The following seven new Rock Candy titles are all available now from www.rockcandyrecords.com for a discounted price.

LEGS DIAMOND ‘S/T’ CANDY340

IF EVER THERE was a band that should have taken their music to the very top of the rock charts and beyond, then Legs Diamond were surely it. Feted by the cognoscenti, yet forever living in a shadow, the band’s influence and reputation has actually increased as the years have flown by. To many, their music has come to represent some of the greatest hard rock to have emerged from North America, with some calling them, quite accurately, the American Deep Purple.
The band’s debut album came to represent the very soul of a movement that was in full swing, led by the likes of Ted Nugent, Aerosmith, BOC and Montrose. There was nothing shallow about the band’s music or message; it was a full on assault of cock sure riffs, sublime vocals, intricate arrangements and a confidence that you only witness in the most talented acts.

LEGS DIAMOND ‘A DIAMOND IS A HARD ROCK’ CANDY341

HAVING RECORDED ONE of the best debut hard rock albums of the 1970s, Legs Diamond had set a seriously high standard that attracted the attention of connoisseurs worldwide. Against all odds, the band’s second album was not only a more impressive statement but also one that solidified the group’s reputation for years to come. Produced this time around by Eddie Leonetti (who worked with Angel, Moxy and Rex) the record is an astonishing continuation of their debut, helping the band to fully realise their enormous potential.
Released in the fall of 1977, it showcases the band at the very peak of their powers, unleashing a veritable barrage of rock solid material. Cleverly bridging the gap between balls to the wall hard rock and more constrained content, the album builds on their reputation as a band that could easily combine clever instrumental prowess with hard as nails riffs.

LEGS DIAMOND ‘FIRE POWER’ CANDY342

HAVING RECORDED TWO sensational albums for well heeled Mercury Records, the band were cast adrift when sales figures revealed unexpected and disappointing results. But with deep resolve they opted to carry on and found a new home with independent label, Cream Records. Unfortunately, as things turned out it was not the saving grace they had hoped for but it did provide them with the opportunity to record yet another album that significantly added to their reputation.

Issued in 1979, the record actually received well intentioned promotion and contained arguably one of their greatest tracks, namely ‘Underworld King’, a song that further bolstered their reputation as the American comparison to Deep Purple. Other highlights include ‘Come With Me’ and ‘Man At The Top’. It is an album of light and shade, clearly the result of behind the scenes influences, but at least the band’s heart and soul was still beating loud and clear, letting us know that they were still very much contenders to the throne.

MORNINGSTAR ‘S/T’ CANDY300

YOU MAY NEVER have heard of Morningstar, but that’s no reason not to make a space in your life for them now. Formed in Kansas City during the early 70s, their debut album is a fitting period piece, eliciting comparisons to similar sounding mid-west champions such as Roadmaster, Trillion and Head East; all groups with a penchant for melody displaying respect for classy arrangements and impressive musicianship.
Issued in 1978, their hard driving edge and progressive flourishes made several tracks standout, such as the pounding ‘Turn Out All The Lights’, the epic six minute ‘Through The Night’ - a veritable stylistic cornucopia of heavy but melodious rock - and ‘Sad Lady’, a classy pomp rock prima donna blessed with layers of soaring vocals and impressive keyboards.

MORNINGSTAR ‘VENUS’ CANDY301

‘VENUS’ WAS MORNINGSTAR’S second album, issued in 1979, on the Columbia label and like their debut, it failed spectacularly to bother the charts despite the quality of their music. However, to a select few, the band’s penchant for playing in a style later labelled as pomp rock (think Trillion, Roadmaster, Starcastle) gave them an undeniable edge, creating a small but dedicated following; one that would grow in later years with the Internet helping to tap into a scene ripe for reappraisal.

The album builds on their debut yet demonstrates a slightly more mainstream approach, best exemplified by the epic, Foreigneresque vibe of ‘Never Meant To Be’, the poptastic s groove of ‘Rosie’ and the classical pomp rock of ‘Let Me Dream’, with its majestic finale.

NUTZ ‘S/T’ CANDY367

WITH THE RISE of British rock as a major, worldwide, force during the early seventies a slew of up and coming home grown acts also appeared including Nutz. Formed in their home city of Liverpool this four man unit fitted right into the scene and not surprisingly secured an influential deal with the A&M label. Issued in 1974, and housed in a highly controversial sleeve, the album attracted strong reviews and saw the band instigate an intense gigging schedule (including opening for Queen on their 1974 tour). The album is an impressive mixture of powerful hard rock, and more ambitious compositions such as the hard hitting ‘Ain’t No Thanks To You’ (featuring superb slide guitar), ‘As Far As The Eye Can See’ and ‘Poor Man’.

