Rik Emmett (2008)

Rik Emmett: No More Pink Elephants. Canadian rock legend Rik Emmett talks over his vast musical career - Triumph to his collected solo works and the new Airtime project. Andrew from MelodicRock.com Rik. Hello Andrew. A great pleasure to talk to you. Well it's nice to talk to you too. It's been too long. We did an email interview about many years ago or several years ago at least, but never a phone interview and I'm really pleased to touch base with you. That's great, it's nice to talk to you too. How are things? Where have I reached you, at home in Canada? Yeah, I'm sitting in my studio and all is right with the world. The Toronto Maple Leaves hockey team has had a lovely victory this evening. Between interviews I was watching them play hockey and it takes me back to my childhood. When they win I feel good, when they lose I feel like something's not right. Where about it Toronto or in the area do you live? I live in Mississauga which is sort of a western bedroom community. It's a city in its own right. Yes, I lived on Queen St. West in ...

REO Speedwagon - Kevin Cronin (2007)

Kevin Cronin: Finding His Own Way. REO Speedwagon frontman Kevin Cronin talks everything behind and about the band's long awaited new studio album. Kevin is an extremely passionate guy - especially in regards to the new album - and I hope that shines through in this interview. G'Day Kevin. First I must apologize for taking ten years to get you on the phone for an interview! Well I apologize for our band being together since 1971 and having yet to play a gig in your entire country. That makes absolutely no sense to me. Well you're in good company. There are some fine, fine bands that have never made it down here, unfortunately. Yeah, well that doesn't make any sense. Our guitar player, Dave Amato spends a lot of time in Australia. He played guitar with Jimmy Barnes in it must have been the late '80s he spent a good deal of time in Australia. He's sort of hipped up to what to expect when we make it down there and it sounds like a lot of fun to me. Well, one day I hope. You're actually doing a media storm over there in the States aren't you? Yeah, ...

Richie Zito (2006)

xx   Richie Zito: The man behind some true melodic rock classics. Starting out as a session guitarist, to being part of Elton's John band, to a partnership with Giorgio Moroder, to award winning production work for the likes of Cheap Trick, Bad English, Tyketto, Eddie Money, Heart and now his own solo record and record label. Richie Zito has seen it all. Read about some of that right here.     How's yourself Richie? I'm very well, thank you. Look, great pleasure to talk with you. I've been a fan of your work since Cheap Trick's Lap of Luxury. You're going to make me feel old, be careful. Haha. That's probably the oldest record I've got of you producing. I was just thinking about that the other day. It was December of '86. We had everything recorded and mixed. The only thing that wasn't recorded and mixed was “The Flame” and a couple of others. Okay. And then we came back from holiday and mixed the last 2 or 3 songs very early in 1987. That brings back a lot of memories and that was quite some time ago. It was indeed. You've got an amazing catalog. I've even bought CDs on ...

Ricky Phillips (2003)

Ricky Phillips: A new man joins the Styx club.   Ricky Phillips taks about his new rols as Styx bass player and what's ahead for him and how it feels to be part of a band once again after a long time in the studio. So Ricky, I must thank you for taking to time to chat and offer some comments on joining Styx! Congratulations! I'm a long time fan of the band, but even more so a fan of Glen Burtnik and Lawrence Gowan, who I thought were great choices to join the band. Yeah, I'm just the opposite...a huge STYX fan who is now a Lawrence and Glen fan.. Lawrence Gowan is the most amazing keyboardist. He can jump from rock to ragtime to classical like the flip of a switch...and scary good. He's also hysterically funny... I didn't know too much about Glen Burtnik. I had heard his name but he's East Coast and I'm West so our paths hadn't crossed. When I first got the call for the gig I went to a show in Orange County with Tommy, Todd and the tour manager George Packer. When we got there I asked someone to ...

