Melodic Briefs

Since 2010 MelodicRock Records has been at the forefront of some of the best melodic music made available to fans.

It has been a great honor to be a part of each and every release – whether it be championing a new artist; digging something out of the vaults; or a brand-new release from an established act.

2019 sees MRR reach the milestone of 100 releases. So what better way to celebrate the milestone than a compilation of the artists featured on MRR.

This however, isn’t your average ‘best of’ affair – this compilation will feature songs that didn’t make the albums MRR released – hence the title ‘Left Off The First 99’.

‘Left Off The First 99’ will offer a range of bonus tracks featured from the first 99 releases, plus some exclusive unreleased tracks from the recording sessions that spawned those albums.

And for good measure – a little taste of what’s to come in the year ahead, with some exclusive preview tracks from upcoming MRR releases.

MRR100 is a 2CD set priced at $25 (including airmail shipping) and is strictly limited to 500 units.

Details and pre-order link available MONDAY.

Frontiers Music Srl is excited to announce the signing of PASSION, a new UK band created by former Night By Night vocalist, Daniel Rossall aka 'Lion Ravarez’.

Inspired by the hard rock giants of the 80’s and 90’s, the idea of forming a new band sparked in Rossall's mind when he collaborated on a song in 2017 with other former members of Night By Night. The resulting song, which could be described as amalgamation of early '90s classic hard rock with '80s AOR, was so encouraging that it pushed Rossall to create a whole albums worth of material.

Rossall decided to send some of the demos he was working on to Frontiers and said demos immediately sparked the interest of the label who eagerly signed Passion to the label’s roster.

"Passion is very honored and proud to be a new member of the Frontiers family,” says Rossall "It's a great pleasure to be among friends, influences, and other dedicated artists who all look to deliver the best music possible. We are very excited for the release of the debut album and cannot wait to perform these songs for rock fans all over the world. This is a fantastic musical opportunity for us and I would like to thank Frontiers for providing a platform to deliver our music to the right audience. Let's ROCK!”

While Rossall played most of the instruments on the album and produced it, make no mistake, PASSION is a band. 2019 will see "The Rise of Passion" with Lion Ravarez on lead vocals, Weston James Jr. on bass and backing vocals, Chance Vanderlain on guitar and backing vocals, and Bobby Laker on drums. An absolute must for fans of AC/DC, Aerosmith, KISS, Danger Danger, Foreigner, Journey, Ratt, Van Halen, and the like.

Be sure to follow the band on social media to receive album updates:

ARfm are saddened to report the passing of Donna C at just 44 years old, one of the founders/co-owner of the station and, prior to the onset of her illness, the regular host of the College Rock Show. Donna was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of dementia at the age of 37 and has battled the disease for the last 8 years. Having started up the Alice’s Records Group when she was 18 she created one of the best recognised retail/mail order outlets in the UK for rock and metal which she continued to run up to her illness.

Rock has lost a champion!

RIP Donna.

Acclaimed and respected guitarist BRUCE GAITSCH has suffered a stroke and is currently recouperating.

He posted the following update: "If you are wondering where I have been it is a hospital! I had a stroke and have been in rehab. I have no use of my right side and every little thing is a chore. You never know what you have till it's gone."

Bruce's work can be heard on so many classic albums such as King Of Hearts, Richard Marx, Jim Peterik, Marc Jordan, Kelly Keagy, Peter Cetera and 100s more.

His KING OF HEARTS bandmate Tommy Funderburk posted this perfect response earlier today:

"Dear Friends - By now many of you have read Bruce's post. I'm writing from 30,000 feet on the way to LA to finish vocals on our record. I've not run this letter by Bruce - he doesn't want anyone making a fuss about him - but I want him to know how much I love him... and his music and his love for life and his family. Its been my great pleasure to write and and perform with him for these, uh many years. A truly great man.
Life hits hard sometimes and we're all so fragile. Ironically, we just finished a song titled "Don't Wait" ...to tell someone you love them now...
Praying for a full recovery and we're keeping the KOH guitar seat open! And, having emailed him a few times I can assure you Bruce hasn't lost his sense of humor.
I'm now getting calls and mail about the future of King Of Hearts. We're so fortunate that Bruce was able to finish almost all of his parts on the record! You'll love his playing and the songs are great. CJ and I will finish and yes we intend to tour. So stay tuned, we're not done yet. Bruce wants it that way. Now, go tell someone you love them."

