask that as I noticed that The Cage 2 is a true partnership between you and Tony, as you wrote all the songs together. Yes this is true in one sense, because although the music was written previously but then Tony received the songs at his home and adjusted them so that the vocals would work with the tracks. We work so well together that we trust each other to make the songs work even if we are ...

Vaughn - Danny Vaughn (2001)

DANNY VAUGHN mm   Good to talk to you again Danny, how are things in your part of the world, post Sept. 11. Everyone's Ok I hope? There were some worries initially as Michael and I both have some friends and family in the Police, Fire Dept., and medical professions, but we have been fortunate in that respect. Things are still very strange over here. Lots of paranoia and tension. But I guess we have joined much of the rest of the world in that respect. The second Vaughn album was released just prior to that unfortunate date - has this set back the sales and/or promotion of the album in any way? Over shadowed it as such? I'm sure that it has affected things but it seems like such a small worry compared to everything else. I'm hoping that this acoustic solo tour I'm going to do in February will get my head back on music by reconnecting with my friends. To anyone that hasn't bought the album yet - what can you say to convince them to take a look at it? I of course, can't recommend it highly enough!! Ummmm... it's got a really pretty girl on ...

Danny Danzi (Track By Track)

DANNY DANZI - SOMEWHERE LOST IN TIME OUT NOW Z RECORDS UK/EUROPE/USA AVALON MUSIC - JAPAN       Says Danny: To me, Somewhere Lost In Time is reality, fire, passion, and feeling. The one thing I tried to capture with this album was "feel." No drum machines or sequencers were used, and the nothing was quantized for perfect timing. I did what I felt was best for production and reality for a one man album. It shows versatility, song writing, and in a few songs, a "look mom, no hands" attitude. 1) Save Us This song is my religious song to the world. I am not a preacher, nor am I a religious radical or Christian rocker that uses God to try to sell records. Those people in my eyes are the sinners. I do love God, and will talk about Him to those that wish to converse about the subject. I wanted this song to lash out and grip those that listened to it, to believe that there is something more after this life. The world is bad, but can be good! It's what you make of it. The song also hits very hard with a hook ...

VAUGHN (Track X Track)

FEARLESS Danny Vaughn - This couldn't be anything else but an opening track. It's an anthem in every sense of the word. Complete with a giant, sing along part at the end. Michael brought out the cannons for the drum parts. (I think he's been working out). Lyrically, it's about befriending or loving any one that you choose regardless of height, weight, color, status, religion, or any other conditions that get placed on us. To live Fearlessly is to live righteously and happily regardless of how you are perceived. Michael C. Arbeeny - The second I heard this one I knew we had a winner. Has that WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS vibe one would hear at a sporting event. Gets the blood pumpin and makes you want to turn up the stereo all the way. HAUNTED DV - This is one of 2 co-writes on the cd. My friend Darren Futch from the band FLINT was my sounding board as I played with different ways of presenting the story. A simple song about two people living in the same town that are perfect for each other but never quite seem to get to meet. Plenty of pathos here! There's a problem ...