Robin McAuley (2000)

Thanks for taking my call Robin. So how ya doing? I'm doing good. So how is Australia this morning? A beautiful sunny day. Nice Saturday morning in summer, it's great. You have the day off, and you're calling me - what a guy. No get real! I'm pleased to catch up with you. Like I said the other day I've been a fan since Perfect Timing. On no, now you're making me feel really old. That's not that long ago! Maybe I should start back there at the beginning. Where were you before MSG, Grand Prix right? When I was in Grand Prix, ironically I was approached by Michael at that time. Grand Prix was playing in London and they came down to a show. We were scheduled to go out on tour, I think with Sammy Hagar on the Standing Hampton tour. At the time I let it go and got some bad press out of it. 'Who does he think he is refusing this gig' & 'He mustn't know what's good for his career'. Blah blah blah....(That's Robin saying that, not me editing the interview!!) After Grand Prix I was part of a project GMT with Brian ...

Rubber - Harry Hess (1999)

Hey Harry. So the album is called Rubber then? Yep! So the album is called Rubber - maybe that's what you are going to call yourselves now for outside Japan? Yeah. We decided to change the name for everywhere except Japan, cause things are going so well for us in Japan, but we thought a good tie in would be to produce the same album cover and call the album Rubber. Sure, that makes for a smooth transition then doesn't it? Well hopefully, yeah..haha. Love the Rubber ducky by the way. Haha thanks! Canadian release date? Not until the New Year. They are going to be starting to go to radio in Jan - so either late Feb. or beginning of March release. It's going to be quite staggered because the Harem Scarem record isn't coming out anywhere but Japan. So we are really going to be concentrating getting things in motion for this release for Rubber and because it's a new thing they want to have a long build up time to get things organized. And we are also going to be working on other territories that we have let slip in the last few years. We are ...

Rick Springfield (1997)

Rick's first ever online interview - Interviewed via phone end of June 1997. Keep an eye out for two exclusive sound bytes, from two tracks left off Sahara Snow!     Rick was born Richard Springthorpe, in Sydney Australia in 1949. His father was a career soldier, with Rick growing up on army bases around the country. He received a guitar for his thirteenth birthday, and described his love of playing as 'as hard core as you get at sixteen'. His first band 'The Jordy Boys' played regularly in the rough pubs of Melbourne, leading him to leave school and join his first full time rock band 'Rock House'. They earned a reputation strong enough to be invited to play to troops in Vietnam, during the late 60's. Back in Australia, Rick moved into the now legendary pioneering Australian rock act 'Zoot'. He joined with Beeb B, who went onto join Little River Band, and Daryl Cotton, who went onto form the also now legendary Sherbet. Zoot soon became one of the biggest acts in Australia, and had a top 10 single with a cover of 'Eleanor Rigby', styled in the bands' unique relentless pop/rock style. Rick subsequently won awards for the ...

Ricky Philips (1997)

Ricky Phillips has been more then just the bass player in some of hard rocks' best bands, spanning from the late seventies to the late nineties, when Ricky continues to write and record some of the more classic recent releases. It all started in the seventies with a little know act called the Baby's, featuring the fresh talent of Ricky, vocalist John Waite and keyboard player Jonathan Cain. The band became huge and went on to sell millions of records. In the eighties Rick took to television and film writing, until the chance to team with Waite and Cain came again in Bad English, who bought us two albums of tunes pure AOR is made of. After Bad English fell apart badly, Ricky continued to write, produce and record as a session player, in high demand. Most recently he has played bass on the Coverdale/Page album, and recorded a great album with ex-Toto vocalist Fergie Frederikson. On that album, Ricky produced, wrote most of the material, sang lead on one track and backing on the rest, and of course played his bass. In tune with always keeping busy, Ricky talks about another Frederikson/Phillips record, possible liaison with Bruce ...

Rush Of Ushers (2003)

Rush Of Ushers: A new name to some familiar faces. Daniel O'Breien talks about his new Rush Of Ushers project and writing music for film and TV.. Hi Daniel, thanks for doing this short Q&A with me! You have worked with Magnus @ Atenzia previously with MTM Music and your solo album Beautiful Disaster. How do you rate that album looking back? When I look back at "Brilliant New Disaster", I still feel very good about it. I think there are some powerful songs that still stand up, and lyrically, it was a very good time for me. Songs like "Medicate", and "Powder", contain some of my favorite lyrics. I always rated it a very good modern pop/rock album which still sounds fresh. Were you disappointed it didn't get a wider release / wider recognition? Yes, very much so! I believe there are some hits on the record, and I wish that there would have been more coverage of the album, but oh well, life moves on. I'm hoping that my new release will generate some positive results. It's very rewarding when people are moved by your music. Maybe it was a few years before it's time? I don't ...