Get well soon Bruce!

15 years after the arrival of their live recording From The Cradle To The Stage, German metal legend Rage have returned to Hanover imprint, SPV/Steamhammer. The band featuring frontman Peavy Wagner, guitarist Marcos Rodriguez and drummer Vassilios “Lucky” Maniatopoulos is currently busy working on new material for their upcoming album Wings Of Rage (working title), scheduled for release on 10 January 2020. A lead single will be out in September 2019, the second single to be lifted from the album is due to be released just before Christmas. Wings Of Rage is the group’s 25th studio album and will be recorded at the Soundchaser Studio in Burscheid. Peavy promises an offering featuring “the essence of our musical development, the kind of songs that we have stood for since the mid-eighties.”

Rage are planning to embark on a festival tour across Europe even before delivering their new material to present, together with the Lingua Mortis Orchestra, the full XIII album live for the first time. The show had its baptism of fire at the 70,000 Tons Of Metal Cruise, and a special highlight will be Rage’s appearance at the W:O:A at the beginning of August 2019. Towards the end of the year, Rage are scheduled to play lots of important winter festivals, before their major Wings Of Rage tour kicks off in February 2020.

“We’re really happy to be back with SPV/Steamhammer,” says Peavy Wagner“Since our very successful and enjoyable collaboration in the early 2000s we’ve known that we’re in expert hands with Olly Hahn and his team. Olly and I share a long-standing friendship, he will continue to promote Rage with his usual commitment.”

SPV/Steamhammer label manager Olly Hahn is delighted with his new signing: “It’s fantastic to have a band such as Rage on our roster again, their outstanding role in the development of German metal is undisputed. To be in a position to release their 25th studio album fills me with great pride and ambition.”

From PAUL RAYMOND's FB page, just a few minutes ago...

"Hi to all the fans and people who knew Paul! This is Sandra, Paul's life partner speaking: With a desperate and broken heart, fully in tears and pains that feel like they will kill me I have to tell you that my most beautiful and beloved darling Paul Raymond has passed away today. The doctors we're trying to reanimate him and with success at first but then his system shot down again and there was nothing more they could do for him, he died of a heart attack.

He absolutely enjoyed the last couple of weeks touring with UFO in the UK & Ireland and he was looking forward to the rest of this year's tour.

This photo was taken last Wednesday when we checked out of our last hotel before coming back to Germany!

I will always love him and I hope he will rest in piece until I'll see him again on the other side!!!

I love you so much Paul
Sandra"

RIP Paul, thanks for the music and farewell to another rock legend.

Preview track: "Hide Our Love Away (Tell Me Why)" https://tribunalrecords.bandcamp.com/album/messano-deluxe-edition

OVERVIEW:
The decades-long career of respected guitarist Bobby Messano picked up steam in the mid- to late-'70s with acts such as Stanky Brown and Starz. Gravitating toward session work around 1980, MESSANO would contribute to albums from a range of different artistsóPeter Criss and Joe Lynn Turner among themóas well as touring alongside heavyweeights like Steve Winwood, Lou Gramm, and more. For a portion of that era, Bobby had also joined rockers Franke & The Knockouts, performing (and co-writing two tracks) on their 1984 album, Makin' the Point.

Toward the end of the '80s, MESSANO also stepped up to present his debut solo album, having assembled a backing band consisting of Erik Boyd (bass), Joey Zee (keyboards), and Mike Gage (drums). Recorded with Jim Barg at The Barge Sound Studio in Wayne, NJ, Bobby handled lead vocals, guitar, bass, and the bulk of the songwriting. That being said, two cuts nodded to his past: "Hide Our Love Away (Tell Me Why)" was first recorded by Franke & The Knockouts under the title "Carrie Why?," and "Sing It, Shout It" was a Starz cover from 1977.

Released by Strategicóa division of Relativity Recordsóin 1989,89, the 11-song album has become a bit of a cult classic over the years for fans of top-shelf, hook-fueled melodic hard rock. MESSANO wouldn't release another solo album until 1998óthe blues-based Dominion Roadsó‚Äîbut has remained an active and highly regarded force in the blues community since that time.