NUTZ ‘TOO’ CANDY368

WITH A POSITIVE reputation established via their debut album, Liverpool based quintet Nutz set about recording their follow-up album in London’s Trident studios utilising, once again, producer John Anthony who had so successfully guided their debut. It wise a wise move as the resultant record showed distinct maturity and a great gift for constructive arrangements. It also continued to showcase the inventive guitar playing of Mick Devonport and the impressive vocals of Dave Lloyd. Issued in 1975 ‘Nutz Too’ contained a brace of intelligent and well constructed tracks veering from on-point mid-seventies hard rock such as ‘Take It From Me’, ‘Cool Me Down’ and the jewel in the crown ‘Sinner’, to more introspective fair like ‘Dear Diary and ‘The Love You Lost’.

PAUL DEAN Debuts New Solo Single 'Be With You'

Artist:
Categories:
News Feed

LOVERBOY guitarist PAUL DEAN starts Spring with his own renewal, digitally releasing a new song and accompanying video, 'Be With You' his first solo material in more than 20 years, since 1994’s album, Machine. The single will be available digitally on March 21st for streaming at all major sites, including Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal and Deezer, as well as for download on iTunes and Amazon Music and viewing on YouTube.

“Be With You” is based on a song Paul reveals “has been kicking around since Loverboy’s “Just Getting Started” album, but its current iteration offers a “mariachi, south-of-the-border Mexicali blues” flavor, marked by Dean’s acoustic and twangy electric guitars – in large part thanks to his trusty Floyd Rose whammy bar. The result sounds like it could have come straight from a Traveling Wilburys’ album, or a Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez movie. “It was originally intended as part of a soundtrack to a screenplay I’m working on”, says Dean. It is the first of 11 new songs, many recorded at co-producer Mike Pisterzi’s Dallas-based Maximedia Studios with Loverboy mates Matt Frenette and Ken “Spider” Sinnaeve. Loverboy singer Mike Reno even contributes lyrics to one track.

“It’s a huge change musically for me from what I do with the band,” said Dean. “It reminds me of Loverboy’s debut album in its stylistic diversity, because each of the songs is so different. I just wrote what I was feeling and what I loved to hear and perform. It’s totally meant to be danced to, especially ‘Be With You’.”

Indeed, the video is a “celebration” of Loverboy and its fans, featuring Dean today (“My wife talked me into being real, owning up to who I am,” he says) playing over footage shot more than three decades ago with the band. The object of desire is an alluring woman, (who is featured in the cover band at the beginning of the band’s “Lovin’ Every Minute” video), whooping it up on stage in a display of self-empowerment, the unaware object of the narrator’s obsession.

“I like that kind of juxtaposition of really positive music with ambiguous lyrics,” says Dean, referencing such Loverboy classics as “Turn Me Loose” and “The Kid Is Hot Tonight,” the latter warning about the perils of fame. “Taken at face value, you could say “Be With You” is simply a love song.”

The new video comes on the heels of last year’s digital release of Dean’s 1989 solo debut, Hard Core, with it’s accompanying re-released videos of “Sword In Stone”, and “Draw The Line.” Dean says, “This is not a break from Loverboy. It’s meant to augment what we do as a band - to continue the dialogue, the conversation, with our fans, and keep them invested in us, individually and collectively.”

LOVERBOY's four-decade-long career began in Calgary when vocalist Mike Reno was introduced to guitar legend Paul Dean, the two eventually joined by keyboardist Doug Johnson, drummer Matt Frenette and bassist Ken "Spider" Sinnaeve, who replaced the late Scott Smith in 2000. The band’s releases include the four-million-selling Get Lucky, and three double-platinum releases in their self-titled 1980 debut, 1983's Keep It Up and 1985's Lovin' Every Minute of It, including the hits "Working for the Weekend," "Lovin' Every Minute of It.

GIG Brings Three AOR Greats To The Studio

Artist:
Monday, April 30, 2018
Categories:
News Feed

GIG is the brainchild of a trio of legendary music-makers Randy Goodrum, Dave Innis and Bruce Gaitsch (hence GIG from their last names).

Singer-songwriter Randy Goodrum has written or co-written countless hits, including “You Needed Me” for Anne Murray, “Who's Holding Donna Now” for El DeBarge, “Oh Sherrie” for Steve Perry and “I'll Be Over You” for Toto, to name just a few. Goodrum is also half of the renowned quality pop duo JaR, along with ace producer, songwriter and guitar player Jay Graydon.
Bruce Gaitsch is an extraordinary songwriter, guitarist and top session player who has performed and/or recorded with dozen of major acts, including Chicago, Celine Dion, Elton John, Amy Grant and Peter Cetera. Gaitsch has also co-penned big hits like “La Isla Bonita” for Madonna and “Don't Mean Nothing” with his old friend Richard Marx.