Royal Hunt (2003)

Royal Hunt: A new record, a tougher sound. Andre Andersen talks about the new Eye Witness album and playing The Gods 2003. How did you enjoy The Gods performance this year and how would you rate it? The festival was great - very well organized. The actual show was pretty good - the sound (or lights) will never be perfect in a situation like this, but it was god and we played fine and reaction from the people was great. Sorry I didn't get to meet you all in person - I didn't see you guys backstage at all! The whole area was pretty crowded, so we went in and out rather quickly. How do you find playing the UK over other places in Europe? It was nice. We were very surprised that people knew the words of most of the songs - after all, it was our first show in UK. Has the dynamic of the band changed at over the years? We seem to be busier every year, so it kind of hard to notice the actual dynamics... How about the recording process - you are a few albums in now with John West - have things changed in ...

Richie Kotzen (2003)

Richie Kotzen: Breaking up is hard to do.... Guitarist, singer and songwriter Richie Kotzen talks about his new solo albumm Change, plus all things Mr. Big and that new Influences & Connections record. Hi Richie, thanks for taking the time out to answer some questions for me. How has the album been going where it has already been released? I am very happy about the way the CD has been doing. In Japan we have had 2 TV tie ins. One with the song Change and another with the song Get A Life. I will be touring Japan in September and plan on touring Europe in November. We made a new deal with Frontiers for Europe and they have been doing great with the new CD. Change will be released in north America on Shrapnel Records within the next few months. You are an extremely diverse guitar player - has that helped in the marketing of your name, or hindered as the press doesn't know what category to box you into? I can't say if it has helped or hurt. I am who I am. When I made my first CD I became known as a guitarist. As time went on ...

Robert Fleischman (2002)

Robert Fleischman: Back to active duty. Former Vinnie Vincent and one time Journey singer Robert Fleischman is back with a new solo album - only his second in 20 years! Congratulations on the album - it's nice to hear you back behind the mike again. Why so long between drinks for you? Thank you. Music is so different here in the U.S. They want you to start out in the womb to be the next Bob Dylan or Madonna. I think in Europe people like Artists; whereas, the U.S. is into “fast-food” music of the day. So I took other musical roads. What has Robert Fleischman been doing to keep busy the last few years? I have been doing music for TV, Film, and Commercials. I'm heavily into Electronic Music, Painting, my family, and I write almost every day. I have recorded several albums all different from the others; hopefully to be released in the future—possibly on my website. World In Your Eyes contains some fine melodic songs - what time frame where these songs written in? Within the last year. Several are co-written with guitarist Josh Ramos - how did you two come to work together? Frontier ...

The Storm - Ron Wikso (1997)

Ron Wikso is a busy man. Not only is he the drummer from AOR supergroup 'The Storm', featuring Journey bassman Ross Valory and ex-Journeyman Gregg Rolie (and Steve Smith initially), but he is also the drummer in a revamped Foreigner. Add Cher and David Lee Roth to his resume, and I would say that would make him an essential gentleman to talk to! Here goes... So Ron, how long have you been playing drums, and how did you get started? This year marks 30 years! I started when I was REALLY young!! Basically, I just started with a neighbor of mine showing me some stuff on a practice pad and then my mom got me private lessons from the local elementary school's band director. Then, a couple of years later, when I was old enough, I joined the school band and kept it up from there. What was you're first big gig? If you mean my first big tour, that would have to be the Cher tour that I got in 1989. We did the MTV Music Awards, Prime Time Live and lots of other major TV stuff in addition to the arenas and amphitheaters that we were playing at on tour. ...