30 years later, Divebomb Records is excited to reissue this underrated AOR treasure. Newly remastered with a whopping five bonus tracks, the disc will be presented with a typically detailed booklet featuring a retrospective interview with Bobby Messano himself. For the fans, by the fans!

KNIGHTS REIGN

OVERVIEW:
Little-known Texas act KNIGHTS REIGN formed when ex-Lix members Tony Marsh (guitar) and Mike Reiner (drums) joined forces with vocalist Tim King, previously of Baltic Avenue. Tim then recruited T.J. Ostrander on keyboards, and the quartet located bassist Jason Rasberry through a local friend who owned an area music store. The quintet quickly developed a uniquely progressive sound centered predominantly around hard-hitting guitars and full-band vocal harmonies, drawing influences from all sorts of hard rock and metal, and even characteristics of blues or funk. A catalog of songs were crafted over the course of about one year during the early-'90s and recorded in a temporary studio set up in Reiner's home. The result was a self-recorded, self-produced, and self-released 12-song CD issued through Perisphere Records in 1994.

Shortly afterward, John Bedinghaus replaced Rasberry on bass and KNIGHTS REIGN soldiered on, writing and demoing songs intended for a second album through the latter part of the decade. While that material displayed a more mature and focused approachóat times even coming across like a harder-edged Journeyóbeing located in an area with little to no opportunities for higher-profile live performances, the group simply ran its course and drew to an end. Their lone self-titled CD has since become an extremely rare collector's item, having only been sold directly by the band, and never repressed...

...until now! Over two decades later, Divebomb Records is elated to present the complete discography of KNIGHTS REIGN: over 75 minutes of music, including five previously unreleased bonus tracks culled from demos for the incomplete second album. Remastered by Jamie King at The Basement Recording, the disc will come complete with lyrics, photographs, and a retrospective interview on the history of the band. For the fans, by the fans!

The first release from new Melodic Rock label ScandiRock Records is a re-issue of the 2005 debut Gypsy Rose album with one bon us track on April 26.

The band GYPSY ROSE was founded back in 1981 in Sweden by Håkan Gustafsson and Martin Kronlund, but their self-titled debut album was just  released in 2005 - almost 25 years later! Now life has not been all too kind for the band during the 80's. Labels that went belly-up after signing, warm attention from foreign producers (Taavi Mote - Geffen Records) that in the end was nothing more than a cold shower.

Finally GYPSY ROSE broke up in 1993, but thanks to Andrew McNeice   at www.melodicrock.com the group got together again in 2004 and started the recordings in Martins Kronlund’s studio.
Now, the album is re-released on CD and digital under the new name “Reloaded” with a new cover, re-mastered by Martin Kronlund and with the bonus track “Solitude” added.

Original Survivor bass player STEPHAN ELLIS has passed away.

Stephan was a crucial part of the great legacy of Survivor’s heyday. I know Jim and Frankie will both be feeling this hard and my personal condolences go out to them and Stephan’s family, friends and fans.

Survivor's Frankie Sullivan has just posted this message on the band's FB page:
We are devastated to hear that Stephan Ellis has passed away. Steph was the guy who was only interested in the music. He absolutely had a special charm with the fans and within the band. I loved much when it came to Steph.

What I remember most and clearly recall is the day when we cut “Keep It Right Here.” The Bass part and lines in the intro just folded into the mix and it was the bass part that inspired me to reach higher on my guitar. We cut our tracks together, live in the studio. Steph’s runs on the neck of that blue bass are as memorable as the song itself.

The guitar player/bass player vibe has been around for a long time and Stephan and I had our thing as well. We fed off each other a lot and I think it was simply his calm ways that not only presented him to me in the beginning, it was also Steph’s calm ways that often helped most. He was always good for some adventurous storytelling that the censorship of today has removed, never to be told by this band reporter. But I learned a few things, we all did…!!!!

I will miss Stephan, we all will. We can talk for years about how much he’d cause us to laugh and most importantly to a rock n’ roll band at that time, the infamous “ice” lesson he passed on to us all one day that stuck for a long while.

This was Stephan Ellis to me –

Underrated yet never dated. Well dressed and on a consistent basis. Gargoyles and all and he was cool enough to pull off. Stephan was well-coifed, always ready and Stephan Ellis lived his own life in his own way and on his own terms.

We Love you Steph!