Dave Innis is one of the founding members of the successful country-pop group Restless Heart. He is also a successful songwriter and keyboard player, having penned and co-written hits for a number of world-class artists, including The Pointer Sisters, Peter Cetera, Lee Greenwood and Kenny Rogers, among others.

GIG is a special project that started out in 2013 and continued to 2015. An all-star cast rounded out the album production, including fabulous drummers like Keith Carlock of Toto and Steely Dan fame, Dan Needham who backed up stars like Michael McDonald and Marc Broussard, Billy Ward who was a drummer for Bill Champlin and Marc Jordan, plus Suzanne Vega's player, Doug Yowell. The bass parts were handled by George Hawkins Jr., Kenny Loggins' legendary bassist, and Nashville's top session guy Tim Denbo. The very talented singer Janey Clewer, who’s also Gaitsch's wife, sang the gorgeous harmonies with Goodrum, who delivers some killer lead vocals throughout the project.

A special treat on Brave New World is the song "All I'll Ever Needed", which closes the album. The song was written by composer and keyboardist Michael Haddad, who demoed it with lead vocals by the late Warren Wiebe. Warren's precious vocals were kindly granted by Haddad to Contante & Sonante that asked GIG to record a whole new backing track for the song. The result is a new recording of "All I'll Ever Need" that perfectly fits the soft-rock atmosphere of Brave New World.

GIG's Brave New World is destined to be a must-listen for the lovers of West Coast pop and soft-rock. The material included is a true master class, both in arrangement and execution.
Released in a limited edition of only 1000 copies.

It is with great pleasure that MelodicRock Records announces the signing of Swedish hard rockers StoneLake for the release of their new studio release ‘Thunder And Rain’.

It is the third release in a partnership with StoneLake’s founder Jan Akesson, following previous albums from S.A.Y and Jan Akesson’s Shadow Rain.

This will be StoneLake’s seventh album and their first in 5 years. The band might have a new updated logo, but ‘Thunder And Rain’ is an album of classic StoneLake you know and love – high octane guitar riffs, pounding rhythm section and layers of vocals and keyboards brining the melody.

Bound to appeal to fans of Swedish hard rock, TNT and Yngwie Malmsteen and the like…

Jan Akesson comments: “We are happy to announce the release of our 7th album "Thunder and Rain" through Melodic Rock Records! After a break of nearly 5 years it's great to have finished the work of an album that we are very proud of!”

Vocalist Peter Gundstrom: “With this work we are back to the roots where we once started off with melodic songs, harmonies and riffs like the old school! Everything comes from heart and soul and I am very humble still to be able and deliver what I love!”

Jan concludes: “To release this album is great because this means that we are back for the future again! We feel that the songwriting and production gets better all the time and this have no ending as long as we love what we are doing! We would also like to thank Andrew for believing in us and that our cooperation goes on and on!”

STONELAKE IS:
Peter Grundstrom – Vocals, Backing Vocals
Jan Akesson - Guitars – Keyboards, Backing Vocals
Lasse Johansson - Bass
Jens Westberg - Drums

Produced By: Jan Akesson
Recorded, Mixed And Mastered By: Jan Akesson AT UMP Unlimited Music Production

StoneLake Bio:
In August 1984 guitarist Jan Akesson and singer Peter Grundstrom got to know each other after performing at the same show in different bands; Jan was lead guitar in Ravage and Peter was fronting Whitelight. Their meeting led to the conclusion of Jan’s work with Ravage and he became a new member in Whitelight in the fall of the same year.

Whitelight’s focus was melodic hard rock, initially influenced by Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Bad Company and then by a ‘new wave’ of English, American and Canadian bands such as Whitesnake, Van Halen, Journey, Toto, Riot, Wrabit and Dokken. Whitelight played many gigs and produced many demos in search of that elusive record deal.

After 3 years with Whitelight, in 1987, Jan decided to leave the band and went his own way to spread his wings with tougher, more guitar-oriented hard rock. Peter stayed in Whitelight, who changed their name to Kee Avenue.
Jan went on to form new bands Why Not, Perfect Stranger and Dr Blue, playing many very successful gigs and making several acclaimed recordings.

Kee Avenue split up in 1991 after the bass player and the keyboard player left the band. After this final breakup Peter went on to play and sing with several different, mostly cover bands, though he kept on writing songs, always looking for the right project to showcase his talent.

In 1994 Jan decided to step back from live performance to concentrate on writing and producing songs in his new studio on the emerging digital recording platforms that would soon come to dominate the music industry.

Finally, 15 years after the two first played together, Jan decided to give Peter a call, thinking that it was time for a ‘reunion’. A good meal and a few beers was the spark that lit a new beginning.

