Kevin Chalfant (2008)

Kevin Chalfant: Flying To AOR Freedom. Kevin Chalfant is another artist who should be listened to - as he has been there and done that and he isn't afraid to do it by himself if need be. This interview was done late last year - just prior to the MRF show in October, so forgive me for getting online late. But it is still very relevant and Kevin's new album is still very much a current release - so listen up! Hey Kevin. I can't even recall the last time we did a formal interview. It's been too long. It's been probably since Running With The Wind. Yeah, it could have been. I don't know if we did anything with any of the Two Fires stuff. Maybe…yeah. But here we are now again! Here we are. I was just looking through photos of when we were in Manchester and if it's all right with you I think I'm gonna post some on my website. Oh yes please do. I don't think there's anything too incriminating there is there? (laughter) Not at all. That was a pretty fun weekend wasn't it? [Gods Festival, UK 2002] Oh my gosh, we ...

REO Speedwagon - Kevin Cronin (2007)

Kevin Cronin: Finding His Own Way. REO Speedwagon frontman Kevin Cronin talks everything behind and about the band's long awaited new studio album. Kevin is an extremely passionate guy - especially in regards to the new album - and I hope that shines through in this interview. G'Day Kevin. First I must apologize for taking ten years to get you on the phone for an interview! Well I apologize for our band being together since 1971 and having yet to play a gig in your entire country. That makes absolutely no sense to me. Well you're in good company. There are some fine, fine bands that have never made it down here, unfortunately. Yeah, well that doesn't make any sense. Our guitar player, Dave Amato spends a lot of time in Australia. He played guitar with Jimmy Barnes in it must have been the late '80s he spent a good deal of time in Australia. He's sort of hipped up to what to expect when we make it down there and it sounds like a lot of fun to me. Well, one day I hope. You're actually doing a media storm over there in the States aren't you? Yeah, ...

Kelly Keagy (2007)

Night Ranger Part 2: Kelly Keagy. Night Ranger drummer Kelly Keagy talks about the new Night Ranger album and also his new solo album I'm Alive, plus working with Jim Peterik and his new project Scrap Metal. Hey Kelly, good to talk to you again. Hey Andrew. What did I catch you in the middle of? I'm working on the Scrap Metal band because we've got our first gig up Connecticut in a casino and we're gonna film it so we've got all these details we've got to take care of. Just, you know, learning everybody's songs and it's quite an undertaking. Then I'm doing interviews for this album of course and trying to get ready for touring and stuff like that. Both for myself and Night Ranger included. I can't believe it's only your first Scrap Metal gig. You seem to have been doing that for a while now. Well we started out like a year ago last March. We thought we were gonna have more gigs than that buy we were all so busy. We couldn't really pull it together. Plus we didn't have anything to promote; no records or anything like that. We still don't, but at ...

Keith Olsen (2004)

Keith Olsen: Producer, Engineer, Classical Artist and Industry Advocate.       Famed record producer Keith Olsen talks in detail about the life of a producer and some of his experiences working with such artists as Sammy Hagar, Rick Springfield, Fleetwood Mac, Foreigner, Pat Benatar, Kingdom Come, Eddie Money and more. He also talks about the record industry's battle with file sharing and much more. A very special thanks to Ron and Don Higgins for transcribing the 90 minute+ interview for me. Cheers guys. Hi Keith, many thanks for your time and your willingness to talk to me about your career. I gather you're on the West Coast? Yes, I'm up here in Seattle. How long have you been there? I've been here 3 and a half years. OK, OK, and previously in LA? Yeah. LA for 27 years before that. I got head-hunted by this company called Mackie Designs (www.mackiedesigns.com). I had to go to their office in Seattle. Yes…. And I ran their professional products division. And we have parted ways. When they were purchased, Greg Mackie was bought out, and I thought it would be time for me to go too. And you'll stay up there, do you ...

Kelly Keagy (2001)

T h e Time Passes I n t e r v i e w         Hey Kelly, thanks for your time again. The album's out in Europe, are Frontiers are going to do the US release for you? If I can get something better, they'll go for that. So I'm going to see if I can use some of my contacts around that I know. But any of the companies that I know are majors and they're not really keen on signing an act like me. What, good music you mean? Yeah. They want all that..., anyway. Maybe if you dye your hair blond and wear shorts or something and a baggy top. And pierce everything and brand my face. And play music with no melody in it at all. Absolutely. And scream a bit more. It's not a sign of age is it? Definitely not. I think we just like good music. Yeah, we do. And you know what? I've got some kids on the site that e-mail me and say, hey, I'm nineteen and I haven't been corrupted by the crap on MTV. Some of those kids do like good music. That's cool. That's great. ...