Rudy Sarzo (1996)

Rudy Sarzo has been one of the premier hard rock bass players, both in session work, as well as in a band enviroment. He started out with Quiet Riot, with Kevin Dubrow, and built the band into a top five stadium act. He was part of the best Ozzy Osbourne band ever, including the legendary Randy Rhodes and drummer Tommy Alderidge. In recent years, Rudy has recorded and toured with Whitesnake, recorded a blues hard rock album with Aldridge, Vandenburg and ex-Little Caeser vocalist Ron Young, played sessions with Paul Rodges and Alice Cooper, and conceived his own record label - Sarzo Music. With the label, Rudy has set out to expose the world to Spanish rock acts, with new CDs out soon. For the low down on the goss, read on.... Rudy, it’s great to talk to you! What’s going on right now? I'm getting ready to start pre-production on the new RATT album. I heard you were involved in the reformed Ratt. How did you get involved with that? When the original bassist, Juan Croucier, declined the offer to rejoin RATT the manager suggested me. Warren and I have already toured together (Whitesnake 1994) and I know ...

Rick Springfield (Track By Track)

RICK SPRINGFIELD - KARMA RELEASED IN JAPAN 1998 - VICTOR ENTERTAINMENT. RELEASED IN USA, CANADA & GERMANY 1999 - PLATINUM ENTERTAINMENT KARMA - Produced By Rick Springfield & Bill Drescher.   RICK: GREEN BILL: YELLOW His Last Words: A poem I wrote about the death of my dad that my sons. my brother Mike and I spoke over some weird piano and FX. I played the piano totally separately from the rest of the track and when I laid it in, it fit perfectly, even ended at the end of the sound FX. Really synchronistic. It's Always Something: About a moment in my life that taught me how life is a balance, Yin Yang type thing. Just as Jessie's Girl finally started to catch fire in 1981, my dad died. We put a lot of time into the loops and live drums, getting them just right, and it shows real well in the different sections of this song. Religion Of The Heart: A song about personal spiritual discipline, not about finding Christianity. Used a sub bass part in choruses that makes the track sound extra healthy in that area. Beautiful Prize: A song about incest I wrote after a meeting with a victim. ...

RICK SPRINGFIELD Talks Influences Behind 'The Snake King'

A short interview I did with RICK SPRINGFIELD to promote The Snake King record. As published in the last Fireworks Magazine.     Rick Springfield is one of those evergreen performers that just seems to keep on going. And he never stands still, bringing his fans new music that challenges and pushes new boundaries. In his 69th year, Rick delivers a first - a blues based album that seems him delve deep into the swampy authentic delta blues that only the bravest attempt. At the same time, the familiar elements that define his music aren't far from the front. A typically self-depreciating Rick Springfield discusses the new album 'The Snake King' and what drives him still after all these years.   So Rick, I'll keep this brief as I know you're busier now than ever before. You're taking some musical liberties with this and indeed, the last album. Are you driven by a sense of needing to feel as if you've covered all bases while you are still able to? (Not wanting to age you here!). I'm 68 and figure I can record music that makes me happy or at least fulfils a need ...

RICK SPRINGFIELD - THE VENUS IN OVERDRIVE INTERVIEW

Rick Springfield: Back In Overdrive Rick Springfield doesn't rush his albums out, so when a new one arrives there is always an air of anticipation. With Venus In Overdrive, Rick steps back into the power pop domain he owned in the early 80s, while adding a strong contemporary twist that makes this material some of his most classic and most catchy in a long time. I spoke with Rick a week or so back about the new album, the upcoming tribute album and what keeps him fit and ticking after all these years in the business. Good Morning, Rick! How are ya? I'm good. How ya doing? That's good. I'm ok… You will have to excuse my rough voice though; it's 5 in the morning. Oi. (laughs) But, here we are. Thank you so for the opportunity with Venus in Overdrive with Angelmilk in Europe…we'll do the very best job that we can. Great. I'm actually really excited about this. So why Europe now? Or, why not before? I know you are very proud of this record. Yeah, I think because of this record, the strength of the record and ...