The result was StoneLake.

'Thunder And Rain' will be released April 25 on MelodicRock Records. Pre-order available shortly.

GRAND DESIGN Unleash 'Viva La Paradise' April 20

Grand Design was formed in 2006 by vocalist/producer Pelle Saether, and the band’s first 1st album “Time Elevation” was release by AOR Heaven in October 2009.  The album featured a guest spot from guitarists Janne Stark. The release gained massive success and was awarded ‘best album’ and ‘best song’ by BeRockRadio and received numerous top 10 positions for “best album 2009”. Several concerts, including the prestigious FireFest in Nottingham, UK proved that Grand Design also deliver live.
Two years later, it was time for Grand Design’s second album – “Idolizer”.

Pelle says: “We knew we had found a formula to make an 80’s rock record work in the 21st century – so why change it?” With new anthems like “Get On With Action”, “OughtoGraph” and “Your Love’s A Runaway”, “Idolizer” followed up the fans expectations. Grand Design again proved that the songs and sound of 80’s rock belong in your players and on the big stages.

In 2012 the line-up saw singer Pelle Saether and guitarist Dennis Vestman, now flanked by guitarist Janne Stark (Constancia, Overdrive etc) and bassist Mats Vassfjord. The band also did numerous shows in Sweden as well as outside the country.

Early 2013 the band finished two new songs, featuring guest singer Susie Päivärinta (of Lili & Susie), of which the song “Baby It’s You” (Promises cover) was released as a single and video in June 2013. The band also welcomed new drummer Magnus Ulfstedt (Eclipse, Jimi Jamison, Talisman, Lion’s Share etc), who made his debut on the video. The band performed at festivals such as Skogsröjet and Rock Out Wild, together with bands like Twisted Sister, Lita Ford, Pain and Lizzy Borden.

2014 saw Grand Design play lots more shows/tours/festivals, such as MelodicRockFest 4 in Chicago, U.S.A, Grand Design Italy Tour, etc. But, most importantly, on September 26 Grand Design released their third and highest rated album, “Thrill Of The Night” (AOR Heaven Records/Europe, Rubicon Music/Japan). The same day the video for “Rawk ‘N Roll Heart Attack” was released and hit over 6000 views in just a few days! “Thrill Of The Night” also marks the first Japan release for the band. The album was awarded best album of 2014 by RockEyez. Grand Design is the only band winning two years (2011 and 2014).

By mid-2015 the video for ““Rawk ‘N Roll Heart Attack” had well over 200 000 views on YouTube! The band played in Spain together with Kee Marcello and Dynasty, plus some more shows in Sweden. A new video for “Get Up And Love Someone” saw the light of day in September 2015, like the previous one, also directed by Thomas Tjäder (Acromancy Media).

In 2017 the band was reinforced by new bass player Stefan Westerlund (Rocket Love) and drummer Joakim Jonsson (Axenstar, Psychopunch) and the new album “Viva La Paradise” was recorded. Continuing on the path of “Thrill Of The Night”, the band feels this marks the strongest album to date. The same old style and sound, but elevated and with a few new surprises.

Grand Design is already booked for the 2018 MelodicRock Festival in USA and Sweden, a tour of Spain is planned for the fall and more shows are being added!

PRAYING MANTIS Back With New 'Gravity' May 11

Praying Mantis are pleased to announce their 11th studio album, ‘Gravity’. After the positive reception afforded to the band's last studio release, ’Legacy' (2015), the new record sees the band return with another inspired, take-no-prisoners set. Out May 11.

The album also sees Mantis retain the same line-up, with John Cuijpers (vocals) and Hans in’t Zandt (drums) again contributing to the songwriting process. Alongside founder members Tino Troy, Chris Troy and Andy Burgess, they have not only helped in the writing of the songs, but also in providing a new dimension in terms of sound engineering and overall production.

One of the most influential and well known sleeve artists in the rock field, Rodney Matthews (Magnum, Diamond Head, Allen/Lande), has been commissioned to design the artwork for ‘Gravity’ in the same style and stunning quality that so many fans loved on Mantis albums such as ‘Time Tells No Lies’, ‘Predator In Disguise’ and the aforementioned ‘Legacy’.

Praying Mantis are a well established band of melodic hard rockers. They were formed by brothers Tino and Chris Troy in 1973 and, together with bands like Iron Maiden, Def Leppard and Saxon, they spearheaded the NWOBHM (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal) movement of the late ’70’s. While they did not attain the same dizzying heights of success as some of their contemporaries, they nonetheless became one of the most influential bands in the genre. The band has remained active over the years and still record and play live regularly.

Praying Mantis will perform at the annual Frontiers Rock Festival in Milan, Italy on 28th April.