Steelhouse Lane - Keith Slack (1999)

Hey Keith, I haven't seen much info on you out there, so we might go right back and get the basics from ya! You are based in Texas, right? Always been a Texan? Yes, I'm currently living in Beaumont, TX. Born and raised here, I feel blessed to have grown up in such a musically rich area that such musicians as Billy Gibbons, Janis Joplin and Edgar & Johnny Winter to name a few, came from. When did you start singing? Well, I actually started playing drums first at the age of four. I never wanted to be the front man, I hated the way my voice sounded at the time. I was more or less talked into it by friends and a few beers of course. I guess that was around 1995. Shortly after that I met Jonathan Grell and we formed Mudpie. Who were your influences growing up? My parents took me to see Three Dog Night when I was four and it was all over after that. I remember begging for Frampton Comes Alive, which I received for my sixth birthday, and then it was the usuals...Kiss, Hendrix etc... And now - are differences in what influences ...

Khymera (2003)

Khymera: A traditional AOR album featuring one of rock's great singers. Daniele Liverani - Khymera's musical director Daniele Liverani talks about the challenges of making the acclaimed album. Hi Daniele. First off, are you personally happy with the responses you have received back and the reviews you have read? Well, I must say that I've read great reviews about this Khymera album and of course I'm really excited about this! I'm especially very satisfied with the production and mix quality...I really hear everything well and in the right place in terms of sounds, balance, vocals...and this is very important to make a record sound good! Did you enjoy making the album? I enjoy a lot doing this Khymera, even if I didn't made the songwriting of these songs, I really did my best for making them sound very personal and original, staying of course into the AOR straight rock that this kind of songs were requiring. So it was not only a production, arrangement job for me. I definitely feel this album close to my sensibility since I put all my style and experience on its creation. I must say that it was very interesting to test my ...

Two Fires - Kevin Chalfant (2002)

33   G'Day Kevin, Ok mate, here goes with some interview questions. First up - Two Fires' new album Ignition is due out in a couple of weeks. Here's your chance to pitch to the fans why they need to buy this record! Ignition sees you team with Josh Ramos again, a long time buddy - you two have a great chemistry together, how has this developed since you first teamed with him on the first Storm album? Actually, Josh and teamed up before the Storm. We did many recordings together starting with TheVU. Our relationship is like any other band or family. We make great music together, but do not always see eye to eye...he is much taller than I am :^) At what point did you two decide to start a project again together? I had been having conversations with Frontiers. They asked me to make a CD for them. I called Josh and asked him if he would play on it. He was as frustrated with The Storm parked in dry dock as I was. We were back in the musical swamp together. How do you carry out the recording process? I know you have your own studio ...

Two Fires - Kevin Chalfant (2000)

Interview with Two Fires vocalist Kevin Chalfant - May 2000. TWO FIRES: OK Kevin....On the verge of the album's release, how do you rank this record among the others that you have participated on? There are things that I like and dislike about everything that I have recorded. I rate this very high on the list. I am very pleased with the songs, the players, the performances, the sound. I compare it with the debut Storm CD. That is what I gauged this Two Fires with. You and Josh have a partnership that goes back several years now. Did you guys do anything different in the recording process this time around, or did you just pick up where you normally would? Josh and met in 1983 on a recording that I was doing at Prairie Sun Recorders. We just fit together in music. This album is pure AOR. It seems to me that it was recorded with the die-hard fan in mind. Was that the aim of the record, or what was your vision going into this? Yes, this is a fan record. If you don't have your fans, you don't sell records, you don't tour, you don't have any fun. ...

Night Ranger - Kelly Keagy (1996)

Okay, so we all know who Night Ranger are, if not, check out my Jack Blades interview. This however was a slight variation on the form of the band, with original members Kelly Keagy and Brad Gillis joined by ex-Jeff Paris bass man Gary Moon. They went onto record the very fine album 'Feeding Off The Mojo'. Here's the story. So Kelly, how is the band and what are you up to currently? The band is preparing to tour the south behind the newly released single ‘Precious Time’. All the reviews I have read for 'Feeding Off The Mojo' have been excellent, are you happy with the reception for the album? Radio is still focused on playing alternative music, so getting airplay has been frustrating. However, we have been gratified by the reviews. It seems the consensus is it’s a great record and will be a shame if it doesn’t get the proper attention. Many bands have comprimised their sound for the trends. 'Mojo' is a very contemporary sound, while still retaining everything a classic Night Ranger album should. How did you go about the song writing? Writing the songs came naturally, we can’t do it any ...

KEVIN SHIRLEY: DISTORTION TO DEATH THREATS - LIFE IN A PRODUCER'S CHAIR

Kevin Shirley: Distortion To Death Threats - Life In A Producer's Chair Mega-Producer/Mixer/Engineer Kevin Shirley talks direct from THE CAVE about working with some of rock's biggest legends and with acts famous for infighting.   Great to talk to you Kevin. What are you sitting there working on right now? Right now I'm doing a song with Joe Bonamassa with Vince Gill on guitar, and John Hyatt on vocals as well. That's an interesting combo. Yeah - Nashville boys. I'll be doing a new album with him in, I think….coming up soon. Fantastic. So, you're sitting in the cave in Malibu? I'm sitting in the cave in Malibu as we speak. Very good. It's a good place to be. Yeah, yeah. How much time have you put into building that studio now over the years? Um…not that much time. I just did it. I mean, I just built it and then I just update it from time to time. But it's like phenomenal; it's basically a mixing studio but I do vocals and some guitars and things here. But it's basically just a ...
